The purpose of this study is to investigate the mechanical and carbon-capture properties of foam concrete containing stainless steel argon oxygen decarbonization(AOD) slag. AOD slag was used as a binder, and foam concrete having a foaming ratio of 69 ± 0.5 % and a slurry density of 573.2 to 578.6 kg / ㎥ was produced. In order to examine the effect of carbonation, blended specimen was cured by two types : normal curing and CO2 curing. As a result of the experiment, the specimens incorporating AOD slag showed higher compressive strength than Plain after CO2 curing. According to the analysis of the image of foam concrete, it was confirmed that the ST30 has a lower total pore volume and average pore size than plain, resulting in high compressive strength. The SEM analysis confirmed the formation of calcite by carbonation of AOD slag. Through the thermogravimetric analysis, the increase of CO2 uptake was confirmed by the incorporation of AOD slag. Foam concrete has a higher porosity than normal concrete, so it is expected that carbon-capture performance can be improved by using a AOD slag.
To identify causes for drastic decrease in yield of tomato with repeated culturing number of the bag culture substrate of greenhouse tomatoes we investigated the physical and chemical properties of a coir used as the bag culture substrate to grow tomato at the Booyeo tomato experimental institute located in Booyeo, Chungnam Province for three years from 2012 to 2014. The results showed that total porosity ranged from 65.4 to 73.1% for the bulk densities of coir ranging from 0.12 to $0.14g\;cm^{-3}$. The volumetric water contents measured at 0.01 bar as air entry point were 25% (before), 33% ($1^{st}yr$), 45% ($2^{nd}yr$), and 37% ($3^{rd}yr$). Organic matter contents ranged from 82.0 to 96.2% (highest in $1^{st}yr$). pH and EC ranged from 4.47 to 6.47 (highest in $2^{nd}yr$), and from 22.2 to $53.5dS\;m^{-1}$ (highest in $1^{st}yr$) and cation exchange capacity ranged from 71.0 to $191.7cmol\;kg^{-1}$ (highest in $3^{rd}yr$). The surface structure observed with electrical microscope showed that the number of large pores decreased with increasing cultivating time while the proportion of smaller pores increased, indicating that the coir was consistently decomposed. Therefore, we could conclude that these changes of all physical and chemical properties of the coir may influence the holding capacities of water and nutrients, resulting in deterioration of quality of culture substrate of greenhouse tomatoes.

The objective of this research was to determine the influence of the physical and chemical properties of root substrates used during the production of 'Maehyang' strawberry propaguleson the growth of the mother plants and the rate of daughter plant formation. Plants were cultured in plastic bags containing six different formulations of root substrates composed of: a) 50% coir dust and 50% perlite (5:5 by volume, A), b) 60% coir dust and 40% perlite (6:4, B), c) 70% coir dust and 30% perlite (7:3, C), d) 70% coir dust and 30% coconut chip (7:3 D), e) 60% coir dust and 40% coconut chip (60:40, E), or f) 50% sphagnum peat and 50% vermiculite (50:50, F). All media formulations contained a moderate level of base fertilizers. Physical and chemical properties of each formulation were determined before plant establishment and after 120 days of stock plant culture and runner production. Total porosity (TP) and container capacity (CC) of all substrate formulations were higher than 85% and 55%, respectively, allowing a suitable range of air and water holding characteristics. Formulation F provided the highest TP and CC values among the all substrate modifications evaluated. Substrate formulations A, B, C and F had higher electrical conductivity (EC) and $NO_3{^-}$-N concentrations than formulations D and E, when determined before and after plant culture. Formulations A, B, C, and F, having higher EC readings, also performed better as root substrates thanthe formulations D and E in increasing fresh and dry weights of the runners as well as the production of daughter plants per plant. The 'Maehyang' strawberry plants grown in the formulation F had the highest tissue N content, followed by those grown in substrate B, A, C, or D for 120 days after transplanting. Formulation F also facilitated accumulation of higher tissue phosphorus (P) and copper (Cu) contents compared to other treatments. Results of this experiment suggest that the chemical properties, rather than physical properties, of root substrates had a major influence on the growth of mother plants and the occurrence of healthy daughter plants during the bag-culture phase of propagation.
Growers in plug seedling production think that root media in which rockwool is a component has given rise to several environmental problems. Therefore, the demand for new materials as a substitute for rockwool has been increased. This study examined the possibility of cultivation of tomato plug seedlings using a newly developed growing medium with phenolic foam. Plug seeds of tomato cultivar 'Madison' were sown in four pellet-type growing media: Grodan rockwool (GRW), UR rockwool (URW), phenolic foam LC (LC) or phenolic foam LC-lite (LC-lite). Then, the seedlings were transplanted to the four cube-type growing media 19 days after sowing. Seeds were germinated in a growth chamber ($25{\pm}2^{\circ}C$, 80% relative humidity, and dark) for 4 days and then the seedlings were grown with a nutrient solution supplied by an overhead irrigation system in a greenhouse. Plant height, number of leaves, leaf area, and fresh or dry weight of tomato seedlings were the greatest for the seedlings transplanted to URW cube media after being grown on LC-lite pellets. Root grade was the greatest for the seedlings transplanted on LC or LC-lite cube media after being grown on LC pellets. Chemical properties of all media tested for tomato growth were maintained within a stable range, while physical properties of URW showed high values in container capacity, air space, and total porosity. These results demonstrated that the phenolic foam media were effective for seedling growth and can substitute for rockwool as a root medium.
The objective of this research was to improve moisture retention capacity of pine bark. To achieve this, barks were ground with Wiley mill of hammer mill and were blended with recycled rockwool. Then, changes of soil physical properties were determined. The percentage of particles larger than 5.6 mm was 86.5% in raw materials. The percentage of particles larger than 1 mm decreased and those of particles smaller than 1 mm increased by grinding with Wiley mill or hammer mill. Grinding with Wiley mill showed better effect than those of hammer mill in decreasing particle size distribution. Grinding resulted in decreased total porosity (TP) and air space (AS) and increased container capacity (CC) and residual water content (RW), indication improved moisture retention capacity. The material ground with Wiley mill, than blended with 50% recycled rockwool had 81.1%, 67.7%, 13.5% and 235 ml in TP, CC, AS and RW, respectively. These results indicated that moisture retention capacity was improved by blending with recycled rockwood, but aeration of root media was much better than those of peat+vermiculite(1:1, v/v), which is commonly used in commercial production.
This study looked into 110 sites of orchard fields to investigate the relationships between the physical and chemical properties of soils, including heavy metal contents, and the topographic characteristics of the fields in Jeonbuk province. The topographic distribution of orchard fields in Jeonbuk province was local valley and fans, hilly and mountains, mountain foot slopes, alluvial plains, diluvium, and fluvio-marine deposits. Forty-six percent (46%) of total orchard fields were located in the hilly and mountains. Soil texture of the local valley and fans was mostly sandy clay loam, and the soil texture of other topographical sites were varied. Bulk density, porosity, and soil hardness were not different among the various topographic sites. The content of plant available water was the highest (19.5%) in the sites of diluvium. Soil pH, electrical conductivity (EC), and exchangeable $Mg^{2+}$ content were the highest in the sites of fluvio-marine deposits, whereas the contents of soil organic matter (SOM), available phosphorus, and exchangeable $Ca^{2+}$, $K^+$, and $Na^+$ were not significantly different among the topographic sites. Also, soil pH and SOM content were generally in optimal ranges for the fruit plants in the orchard fields, but other values were mostly higher than those in optimum. In addition, the contents of heavy metals were much lower than the levels of Soil Contamination Warning Standard.
In many previous studies, monte carlo simulation is used to produce lead-free shielding sheet, and the possibility of radiation shielding capability and weight reduction is presented. But it is difficult to simulation for binder and micro-pores because of In fact it does not provide sufficient information necessary for the commercialization process. Therefore, in this paper, the results of radiation shielding capability corresponding to filling factor was presented by using the screen printing method to provide information on gel-paste required for the commercialization process. In this study, the geometric setup for evaluate of radiation shielding ability was designed to comply with IEC 61331-1:2014 and KS A 4025. In addition, radiation irradiation conditions were 100 kVp filtered with 2.0 mmAl total filtration was applied according to KS A 4021 standard. In this study, Pb $1270{\mu}m$, $BaSO_4$$3035{\mu}m$, $Bi_2O_3$$1849{\mu}m$ and $WO_3$$2631{\mu}m$ were analyzed based on ten value layer. Additionally, the filling factor was analyzed as $BaSO_4$ 38.6%, $Bi_2O_3$ 27.1%, $WO_3$ 30.15%. However, in the case of applying low-temperature high-pressure molding in the future, it is expected that the radiation shielding capability can be sufficiently improved by reducing the porosity while increasing the filling factor.
This study sought to identify the optimum substrate composition for the stable bottle cultivation of Sparassis latifolia. The main substrate was fermented larch sawdust. Six nutrient sources were mixed at a maximum volume ratio of 20%. The fresh weight of fruit body was the highest at 128.5 g for GMSL69033 and 126.6 g for 'Neoul' in the treatments of beet pulp and corn flour in a volume ratio of 15:5. In addition, the total cultivation period was 94 days, which was shorter than that required for other treatments. The selected substrate characteristics were pH 4.7, C:N (carbon to nitrogen) ratio of 106:4, moisture content of 70%, and air filling porosity of 38%. We plan to develop new income items through research on mycelial incubation and fruit body growth conditions.
To develop environmental-friendly insulating composite materials, natural cellulose and porous ceramic balls were used as core materials and activated Hwangtoh was used as a binder. Various specimens were prepared with different water/binder ratios and core material/binder ratios. The physical properties of these specimens were then investigated through compressive strengths, flexural strengths, absorption test, hot water resistance test, pore analysis, thermal conductivity, and observation of micro-structures using scanning electron microscope. Results showed that the maximum compressive strength varied appreciably with the water/binder ratios and core material/binder ratios, but the flexural strength increased with the core material/binder ratios regardless of water/binder ratios. The compressive strength and the flexural strength measured after the hot water resistance test decreased remarkably compared to those measured before test. The pore analysis measured after the hot water resistance test showed that total pore volume, porosity and average pore diameter decreased, while bulk density increased by the acceleration of hydration reaction of binder in the hot water. The thermal conductivity decreased gradually with an increase of core material/binder ratios. It can be evaluated that the composite insulation materials having good insulating properties and mechanical strengths can be used in the field.

As the water shortage has become a noticeable issue due to climate change, forests play an importance role as the provider of water supply service. There is, however, little information about the relationships between the factors used in the estimation of water supply service and coarse pore fraction of forest soil which determines the potential of water supply. To find out whether there would be an amelioration in the scoring system of water supply service estimation, we examined all factors except meteorological one and additionally, analyzed 4 extra factors that might be related with coarse pore fraction of soil. A total of 2,214 soil samples were collected throughout South Korea to measure coarse pore fractions from 2015 to 2020. First, the result of average coarse pore fraction of all samples showed 32.98±6.59% which was consistent with previous studies. And the results of non-parametric analysis of variance indicated that only two of eleven factors that was used in the scoring system matched the results of coarse pore fraction of forest soils. Tree canopy coverage showed no difference among categories, and slope also showed no significance at level of 0.05 in the linear regression analysis. Additionally, the applicability of 4 extra factors were confirmed, as the result of coarse pore fractions of soil samples were different for various categories of each factor. Therefore, the scoring system of water supply service of forest should be revised to improve accuracy.
