The oil-based magnetic fluids were sysnthesized using ultra-fine $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ powder dispersed in hydrocarbon oil. To synthesize ultra-fine $Fe_{3}O_{4}$, we carried out the experiments varying the pH of reacting medium and the initial concentration of $Fe^{2+}$. We also investigated the amount of oleic acid to obtain a stable dispersion and the proper base oil of MF for loudspeaker application. The limits of adsorbed amount of oleic acid on the $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ surface were approximately 35~40 percents of the total magnetite weight. As the $Fe_{3}O_{4}$ content increased from 0.1g/cc to 0.6g/cc, the viscosity of oil-based magnetic fluid increased from 1,063cP to 1,828cP, and its saturation magnetization at 10kOe increased from 66G to 242G. When we tested the MF sample to a commercial speaker, improvements were noted.
Petroleum-contaminated soil is considered among the most important potential anthropogenic atmospheric methane sources. Additionally, various rhizoremediation factors can affect methane emissions by altering soil ecosystem carbon cycles. Nonetheless, greenhouse gas emissions from soil have not been given due importance as a potentially relevant parameter in rhizoremediation techniques. Therefore, in this study we sought to investigate the effects of different plant and soil amendments on both remediation efficiencies and methane emission characteristics in diesel-contaminated soil. An indoor pot experiment consisting of three plant treatments (control, maize, tall fescue) and two soil amendments (chemical nutrient, compost) was performed for 95 days. Total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) removal efficiency, dehydrogenase activity, and alkB (i.e., an alkane compound-degrading enzyme) gene abundance were the highest in the tall fescue and maize soil system amended with compost. Compost addition enhanced both the overall remediation efficiencies, as well as pmoA (i.e., a methane-oxidizing enzyme) gene abundance in soils. Moreover, the potential methane emission of diesel-contaminated soil was relatively low when maize was introduced to the soil system. After microbial community analysis, various TPH-degrading microorganisms (Nocardioides, Marinobacter, Immitisolibacter, Acinetobacter, Kocuria, Mycobacterium, Pseudomonas, Alcanivorax) and methane-oxidizing microorganisms (Methylocapsa, Methylosarcina) were observed in the rhizosphere soil. The effects of major rhizoremediation factors on soil remediation efficiency and greenhouse gas emissions discussed herein are expected to contribute to the development of sustainable biological remediation technologies in response to global climate change.
A numerous oil slicks of natural origin were revealed in the southwest (SW) part of Caspian Sea by the synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired by Envisat satellite in 2003-2004. On the basis of computer processing, visual analysis of SAR images and comparisons with bathymetry, geophysical and seismic data in geographic information system (GIS), a link between these slicks and unloading of liquid hydrocarbons in the SW Caspian is established. Oil slicks are basically concentrated above domes of local geological formations of the sedimentary cover. In total more than 90 seeps and mud volcanoes having a repeating regime and representing an active type were identified; they are distributed across the SW Azerbaijan and West Iranian sectors. Periodical occurrence of slicks can reflect alternation of mud volcanism pulses forced by intensive seismicity with the quiet periods. Seepage rate of oil in the SW part of the Caspian Sea according to SAR images is estimated to be up to 16,000 metric tons per year. The importance of unloading of oils on hydrochemistry and ecological conditions of the Caspian Sea is demonstrated. Conclusion is done that the Envisat SAR to be an excellent tool for studying oil seeps through observation oil slicks floating on the sea surface.

This study investigated the feasibility of a statistical approach for the prediction of BaP and total PAHs as pyrogenic sources. As results of regression, excellent linear and multiple correlations ($r^2$ > 0.94) were observed between BaP (or ${\Sigma}PAH$) and Pyr concentrations. When a developed prediction equation was applied to other investigations as validation and application studies, outstanding prediction results were obtained. The predictive model showed very good correlation between the measured and calculated ${\Sigma}PAH$. From this equation, Pyr was an apparently important hydrocarbon for the prediction of PAH. This model might provide a potentially useful tool for the calculation of average BaP and ${\Sigma}PAH$ in a certain region without additional tests.
Two extraction methods for total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) from contaminated soil were evaluated. The soil used for this study was sandy loam. Diesel oil was selected as representative petroleum hydrocarbons and was spiked at 100, 10,000, 50,000mg TPH/kg dry soil. Percentage recovery of TPH by shaking method was higher compared to Soxhlet extraction. At extraction time of 2 hours and sample to solvent ratio of 1 : 5, the highest percentage recovery was obtained. In this condition, percentage recovery of TPH in soil contaminated with 100mg/kg and 50,000mg/kg as TPH was 95.9% and 95.5%, respectively The volume of solvent lost by volatilization in shaking method was relatively small compared to Soxhlet extraction.
Regional geophysical surveys and geological cal studies on natural gas hydrate (NGH) in the East Sea were carried out by the Korea Institute of Geoscience and Mineral Resources (KIGAM) from 2000 to 2004. 16 piston cores, 2270 L-km of multi-channel reflection seismic (MCRS) data and 730 L-km of 3.5kHz Chirp data obtained from the southwestern part of the deep-water Ulleung Basin were analyzed in this study. In piston cores, cracks generally developed parallel to bedding suggest significant gas content. The core analyses showed high total organic carbon (TOC) content, sedimentation rate and heat flow of sediments. These are in favor of the general ion of substantial biogenic methane, which can form the NGH within the stability zone of the near seafloor sediments in the study area. The cores generally show also high residual hydrocarbon gas concentrations for the formation of natural gas hydrates The geophysical indicators of the presence of gas and/or NGH such as bottom simulating reflectors (BSRs), seismic blank Bones, pockmarks and gas seeping features were well defined on the MCRS and Chirp data.
The degradation and mineralization of crude oil were investigated over 50-days in three soils, loamy sand, sand, and combusted loamy, which were artificially contaminated with crude oil (50 g $kg^{-1}$) and inoculated with Nocardia sp. H17-1. The degradation efficiency of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) in sand was the highest at 76% among the three soils. The TPH degradation rate constants $(k_{TPH})$ in loamy sand, sand, and combusted loamy sand were 0.027 $d^{-1}$, 0.063 $d^{-1}$, and 0.016 $d^{-1}$, respectively. In contrast, the total amount of $CO_2$ evolved was the highest at 146.1 mmol in loamy sand. The $CO_2$ evolution rate constants (k_{CO2})$ in loamy sand, sand, and combusted loamy sand were 0.057 $d^{-1}$, 0.066 $d^{-1}$, and 0.037 $d^{-1}$, respectively. Therefore, it seems that the degradation of crude oil in soils can be proportional to the soil pore space and that mineralization can be accelerated with the increase of organic substance.
The present study compared the microbial diversity and activity during the application of various bioremediation processes to crude oil-contaminated soil. Five different treatments, including natural attenuation (NA), biostimulation (BS), biosurfactant addition (BE), bioaugmentation (BA), and a combined treatment (CT) of biostimulation, biosurfactant addition, and bioaugmentation, were used to analyze the degradation rate and microbial communities. After 120 days, the level of remaining hydrocarbons after all the treatments was similar, however, the highest rate (k) of total petroleum hydrocarbon (TPH) degradation was observed with the CT treatment (P<0.05). The total bacterial counts increased during the first 2 weeks with all the treatments, and then remained stable. The bacterial communities and alkane monooxygenase gene fragment, alkB, were compared by denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (DGGE). The DGGE analyses of the BA and CT treatments, which included Nocardia sp. H17-1, revealed a simple dominant population structure, compared with the other treatments. The Shannon-Weaver diversity index (H') and Simpson dominance index (D), calculated from the DGGE profiles using 16S rDNA, showed considerable qualitative differences in the community structure before and after the bioremediation treatment as well as between treatment conditions.

Measurements of non-methane hydrocarbons (NMHC) were carried out in the Sangdo tunnel and on a nearby roadway in Seoul during the during the periods of heavy(low speed with ∼20km h(sup)-1) and light(high speed with ∼60kmh(sup)-1) traffic in February 2000. In the tunnel, the total NMHC levels during the heavy traffic period were higher than those during the light traffic period by a factor of 2. This was due to the increase of emissions at the low vehicle speed period and the higher dilution effect derived from faster flow of tunnel air at the high vehicle speed period. The average total NMHC concentration in the tunnel was 1.7 times as high as that on the roadway. The species with the highest concentration in the tunnel was ethylene(50.1 ppb), followed by n-butane(34.1 ppb) and propane (21.9 ppb). The concentration ranking in the tunnel was generally in good agreement with that on the roadway, suggesting that the NMHC compositions in the tunnel and on the nearby roadway were primarily determined by vehicle exhausts. However, the NMHC compositions in the Sangdo tunnel do not agree well with other foreign study results, reflecting that the characteristics of vehicle exhausts of Seoul is different from those of other cities. The most prominent difference between this study and other studies is the high mass fractions of butanes and propane. It was be attributed to the wide use of butane-fueled vehicles.
The polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) content in sewage sludge and in farm soils were determined by gas chromatography linked to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) with use 2-ethylantracene as internal standards. Twelve PAH were identified in both sludges with naphthalene ($0.78{\mu}g/g$) being the most predominant in industrial sludge and pyrene ($0.26{\mu}g/g$) in municipal sludge. The total PAR content in industrial sludge and in municipal sludge were $1.74{\mu}g/g$ and $1.19{\mu}g/g$ respectively. PAH were contained in paddy soils and the concentration were very low in the range of $0.01-0.04{\mu}g/g$. The total PAH content in industrial and in municipal sludge were about 9.2 times and 6.3 times greater than in paddy soils ($0.19{\mu}g/g$).
