Stepwise reductions of glucose and Orange II concentration were observed from the experiment of both white-rot fungi such as T. versicolor and P. chrysosporium. As a result, typical removal patterns in those dual substrate system were categorized through several distinctive steps: initial lag period, primary and secondary carbon consumption periods. Also, based on the total removal amounts of Orange II, COD and Color during the experimental period, similar removal extent were observed from both species experiments, within the maximal error range of 5%. However, it was refereed that the internal steps of Orange II removal on enzymatic level should be different between two species: Enzyme Lac showed good affinity for Orange II removal in T. versicolor, however in P. chrysosporium enzyme LiP represented more close affinity to the similar experimental condition. Thus, even though the superficial removal amount of calcitrant Orange II at different fungal species was merely similar, removal pathway of enzymatic levels and intermediates produced during the fungal decomposition would be different.

Cellulase and xylanase are main hydrolysis enzymes for the degradation of cellulosic and hemicellulosic biomass, respectively. In this study, our aim was to develop and test the efficacy of a rapid, high-throughput method to screen hydrolytic-enzyme-producing microbes. To accomplish this, we modified the 3,5-dinitrosalicylic acid (DNS) method for microwell plate-based screening. Targeted microbial samples were initially cultured on agar plates with both cellulose and xylan as substrates. Then, isolated colonies were subcultured in broth media containing yeast extract and either cellulose or xylan. The supernatants of the culture broth were tested with our modified DNS screening method in a 96-microwell plate, with a $200{\mu}l$ total reaction volume. In addition, the stability and reliability of glucose and xylose standards, which were used to determine the enzymatic activity, were studied at $100^{\circ}C$ for different time intervals in a dry oven. It was concluded that the minimum incubation time required for stable color development of the standard solution is 20 min. With this technique, we successfully screened 21 and 31 cellulase- and xylanase-producing strains, respectively, in a single experimental trial. Among the identified strains, 19 showed both cellulose and xylan hydrolyzing activities. These microbes can be applied to bioethanol production from cellulosic and hemicellulosic biomass.

Fish sauce is one of the most popular fermented fish products over the world. But it is usually manufactured with high salt concentration (>25%) and long periods of elaboration. In order to increase the consumption of fish sauce, the functional anchovy sauces with low salt concentrations (14 and 17%) were manufactured by adding sea tangle (Kjellamaniealla crassifolia), ume (Prunus mume Sieb. et Zucc), tochukaso (Paecilomyces japonica), and chitosan. On 50 days of storage, pH of all treatments decreased to 5.1, while the amount of lactic acid increased continuously as storage period increased. The amounts of VBN, amino-N, and TBA were highest on 50 days of storage and then kept constantly or decreased a little thereafter. The numbers of total viable cell, lactic acid bacteria, proteolytic bacteria, and fungi increased very slowly as storage period increased.
During the controlled atmosphere storage (CA), fresh ginseng showed good appearance in quality, and other deterioration of freshness was not observed until 12 weeks. On the other hand, MA storage had kept freshness only in treatment of 1 until 8 weeks. There was no significant difference between treated and non-treated sample with preservatives, and not treated sample was not infected with various different fungi. Moisture contents and hardness of ginseng in all treatments were not changed much until 12 weeks, and surface shrinkage did not occur either. But shear stress increased somewhat in all treatments after 12 weeks. The granule of microstructure in tissue diminished slightly. The apparent Quality of red ginseng was good until 4 weeks of treatment. But as time passed, white skin and wrinkled skin were generated and darkened in its color. B-1 in CA and E-1 in MA were found to be the most favorable one. The content of crude saponin did not change significantly during storage of CA or MA by preservation conditions and period. Though a small increase in saponin content from 4.92% to 5.43% was recognized in B-1, which was treated with preservative and 6.0% In B-2, control, this could rather explain increment of soluble component by butanol. Thus, there was no change in total contents of ginsenoside pattern and composition of each content. The Rbl content in B-1 and B-2 were 0.98%, and 0.97%, respectively, whereas that of control was 0.96%. E-1 of MA, treated with preservative was 5.32% after 12 weeks, but was 5.73% in control, indicating that ginsenosides pattern was quite similar to that of CA storage.

Present expriments were conducted to determine the possibility of cultivation of Coriolus versicolor selected among the higher fungi growing in Korea. Dried apple sawdust used in this study consisted of 31.5% C, 0.54% N, 2.41 % CaO, 0.05% $P_2O_5$, 0.48% MgO and 0.81% $K_2O$(pH 5.6). Coriolus versicolor mushrooms were cultivated on the sawdust media; apple sawdust; rice bran=80:20 in 850cc polypropylene bottles. The isolate of Coriolus versicolor used was YCV collected from an Apple farm in Youngchun district. It took 34 days to make fruitbody from spawning. The fruit bodies produced the total fresh weight 28 g in a bottles, and converted to 64% of fresh weight.
A one-year-old male Japanese Chin with anorexia, retching, dyspnea and continuous coughing was brought to the Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Chungbuk National University. Chest radiographs showed moderate regional alveolar pattern with mild interstitial patterns in the caudo-dorsal lung fields and the ill-defined mass in the perihilar area which is consistent with perihilar lymphadenopathy. Although the dog showed severe eosinophilia in the complete blood count, the serum profile values were within normal ranges. There was no indication of any parasite infestation in the direct and floatation examination of feces, skin scraping test and heartworm examination. There was no growth of bacteria and fungi in the selected media such as Mueller Hinton broth, Sabouraud Dextrose agar and Potato Dextorse agar, which were inoculated with tracheal fluid collected using endotracheal tube and cultured for 3 days. In the tracheal fluid smear, most prominent cells were eosinophils, which are a almost 80% of total cells and other cells such as leukocytes, neutrophils and ciliated colummar cells were also observed. Any parasite was also not detected in its smear. Prednisolone (PDS; 1 mg/kg, BID SC), aminophylline (10 mg/kg, TID IV) and nebulization with gentamicin (50 mg) plus saline (3 ml) were given for 1 week. At 3rd day of treatment, blood eosinophil value was return to normal range and pulmonary condition was also improved. The allergen test with serum performed during therapy was positive in the 19 index including milk, barley, tomato pomace, catfish, bonito, house dust and wool, and borderline in 10 index including wheat, house dust mites and house fly. The patient is responding well to PDS therapy. Based on these findings, a possible diagnosis of pulmonary infiltration with eosinophils was made in this dog.

This study was conducted to investigate the prevalence of honey bee (Apis mellifera) disease in Daejeon. From May to September in 2014, 63 samples were collected from 63 apiculture farms in the regions and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was conducted. A total of 11 infectious pathogens, including 6 virus, 2 bacteria, 2 fungi, and 1 parasite, were investigated in honeybee colonies suffering from symptom of sudden collapse, depopulation or paralysis. The infectious pathogens and infection rates among 63 honeybee colonies detected were as follows: sacbrood virus (12.7%), chronic bee paralysis virus (1.6%), stonebrood (11.1%), American foulbrood (19.0%), European foulbrood (6.3%), respectively. The result indicate that foul-brood was most prevalent disease in apiculture farms in Daejeon area.
Two kinds of organic materials, powders of Salicornia and Oryza sativa L. wre added as a source of organic matter to the suspensions of saline soils(soil : water = 1:3) to be 4 per cent of dried saline soil grams. And then, the samples were incubated at $28^{\circ}C$ to improve the decomposition of organic materials by soil microflora. Resutls of this experiment are summarized as followings : 1) The pH of soil suspension showed its highest value on the second or third week after the treatments, which were similar to those of the soil microflora. Results of this experiment are summarized as follwings : 1) The pH of soil suspension showed its highest value on the second ot third week after the treatments, which were similar to those of the soil microflora populations. 2) Salinity increased up to the second week and the highest value of it appeared in the samples which were treated with the powder of Salicornia. In general, the salinity of all samples decreased on the third week after the treatment. The fact was assumed the possibilities of desalination from saline soil by the microbial actions. 3) Soil microflora such as bacteria, actinomycetes and fungi, were determined its populations soil microflora is to act as decomposer in soil. Both of the bacteria and actinomycytes population showed in the third weak after the tratment. In general, 30-years old of saline soil contained microbial population much more than those of 5-year old of saline soil. Salicornia powder favored the increase of both the bacteria and fungal population, and Oryza sativa L. seemed to have been a great role in increase of actinomycetes. Especially, fungal population of the untreated soil suspension contained higher microbial populations more than those of the soils treated with both of the organic materials. 4) Sugar contents of soil suspesions decreased remarkably on the first week after the treatments. 5) The amount of nitrate had similar tendency to those of population changes of soil microflora. Total acidity decreased continuously and the amount of potassium showed its highest value on the third week treatment. However, the amount of phosphorus was determined to be insignificant.
The created microbial pesticide was used to examine its effects using the inside-pot test method. The selected microbial pesticide KBC3017 particle pesticide manufactured by using Monacrosporium thaumasium was used in the farm-house outdoor test to find the optimum consistency and its effects. The more amount used, the better effect it showed. However, the optimum consistency was 2% and the KBC3017 particle pesticide for which the diatomite and raw jade powder were used as an increaser, when used 2% level of the total amount of soil, showed 71% effect on nematode prevention. The root and the stem of crops were better compared to those without any pesticide used.

A total of 42 strains of Candida albicans were examined for susceptibility to three antifungal agents, amphotericin B(AMB), 5-fluorocytosine(5-FC), and ketoconazole(KTZ), using defined medium, synthetic amino acid medium-fungal(SAAM-F), supplemented yeast nitrogen base(SYNB) and undefined medium Sabouraud's dextrose broth(SDB) and Kimmig broth media. A tube dilution method was used with minimum inhibitory concentrations(MICs) determined after incubation for 24 hour and 48 hours. All testes were performed in duplicate. In general, MICs were more reproducible after 48 hour of incubation. Forthermore, MICs determined after incubation for 48 hours were significantly higher than those determined after 24 hours. The actural MICs obtained with the different antifungal agents were clearly influenced by the test medium used. The rank order of AMB MICs according to the test medium was as follows: SAAM-F>SYNB>SDB>Kimmig broth. With 5-FC, the following pattern was observed: SYNB>SAAM-F>SDB>Kimmig borth. For ketoconazole, the MICs according to the test medium was SAAM-F>SDB>SYNB> Kimmig broth. In amphotericin B, the MICs mean value with the test medium was as follows: SDB, 0.24 mcg/ml; Kimmig broth, 0.29 mcg/ml; SYNB, 0.21 mcg/ml and SAAM-F, 0.15mcg/ml. The actural value of 5-FC was; SDB, 37.20 mcg/ml; Kimmig broth, 67.41mcg/ml; SYNB, 21.29 mcg/ml and SAAM-F, 24.61 mcg/ml and in ketoconazole, the MICs value was; SDB, 1.83 mcg/ml; Kimmig broth, 4.08 mcg/ml; SYNB, 1.95 mcg/ml and SAAM-F, 1.41 mcg/ml. The results of this investigation suggested that broth dilution susceptibility testing of yeast and yeast-like fungi are best performed with an incubation period of 48 hours. Furthermore, medium composition can significantly influence the results of such testing.
