The main objective of this research lies in estimating how much importance the educators of professional general education and MSC curriculum put on assessment, and, thereafter, take what support should be provided for the efficient assessment of education. The subjects of this research are educators of professional general education and MSC curriculum in the engineering education enrichment program at the 58 universities out of 72 universities where the accreditation for engineering education is implemented. Accordingly questionnaires were distributed to a total of 58 universities among which 136 questionnaires were collected. The data analysis methods, mean and response sample T test, were used in this research. The following conclusions were drawn from the results of this research. First, tile mean of importance and performance in the 'assessment activities' were relatively high. However, in tile assessment, the assessment performance was relatively lower than the assessment importance. Second, the results of the Importance-Performance Matrix in the 'assessment activities' was analyzed by two ways. First, Analyzed with the scale mean, The result means that Keep up the Good Work (KGW) sector included all factors. Second, Analyzed with the actual mean, The result means that KGW sector included 5 factors A, J, B, D, C. Possible Overkill(PO) sector included factors C, I. Low Priority(LP) sector included 4 factors K, E, H, L. Concentrate Here (CH) sector included factor G.

BACKGROUND: Most of the tailings have been left without any management in abandoned metalliferous mines and have become the main source of heavy metal contamination for agricultural soils and crops in the these areas. METHODS AND RESULTS: This experiment was carried out to investigate the assessment of the heavy metal contamination in paddy soils located on downstream of the closed metalliferous mine. The average total concentrations of cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), lead (Pb), zinc (Zn), and arsenic (As) in paddy soils were 8.88, 56.7, 809, 754, and 37.9 mg/kg, respectively. Specially, the average concentrations of Cd, Pb and Zn were higher than those of warning criteria for soil contamination(4 mg/kg for Cd, 200 mg/kg for Pb, and 300 mg/kg for Zn) in agricultural soil established by Soil Environmental Conservation Act in Korea. The proportions of 0.1 M HCl extractable Cd, Cu, Pb, Zn, and As concentration to total concentration of these heavy metals in paddy soils were 27.7, 21.3, 35.1, 13.8 and 10.5%, respectively. The pollution index of these five metals in paddy soils ranged from 0.42 to 11.92. Also, the enrichment factor (EFc) of heavy metals in paddy soils were in the order as Cd>Pb>Zn>Cu>As, and the enrichment factor in paddy soil varied considerably among the sampling sites. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) of heavy metals in soils were in the order as Cd>Pb>Zn>Cu>As, specially, the average geoaccumulation index of Cd, Pb, and Zn (Igeo 2.49~3.10) were relatively higher than that of other metals in paddy soils. CONCLUSION: Based on the pollution index, enrichment factor, and geoaccumulation index for heavy metal in paddy soils located on downstream of closed metalliferous mine, the main contaminants are mine waste materials and mine drainage including mine activity.

Granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF) is a cytokine that stimulates the production of granulocytes, macrophages, and white blood cells. The effects of osmotic pressure on secretion of human GM-CSF into the culture medium were investigated in suspension cultures of transgenic tobacco cells. An increase in osmotic pressure caused by the addition of mannitol decreased the cell size index, with the effect being more pronounced when cells were measured wet rather than dry. Increased osmotic pressure enhanced the secretion of hGM-CSF. At 90 g/L mannitol, the maximum concentration tested, hGM-CSF was present in the culture medium at 980 ug/L. As the concentration of mannitol increased, the total amount of protein secreted also increased, but was disproportionately enriched in GM-CSF NaCl, another osmoticum, had very similar effects on cell growth and hGM-CSF production, but did not cause enrichment for hGM-CSF Additionally, protein-stabilizing polymer was added to culture broth to enhance stability of secreted recombinant protein. Finally, above two method were applied together to maximize the productivity.
Total 20 surface sediments were collected in Anjung bay to investigate the physicochemical environment and heavy metal contents. The physicochemical investigation ranged from 6.41% to 11.68% (average $9.52{\pm}1.28%$) for ignition loss (IL), from 17.99 mg/g to 43.84 mg/g (average $27.53{\pm}6.39mg/g$) for chemical oxygen demand (COD), and from 0.05 mg/g to 0.61 mg/g (average $0.17{\pm}0.14mg/g$) for acid volatile sulfide (AVS) with significant correlation between water content (W/C) and COD. A contour of spatial distribution indicated higher organic pollution at the bottom of ascidian, Stylea clava, cultural waters. Most of metals contents was not exceeded the NOAA's effect range-low (ERL). Estimated enrichment factor (EF) ranging 0.96-1.12 indicated that the sediment environment of the studied waters was relatively pristine from heavy metal pollution in spite of increased vessel traffics, so far.
The middle cover soils and clay liners collected from the Kumheung landfill in Gongiu City were analysed for As, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, Ni, Pb, Sr, Ti and Zn concentrations using 0.] N HCl digestion and total/sequential extraction experiments followed by ICP-AES determination. The uncontaminated soil and sediment samples were also analyzed for the comparison. The results of sequential extraction showed that Cu was dominant in the oxidizable fraction, and As, Ni, Sr, Ba, and Mn were in the exchangeable fraction. Zinc and Mn occurred mostly in association with reducible, residual and carbonate fractions. Most of Cd and Pb were bound to the reducible and oxidizable fractions. The main carrier of Co, Cr, Fe and 11 was the residual fraction and another important carrier was the reducible fraction. The percentage of the metals of organically-bound form in the middle cover soils and clay liner was in the order of Cu(48%) > Ti(42%) > Pb(27%) > As(25%) > Cd(20%). As deduced from sequential extraction analysis, potential order of metal mobility in the middle cover soils and clay liner from the landfill was proposed: Cd > Sr > As > Ni > Mn > Ba > Cu > Pb > Zn » Co > 11 > Fe > Cr. Based on the 'geoaccumulation index' and the 'enrichment factor' normalized to A], the level of contamination of Cu, Ni and C1' was significant in the samples from Kumheung landfill and surrounding farmland. Their enrichments were attributed partly to anthropogenic pollutions.

A total of 48 samples of street dust were collected in Daegu area during April and May 2006, were sieved below 100 ${\mu}m$, and analysed by ICP for the analysis of 14 elements after an acid extraction. Results obtained from the source assessment of trace elements using enrichment factor showed that Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na and V were influenced by natural sources such as soil and dust, while Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn were influenced by urban anthropogenic sources such as fuel combustion and waste incineration. The measured values were remarkably higher in components from natural sources than in components from urban anthropogenic sources. The concentrations of trace elements in Daegu area were generally higher than in other foreign cities. Samples originated from industrial and commercial areas had higher concentrations of trace elements and pollution indices of heavy metals than those from residential and green areas. The correlation analysis among trace elements indicated that the correlations among components from urban anthropogenic sources were much significant, while those among components from natural sources were less correlated. In addition there were significant correlations between traffic density and components from urban anthropogenic sources.
Bottom sediments from Youngil Bay, East Coast of Korea, were analyzed for grain composition as well as elemental compositions and total organic carbon (TOC) content in order to investigate the spatial variability and content of metal elements. Grain size distribution of the sediments seems to be controlled by anticlockwise current pattern with bottom topography of the study area. Spatial variability of TOC and all elemental contents reflects those of grain size, but an exception was found in the harbor area (Old-Port): their contents are high in the central part of the bay with the muddy sediment and decrease toward the sand-dominated coastal zone. However, contents of Ca, Sr, K are high in the sand-dominated coastal zone and contents of some heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn) are high in the Old-Port area and the mouth of Hyeongsan River. The correlation matrix and R-mode factor analyses reveal that four important factors controlling the distribution of metals in the bay are sediment grain size (or quartz dilution effect), the formation of sulfide minerals associated with decomposition of organic matters under anoxic geochemical environment, calcium carbonate (mainly shell fragments) and coarse-grained feldspar mineral. According to the metal content of labile fraction an CER (concentration enrichment ratio) value, high accumulation of some heavy metals in the harbor area seems to result not formed by early diagenetic processes under anoxic environment.
The analysis of heavy metals associated with both PM2.5 and PM10 fraction of aerosols was made from a northeast region of Seoul during the spring period of 2001. The mean concentrations of fine (PM2.5), coarse (PM10-PM2.5), and PM10 fraction were observed as 49.3${\pm}$29.2, 50.5${\pm}$35.0, and 95.5${\pm}$46.1 ${\mu}g$/m$^3$, respectively during this study period. According to the results of enrichment factor (EF) analysis between different particle fractions, major elements (including Fe, Ca, Na, and K) were found to exhibit EF values of less than 10. However, heavy metal components (like Zn and Pb) showed very high EF values. Comparison of fine/coarse (F/C) concentration ratio showed that Zn, Cr, Pb, and Ni have higher ratio values than others. The metallic composition of particles was also compared on both absolute and relative terms. The results of our analysis showed an evidence that the increase in the total metallic contents is prominent during the spring period due mostly to the Asian Dust event.

In order to determine the distribution characteristics of the heavy metals in surface sediments of the eastern Yellow Sea, heavy metal concentrations (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd, Cr, Mn, As, Ni, Co, Li, Fe and Al) together with grain size and total organic carbon (TOC), were analyzed. The concentrations of all heavy metals, with the exception of Pb, Mn and As in some stations, were relatively high in the central area of the Yellow Sea and tended to decrease toward the Korean coast. A significant relationship between grain size and concentrations of heavy metals suggested that they were mostly controlled by quartz dilution effect. However, at some stations, Pb, Mn and As exhibited different distribution patterns. For Pb, the differences were caused by petrogenetic influences (feldspar) in coarse-grained sediments. In the case of Mn, biogenetic influences ($CaCO_3$) affected distribution patterns. As was distributed differently because of the existence of a heavy mineral (pyrite). A comparison with previous data (collected in 2000) shows that the heavy metal concentration in the eastern Yellow Sea has not increased over the past fifteen years. The sedimentary environment of dumping sites in the Yellow Sea has not been significantly improved during this period. The results of the pollution assessment revealed that the concentrations of heavy metals in the study area were lower than lower criteria (TEL, MSQ-1) in Korean and Chinese sediment quality guidelines. The enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index ($I_{geo}$) and ecological risk index (ERI) of Cu, Pb, Zn and Cr were higher in the central area of the Yellow Sea.
Partial enteral nutrition (PEN) supplemented with insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) to neonatal piglets receiving parenteral nutrition increases lactase-phlorizin hydrolase (LPH) activity, but not LPH mRNA. The goal of the current study was to investigate the mechanism by which IGF-I up-regulates LPH activity. We hypothesized that IGF-I regulates LPH synthesis post-transcriptionally. Methods: Newborn piglets (n=15) received 100% parenteral nutrition (TPN), 80% parenteral nutrition + 20% PEN (PEN), or PEN + IGF-I (1.0mg/kg/d). On day 7, two stable isotopes of leucine, [$^2 H_3$]-leucine and [$^{13}C_1$]-L-leucine were intravenously administered to measure mucosal protein and brush LPH (BB LPH) synthesis. Results: Weight gain, nutrient intake and jejunal weight and length were similar among the treatment groups. PEN increased mucosal weight, villus width and cross-sectional area, LPH activity, mRNA expression and the abundance of proLPHh compared to 100% TPN (p<0.05). IGF-I further increased mucosal weight, LPH activity and LPH activity per unit BB LPH ~2-fold over PEN alone (p<0.05), but did not affect LPH mRNA or the abundance of proLPHh or mature LPH. Isotopic enrichment of [$^2 H_3$]-leucine and [$^{13}C_1$]-L-leucine in plasma, mucosal protein and LPH precursors, and the fractional and absolute synthesis rates of mucosal protein and LPH were similar among the treatment groups. Total mucosal protein synthesis was increased 60% (p<0.05) and LPH synthesis tended (p=0.14) to be greater in the IGF-I treated animals compared to the other two groups. Conclusions: The primary mechanism by which IGF-I up-regulates LPH may be post-translational, either via reducing LPH turnover, or by specifically altering LPH activity.
