It is desirable to reduce the amounts of fresh water and reuse the recycled water in papermaking process. In an attempt to improve the efficiency of recycling water refining treatment and to enhance the productivity of OCC recycling mill, up flow anaerobic sludge blanket(UASB) reactor was developed and introduced to Korea recently. In order to maximize the operating efficiency and minimize the adverse side effects it is imperative to estimate and evaluate the total effects of new system, UASB on the whole OCC recycling process. This study was carried out with a view to investigate the effects of the high temperature and alkalinity of process water on the quality ad productivity of testliner of OCC recycling mill which is equipped with UASB reactor and almost closed. Another object of this study was searching for the best available use of UASB treated process water. The results were as follows; Reuse of UASB treated water characterized with high temp and alkalinity was useful to improve the strength and drainage properties of recycled OCC owing to its good points of promoting OCC disintegration and reducing the calcium hardness of process water. However, it might not be avoidable to induce the increase of dissolved solids in process water in accordance with direct introducing of UASB treated water into the former stage of OCC stock preparation. So it would be advisable to adopt the UASB treated water in the stage of clean, screened OCC stock.
The treatment efficiencies of domestic sewage treatment processes were analysed and assessed to suggest and design a suitable technology for coal seam gas (CSG) water treatment. Two sewage treatment plants (S and G in Busan) were selected. The former operates with standard activated sludge and modified Ludzak Ettinger processes while the later uses the combination of $A_2/O$ and gravity fiber filtration. For both plants, the concentrations of BOD, $COD_{Mn}$, T-N and T-P were about 5.0, 19.0, 5.0, 11.0 and 1.0 ppm, respectively, which satisfy the discharge standards. Therefore, although sewage treatment processes seems to be applicable for CSG water treatment, additional processes to remove total dissolved solids and ionic compounds (i.e. bicarbonate) need to be introduced to produce fit-for-purpose water resources for beneficial use (in accordance with Water ACT 2013). This, for the CSG treatment process design, it is necessary to align the operating conditions with merging methods of combinable unit technology obtained from sewage treatment processes.
This study aimed to assay the biological removal of TDS (total dissolved solids) from RO (reverse osmosis) rejected water. Following bio-sorption of TDS with AGS (aerobic granular sludge), the effects of TDS on biological nitrogen removal were examined. The bio-sorption of TDS after AGS treatment was confirmed by checking for TDS removal efficiency and surface analysis of microorganisms with SEM and EDS. Then, the effects of TDS on biological nitrogen removal and the denitrification efficiency were evaluated using the MBR reactor. According to the results, the bio-sorption of TDS with AGS was 0.1 mg TDS/mg AGS, and we confirmed that the microorganism surfaces had adsorbed the TDS. Biological nitrogen removal efficiency was measured at inhibiting denitrification at 4,000 mg/L of TDS-injected material. Based on this study, it is necessary to pretreat TDS-containing RO rejected water and to maintain TDS concentration lower than a specific value (≤4,000 mg/L), when considering biological nitrogen removal.
This study aims to analyze the changes in the benthic macroinvertebrate community before and after a restoration project in a eutrophic stream. Species diversity and species richness increased at the points where the channel changed from standing water to running water. However, species diversity and richness decreased at the points where only riparian restoration was implemented, and the concentration of suspended solids increased, while biochemical oxygen demand and total phosphorus decreased and the concentration of dissolved oxygen increased. In such reaches, functional feeding groups went from collector-filterers to collector-gatherers, and habitat orientation groups changed from clingers to burrowers.
Natural mineral water is generally quite different from ordinary drinking water due to its original nature and various properties. The complexity of natural mineral water requires, therefore, not only to identify its nature and proper characteristics, but also to classify them by a reasonable scientific basis of comparison. The study was concentrated on a possible classification technique to natural mineral waters by their constitutions and physico-ehemical properties. The classification was carried out by the computation of such numerical parameters as ionic equivalent percentage, electrolytic conductance or mobility, ionic molecular weight, molecular concentration, equivalent conductivity and degree of ionization in consideration of the determinative criteria as follows -particular single element or molecule -major components of natural waters as bicarbonate, sulphate, chloride, caloride, calcium, magnesium, and sodium -moleculat concentration related to blood osmotic pressure -water temperature at emergence from spring -contents of free carbon dioxide (CO2) -pH value of water -total dissolved solids or salts (NaCl) The results obtained proved out to be clearly distinguhhable from ordinary drinking water as far as concern natural mineral water as an example on the subject -simple water -bicarbonate-predominating water -cold spring -carbonated-non gaseous water -weak alkaline water -non saline water Putting these various results together, the sample turned out to be a kind of natural mineral water that can be used as a drinking water if microbiologically safe.
We investigated the characteristics of various Tofu coagulants extracted from sea tangle using treated deep ocean water (DOW) as the solvents. The coagulants were typical solutions extracted from sea tangle using raw DOW and strongly electrolyzed acidic (SAC) or alkaline (SAK) water. The total dissolved solids (TDS), NaCl and electric conductivity were increased in the coagulant solution extracted by SAC than the others. In the coagulant solutions extracted by acidic electrolyzed solvent, aspartic acid content (13.5 mg/100 g) was higher than others (11.2 and 12.1 mg/100 g). The Tofu obtained using coagulants extracted with treated DOW had the water contents ranging from 79.55% to 80.04%. The contents of crude protein (12.1 g/100 g) and Na, Ca, K and Mg were relatively higher than general Tofu commercially available. Therefore, coagulant solutions extracted from sea tangle using treated DOW can be used to develop natural high-grade tofu for practical use.
China is one of the countries with the highest reserves of coal bed methane (CBM) in the world. Likewise, the CBM industry is significantly growing in China. However, activities related to CBM development have led to more environmental problems, which include serious environmental damage and pollution caused by CBM-produced water. In this paper, the detailed characteristics of CBM-produced water in the southern Qinshui Basin were investigated and analyzed and compared with local surface water and coal mine drainage. Most of CBM-produced water samples are contaminated by higher concentration of total dissolved solids (TDS), K (Potassium), Na (Sodium) and $NH_4$. The alkalinity of the water from coalmines and CBM production was higher than that of the local surface water. The concentrations of some trace elements such as P (Phosphorus), Ti (Titanium), V (Vanadium), Cr (Chromium), Ni (Nickel), Zn (Zinc), Ge (Germanium), As (Arsenic), Rb (Rubidium), and Pd (Palladium) in water from the coalmines and CBM production are higher than the acceptable standard limits. The ${\delta}D$ and ${\delta}^{18}O$ values of the CBM-produced water are lower than those of the surface water. Similarly, the ${\delta}D$ values of the CBM-produced water decreased with increasing drainage time.
Removal of waste generated by Paralichthys olivaceus in the seawater aquarium using a foam separator was investigated. Protein concentration without a foam separator continuously increased until 3 days after stocking and reached at 25 mg/L after 5 days stocking, but protein concentration became lower than the initial protein concentration (2.5 mg/L) with a foam separator. The trends of other fish wastes such as ammonia, total suspended solids (TSS) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were similar to protein. Dissolved oxygen (DO) in the aquarium decreased below 6.0 mg/L without a foam separator, but with a foam separator the average DO in the aquarium was 7.3 mg/L. Foam separation with the increase of superficial air velocity (SAV) was more effective than that with the fixed SAV. This study showed that wastewater. treatment of seawater aquarium using a foam separator is effective method for a fish waste removal and oxygen supply.
Sponge ball cleaning can generate an abrasion effect, which leads to an attractive increasing in both permeate flux and membrane rejection. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of the daily sponge ball cleaning (SBC) on the performance of different UF cross-flow membrane modules integrated with a bioreactor. Two 1"-membrane modules and one 1/2"-membrane module were tested. The parameters measured and controlled are temperature, pH, viscosity, particle size, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), total suspended solids (TSS), and permeate flux. The permeate flux could be improved by 60%, for some modules, after 11 days of daily sponge ball cleaning at a transmembrane pressure of 350 kPa and a flow velocity of 4 m/s. Rejection values of all tested modules were improved by 10%. The highest permeate flux of 195 L/㎡.h was achieved using a 1"-membrane module with the aid of its negatively charged membrane material and the daily sponge ball cleaning. In addition, the enhancement in the permeate flux caused by daily sponge ball cleaning improved the energy specific demand for all tested modules. The negatively charged membrane showed the lowest energy specific demand of 1.31 kWh/㎥ in combination with the highest flux, which is a very competitive result.

This study investigates experimentally the impact of magnetized water (MW) on the fresh and hardened characteristics of concrete. Five types of MW are produced using magnetic fields of 1.4 and 1.6 Tesla for treating water with 100, 150, and 250 cycles. The concrete properties are assessed using the slump test, compressive strength test, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis, energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), and Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometry (FTIR). Furthermore, the chemical-physical characteristics of tap water (TW) and MW are evaluated. The results showed the magnetic field intensity has a significant impact on the magnetization effect; the best magnetizing conditions were found when TW was exposed successively to magnetic fields of 1.6 T and 1.4 T for 150 cycles. In addition, 150 MW cycles can be used to improve the compressive strength and workability of concrete by 40% and 17%, respectively. pH, total dissolved solids, and electrical conductivity improved by 15%, 17%, and 7%, respectively, when using MW. Additionally, MW can be used to enhance cement hydration chemical processes and made concrete's structure denser.
