Adsorption equilibrium data of pure solvent vapors (n-Hexane, Toluene, MEK) as well as their binary mixtures on activated carbon (sorbonorit $B_4$) were experimentally determined in the range of 293.2~323.2 K and beyond saturated vapor pressure corresponding to experimental temperature. Langmuir, Freundlich, LRC, W-VSM, FH-VSM were estimated for the predication of single component as well as binary mixtuer systems. The isosteric heat of adsorption at infinite dilution of pure n-hexane, toluene, MEK on activated carbon were 45.18, 25.85, 34.62 Kcal/mol, respectively, also, n-hexane-toluene binary adsorption of activated carbon formed an azeotrope at 293.2 K and total pressure 5.1~10.3 mmHg.
Minimized canister flow restriction and maximized flow uniformity are desired to maximize a purge capability. With the impending ORVR(On Board Refueling Vapor Recovery) systems, the reduction of restriction and increase of flow uniformity in a carbon canister becomes even more critical to meet the stringent regulation. In this study, three-dimensional numerical simulations have been performed to investigate the three-dimensional internal flow patterns in a carbon canister during purge. The effects of the declined angle of the purge pipe and the number of partitions on the pressure drop and purge efficiency in a carbon packed bed are examined. Results show that the purge efficiency and space velocity distribution are affected in the upstream region of 40% of total canister bed by porosity of carbon granule and angle of purge pipe. It is also found that the purge efficiency decreases with increasing the number of partitions.
In order to evaluate landfill stabilization based on organic carbon, stoichiometric analysis and a biological methane potential (BMP) test based on modeling were performed at the 2nd Sudokwon Landfill Site. Mass balance analysis through a BMP test proved to be more adaptable for evaluation, and it showed that 28.9% of landfill organic carbon was expected to remain by 2046, 30 years after landfill closure. The organic carbon ratio of total landfill waste for 2046 is forecasted as 2.9% in demolition waste and 5.1% in household waste, and, if one were to consider plastic as an organic waste, the ratios would increase to 15.9% and 28.3%, respectively. Therefore, it seems that organic matter biodegradation facilitating measures such as bioreactor landfill technology and preemptive recovery of combustible waste are necessary to shorten post closure management periods and to meet the landfill stabilization guidelines more safely.
Pyrolytic carbon layer was coated on A1203 balls by fluidized bed type chemical vapour deposition unit to develop the coating technology for the preparation of coated nuclear fuel. The deposition was carried out at the temperature ranges between 110$0^{\circ}C$ and 130$0^{\circ}C$ with various gas contents and flow rates. Source and carrier gas were propane and argon, respectively. X-ray analysis shows that the deposition layer was typical carbon spectra. The growth rate of carbon layer depended on the amount of source gas and the deposition temperature. For the alumina balls with 2mm in diameter, the deposition rate was 11${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$/hr in the flow gases containing 30% source gas at 130$0^{\circ}C$ with a total flow rate of 2.0$\ell$/min. Microstructural observation of the deposits with scanning electron microscope revealed that the deposits had relatively dense and isotropic structure. Chemical analysis by energy dispersive spectroscopy showed that the layer was pure carbon.
Elemental carbon (EC) and organic carbon (OC) thermal/optical methods for the analysis of ambient particulate matter were used to analyze twenty-two $PM_{2.5}$ samples along collected from May 28 to June 20 of 2016 at the Anmyeon measurement site ($36.32^{\circ}N$; $126.19^{\circ}E$). The three laboratory OCEC protocols, which are the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH5040), the Interagency Monitoring of Protected Visual Environments_A(IMPROVE_A), and European Supersites for Atmospheric Aerosol Research2 (EUSAAR2), were utilized for the aerosol characterization experiment as in intercomparisons between three protocols. There are excellent agreement for total carbon (i.e. sum of EC and OC), but statistically significant differences were observed in the split between the measured EC and OC. IMPROVE_A EC values were always larger than both NIOSH5040 and EUSAAR2 protocols. These methods exhibited significantly different temperature-distributions based on thermogram analysis, which is normalized to total carbon. In this study, a protocol for carbonaceous analysis is suggested for the Korean Peninsula.
Two different methods for TOC (Total Organic Carbon) analysis of livestock manure including high strength solid organics were evaluated. Firstly, an analyzing method by dilution after pre-treated by Ultrasonicator and 100 mesh sieve for homogenization was defined as TOC 1; and secondly method divided by particulate organic carbon (POC) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) was defined as TOC 2. 116 samples collected from 56 farms were analyzed in TOC1, TOC2, BOD and VSS. TOC1 method showed higher accuracy at less than 30,000 mg/L of TOC while TOC2 method presented significant reliability at over that concentration. Regarding to the sample with the same VSS concentration, the correlation between TOC 2 and VSS (${\rho}$: 0.806) was slightly higher than that between TOC 1 and VSS (${\rho}$: 0.784), resulted from a relatively low loss of solids and a low error probability (dilution and homogenization effects) in the analyzing procedures. In addition, the reliability between POC and VSS in TOC2 was high and the POC was about 4.4 fold that of the VSS. Consequently, TOC 2 without dilution effect was assessed as a proper method to increase the analyzing accuracy of swine manure including high solid organics.
To investigate secondary carbonaceous species within PM$_{10}$ and PM$_{2.5}$ in Seoul urban Metropolitan Area (SMA), Korea. atmospheric particulate matters samples were collected at two sites of SMA at UOS (The University Of Seoul station) sites and IHU (InHa University of Incheon station) during the period of 4 to 14 January and 12 to 22 May, 11 to 15 August 2004, and their characteristics were qualitatively discussed. during January and May and August of 2004. Daily average mass concentration 0.095 mg/㎥ in PM$_{10}$ and 0.053 mg/㎥ in PM$_{2.5}$ for mass respectively. were observed in SMA. The concentrations of carbonaceous species contributed 18.4% and 16.4% of PM$_{2.5}$ and PM$_{10}$ during the sampling period, respectively, of which OC accounted for 68% and 52% more of the total carbon (TC). OC and EC concentrations and their mass percentages were higher in PM$_{2.5}$ than in PM$_{10}$ which could be attributed to generation process. Organic aerosols would constitute up to 38% of PM$_{2.5}$ based on the evaluation of 1.6 for the ratio of OC to organic particulate. Secondary organic carbon (SOC) were estimated to be more than 13% and up to 68% of total OC based on the minimum OC/EC ratio of 1.06/1.11 using least square method. Comparisons of OC and EC with trace elements. As results of carbonaceous species analysis, the dominant factor in view of fine particle (PM$_{10}$/PM$_{2.5}$) is primary emission source such as mobile, fossil fuel combustion etc. during winter time in SMA. But in summer periods, remarkable fine particle increasing factor was secondary organic carbon dependent to photochemical reaction. reaction.n. reaction.

In this study, inter-laboratory comparison was done using elemental analyzer-isotope ratio mass spectrometers (EA-IRMSs) to determine carbon and nitrogen contents as well as stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic compositions (${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$) of five environmental samples containing lake and marine sediments, higher plant leaves, and fish muscle, and one organic analytical standard (Protein (Casein) Standard OAS). Five national laboratories participated in this comparison study, and each laboratory analyzed all five samples and the analytical standard. Results showed that variations in total organic carbon (TOC) and total nitrogen (TN) contents as well as ${\delta}^{13}C_{TOC}$ and ${\delta}^{15}N_{TN}$ values among the laboratories were large compared to the analytical uncertainties. The results highlighted the inhomogeneity of the test samples and thus, the need to select suitable standard reference materials for future inter-laboratory studies. Further inter-laboratory comparison exercises could promote good measurement practices in the acquisition of stable carbon and nitrogen isotopic composition data.
