  • A natural analogue study has been performed for the Koongarra uranium ore deposit in Australia as an international agreement of the Analogue Studies in the Alligator Rivers Region (ASARR). Rocks obtained from the Koongarra deposit, Northern Territory of Australia, were examined in order to understand uranium migration processes of primary and secondary ore-body in both weathered and unweathered zones. Total alpha activities of rock samples were measured to compare the relative amount of uranium in the sample. Uranium distributions have been investigated by means of both the alpha-autoradiography and the fission track registration technique after irradiation in a flux of thermal neutrons (~10$\times$$10^{13}$nㆍ$cm^{-2}$ㆍs$^{-1}$) for 2 minutes. The mineral phases corresponding to the registered alpha-tracks and fission tracks were identified by petrological observation with optical microscope as well as X-ray diffraction and electron microprobe analysis (EPMA). Uranium was found mostly inside of the fracture of the quartzite and its mineral phase was identified as sklodowskite. The mineral phase associated with high uranium concentration was found as illeminite by petrological observation with optical microscope as well as EPMA.

  • Recently, chronic gamma radiation exposure on biological effects in middle dose-rates have become a serious concern. We investigated the biological effects of middle dose chronic exposure to gamma ray. Fifty male 6-week-old specific free Balb/c mice were randomly divided into five groups (four groups irradiated and one non-irradiated control group). Gamma radiation exposed in Gamma phytotron on Advanced Radiation Technology Institute (Jeongeup, Korea). Irradiation was carried out for 1 or 2 weeks using gamma rays at dose rates of 45 and $50mGy\;h^{-1}$ with total doses 7.56 Gy ($45mGy\;h^{-1}$, 1 week), 8.4 Gy ($50mGy\;h^{-1}$, 1 week), 15.12 Gy ($45mGy\;h^{-1}$, 2 weeks) and 16.8 Gy ($50mGy\;h^{-1}$, 2 weeks). After irradiation, immediately we sacrificed and counted body and organ weights. Moreover we counted spleen cell numbers. Compared with control non-irradiated group, all irradiated groups of body and spleen weights showed significant decreased. However, no significant alteration was observed between same irradiated period groups. In spleen cell numbers, reduced compared to the control group. However, significant alteration was observed between same irradiated period groups ($45mGy\;h^{-1}$, $50mGy\;h^{-1}$). These results demonstrated biological effects according to the radiation dose rate and irradiated period.

  • Three-dimensional dose calculations based on CT images are fundamental to stereotactic radiosurgery for small intracranial tumor. In our stereotactic radiosurgery program, irradiations have been performed using the 6 MV photon beam of linear accelerator after stereotactic CT investigations of the target center through the beam's-eye view and the coordinates of BRW frame converted to that of radiosurgery. Also we can describe the tumor diameter and the shape in three dimensional configuration. Non-coplanar irradiation technique was developed that it consists of a combination of a moving field with a gantry angle of $140^{\circ}$, and a horizontal couch angle of $200^{\circ}C$ around the isocenter. In this radiosurgery technique, we provide the patient head setup in the base-ring holder and rotate around body axis. The total gantry moving range shows angle of 2520 degrees via two different types of gantry movement in a plane perpendicular to the axis of patient. The 3-D isodose curves overlapped to the tumor contours in screen and analytic dose profiles in calculation area were provided to calculate the thickness of $80\%$ of tumor center dose to $20\%$ of that. Furtheremore we provided the 3-D dose profiles in entire calculation plane. In this experiments, measured isodose curves in phantom irradiation have shown very similiar to that of computer generations.

  • Purpose : The main Purpose of this study is to develop new payment rates for services of Radiation Oncology, considering costs of treating patients. Material and Methods : A survey of forty hospitals has been conducted in order to analyze the costs of treating patients. Before conducting the survey, we evaluated and reclassified the individual service items currently using as Payments units on the fee-for-service reimbursement system. This study embodies the analysis of replies received from the twenty four hospitals. The survey contains informations about the hospitals' costs of 1995 for the reclassified service items on Radiation Oncology. After we adjust the hospital costs by the operating rate of medical equipment, we compare the adjusted costs with the current Payment rates of individual services. Results : The current payment rates were 5.05-6.58 times lower than the adjusted costs in treatment planning services, 2.22 times lower in block making service, 1.57-2.86 times lower in external beam irradiation services, 3.82-5.01 times lower in intracavitary and interstitial irradiation and 1.12-2.55 times lower in total body irradiation. Conclusion : We could conclude that the current payment system on Radiation Oncology does not only reflect the costs of treating patients appropriately but also classify the service items correctly. For an example, when the appropriate costs and classification are applied to TBI, the payment rates of TBI should be increased five times more than current level.

  • Between August 1987 and July 1991, 22 patients with acute nonlymphocytic leukemia have received allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) with non-T-lymphocyte-depleted marrow obtained from matched sibling donors. Of these patients, 12 patients were in first complete remission (CR) and 10 patients in second CR or greater or in relapse. All patients were treated with a preparative regimen consisting of cyclophosphamide (CTX, 60 mg/kg) or combined drugs, and 850 cGy single-dose or $150\~200$ cGy fractionated total body irradiation (TBI) administered twice daily for a total dose of $1200\~1320$ cGy. Survivors have been followed from 8 to 64.5 months (median, 24 months). The overall 2 year survival rate, relapse rate and incidence of radiation pneumonitis and graft versus host disease (GVHD) have been evaluated by age, phase of disease, initial WBC count, modality of TBI or conditioning chemotherapy. Overall 2 year survival was $58{\%}$. The median survival was 31 months and mean survival was 23.2 months. Overall survival have significant impact in patients of age >19 years old (p=0.008), patients in first CR (p=0.09). Two year survival rate is significantly correlated with age ( >19 vs $\leqq$19, $79.4\%$ vs $14.3\%$, p=0.0008), regimen of chemotherapy (CTX vs combined drug, $76.9\%\;vs\;33.3\%$, p=0.04), phase of disease (1st CR vs \geqq2nd$ CR or relapse, $83.3\%\;vs\;30\%$, p=0.01) and method of TBI (fractionated vs single dose, $70.7\%\;vs\;37.5\%$, p=0.05). The influence of French-American-British (FAB) subtypes on relapse rate is not significant, but initial WBC count > 20000/$mm^3$ is associated with increased relapse rate. There is difference in the rate of radiation pneumonitis ($14.3\%\;vs\;25\%$), GVHD ($14.3\%\;vs\;50\%$) and relapse ($21.4\%\;vs\;50\%$) according to fractionated versus single-dose TBI. As mentioned above, fractionated TBI is compatible for the preparative regimen combined with chemotherapy En allogeneic BMT of first CR patients under 41 years of age with suitable donor. Those results from a retrospective, non-randomized study clearly need additional clinical data, ideally from a randomized study.

  • The increased occurrence of hyperglycemia and oxidative stress in streptozotocin (STZ) induced type I diabetes has been implicated in the etiology and pathology of disease complication. STZ has known to be genotoxic in a variety of assays including tests for microbial mutagenesis and unscheduled DNA synthesis in rat kidney. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a pathologic condition, resulting in severe metabolic imbalances and non-physiologic changes in many tissues. We examined the effect of gamma radiation and KWNP on preventing the development of insulin dependent diabetes mellitus using streptozotocin-induced Fisher 344 diabetic rats. The hematological values (red blood cell and white blood cell), serum biochemical constituents-alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total cholesterol, triglycerides and insulin-were checked and the organs (testis, spleen and kidney) were weighed. The gonad indices of the STZ treated groups were much lower than the value of the control group. But the gonad indices of the KWNP treated groups were higher than those of the treated groups. The ratio of the weight of kidney to the body weight of the STZ treated groups was higher than that of the control group. The value of the diabetic group treated with KWNP after irradiation (F group) was lower than the other STZ treated groups. The white blood cell and ALP values of the F group were lower than the other STZ groups, as well. The cholesterol and triglyceride values of all the KWNP treated groups were significantly lower than the other groups. A significant increase (about 10 times) of insulin was detected in the F group. The results of hematological assay showed the distinctive damage in the irradiated and STZ treated groups. The quantity of apoptotic cells in seminiferous tubule of testis confirmed a serious damage as assessed in the STZ treated groups. These experimental results have revealed that treatment of the products of KWNP after irradiation has the antidiabetic effect in the STZ-induced diabetic rats. But the F group showed higher recuperative power. These experimental results have revealed that treatment of the gamma irradiation and KWNP have the recovering effect in the STZ-induced diabetic rats.

  • Total Skin Electron Beam Therapy (TSEBT) of linear accelerator has become use so as to be useful, 2~9 MeV of energy territories came to be used with mycosis fungoides and cutaneous lymphomas in the superficial lesion treatment which covers the major portion of the body. I treat a patient to Stanford technique in this study, and it is $60^{\circ}$ around the patients whom Stanford technique irradiated electronic beam to a linear accelerator in horizontal directions and there is a way a standard of TSEBT treat it to six located field (anterior, posterior, and four obliques) becoming. An each field does horizontally it and consist to beam of the two component which fitted the center to a suitable angle. a patient treats it to three dual field a day in order to make short treatment time. when a first day, we treat one dual field at anterior position and two dual field at posterior position. when the second day, treat one dual field at posterior position and two dual field at anterior position. Therefore, six dual field is finished in perfect periodic two days. we made cylindrical acrylic phantom, and I inserted a dosimeter film between phantom. in order to measure a dose distribution calculation before treat a patient, and a patient checked it in six field directions that got from a treatment. It is after that thermoluminescent dosimetry (TLD) as it uses Rando phantom and then measurement dose distribution in six field directions after attaching at chest, the right and left flank, a back after irradiation.

  • Total body irradiation (TBI) requires large radiation field and extended source to axis distance (SAD), therefore in needs large size treatment room and it needs compensators which components. Appropriate thickness beam spoiler should be used to raise skin dose. Treatment machine, photon energy, total dose, dose rate, dose fractionation, patient position, shield of normal tissues and organs were known to important parameters for TBI. TBI disturbes regular daily treatment schedule and significantly overloads Radiation on oncology departments and during the treatment session it requires accurate reproduction of radiation field and patient position. We were enable to TBI in small size treatment room and short SAD with parallel opposing lateral fields technique and achieved homogenious whole body dose distribution using pb compensators and controled lung dose by lung shield blocks. Drawing a patient shadow on the wall, we could shortened set up time and possible to accurate reproduction of radiation field and patient position.

  • The active treatment phase in preparation for bone marrow transplantation(BMT) of che- motherapy regimen and total body irradiation (TBI) containing regimen requires considerable teaching. There have been researches that are related to treatment onto BMT patients and to psychological change during BMT process. However, it was hard to find researches focused on learning needs of patients undergoing BMT. The purpose of this study was to provide the basic data for effective educational program about BMT by investigating the learning needs in patients undergoing BMT. The subjects consisted of 90 BMT patients have been admitted to the department of BMT at three university hospitals. Data were obtained from October 1998 to March 1999 and analyzed by SAS program for unpaired t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test. The results were as follows : 1. Learning needs related to demographic characteristics was identified as below. That of male was higher than that of female. That of under age 29, unmarried, religious and university graduated group was higher than that of opposite group but it didn't show significant difference. Learning needs of group of patients who were employed was significantly higher then that of unemployed patients. 2. According to types of diagnosis, learning needs of myelodysplastic syndrome(MDS) patients was the higher than that of others, but admission frequency was the least. Learning needs of unrelated matched BMT(UBMT) patients was higher than that of autologous BMT patients. However, it didn't show significant difference. With regard to learning needs according to process of BMT, learning needs of Pre- BMT period or Post-BMT period was significantly higher than that of BMT day. 3. Learning needs related to BMT was relatively high (total mean: 3.11 of 4.0). The order of the mean score of leaning needs was shown as follows : Restricted activities after discharge, Relapse symptom, Complications of BMT, Kinds of available drugs at home. Therefore the learning needs that is related to life after discharge and to relapse and complications after BMT was high. 4. Learning needs related to radiation therapy was high (total mean: 3.35 of 4.0). The learning needs in radiation therapy items was the Skin care of radiation therapy and Purpose of radiation therapy. 5. Learning needs related to graft versus host disease(GVHD) therapy was high (total mean: 3.55 of 4.0). The highest learning needs in GVHD therapy items was the Preventive method GVHD. less admission frequency and UBMT patients. It is necessary that education for BMT patients should be focused on life after discharge and on relapse and complications after BMT. Especially education for allogeneic BMT patients should be emphasized on GVHD. For all of these, it is necessary to develop systematic and concrete educational program.

  • Treatment conditions for the induced diploid gynogenesis, a maternal-exclusive form of artificial parthenogenetic reproduction, were optimized in bagrid catfish (Leiocassis ussuriensis, Siluriformes). Optimal amounts of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation for the genetic inactivation of spermatozoa in bagrid catfish and Pseudobagrus fulvidraco were proven to be ranged from 3,600 to 4,800 $ergs/mm^2$ based on the examination of viability of embryos and haploid incidence. Haploid embryos were restored to diploidy by preventing the extrusion of the second polar body using cold shock treatment. Thermal treatments (4 or $6^{\circ}C$ for 30, 40 or 50 min) were carried out 3, 5 or 7 min post insemination. Best scores for embryo viability (38.6% of total eggs taken) and incidence of normal diploidy (87.9% of hatched larvae) were observed at the embryo group treated at $4^{\circ}C$ for 40 min, 5 min after insemination. Restoration of gynogenetic diploidy was confirmed based on the absence of haploid syndrome, cell size and/or nucleolar organizing region (NOR) counts.
