Removal of nitrogen compound from waste water is essential and often accomplished by biological process. Deni-trification bacterium. Paracoccus denitrificans(KCTC 2350) is employed to estimate the ability and the characteristics of denitrification. In the immobilized biological reactor system, the measurement of absolute amount of active strain in the reactor is comparatively difficult or impossible. In this study, strain immobilized denitrification reactor was designed with the unwoven texture wrapped peeped hole plastic tube to calculated the absolute amount of active strain by comparing the activity of the immobilized reactor adn the free cell reactor. The reactor system was continuous stirred tank reactor and the rate of substrate consumption was assumed to be Michaelis-Menten equation. As a result, we found that the amount of immobilized active strain was the half of the total active strain in the reactor and the time required to reach in the equilibrium state in the immobilized reactor system was shorter than that of the free cell reactor system.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: The International Agency for Research on Cancer defined alcohol beverages and acetaldehyde derived from alcoholic beverages as a Group 1 carcinogen to humans. However, the association between alcohol consumption and gastric cancer risk has been controversial in Korean. We assessed the relationship between alcohol consumption and gastric cancer risk in Korea through a case-control study. SUBJECTS/METHODS: From 2 hospitals, a total of 316 cases with gastric cancer (208 men, 108 women) were selected and matched to 316 controls by sex and age (${\pm}5years$) during the same duration. The current status, frequency, and amount of alcohol consumption for a year three years ago were assessed by trained interviewers. RESULTS: Alcohol consumption status and frequency did not show any significant association with gastric cancer risk. However, high alcohol consumption (${\geq}20g/day$ for women or ${\geq}40g/day$ for men) significantly increased the risk of gastric cancer (odds ratio (OR) 1.73; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.05-2.85). Gastric cancer risk was strongly positively associated with alcohol consumption of ${\geq}20g/day$, especially in women (OR 5.62; 95% CI 1.32-23.81). CONCLUSION: The results from this study suggest that excessive alcohol consumption rather than the current status or frequency of alcohol consumption contributes to the increased risk of gastric cancer, especially in women.
The purpose of this study was to assess functioni fo urban greenspace to reduce atmospheric CO\sub 2\ concentration. The study quantified carbon storage in urban greenspace and carbon emission by fossil fuel consumptio in Chuncheon. The amount of carbon storage in vegetation by land use type was 0.02kg/$m^2$ for commercial land, 4.36kg/$m^2$ for natural land, and 0.54kg/$m^2$ for the other urban lands. In 1994, total amount of carbon emission by fossil fuel consumption was about 257,358 metric tons, and the per capita carbon emission was 1.4 metric ton. Total amount of carbon storage in vegetation was 42,942 metric tons, approximately 17% of the carbon emission. This study excluded quantification of carbon storage in soils. The role of urban greenspace to sequester atomspheric carbon might be much greater, if a soil greenspace to sequester atmospheric carbon might be much greater, if a soil greenspace to sequester atmospheric carbon might be much greater, if a soil carbon storage is included quantification of carbon storage is included. However, increasing coverage of trees and managing them for healthy growth would not be sufficient for avoiding adverse impacts by future climate change. The objective of the current study was to examine associations of whole grain consumption with socio-demographic (i.e.: sex, age, household income, education, marriage status) and certain eating behavior factors (i.e.: dish source, eating place, meal type) among a generally healthy Korean population. Using twenty-four hour recall data from the 2007-2008 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys, whole grain intake (g/day) was calculated for a total of 8,836 generally healthy Koreans aged 6 years and higher. The study subjects had very low whole grain intake. Specifically approximately 60% of the subjects reported no whole grain consumption on the survey day, and mean daily intake ranged from 8.0 g to 15.1 g in different gender and age groups. Living with a spouse was found to be a positive environment factor for whole grain consumption, especially among men. As household income levels increased, whole grain consumption status also improved. The proportion of non-consumer was lowest in a 6-19 year group, and mean intake amount was highest in middle-aged adults. Major dish sources for whole grain consumption included boiled rice with mixed grains, corn, boiled rice with brown rice, cereal products, and other types of boiled rice. It was found that whole grain consumption was highly affected by eating places rather than meal types. The best contributing eating place was home in each age and gender group. The study findings may be useful in planning nutrition education strategy and formulating dietary behavior guidelines for whole grain consumption improvement.
The carbon dioxide is brought from the energy consumption and regarded as a criteria material to estimate the Global Warming Potential. Building shares about 30% in national energy consumption and affects to environment as much as the energy consumption. But there is not enough data to forecast the amount of the carbon dioxide during the maintenance stage. Various factors are related with the energy consumption and carbon dioxide emission such as the physical area, the building exterior area, the maintenance type and location. Among these factors, the building carbon-dioxide emission can be estimated by the overall building characteristics such as the maintenance area, the number of household, the heating type, etc., The physical amount such as the thickness of the insulation and window infiltration could explained the limited scope and might not be use to estimate the total carbon-dioxide emission energy because the each value could not include or represent the overall building. In this paper, it provided the estimation model of the carbon-dioxide emission, explained by the overall building characteristics. These factors are shown as the maintenance area, no. of household, the heating type, the volume of the building, the ratio of the window to wall area etc., For providing the estimation model of th carbon-dioxide emission, it conducted the corelation analysis to filter the variables and suggested the estimation model with the power model and multiple regression model. Most of the model have a good statistics and fitted in the curve line.
The commercial buildings are consuming about 30% of total energy used in Korea. And a large amount of energy consumption in commercial buildings is consumed by HVAC(Heating, Ventilation, Air Conditioning) system. Therefore, if we can reduce the energy consumption in HVAC or air-conditioning system in commercial buildings, the overall energy consumption in Korea can be reduced. Currently, an electricity charge called Time of Use (TOU) is applied to typical commercial buildings. This paper proposes the novel energy management method where the temperature setting of air-conditioning system are adjusted to minimize the use of electrical energy while indoor comfort level is retained. The simulation test for a typical commercial building shows that the proposed method gives over 10% savings in electricity bills and electricity consumption compared to the conventional air-conditioning method.
In response to the rapid climate change, in order to save energy in the field of buildings, the country is planning not only zero energy buildings but also zero energy cities. In the Urban Development Project, the Energy Use Plan Report is prepared and submitted by predicting the amount of energy demand at the planning stage. However, due to the activation of zero-energy buildings and the increase in the supply of new and renewable energy facilities, the energy consumption behavior of buildings in the city is changing from the previous ones. In this study, to estimate urban energy demand of Zero Energy City, building energy demand forecasts based on "Passive plans for use of energy based primary energy consumption", "Actual building energy usage data from Korea Appraisal Board" and "data from Certification of Building Energy Efficiency Rating" as well as demand forecast according to existing "Consultation about Energy Use Plan Code" were calculated and then applied to Multifunctional Administrative City 5-1 zone to compare urban total energy demand forecasts.
● The current world is suffering abnormal climate caused by global warming. The main cause of global warming is greenhouse gas such as carbon dioxide. The carbon labeling system and carbon traceability system being pushed ahead in the agricultural sector is the policy for responding to climate change to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. To make this policy more effective and enhanced, the amount of carbon emissions should be calculated based on the kind of crops or the various businesses in the agricultural sector. Therefore, in order to estimate the accurate amount of carbon emissions, it is necessary to establish carbon dioxide emission intensity of various agricultural materials added onto the agriculture, and to calculate the amount of carbon dioxide emission for each crop according to agricultural production. The purpose of this study is to establish the amount of emission, emission per agricultural materials, of agricultural materials being added for crop production as a basic step, and emission intensity which can be used in the future market in order to estimate accurate amount of carbon emission in all the policies being promoted in the agricultural sector. Therefore, in this study, in order to build LCI D/B about organic fertilizers among many organic materials added onto the organic agriculture sector, one leading company in organic fertilizer production was selected and LCA was conducted for this leading company. We had to build the intensity and integrated average concept of intensity upon the two cases once production farmers for their own consumption and farms besides organic fertilizer company were categorized even if it's little amount. But in this study, individually produced organic fertilizers were excluded. Calculated results are following. Carbon emission of mixed expeller cake fertilizer in organic fertilizer was 1,106,966.89kg-$CO^2$ and emission intensity was 0.01606kg-$CO^2$, respectively. Total emission of mixed organic fertilizers was 241,523.2kg-$CO^2$ and emission intensity was 0.01705kg-$CO^2$. And total emission of organic compound fertilizers was 94,592.66kg-$CO^2$ and emission intensity was 0.01769kg-$CO^2$, respectively.
The purpose of this study was to study the relationship between the prevalence of constipation and beverage intake. Research data were collected from first and second grade female students at Hyehwa High School in Seoul by means of questionnaires. A total of 190 questionnaires were analyzed using the SPSS/WIN program. The results are summarized as follows: The average body mass index (BMI) was 20.7. Of the students, 38.4% had a BMI of less than 20(underweight), and 15.8% had a BMI of over 23 (overweight). However, 84.7% of the students wanted to lose weight. To estimate the prevalence of constipation, five factors were used: frequency and regularity of defecation, time spent defecating, defecation difficulty, and feeling of residue after defecation. The percentage of the students who emptied their bowels every day was 22.1%. About 2/5 of the students (42.1%) had irregular defecation, and 15.2% spent more than 10 minutes in the rest room when defecating. The students who did not have difficulty defecating and those who did not have feelings of residue after defecating were only 24.7% and 28.9%, respectively. The amount of beverage intake per day was 1,062$m\ell$ 674$m\ell$ of water, 128$m\ell$ of milk, 88$m\ell$ of soft drinks, and 53$m\ell$ of fruit juice. The amount of beverage intake before breakfast, during breakfast, before lunch and during lunch was about 100 $m\ell$, each; before dinner, during dinner, and after dinner it was about 200$m\ell$, each. The amount of beverage intake during the weekend was 120$m\ell$ greater than on weekdays. Students who drank more beverages, especially water, before breakfast, showed a higher defecation frequency, more regular defecation, spent less time defecating, had less difficulty defecating, and had less feeling of residue after defecation, so that they have a better defecation pattern. Based on these results, increasing the amount of beverage consumption, especially of water, and drinking greater quantities of beverage before breakfast are ways to reduce constipation.
This study was targeted at 91 students living in a boys' high school dormitory and centered on the how the consumption of fish and vegetables changed after students were educated according to nutrition education and cooking methods. First of all, the primary investigation of the leftover amount in the beginning of the semester was conducted five times for five days from March 21st to 25th, 2011. The secondary investigation was conducted with the same diet for five days as well from December 1st to 7th. Then the tertiary investigation was performed eight times from December 12th to 30th, after cooking method changes. There was a difference of the total leftover food amount between the first grade and the second grade during the beginning of the semester, but after the nutrition education there was no difference of the leftover food amount. In particular, leavings of vegetables and fish both significantly decreased in the first grade, after the nutrition education to encourage students to eat fish and vegetables. However, there was no difference in the leftover food amount of the second-grade students who received the education before, between the beginning and the end of the semester. When cooking fish the way students preferred, they had fried fish fillets the most, followed by roasted fish fillets, roasted bone-in fish, and braised fish. There were significant differences. Regarding vegetable, students ate salad the most, followed by Geotjeori and blanch, and there were significant differences.
