Connection of adjacent buildings with stiff links is an efficient approach for seismic pounding mitigation. However, use of highly rigid links might alter the torsional response in asymmetric plans and although this was mentioned in the literature, no quantitative study has been done before to investigate the condition numerically. In this paper, the effect of rigid coupling on the elastic lateral-torsional response of two adjacent one-story column-type buildings has been studied by comparison to uncoupled structures. Three cases are considered, including two similar asymmetric structures, two adjacent asymmetric structures with different dynamic properties and a symmetric system adjacent to an adjacent asymmetric one. After an acceptable validation against the actual earthquake, the traditional random vibration method has been utilized for dynamic analysis under Ideal white noise input. Results demonstrate that rigid coupling may increase or decrease the rotational response, depending on eccentricities, torsional-to-lateral stiffness ratios and relative uncoupled lateral stiffness of adjacent buildings. Results are also discussed for the case of using identical cross section for all columns supporting eachplan. In contrast to symmetric systems, base shear increase in the stiffer building may be avoided when the buildings lateral stiffness ratio is less than 2. However, the eccentricity increases the rotation of the plans for high rotational stiffness of the buildings.
Reinforced concrete vertical silos are universal structures that store large amounts of granular materials. Due to the asymmetric structure, heavy load, uneven storage material distribution, and the difference between the storage volume and the storage material bulk density, the corresponding earthquake is very complicated. Some scholars have proposed the calculation method of horizontal forces on reinforced concrete vertical silos under the action of earthquakes. Without considering the effect of torsional effect, this article aims to reveal the expansion factor of the silo group considering the torsional effect through experiments. Through two-way seismic simulation shaking table tests on reinforced concrete column-supported group silo structures, the basic dynamic characteristics of the structure under earthquake are obtained. Taking into account the torsional response, the structure has three types of storage: empty, half and full. A comprehensive analysis of the internal force conditions under the material conditions shows that: the different positions of the group bin model are different, the side bin displacement produces a displacement difference, and a torsional effect occurs; as the mass of the material increases, the structure's natural vibration frequency decreases and the damping ratio Increase; it shows that the storage material plays a role in reducing energy consumption of the model structure, and the contribution value is related to the stiffness difference in different directions of the model itself, providing data reference for other researchers; analyzing and calculating the model stiffness and calculating the internal force of the earthquake. As the horizontal side shift increases in the later period, the torsional effect of the group silo increases, and the shear force at the bottom of the column increases. It is recommended to consider the effect of the torsional effect, and the increase factor of the torsional effect is about 1.15. It can provide a reference for the structural safety design of column-supported silos.
To reduce the structural weight, thin-walled circular composite tube has been used as a main spar of high altitude-long endurance unmanned air vehicle(HALE UAV). Predicting the torsional response of stiffened circular spar is complex due to the inhomogeneous nature of section properties, which are dependent on fiber architecture and constituent material properties. The stiffener were placed in the top and bottom sectors of a tube to increase the torsional capabilities such as the rigidity and buckling strength. Numerical simulations were performed to estimate the effect of the stiffener on the torsional capacities. A static experimental test was performed on a stiffened tube, and the test results were compared with a numerical model. The numerical models showed good correlation and demonstrated the ability to predict the torsional capacity. Results presented herein will exhibit the effectiveness of stiffener on torsional strength and stiffness.
In this paper, a dynamic model for the rotor shaft-coupling-blade system is developed. The blades are attached to a disk and driven by an electric motor shaft which is flexible in torsion. We assumed that the shaft torsional flexibility is lumped in the flexible coupling which is usually adopted in rotor systems. The Lagrangian approach with the small deformation theory for both blade-bending and shaft-torsional deformations is employed for developing the equation of the motion. The assumed modes method is used for estimating the blade transverse deflection. The numerical results highlight the effects of both structural damping of the system and the torsional stiffness of the flexible coupling to the dynamic response of the blade. The results showed strong coupling between the blade bending and shaft torsional vibrations in the form of inertial nonlinearif, stiffness hardening and softening.

The predominant type of buckling that I-steel concrete composite beams experience in the negative moment area is distortional buckling. The key factors that affect distortional buckling are the torsional and lateral restraints by the bottom flange. This study thoroughly investigates the equivalent lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange of an I-steel concrete composite beam under negative moments. The results show a coupling effect between the applied forces and the lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange. A formula is proposed to calculate the critical buckling stress of the I-steel concrete composite beams under negative moments by considering the lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange. The proposed method is shown to better predict the critical bending moment of the I-steel composite beams. This article introduces an improved method to calculate the elastic foundation beams, which takes into account the lateral and torsional restraint stiffnesses of the bottom flange and considers the coupling effect between them. The results show a close match in results from the calculation method proposed in this paper and the ANSYS finite element method, which validates the proposed calculation method. The proposed calculation method provides a theoretical basis for further research on distortional buckling and the ultimate resistance of I-steel concrete composite beams under a variable axial force.
Structural dynamic characteristics and aeroelastic stability of a small-scale bearingless rotor system have been investigated. A flexbeam is one of the most important component of bearingless hub system. It must have sufficient torsional flexibility as well as baseline stiffness in order to produce feathering motion. In the present paper, a cross-shaped composite flexbeam has been proposed for a guarantee of torsional flexibility and flapwise and lagwise bending stiffness. One dimensional elastic beam model was used for the construction of a structural model. Equivalent isotropic sectional stiffness was used in the blade model, and the flexbeam was regarded as anisotropic; which has ten independent stiffness quantities. CAMRAD II has been used for the analysis of structural dynamic characteristics of the bearingless rotor system. Rotational natural frequencies and aeroelastic stability at hovering have been investigated. Analysis result shows that the cross-shaped flexbeam has the rotational natural frequency tuning capacity.
Bernoulli-Euler beam theory is used to develop an exact dynamic stiffness matrix for the flexural-torsional coupled motion of a three-dimensional, axially loaded, thin-walled beam of doubly asymmetric cross-section. This is achieved through solution of the differential equations governing the motion of the beam including warping stiffness. The uniform distribution of mass in the member is also accounted for exactly, thus necessitating the solution of a transcendental eigenvalue problem. This is accomplished using the Wittrick-Williams algorithm. Finally, examples are given to confirm the accuracy of the theory presented, together with an assessment of the effects of axial load and loading eccentricity.
The evaluation of torsional effects on multistory buildings remains an open issue, despite considerable research efforts and numerous publications. In this study, a large number of multiple test structures are considered with normally distributed topological attributes, in order to quantify the statistically derived relationships between the torsional criteria and response parameters. The linear regression analysis results, depict that the center of twist and the ratio of torsion (ROT) index proved numerically to be the most reliable criteria for the prediction of the modal rotation and displacements, however the residuals distribution and R-squared derived for the ductility demands prediction, was not constant and low respectively. Thus, the assessment of the torsional parameters' contribution to the nonlinear structural response was investigated using artificial neural networks. Utilizing the connection weights approach, the Center of Strength, Torsional Stiffness and the Base Shear Torque curves were found to exhibit the highest impact numerically, while all the other torsional indices' contribution was investigated and quantified.
AIM: The purpose of this study was to evaluate and compare the torsional fracture resistances, cyclic fatigue resistance, and bending stiffness of two nickel-titanium (NiTi) rotary instruments made of different heat-treated alloy: Aurum Blue (heat-treated) and Aurum Pro (conventional). Methods: Forty-five Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro NiTi files were selected for the three mechanical tests (n=15). For the torsional resistance test, 3 mm file tip was fixed and the shaft was driven clockwise at 2 rpm until fracture occurred by using a customized device. Cyclic fatigue resistance was evaluated by rotating instruments in artificial canal with dynamic mode. Bending stiffness was tested by observation of the bending moment on attaining a 45° bend. The results were analyzed by student-t tests at a significance level of 95%. The fractured surface of each groups were examined under a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Results: Aurum Blue showed significantly higher toughness, ultimate strength, distortion angle, and number of cycles to failure than those of Aurum Pro (p < 0.05). However, Aurum Blue and Aurum Pro did not differ significantly in terms of bending stiffness. SEM showed typical topographic appearances of the cyclic fatigue and torsional fracture. Conclusions: Under the limitations of this study, heat-treated instruments showed higher flexibility and fracture resistances than conventional NiTi instruments.
