The recently introduced index Ratio Of Torsion (ROT) quantifies the base shear amplification due to torsional effects on shear cantilever types of building structures. In this work, a theoretical proof based on the theory of elasticity is provided, depicting that the ratio of torsion (ROT) is independent of the forces acting on the structure, although its definition stems from the shear forces. This is a particular attribute of other design and evaluation criteria against torsion such as center of rigidity and center of strength. In the case of ROT, this evidence could be considered as inconsistent, as ROT is a function solely of the forces acting on structural members, nevertheless it is proven to be independent of them. As ROT is the amplification of the shear forces due to in-plan irregularities, this work depicts that this increase of internal shear forces rely only on the structural topology. Moreover, a numerical verification of this theoretical finding was accomplished, using linear statistics interpretation and nonlinear neural networks simulation for an adequate database of structures.
In the recent times, dimensions of heavy load carrying vehicle have changed significantly incorporating structural flexibility in vehicle body. The present paper outlines a procedure for the estimation of bridge response statistics considering structural bending modes of the vehicle. Bridge deck roughness has been considered to be non homogeneous random process in space. Influence of pre cambering of bridge surface and settlement of approach slab on the dynamic behavior of the bridge has been studied. A parametric study considering vehicle axle spacing, mass, speed, vehicle flexibility, deck unevenness and eccentricity of vehicle path have been conducted. Dynamic amplification factor (DAF) of the bridge response has been obtained for several of combination of bridge-vehicle parameters. The present study reveals that flexible modes of vehicle can reduce dynamic response of the bridge to the extent of 30-37% of that caused by rigid vehicle model. However, sudden change in the bridge surface profile leads to significant amount of increment in the bridge dynamic response even if flexible bending modes remain active. The eccentricity of vehicle path and flexural/torsional rigidity ratios plays a significant role in dynamic amplification of bridge response.
Due to earthquakes, many structures suffered extensive damages that were attributed to the torsional effect caused by mass, stiffness or strength eccentricity. Due to this type of asymmetry torsional moments are generated that are imposed by means of additional shear forces developed at the vertical resisting structural elements of the buildings. Although the torsional effect on the response of reinforced concrete buildings was the subject of extensive research over the last decades, a quantitative index measuring the amplification of the shear forces developed at the vertical resisting elements due to lateral-torsional coupling valid for both elastic and elastoplastic response states is still missing. In this study a reliable index capable of assessing the torsional effect is proposed. The performance of the proposed index is evaluated and its correlation with structural response quantities like displacements, interstorey drift, base torque, shear forces and upper diaphragm's rotation is presented. Torsionally stiff, mass eccentric single-story and multistory structures, subjected to bidirectional excitation, are considered and nonlinear dynamic analyses are performed using natural records selected for three hazard levels. It was found that the proposed index provides reliable prediction of the magnitude of torsional effect for all test examples considered.
In general, crankshafts which are used in internal combustion reciprocating engines are subjects to high torsional vibration. Therefore, a damper is often used to minimize the torsional vibration in reciprocating engines. In this paper, in order to investigate damping performance of viscous damper, the real effective viscosity and complex damping coefficient of silicone oil, and the effective inertia moment of inertia ring are calculated considering the relative motion between damper casing and inertia ring. Based on these results multi-cylinder shaft is modeled into equivalent 2-degree of freedom system and optimum condition is estimated by calculating the amplification factor of viscous damper. Also the test damper was manufactured according to the result of theoretical investigation, the performance and durability was ascertained through experimental examination.
The single-column pier girder bridge, due to its low engineering cost, small footprint, and aesthetic appearance, is extensively employed in urban viaducts and interchange ramps. However, its structural design makes it susceptible to eccentric loads, flexural-torsional coupling effects, and centrifugal forces, among others. To evaluate its anti-overturning performance reasonably, it is crucial to determine the reaction force of the support for the single-column pier girder bridge. However, due to the interaction between vehicle and bridge and the complexity of vibration modes, it poses a significant challenge to analyze the theory or finite element method of single-column pier girder bridges. The unit load bearing reaction coefficient method is proposed in this study to facilitate the static analysis. Numerous parameter analyses have been conducted to account for the dynamic amplification effect. The results of these analyses reveal that the dynamic amplification factor is independent of road surface roughness but is influenced by factors such as the position of the support. Based on parameter analysis, the formula of the dynamic amplification factor is derived by fitting.
In this study, the seismic performance of RC school buildings which were not designed according to earthquake-resistance design code were evaluated by using response spectrum and push-over analyses. The torsional amplification effect due to plan irregularity is considered and then the efficiency of seismic retrofitting methods such as RC shear wall, steel frame, RC frame and PC wing wall was investigated. The analysis result indicate that the inter-story drift concentrated in the first floor and most plastic hinge forms at the column of the first story. Among the retrofitting methods, the PC wing wall has the highest seismic performance in strength and story drift aspect. Especially, it can make building ductile behavior due to the concentrated inter-story drift at the first column hinge is distributed overall stories. The axial force, shear force and moment magnitude of existing elements significantly decreased after retrofitting. However, the axial and shear force of the elements connected to the additional retrofitting elements increased, and especially the boundary columns at the end of the retrofitting shear wall should be reinforced for assuring the enhancement of seismic performance.
For the ground resrxmse analysis, both in-situ and laboratory testing techniques such as downhole, SASW, resonant column and torsional shear tests were perlormed for Hong-Seong area. The grOlmd upper 30m is classified as SD since it has an average shear wave velocity as 209m/s. The response specLrums obtained by site-specific analyses generally satisfied the seismic code, but near the resonance period the motion was evaluated to be higher than the code.
This paper investigates the seismic response of lightweight acceleration-sensitive non-structural components (NSCs) mounted on irregular reinforced concrete (RC) primary structures (P-structures) using non-linear dynamic finite element (FE) analysis. The aim of this paper is to study the influence of NSC to P-structure vibration period ratio, peak ground acceleration, NSC to P-structure height ratio, and P-structure torsional behaviour on the seismic response of the NSCs. Representative constitutive models were used to simulate the behaviour of the RC P-structures. The NSCs were modelled as vertical cantilevers fixed at their bases with masses on the free ends and varying lengths so as to match the frequencies of the P-structures. Full dynamic interaction is considered between the NSCs and P-structures. A set of 21 natural and artificial earthquake records were used to evaluate the seismic response of the NSCs. The numerical results indicate that the behaviour of the NSCs is significantly influenced by the investigated parameters. Comparison between the FE results and Eurocode (EC8) predictions suggests that EC8 underestimates the response of NSCs mounted on the flexible sides of irregular RC P-structures when the fundamental periods and heights of the NSCs match those of the P-structures. The perceived cause of this discrepancy is that EC8 does not take into account the amplification in the dynamic response of NSCs induced by the torsional behaviour of RC P-structures.
In this paper, the effects of mass eccentricity of superstructure as well as stiffness eccentricity of isolators on the amplification of seismic responses of base-isolated structures are investigated by using mathematical near-fault pulse models. Superstructures with 3, 6 and 9 stories and aspect ratios equal to 1, 2 and 3 are mounted on a reasonable variety of Triple Concave Friction Pendulum (TCFP) bearings considering different period and damping ratio. Three-dimensional linear superstructure mounted on nonlinear isolators are subjected to simplified pulses including fling step and forward directivity while various pulse period ($T_p$) and Peak Ground Velocity (PGV) amounts as two crucial parameters of these pulses are scrutinized. Maximum isolator displacement and base shear as well as peak superstructure acceleration and drift are selected as the main engineering demand parameters. The results indicate that the torsional intensification of different demand parameters caused by superstructure mass eccentricity is more significant than isolator stiffness eccentricity. The torsion due to mass eccentricity has intensified the base shear of asymmetric 6-story model 2.55 times comparing to symmetric one. In similar circumstances, the isolator displacement and roof acceleration are increased 49 and 116 percent respectively in the presence of mass eccentricity. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that torsional effects of mass eccentricity can force the drift to reach the allowable limit of ASCE 7 standard in the presence of forward directivity pulses.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the dynamic behavior of highway bridge due to moving vehicle load, considering the effect of laminated rubber bearing. Dynamic behaviors of bridge considering the effect of bearings are studied with 3-dimensional bridge and vehicle models. To analyze the effect of bearings on the dynamic behaviors of superstructures of bridges, laminated rubber bearing is modeled as 3-dimensional frame element with equivalent stiffness and damping, and the models are included in the bridge analysis model. The results from the analytical models with laminated rubber bearing show a significant effects on dynamic responses and more complex vibration characteristics compared with the results from the bridge with pot bearings. Generally, larger dynamic amplification factors are obtained in the case of laminated rubber bearing, which is mainly due to the smaller torsional stiffness of the bridge with laminated rubber bearing. It can be recommended that were careful consideration on the vibration of bridges and dynamic load allowance in design are needed when adopting laminated rubber bearing.
