Correlation Between Knee Muscle Strength and Maximal Cycling Speed Measured Using 3D Depth Camera in Virtual Reality Environment

  • Background: Virtual reality (VR) programs based on motion capture camera are the most convenient and cost-effective approaches for remote rehabilitation. Assessment of physical function is critical for providing optimal VR rehabilitation training; however, direct muscle strength measurement using camera-based kinematic data is impracticable. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a method to indirectly estimate the muscle strength of users from the value obtained using a motion capture camera. Objects: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pedaling speed converted using the VR engine from the captured foot position data in the VR environment can be used as an indirect way to evaluate knee muscle strength, and to investigate the validity and reliability of a camera-based VR program. Methods: Thirty healthy adults were included in this study. Each subject performed a 15-second maximum pedaling test in the VR and built-in speedometer modes. In the VR speedometer mode, a motion capture camera was used to detect the position of the ankle joints and automatically calculate the pedaling speed. An isokinetic dynamometer was used to assess the isometric and isokinetic peak torques of knee flexion and extension. Results: The pedaling speeds in VR and built-in speedometer modes revealed a significantly high positive correlation (r = 0.922). In addition, the intra-rater reliability of the pedaling speed in the VR speedometer mode was good (ICC [intraclass correlation coefficient] = 0.685). The results of the Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant moderate positive correlation between the pedaling speed of the VR speedometer and the peak torque of knee isokinetic flexion (r = 0.639) and extension (r = 0.598). Conclusion: This study suggests the potential benefits of measuring the maximum pedaling speed using 3D depth camera in a VR environment as an indirect assessment of muscle strength. However, technological improvements must be followed to obtain more accurate estimation of muscle strength from the VR cycling test.

Full-scale TBM excavation tests for rock-like materials with different uniaxial compressive strength

  • Penetration rate (PR) and penetration depth (Pe) are crucial parameters for estimating the cost and time required in tunnel construction using tunnel boring machines (TBMs). This study focuses on investigating the impact of rock strength on PR and Pe through full-scale experiments. By conducting controlled tests on rock-like specimens, the study aims to understand the contributions of various ground parameters and machine-operating conditions to TBM excavation performance. An earth pressure balanced (EPB) TBM with a sectional diameter of 3.54 m was utilized in the experiments. The TBM excavated rocklike specimens with varying uniaxial compressive strength (UCS), while the thrust and cutterhead rotational speed were controlled. The results highlight the significance of the interplay between thrust, cutterhead speed, and rock strength (UCS) in determining Pe. In high UCS conditions exceeding 70 MPa, thrust plays a vital role in enhancing Pe as hard rock requires a greater thrust force for excavation. Conversely, in medium-to-low UCS conditions less than 50 MPa, thrust has a weak relationship with Pe, and Pe becomes directly proportional to the cutterhead rotational speed. Furthermore, a strong correlation was observed between Pe and cutterhead torque with a determination coefficient of 0.84. Based on these findings, a predictive model for Pe is proposed, incorporating thrust, TBM diameter, number of disc cutters, and UCS. This model offers a practical tool for estimating Pe in different excavation scenarios. The study presents unprecedented full-scale TBM excavation results, with well-controlled experiments, shedding light on the interplay between rock strength, TBM operational variables, and excavation performance. These insights are valuable for optimizing TBM excavation in grounds with varying strengths and operational conditions.

A Study on the Characteristics of High-Tension Bolted Joints' Behavior due to Surface Condition (표면상태에 따른 고장력볼트 마찰이음부의 거동특성에 관한 연구)

  • In this study, the static and the fatigue tests were performed with high tension bolted joints, of which the surfaces were spread with inorganic zinc-primer after shot-blast, and milling surface, and steel-natural surface, difference of friction surface condition were examined by comparing the esults of tests. From the result of synthetical investigation of this study. it is proper that using the torque management method in order to introduce design axial force to blots, and the provision of specifications that initial axial forces must be 110% of design axial forces is proper. Decreasing ratio of axial forces to initial force is proportional to common lorgarithms of time progress, it converge constant value after 20 hours, and decreasing ratio is little related to the roughness of friction surface. Sliding coefficient of milling, spreading inorganic zinc-primer, just producting is great in order and sliding forces are dependent on the applied axial forces, but if the applied axial forces are great, sliding coefficient become small by a loss of roughness. So it is confirmed that relation between the applied axial forces and the sliding forces are not proportional linearly. From the result of estimation on fatigue strength, all specimens satisfy the specifications with B-grade and milling surface is lower than the others about 14% in fatigue strength because in milling surface lose the function of friction-types joints at lower number of cycles. From the result of eximination for the distribution area of compressive force, friction area near to inside bolt is wider in the direction of stress than near to outside. It is guessed that this situation occurs because outside bolts firstly change from the friction connection to the bearing connection.

Performance Assessment of Two Horizontal Shroud Tidal Current Energy Converter using Hydraulic Experiment (수리실험을 통한 수평 2열 쉬라우드 조류에너지 변환장치 성능평가)

  • In this study, the two horizontal shroud tidal current energy converter, which can generate power even under low flow speed conditions, was developed. In order to determine the shape of the shroud system, a three-dimensional numerical simulation test was conducted, and a 1/6 scale down model was made to perform a hydraulic model experiment. The hydraulic model experiment was performed under four flow conditions, and the flow speed, torque, and RPM were measured for each experimental case. As a result of the numerical simulation test, it was found that the flow speeds passing through the nozzle were increased by about 2~3 times in the cylinder, and when the extension ratio was 2:1, the highest flow speed was shown. In addition, it was found that the flow speeds increased 2.8 times when the diameter ratio between the nozzle and the cylinder was 1.5:1. Meanwhile, as a result of the hydraulic model experiment, it was found that when the tip speed ratio was between 1.75 and 2, the power coefficient was 0.32 to 0.34.

Three-dimensional finite element analysis according to the insertion depth of an immediately loaded implant in the anterior maxilla (상악 전치부 즉시하중 임플란트의 식립 깊이에 따른 삼차원 유한요소 분석)

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the insertion depth of an immediately loaded implant on the stress distribution of the surrounding bone and the micromovement of the implant using the three-dimensional finite element analysis. Materials and methods: A total of five bone models were constructed such that the implant platform was positioned at the levels of 0.00 mm, 0.25 mm, 0.50 mm, 0.75 mm, and 1.00 mm depth from the crest of the cortical bone. A frictional coefficient of 0.3 and the insertion torque of 35 Ncm were simulated on the interface between the implant and surrounding bone. A static load of 178 N was applied to the provisional prosthesis with a vertical load in the axial direction and an oblique load at $30^{\circ}$ with respect to the central axis of the implant, then a finite element analysis was performed. Results: The implant insertion depth significantly affected the stress distribution on the surrounding bone. The largest micromovement value of the implant was $39.34{\mu}m$. The oblique load contributed significantly to the stress distribution and micromovement in comparison to the vertical load. Conclusion: Increasing the implant insertion depth was advantageous in dispersing the concentrated stress in the cortical bone and did not significantly affect the micromovement associated with early osseointegration failure.

  • To numerically simulate the advance of EPB TBM, various type of numerical analysis methods have been adopted including discrete element method (DEM), finite element method (FEM), and finite difference method (FDM). In this paper, an EPB TBM driving model was proposed by using coupled DEM-FDM. In the numerical model, DEM was applied in the TBM excavation area, and contact properties of particles were calibrated by a series of triaxial tests. Since the ground around the excavation area was coupled with FDM, the horizontal stress considering the coefficient of earth pressure at rest could be applied. Also, the number of required particles was reduced and the efficiency of the analysis was increased. The proposed model can control the advance rate and rotational speed of the cutter head and screw conveyor, and derive the torque, thrust force, chamber pressure, and discharging during TBM tunnelling.

A Development of Torsional Analysis Model and Parametric Study for PSC Box Girder Bridge with Corrugated Steel Web (복부 파형강판을 사용한 PSC 복합 교량의 비틀림 해석모델의 제안 및 변수해석)

  • The Prestressed Concrete (hereinafter PSC) box girder bridges with corrugated steel webs have been drawing an attention as a new structure type of PSC bridge fully utilizing the feature of concrete and steel. However, the previous study focused on the shear buckling of the corrugated steel web and development of connection between concrete flange and steel web. Therefore, it needs to perform a study on the torsional behavior and develop the rational torsional analysis model for PSC box girder with corrugated steel web. In this study, torsional analysis model is developed using Rausch's equation based on space truss model, equilibrium equation considering softening effect of reinforced concrete element and compatibility equation. Validation studies are performed on developed model through the comparison with the experimental results of loading test for PSC box girder with corrugated steel webs. Parametric studies are also performed to investigate the effect of prestressing force and concrete strength in torsional behavior of PSC box girder with corrugated steel web. The modified correction factor is also derived for the torsional coefficient of PSC box girder with corrugated steel web through the parametric study using the proposed anlaytical model.

Effect of forearm length applied on empirical models of maximum endurance time during isometric elbow flexion (등척성 팔굽 굽힘시 최대근지구력시간의 실증적 모델에 적용한 전완길이의 영향)

  • During isometric elbow flexion, forearm length should be an important factor to determine not only joint torque but also maximum endurance time (MET), when the forearm is perpendicular to the direction of the force. The purpose of this paper is to examine the effect of forearm length as an additional factor on empirical models of MET such as an exponential model and a power model during isometric elbow flexion. Thirty volunteers participated in our experiment to measure factor variables such as circumferences and lengths of their upper and lower arms. Their METs were measured according to the percent of maximum voluntary contraction intensity (%MVC). For the multiple linear regression model of ln(MET) using these measurements, significant variables could be observed in %MVC and forearm lengths (P<0.05). The empirical models were assessed by these models using forearm length as the additional factor. Mean absolute deviations (MAD) between the measured METs amd the two empirical models were about 19.4 [s], but MAD using models applied forearm lengths were reduced to about 16.2 [s]. The correlation coefficients and intraclass correlation coefficients were about 0.87, but those applied forearm lengths were increased to about 0.91. These results demonstrated that forearm length was a significant additional factor to the empirical model.
