The local topography has a significant effect on the characteristics of seismic ground motion. This paper investigates the influence of topographic effects on the seismic response of a train-bridge system. A 3-D finite element model with local absorbing boundary conditions is established for the local site. The time histories of seismic ground motion are converted into equivalent loads on the artificial boundary, to obtain the seismic input at the bridge supports. The analysis of the train-bridge system subjected to multi-support seismic excitations is performed, by applying the displacement time histories of the seismic ground motion to the bridge supports. In a case study considering a bridge with a span of 466 m crossing a valley, the seismic response of the train-bridge system is analyzed. The results show that the local topography and the incident angle of seismic waves have a significant effect on the seismic response of the train-bridge system. Leaving these effects out of consideration may lead to unsafe analysis results.
Numerical experiments using the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model were done to identify the role of the mountain ranges in the northern part of the Peninsula (referred as "the northern mountain complex"), in the occurrence of two heavy snowfall events over the Yeongdong region on 7-8 December 2002 and 20-21 January 2008. To this end, control simulations with the topography of the northern mountain complex and other simulations without the topography of the mountain complex were performed. It was revealed that the amount of snowfall over the Yeongdong region from the control simulation much more exceeded that of the simulation without the topography of the mountain complex. This increase of the snowfall amount over the Yeongdong region can be explained as follows: As the upstream flow approached the northern mountain complex, it deflected around the northern mountain complex due to the blocking effect of the mountains with a low Froude number less than ~0.16. This lead to the strengthening of northeasterly over the East Sea and over the Yeongdong region. The strong northeasterly is accompanied with much more snowfall over the Yeongdong region by intensifying air-mass modification over the sea and the orographic effect of the Taeback mountains. Thus, it was concluded that the topography of the northern mountain complex is one of the main factors in determining the distribution and amount of precipitation in the Yeongdong region when there is an expansion of the Siberian High toward the East Sea.

The present study evaluated the blocking effect of natural and artificial topography on sunshine duration in the southern coastal area of Haui-do. The geospatial data for the target area was constructed by geographic information system(GIS) data. Three-dimensional modeling based on solar azimuth and altitude angles was conducted for the assessment of sunshine environment. The sunshine area was evaluated over 80~90% of the target area in the daytime, especially in summer. The blocking effect of mountainous terrain on sunshine duration was presented at the northern residential area in the late afternoon. There was also the effect of artificial topography by construction of fill-up bank on sunshine environment at the southern residential area early in the morning and the south-western part of salt field in the late afternoon.
Effects of buildings and topography on observation environment of surface wind in central regions of urban areas are investigated using a computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model. In order to reflect the characteristics of buildings and topography in urban areas, geographic information system (GIS) data are used to construct surface boundary input data. For each observation station, 16 cases with different inflow directions are considered to evaluate effects of buildings and topography on wind speed and direction around the observation station. The results show that flow patterns are very complicated due to the buildings and topography. The simulated wind speed and direction at the location of each observation station are compared with those of inflow. As a whole, wind speed at observation stations decreases due to the drag effect of buildings. The decrease rate of wind speed is strongly related with total volume of buildings which are located in the upwind direction. It is concluded that the CFD model is a very useful tool to evaluate location of observation station suitability. And it is expected to help produce wind observation data that represent local scale excluding the effects of buildings and topography in urban areas.
With the effect that the Yipsu-ryong(入首龍) of Ju-san(主山) influenced on the layout in the view of geomantic topography(形勢), how Ahn-san(案山) affected the layout plan of the Korean academics of classical learning(書院) is researched. And how the "Jirisinbeob(地理新法)" which had been written by Ho-sun-sin(胡舜申) was applied to the Korean academics of classical learning in the view of Li and Ch'i(理氣) is studied. In Fengshui, the method to pick out a site and to confirm the direction for building construction was divided into two, one of them was 'the geomantic topography', which included 'Ju-san following type(主山順應形)', 'Ahn-san stressing type(案山重視形)' and 'Ju-san & Ahn-san complex type(主 案山混合形)'. And the other is the 'Rule of direction(向法)'. The Korean academics of classical learning was applied by the geomantic topography of Fengshui for its layout and direction, regardless of political, regional and period factors. So when the Sa-rim(士林) needed to set direction for the Korean academics of classical learning, the ground that was appropriate to the geomantic topography of Fengshui was selected. Therefore, the Sa-rim who was abused in Neo-Confucianism had a mind of stressing geomantic topography of Fengshui and they applied it positively for building construction.
This study aims to understand the patterns of spatial distribution of snowfall by Siberian High in the Honam region in Korea. In the Honam region, Siberian High induces snowfall dominantly. There is a huge amount of snowfall in the westward of the Noryung mountain ranges to the Wert coast in the Honam region affected by northwesterly wind directly from the Siberian High. The westward of the Noryung mountain ranges such as a heavy snowfall region has a various pattern of distribution of snowfall due to topography. The coast region has a large amount of snowfall by sea effect. And, snowfall amount is decreased from the coast to the inland plain. However, in front of mountain, snowfall is increase by reason of a forced ascending air to the mountain. In general the region where frequently appear a cumuliform cloud has a large amount of snowfall. A cumuliform cloud is frequent in the mountainous region in inland, the coast, and the inland plain in order Snowfall is intense in the coast and the mountainous region, and weak in the inland plain. In the mountainous region, a cumuliform cloud induced tv a forced ascending air by reason of topography generates snowfall mostly. This fact is the main difference with snowfall in the mountainous region and the coast region. In the result, in the Honam region, snowfall distribution and snowfall pattern are various, according to geographical climate factor such as sea and topography. The heavy snowfall region in the Honam region is divided into the coast region affected by sea effect and the mountainous region affected by topography effect.

A new dynamic model for the cutting process inb the end milling process is developed. This model, which describes the dynamic response of the end mill, the chip load geometry including tool runout, the dependence of the cutting forces on the chip load, is used to predict the dynamic cutting force during the end milling process. In order to predict accurately cutting forces and tool vibration, the model which uses instantaneous specific cutting force, inclueds both regenerative effect and penetration effect, The model is verified through comparisons of model predicted cutting force with measured cutting force obtained from machining experiments.

Aluminum thin films were deposited on the silicon substrate by the pyrolysis of TrilsoButylAluminum (TIBA) in a cold wall LPCVD reactor. The effect of substrate on the surface topograply and the decomposition reaction was investigated. The activation energy for the decomposition of TIBA was turned out to be 1 eV from the Arrhenious plot. The surface topography of the CVD aluminum could be improved by the application of thin metal film, which was in-situ deposited on the silicon prior to CVD process.

The impact of the detailed surface data on regional meteorological fields in complex coastal area is studied using RAMS. Resolutions of topography and land use data are very important to numerical modeling, because high resolution data can reflect correct terrain height and detail characteristics of the surface. Especially, in complex coastal region such as Gwangyang area, southern area in Korean Peninsula, high resolution topography and land use data are indispensable for accurate modeling results. This study investigated the effect of resolutions of terrain data using SRTM with 3 second resolution topography and KLU with 1 second resolution land use data. Case HR was the experiment using high resolution data, whereas Case LR used low resolution data. In Case HR, computed surface temperature was higher than Case LR along the coastline and wind speed was $1{\sim}2m/s$ weaker than Case LR. Time series of temperature and wind speed indicated great agreement with the observation data. Moreover, Case HR indicated outstanding results on statistical analysis such as regression, root mean square error, index of agreement.
Titanium (Ti) has been widely used for dental implant due to great biocompatibility and bonding ability against natural alveolar bone. A lot of titanium surface modification has been introduced in dentistry and, among them, methods to introduce micro/nano-roughened surface were considered as clinically approved strategy for accelerating osseointegration of Ti dental implant. To have synergetic effect with topography oriented favors in cell attachment, chair-side surface treatment with reproducibility of micro/nano-topography is introduced as next strategy to further enhance cellular functionalities. Extensive research has been investigated to study the potential of micro/nano-topography preserved chair-side surface treatment for Ti dental implant. This review will discuss ultraviolet, low level of laser therapy and non-thermal atmospheric pressure plasma on Ti dental implant with micro/nano-topography as next generation of surface treatment due to its abilities to induce super-hydrophilicity or biofunctionality without change of topographical cues.
