  • In recent years, the damage scales of water disasters such as typhoons, tsunamis, and heavy snow have been increasing globally as a result of global warming and climate changes. In particular, the economic loss caused by typhoons has been increasing for overpopulated areas that have undergone economic development and urbanization since the 1960s. In this study, we investigated and analyzed satellite images captured before and after typhoons on the Korean peninsula, including Typhoon Chaba (2016), Typhoon Rusa ('02), and Typhoon Maemi ('03). There was a limitation in utilizing existing satellites. Domestic satellites have mostly been developed and operated for the observation of the weather, ocean, and topography, as well as for use in communication. There are therefore insufficient temporal and spatial observations for water management and disaster response. In this work, we expanded the scope to overseas satellites and collected data from GMS, TRMM, COMS, and GPM. In the future, it will be necessary to develop and launch water resources satellites that can provide sufficient temporal and spatial data analysis units to obtain rapid and accurate water hazard information for the Korean peninsula.

  • This study was carried out to classify forest vegetation of the Mt. Naeyeon with phytosociological analysis of ZM school and to explain ordination of communities with CCA. The research sites were located between the northern part of Pohang-si area and the southern part of Yeongdeok-gun area. The 70 plots consisted of 253 species were investigated. The forest vegetation was classified into Quercus mongolica community, Q. variabilis community, Pinus densiflora community, Carpinus laxiflora community and Zelkova serrata community. Q. mongolica community was divided into 2 groups such as Rhododendron schlippenbachii group and Euonymus oxyphyllus group and Q. variabilis community was divided into 3 groups such as Syneilesis palmata group, Lespedeza$\times$tomentilia group and Tilia mandshurica group, and Z. serrata community was divided into 2 groups such as Carpinus cordata group and Diospyros lotus group. According to the results of CCA ordination, Q. mongolica community showed high positive correlation to altitude and topography, whereas it showed negative correlation to bare rock. But Z. serrata community showed the opposite tendency to Q. mongolica community, Altitude was considered as the most important factor among 5 environmental variables in the correlation with axes.

  • On the basis of the Landsat TM scenes with 15 year's time differences, the topographic maps with 50 years differences, and the air photos with 25 years differences, we carried out the field survey for geology and forestry and analyzed the topographical change and the variation of the forest resource in Anmyundo. In terms of the discrimination of forest trees in Anmyumdo, the NDVI with larger than 0.5 in the winter season is the indicator of the surface of the pine tree land-cover. The peak values of NDVI appear on the surface of the pine aging 30 through 50 years and decrease a little and grossly stabilized over the more aging trees. The distinction of the deciduous forest and grass land from the pine tree was capable with the correlation with the abrupt seasonal variation of NDVI and the surface aspect. The great change of topography is detected in the region Changgiri due to the continuous tidal erosion since the canal construction about 370 years ago and along the all around coast of Anmyundo due to the reclamation for the paddy field. The surface area of the pine tree land-cover in Anmyundo was estimated 35.91 km$^2$ in 1986 and 33.15 km$^2$ in 1993, which is originated from the grassland development in the southeastern part of Anmyundo where the pine tree dominated by 1986. In the northen part of Anmyundo the surface area of the pine land-cover increased a little in 1993 comparing to 1986.

  • Bottom sediments from Youngil Bay, East Coast of Korea, were analyzed for grain composition as well as elemental compositions and total organic carbon (TOC) content in order to investigate the spatial variability and content of metal elements. Grain size distribution of the sediments seems to be controlled by anticlockwise current pattern with bottom topography of the study area. Spatial variability of TOC and all elemental contents reflects those of grain size, but an exception was found in the harbor area (Old-Port): their contents are high in the central part of the bay with the muddy sediment and decrease toward the sand-dominated coastal zone. However, contents of Ca, Sr, K are high in the sand-dominated coastal zone and contents of some heavy metals (Cd, Cu, Zn) are high in the Old-Port area and the mouth of Hyeongsan River. The correlation matrix and R-mode factor analyses reveal that four important factors controlling the distribution of metals in the bay are sediment grain size (or quartz dilution effect), the formation of sulfide minerals associated with decomposition of organic matters under anoxic geochemical environment, calcium carbonate (mainly shell fragments) and coarse-grained feldspar mineral. According to the metal content of labile fraction an CER (concentration enrichment ratio) value, high accumulation of some heavy metals in the harbor area seems to result not formed by early diagenetic processes under anoxic environment.

  • This research carried out forest community classification on the basis of the methods of ZM school, in order to furnish useful information needed for forest management, and for afforestation and preservations of Abies koreana forest which was Korean native species, and the research results could be summarized as follows. Abies koreana forest was divided into 10 vegetation units ; This forest was divided into Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community and Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community. Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community was divided into Tripterygium regelii group, Patrinia saniculaefolia group, and Typical group, and Tripterygium regelii group seas divided into Typical subgroup. Pimpinella brachycarpa subgroup, and Hemirocallis fulva subgroup. Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community was divided into Berberis koreana group, Trachelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium group, and Typical group. Berberis koreana group was divided into Typical subgroup and Hepatica asiatica subgroup, and Tranchelospermum asiaticum var. intermedium group was divided into Hepatica asiatica subgroup and Typical subgroup. According to the results of the analysis by coincidence method, Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community represented in Mt. Chiri, Mt. Deokyu and Mt. Kaya which were located in the Sobaek mountains, Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community represented in Mt. Hanla. Therefore it was thought that Abies koreana forest was classified by geographical position, and vegetation units of Abies koreana forest tended to be classified by the altitude and topography. As for DBH and height of Abies koreana, mean DBH and height of Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community were each 28.4cm, 10.6m that were larger than mean DBH and mean height(each 23.6cm, 6.3m) of Sasa quelpartensis community. Among Abies koreana-Quercus mongolica community, Patrinia saniculae-folia group had the smallest mean DBH and mean height(20cm, 5m), and among Abies koreana-Sasa quelpartensis community, Typical group had the smallest mean DBH and mean height(4cm, 3m).

  • There are much damage of people and property because of heavy rain every year. Especially, there are problem to major facility such as dam, bridge, road, tunnel, and industrial complex in the ground stability. So the counter plan for landslide or ground failure must be necessary In the study, the technique of regional landslide susceptibility assessment near the Ulsan petrochemical complex and Kumgang railway bridge was developed and applied using GIS. For the assessment, the geological structures such as bedding and fault were surveyed and the geological structure, topographic, soil, forest, and land use spatial database were constructed using CIS. Using the spatial database, the factors that influence landslide occurrence, such as slope, aspect, curvature and type of topography, texture, material, drainage and effective thickness of soil, type, age, diameter and density of forest, and land use were calculated or extracted from the spatial database. For application of geological structure, the geological structure line and fault density were calculated. Landslide susceptibility was analyzed using the landslide-occurrence factors by probability method that is summation of landslide occurrence probability values per each factors range or type. The landslide susceptibility map can be used to assess ground stability to protect major facility.

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest vegetation management method as the cultural landscape forest of Dongbaek Island which is the district monument. The study area was $20,000m^2$ around the peak area in management as the nature sabbatical area. Vegetation structure type was classified with the criteria of topography, vegetation, management and the management plan was derived from the vegetation structure analysis according to the types. Vegetation structure types were Management-Camellia japonica, Non-management-Eurya japonica, Non-management-Rugged area-Eurya japonica. As the result of vegetation structure, Pinus thunbergii dominated in canopy layer and Camellia japonica and Eurya japonica dominated in Type I and in Type II and III, respectively. Especially, Machilus thunbergii as the climax species in the warm temperate forest were distributed centering shrubs, and as the result of distribution of diameter of breast height, middle size of Celtis sinensis and Machilus thunbergii were distributed in type I, II. Machilus thunbergii were distributed in range of 4 to 44 individuals through the all types. Mean age of canopy layer was 66 year-old and sub-canopy layer was 22.9 year-old. Shanon's species diversity was analysed from 0.5472 to 0.8646. As the vegetation management direction of Dongbaek island, managed Camellia japonica forest was suggested to maintain the regular management and non-managed Eurya japonica forest was required to remove the Eurya japonica and plant the Camellia japonica. In case of non managed Eurya japonica forest in rugged area, vegetation succession was required to laurel forest.

  • A variety of informations obtained from satellite image, digital elevation relief map (DEM), borehole logging, televiewer, geophysical prospecting, etc were synthetically analyzed to investigate subsurface geological and structural characteristics and to evaluate geohazard pertinent to fault-damage in the Busan metropolitan city. It is revealed that the geology is composed of the Cretaceous andesitic$\sim$dacitic volcanics, gabbro, and granitoid and that at least three major faults including the Dongrae fault are developed in the study area. Based on characteristics of topography, fault-fractured zone, and isobath maps of the Quaternary sediments and weathered residuals of the basement, the Dongrae fault is decreased in its width and fracturing intensity of damaged zone from south toward north, and the fault is segmented around the area between the Seomyeon and Yangieong junctions. Meanwhile, we drew a geohazard sectional map using the five major parameters that significantly suggest damage intensity of basement by fault, i.e. distance from fault core, TCR, RQD, uniaxial rock strength, and seismic velocity of S wave. The map is evaluated as a suitable method to express the geological and structural characteristics and fault-damaged intensity of basement in the study area. It is, thus, concluded that the proposed method can contribute to complement and amplify the capability of the present evaluation system of rock mass.

  • The result of forest vegetation classification could be quite different and dependant on analysis methods. The purpose of this study was to compare the analyzed results for three kinds of methods (physiognomy dominant species, floristic composition and interspecific association) related to vegetation classification. Vegetation data were collected by the 80 quadrates in Mt. Oseo, Chungcheongnam-do from September to October in 2016. We carried out community type classification using above three methods. As a result, the vegetation according to physiognomy dominant species was classified into ten communities such as Pinus densiflora community, Quercus mongolica community, Zelkova serrata community, Quercus acutissima community, Cornus controversa community, Quercus serrata community, Larix kaempferi community, Pinus rigida community, Castanea crenata community and Liriodendron tulipifera community. The vegetation according to floristic composition was classified into 4 vegetation units. It was totally represented by Lindera erythrocarpa community group. And L. erythrocarpa community group was classified into the Rhododendron mucronulatum community (subdivided R. mucronulatum typical group and Styrax obassia group) and Zelkova serrata community (subdivided Larix kaempferi group and Pseudostellaria palibiniana group). As a result of interspecific association, forest vegetation was divided into two groups. And it was considered that the vegetation type by floristic composition and interspecific association significant could be affected by topography. There were lots of vegetation groups or units in the order like 10 types of communities by the physiognomy dominant species, 8 species group and 4 vegetation types by the floristic composition, and 2 types by the interspecific association. In conclusion, vegetation classification methods elicited diverse vegetation groups or units with lots of correlations of environmental factors.
