  • Volcanic rocks including rhyolitic tuff, rhyolite and welded tuff in the Bupyeong silver mine area form a topographic circular structure known as a resurgent caldera. Granitic rocks are emplaced inside and outside area of the circular structure. K-Ar dating and Nd-Sr isotope studies were carried out to invesitigate the origin and petrogenetic evolution of the rhyolitic and granitic magma in the Bupeong silver mine area. Whole rock K-Ar age ranges from 208 to 131 Ma for rhyolitic rocks. Radiometric ages for the granitic rocks are 167.6 Ma for pink feldspar biotite granite from inside granitic pluton of the circular volcanic body, 178.8 Ma for the Kimpo hornblende biotite granite and 111.8 Ma for the Songdo foliated granite from outside granitic plutons of the volcanic body. The radiometric age data indicates that the volcanic activities which are partly overlapped by granite plutonic activities in the Bupyeong mine area had recorded early Jurassic and early Cretaceous in age. Initial Sr and Nd isotopic ratios of the rhyolitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.710~0.719 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5118) are similar to those of granitic rocks ($^{87}Sr/^{86}Sr$=0.709~0.716 and $^{143}Nd/^{144}Nd$=0.5115~0.5116) from inside granite stock. This means that similar source materials of felsic magma responsibles for the Bupyeong volcanic rocks and inside plutonic rocks. Based on the Nd and Sr isotopic compositions, rhyolitic and granitic magmas in the Bupyeong area originated from the partial melting of the old continental crust which has Nd model age ranging from 1500 to 2900 Ma. This is analogous to those of the other Jurassic granitoids in South Korea.

  • The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer (ASTER) on-board the NASA's Terra spacecraft provides along-track digital stereo image data at 15m resolution with a base-height ratio 0.6. Automated stereocorrelation procedure was implemented using the ENVI 4.1 software to derive DEMs with $15m{\times}15m$ in 43km long and 50km wide area using the ASTER stereo images. The accuracy of DEMs was analyzed in comparison with those which were obtained from digital topographic maps of 1:25,000 scale. Results indicate that RMSE in elevation between ${\pm}7$ and ${\pm}20m$ could be achieved. Excluding cloud, water and building areas as the factors which make RMSE value exceeding 10m, the accuracy of DEMs showed RMSE of ${\pm}5.789m$. Therefore for the purpose of elevating accuracy of topographic information, we intended to detect the cloud areas and shadow areas by a landcover classification method, remove those areas on the ASTER DEM and then replace with those areas detached from the cartographic DEM by band math.

  • Levee safety is being evaluated using one of the several failure causes including overtopping, infiltration and erosion or 1D hydraulic analysis considering physical characteristics of levee in practical engineering works. However, mentioned evaluation methods are not able to consider various failure causes of levee at the same time and to get reliable results where requires the accurate topographic information. This study proposed the flood hazard index which is able to consider several hazard factors involving overtopping, infiltration and erosion risk simultaneously. The index was generated from results of 2D hydraulic analysis reflecting accurate topographic information. The study areas are the confluences of the Nakdong River and two streams(Gamcheon and Hoecheon). Levee safety was evaluated using results based on 2D hydraulic analysis considering riverbed changes of before and after dredging work in the study area. This study will contribute to estimate the reliable safety evaluation of levee where may have hazards during extreme flood events.

  • Recently, a variety of GIS-based tools enabling to generate topographic parameters for hydrologic and hydraulic researches have been developed. However, most of GIS-based tools are usually insufficient to estimate and visualize river channel slopes especially along the river network, which can be possibly utilized for many hydraulic equations such as Manning's formula. Many existing GIS-based tools have simply averaged cell-based slopes for the other advanced level of hydrologic units as likely as the mean watershed slope, thus that the river channel slope from the simple approach resulted in the inaccurate channel slope particularly for the mountain region where the slope varies significantly along the downstream direction. The paper aims to provide several more advanced GIS-based methodologies to assess the river channel slopes along the given river network. The developed algorithms were integrated with a newly developed tool named RiverSlope, which adapted theoretical formulas of river hydraulics to calculate channel slopes. For the study area, Han stream in the Jeju island was selected, where the channel slopes have a tendency to rapidly change the upstream near the Halla mountain and sustain the mild slope adjacent to watershed outlet heading for the ocean. The paper compared the simple slope method from the Arc Hydro, with other more complicated methods. The results are discussed to decide better approaches based on the given conditions.

  • The aim of this study is to analyze relationships between topography/geology which affects physically groundwater regime and groundwater yield properties in Pohang City using Geographic Information System (GIS). For the purpose, topographic factors such as ground elevation, ground elevation difference, ground slope, and ground regional slope, and hydrogeologic unit, and groundwater yield properties factors such as transmissivity, specific capacity, and well yield, were constructed to spatial data base. Then the relationships between topography, geology and groundwater yield properties were analyzed quantitatively using GIS overlay technique. As the results, ground-water yield of unconsolidated sediments and porous volcanic rocks is the highest among the hydrogeologic units of study area, and clastic sedimentary rock is the lowest. There are positive relationship between the elevation and elevation difference and the groundwater yield properties and negative relationship between the topographic slope and the groundwater yield properties.

  • A new High Resolution Geometry or HRG imaging instrument is developed by CNES to be carried on-board SPOT 5. The HRG instrument offers a higher ground resolution than that of the HRV/HRVIR on SPOT 1 - 4 satellites. The field width of HRG is 60 km, same as SPOT constellation. With two HRG instruments, a maximum swath of 120 km at 5 m resolution can be achieved. The generation of Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) from satellite stereo images scores over conventional methods of DEM generation using topographic maps and aerial photographs. This global availability of satellite images allows for quicker data processing for an equivalent area. In this study, a HRG stereo images of SPOT 5 over JECHEON has been used with Leica Photogrammetry Suite OrthoBASE Pro tool for the creation of a digital elevation model (DEM). The extracted DEM was compared to the reference DEM obtained from the contours of digital topographic map.

  • The interest of sediment has been increased daily because most of domestic dam reservoir's operation time have been extended and wide basin area is the main characteristics for artificial reservoir which the speed of water flow in artificial reservoir is slower than that of natural reservoir. Therefore a lot of sediment has been significantly accumulated. In this study, the accurate topographic data were obtained using echo-sounding system. GPS survey, low-frequency sub-bottom profiler, and high-frequency echo-sounding system were used to compute the exact amount of sediment. Based on the results, DEM(Digital Elevation Model) and DSM(Digital Surface Model) were generated. The GIS system for the management of sediment was created based on topographic data on the riverbed and this system can be efficiently used for the management of sediment which caused the problems of reservoir capacity and water quality.

  • The purpose of this study is to review and overcome the limits of the existing design wave model applied to such waters as those located inside bays or near islands where the impact of wind influenced waves are more dominant, due to the nature of topographic isolation, than the influence of direct waves coming from the open sea. Although the existing model for an inside bay design wave is excellent for considering wind factors and very adaptable to topographically complicated areas compared to other models, it is difficult to show the wave diffractions and reflections caused by large scale structures or topographic features in the region. The study examined the various methods capable of taking into account wave diffraction, the angle of wave reflection, and changes in water depth. As a result of applying the modified design wave model to the target situation (inside bay or near island areas), it was found that the reliability of the design wave height around marine structures was improved, compared to the existing models. Therefore, it is fair to predict that the new model could provide more accurate design waves in the design of marine structures.

  • Most of previous landform classification methods using DEM compares the values between the center of the cell and the surrounding cells, which in turn, greatly depends on analysis scale. To overcome the problem of scale-dependency, a new classification scheme is developed, which is called "Geomorphons". Unlike the traditional approaches using DEM, Geomorphons is the way which compares the level with other cells against the criteria cell. As a pilot study, we classify the landforms of Pyeongchang-Gun in Korea. Then, we compare the result with the other methods such as Topographic Position Index. Through the systematic analysis, we obtain the following findings. First, Geomorphons can reduce the time for the classification of landforms because of using unsupervised classification. Second, Geomorphons is little dependent on change in the scale, which can provide a pilot tool for reconnaissance study for covering large area.
