  • In this paper, we propose a topic network analysis approach which integrates topic modeling and social network analysis. We collected 2,039 scientific papers from five top journals in the field of data mining published from 1996 to 2015, and analyzed them with the proposed approach. To identify topic trends, time-series analysis of topic network is performed based on 4 intervals. Our experimental results show centralization of the topic network has the highest score from 1996 to 2000, and decreases for next 5 years and increases again. For last 5 years, centralization of the degree centrality increases, while centralization of the betweenness centrality and closeness centrality decreases again. Also, clustering is identified as the most interrelated topic among other topics. Topics with the highest degree centrality evolves clustering, web applications, clustering and dimensionality reduction according to time. Our approach extracts the interrelationships of topics, which cannot be detected with conventional topic modeling approaches, and provides topical trends of data mining research fields.

  • As FRBR defines structural framework based on ER modeling for bibliographic data elements, an effective tool is required to implement FRBR model. In this paper, we present the implementation of FRBR model based on Topic Maps. To show the effectiveness of Topic Maps as the implantation language of FRBR, we implement FRBR model of MyongSungHwangHu by means of Topic Maps. We can ascertain that topic-association of Topic Maps conceptually harmonize with entity-relation of FRBR, which means that Topic Maps is suitable for the implementation of FRBR model.

  • While the body of research on metadata has grown substantially, there has been a lack of systematic analysis of the field of metadata. In this study, we attempt to fill this gap by examining metadata literature spanning the past 20 years. With the combination of a text mining technique, topic modeling, and network analysis, we analyzed 2,713 scholarly papers on metadata published between 1995 and 2014 and identified main topics and trends in metadata research. As the result of topic modeling, 20 topics were discovered and, among those, the most prominent topics were reviewed in detail. In addition, the changes over time in the topic composition, in terms of both the relative topic proportions and the structure of topic networks, were traced to find past and emerging trends in research. The results show that a number of core themes in metadata research have been established over the past decades and the field has advanced, embracing and responding to the dynamic changes in information environments as well as new developments in the professional field.

How Are the Direction and the Intensity of Indirect Social Information such as Likes and Dislikes Related to the Deliberative Quality of Online News Content Comments? • Purpose The online comments on news content have become social information and are understood based on deliberative democracy. Although the related research has focused on the relationship between online comments and their deliberative quality, the social information provided by online comments consists of not only direct information such as comments themselves but also indirect information such as 'likes' and 'dislikes'. Therefore, the research on online comments and deliberative quality should study this direct and indirect information together, and the direction and the degree of the indirect information should be also considered with them. Design/methodology/approach This study distinguishes comments by the attached 'likes' and 'dislikes', identifies highly supported and highly unsupported comments by the intensity of 'likes' and 'dislikes', and investigates the relationship between their existence and the deliberative quality measured as the topic diversity. Then, we applied topic modeling to the 2,390 news articles and their 74,385 comments collected from five news sites. Findings The topic diversities of the supported and unsupported comments are related to the topic diversity of all comments but the degree of the relationship is higher in the case of supported comments. Furthermore, the existence of highly supported and unsupported comments is led to less diversity of all comments compared to the case where those comments are absent. Particularly, when only highly supported comments are present, topic diversity was lower than in the opposite case.

  • To delve into the semantic gap problem of the automatic video summarization, we focused on an endogenous ERP responses at around 400ms and 600ms after the on-set of audio-visual stimulus. Our experiment included two factors: the topic exploration of experimental conditions (Topic Given vs. Topic Exploring) as a between-subject factor and the topic relevance of the shots (Topic-Relevant vs. Topic-Irrelevant) as a within-subject factor. For the Topic Given condition of 22 subjects, 6 short historical documentaries were shown with their video titles and written summaries, while in the Topic Exploring condition of 25 subjects, they were asked instead to explore topics of the same videos with no given information. EEG data were gathered while they were watching videos in real time. It was hypothesized that the cognitive activities to explore topics of videos while watching individual shots increase the amplitude of endogenous ERP at around 600 ms after the onset of topic relevant shots. The amplitude of endogenous ERP at around 400ms after the onset of topic-irrelevant shots was hypothesized to be lower in the Topic Given condition than that in the Topic Exploring condition. The repeated measure MANOVA test revealed that two hypotheses were acceptable.

  • Topic detection is a problem of discovering the topics of online publishing documents. For topic detection, it is important to extract correct topic words and to show the topical words easily to understand. We consider a topic tree-based approach to more effectively and more briefly show the result of topic detection for online text documents. In this paper, to achieve the topic tree-based topic detection, we propose a new term weighting method, called CTF-CDF-IDF, which is simple yet effective. Moreover, we have modified a conventional clustering method, which we call incremental k-medoids algorithm. Our experimental results with Reuters-21578 and Google news collections show that the proposed method is very useful for topic detection.

  • This study investigates the semantic and prosodic properties of the so-called contrastive topic. We posit two informational primitives, namely, topical feature [+-T] and focal feature [+-F], from which four different informational categories, i.e., [+T, +F], [+T, -F], [-T, +F], and [-T, -F], are yielded. It is proposed that the informational category of contrastive topic has focal property [+F] as well as topical property [+T]. Based on the semantic approach that regards the function of [+F] as identificational predication and that of [+T] as forming a semantic conditional clause, it is shown that the semantic function of contrastive topic, which is specified as [+T, +F], is the combination of these two functions, i.e., identificational predication in a semantic conditional clause. This is supported by a scrutinized exploration of the prosodic pattern of English contrastive topic.

  • As Topic Modeling has been applied in increasingly various domains, the difficulty in naming and characterizing topics also has been recognized more. This study, therefore, explores an approach of combining text mining with network analysis in a multi-step approach. The concept of synchronization was applied to re-assign the top author keywords in more than one topic category, in order to improve the visibility of the topic-author keyword network, and to increase the topical cohesion in each topic. The suggested approach was applied using 16,548 articles with 2,881 unique author keywords in construction and building engineering indexed by KSCI. As a result, it was revealed that the combined approach could improve both the visibility of the topic-author keyword map and topical cohesion in most of the detected topic categories. There should be more cases of applying the approach in various domains for generalization and advancement of the approach. Also, more sophisticated evaluation methods should also be necessary to develop the suggested approach.
