  • This study was conducted to investigate varietal difference in viviparous germinability at different days after heading and temperature conditions. Three Japonica rice varieties, Sobaekbyeo, Odaebyeo and Hwaseongbyeo, and Sare type rice variety, Jakwangdo, showed higher viviparous germination rate from 20 days after heading, while a Tongil type rice, ]ungwonbyeo, and a Indica varieyt, IR-20, showed still low viviparous germination at 40 days after heading. Viviparous germination rate of rice varieties observed at 4 and 10 days after incubation was greately increased with increasing temperature from 15$^{\circ}C$ to 3$0^{\circ}C$ , and germination rate less than 5% was observed at 4 days after incubating at 15$^{\circ}C$ in all rice varieties teased. Viviparous germination pattern of rice varieties was divided into two types. Three Japonica and Sare type rice varieties showed higher and faster in viviparous germination than a Tongil type and Indica rice verieties. Viviparous germination was delayed under day /night fluctuation of incubation temperature compared with day /night fluctuation of incubation temperature compared with day /night constant condition at the same average temperature. The optimum incubation temperature and duration to evaluate viviparous germinability of rice varieties were 25/15$^{\circ}C$ and 6 days, respectively.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of hot water immersion treatment on the control of white tip nematode (Aphelenchoides besseyi) in rice seeds. Disease incidence and yield losses induced by white tip nematode were alos investigated in association with resistance of various rice cultivars. The hot water immersion treatment of rice seeds at $61^{\circ}C$ for 10-15 minutes was effective for the control of the white tip nematode. The stem of most Japonica-type cultivars was damaged by white tip nematode. The Tongil-type cultivars, however, were not infected by the nematode at all. Diseas incidence of Japonica-type cultivars, Odaebyeo and Bogkwangbyeo were 95.6% and 81.8%, respectively. The number of nematodes in infected rice seeds of both Japonica-type and Togil-type cultivars was over 100 per 10gr rice seeds. Although Tongil-type cultivars didn't show white tip symptoms, the yield loss was found in many cultivars. The yield was reduced by 40% Japonica-type cultivars, Odaebyeo and Bogkwangbyeo that were infected by white tip nematode. The yield loss in Japonica-type cultivars was more severe than that in Tongil-type cultiveas. The resistance of Youngdege 5 was highest than any other cultivars showing no disease symptoms and yield loss.

  • Frequent occurrence of off-type plants in a given cultivar has been a serious problem in both breeder's and farmer's fields. An experiment was designed to examine the differences in rate of occurrence of off-type plants among Tongil-type cultivars (high yielding cultivars derived from indica/japonica hybridization) from which the possible cause of higher occurrence of off-type plant in a specific cultivar was deduced. Among five Tongil-type cultivars examined for morphological variant in the field, only one cultivar, Dasanbyeo, had off-type plants. When analyzed with SSR markers, off-type plants showed different band patterns from original cultivar, having several extra bands in addition to cultivar-specific band, suggesting that off-type plants were originated from Dasanbyeo, rather than originated from mixing or mishandling of seed materials with other cultivars. The possible cause of off-type occurrence seems to be natural pollination with other cuItivars adjacent to the original cultivar during seed multiplication. This was supported from the observation that self-crossed progeny of the off type plants showed a wide range of variation of agronomic traits which could not be observed when there was a smaller introduction of genes to the fixed germplasm as happened in the case of cultivar mutation. Another evidence supported this idea that Dasanbyeo showed much of difference in floral organ and behavior to other cultivar to be subjected to higher out-crossing than other cultivars examined.

  • 1. Results in Nursery This experiment was carried out on the effect of the seed treament, soil preparations, kinds of covering soil and inside covering methods in two rice varieties, 'Tongil' and 'Akibare' to find out the most reasonable model of the flat nursery bed, with which lower cost is required comparing with the tunnel nursery. The results obtained are as follows: (1) The seedling of all plots of the ordinary seed were very poor compared to the plots of sprouted seed. (2) In case that the variety 'Tongil' was cultivated on the dry nursery bed, the good seedling percentage and the plant height rat io were significantly increased but the other characteristics of the seedling were not noticeable. (3) The kinds of the covering soil had not an effect on the seedling growth significantly. (4) Inside straw mulching was seemed effective for the protection in the case of the extreme high temperature and heavy rain fall, even though there was not significant differences between inside straw mulching and no treatments at the flat type nursery. (5) Difference of seedling growth between the flat type nursery and the tunnel type nursery was not significant. And it's reason was thought that the covering period of polyethylene film was short in semi hot nursery for the common early transplanting cultivation of rice. (6) The percentage of good seedling was higher at 'Akibare' than 'Tongil', variety but the number of seedling leaf and the seedling growth ratio in height were significantly increased in the variety 'Tongil'. The other seedling characters between there two varieties were not significantly different. 2. Results after transplanting This experiment was conducted to study on the ripening percentage, rice yield and disease, appearance of the seedling from sprouted seed plots including common irrigated nursery as check plot after transplantnig. The results obtained are summarized as follows: (1) The rice yield, the yield components and the appearance of leaf discoloration of both varieties, 'Tongil' and 'Akibare' were slightly betterat the plot of the standard tunnel nursery than that of the flat nursery with inside mulching or the among these three plots. (2) For 'Tongil' variety, the ripening percentage and the rice yield were significantly decreased at the common irrigated nursery compared with semi hot nursery. (3) The ripening percentage and the rice yield of 'Akibare' contrasted with 'Tongil' were significantly decreased at thesemi 'hot-nursery compared with common irrigated nursery. The main reason was thought to be the injury of the rice stripe disease (Rice stripe disease virus). Considering above mentioned experimental result, the seedling of 'Tongil' must be cultivated on the semi bot nursery for better ripening percentage as well as rice yield and for prevention of red discoloration. And as a model of semi hot nursery, the polyethylene covering nursery of standard tunnel type is most desirable but that of flat type with inside straw mulching is thought to be desirable too.

  • The relationships between the textural properties of cooked rice and hot water-solubles of rice or rice flour were studied. The amounts of solubles or soluble amylose among japonica varieties were similar, but those among Tongil type varieties were different. At the same heating conditions, japonica varieties showed higher contents of solubles as well as soluble amylose than Tongil varieties. The solubles and soluble amylose from rice or rice flour showed a negative correlation with hardness but a positive correlation with adhesivess of rice cooked with optimum water.

  • Twentyseven rice cultivars were compared Quantitatively and classified by 15 agronomic traits. For this, 12 Tongil-type rice cultivars and 15 Japonica-type rice cultivars were transplanted at the experimental farm of the Yeongnam Crop Experiment Station on May 25 in 1987. Jangseongbyeo belonging to Tongil-type had the greatest dissimilarity total among 27 rice cultivars and followed by Chilseongbyeo, Gayabyeo, Hangangchalbyeo, Gihobyeo (Tongil-type) and Sangpoongbyeo (Japonica-type) while cultivars having greatest similarity total were Daecheongbyeo and Yeongsanbyeo and followed by Nagdongbyeo, Sinsunchalbyeo, Gwangmyeongbyeo, Yeongdeogbyeo, Palgongbyeo and Dongjinbyeo that were all belonging to Japonica-type cultivars. CuItivar pairs having the greatest dissimilarity coefficient (50-55%) were combinations of Gayabyeo and Sangpungbyeo, Gihobyeo, or Seonambyeo, combinations of Chilseongbyeo and Jangseongbyeo, Sangpung-byeo, Chucheongbyeo, Gihobyeo or Seonambyeo and combinations of }angseongbyeo and Gwangmyeong-byeo, Sangpungbyeo, Gihobyeo, Daechangbyeo or H waseongbyeo. On the other hand, cultivar pairs having the greatest similarity coefficient (above 85 %) were combinations of Dongjinbyeo and Sinsunchalbyeo, Daecheongbyeo, Somjinbyeo or Yeongsanbyeo, combination of Sangpungbyeo and Gihobyeo, combinations of Yeongdeogbyeo and Yeongsanbyeo or Palgongbyeo, combination of Gwangmyeongbyeo and Yeongdeogbyeo, Combinations of Nagdongbyeo and Gwangmyeongbyeo, Yeongdeogbyeo, Daecheongbyeo, Hwaseongbyeo or Yeongsanbyeo, combinations of Sinsunchalbyeo and Daecheongbyeo or Yeongsanbyeo, combinations of Somjinbyeo and Daecheongbyeo or Yeongsanbyeo and combination of Daecheongbyeo nd Yeongsanbyeo. Two-dimensional ordination analysis method provided the information on cultivar classification between Japonica-type and Tongil-type cultivars except a few cultivars. Only two cultivars, Joongweonbyeo and Seomjinbyeo were located opposit area that implied Tongil-type cultivar Joongweonbyeo was rather close to Japonica-type while Japonica-type cultivar Seomjinbyeo was rather close to Tongil-type, respectively. Sinsunchalbyeo and Daecheongbyeo, on the other hand, were located on the line between two cultivar groups. The method of two-dimensional ordination analysis concluded as feasible approach to classify cultivars Quantitatively for the practical purpose.

  • This study was conducted to provide the fundamental data based on the analysis of phsyco-chemical characteristics of domestic aroma rice and foreign aroma rice for breeding of aroma rice. The average amylose content of domestic aroma rice and widely cultured domestic traditional rice were 18.1% and 19.0% respectively. The Indica and the Japonica types were 25.6% and 25.0%. In the domestic rice of Tongil and Japonica type, the average protein content were 7.6% and 6.4% respectively. And the average protein content of foreign Indica and Japonica type were 7.6% and 7.0% respectively. And the average protein content of widely cultured domestic traditional rice was 5.6%. The Japonica type of rice shown a low protein content compared with Indica type of rice, and the foreign Indica types of rice exhibited a wide range of protein contents. The average alkali digestive value (ADV) of Tongil type of the domestic aroma rice was about 5.0 and the value of Japonica type was about 6.0. The average ADV of foreign Indica and Japonica type were 4.3 and 5.1 respectively. Also the average ADV of widely cultured domestic aroma rice was about 6.0. The foreign aroma rice were distributed a variable range of ADV value and lower than the both domestic aroma rice and widely cultivated domestic rice. In the whole aspect of the amylogram, the highest viscosity, the lowest viscosity and the last viscosity of the total resources, in domestic aroma rice were clearly lower with the next order, Japonica type of foreign aroma rice, Indica type of foreign aroma rice, Japonica type of domestic aroma rice, widely cultured domestic traditional rice, and Tongil type of domestic aroma rice. It shown the difference aspect of amylograms according to the eco-type of the domestic and foreign aroma and the general rice, and it was distinguishable in difference of the aspect of the amylogram of the endosperm of rice as non-glutinous rice, waxy rice, and middle-waxy rice.

  • Saemimyeon, a Tongil type, medium-late maturing rice variety, is especially used for preparing rice noodles. Its high amylose content was developed to fit market demands and to be affordable for rice processing industries. One of the high yielding lines, Milyang181 (Hanareum), was used in the final three-way cross of $IR50^*2$/YR18241-B-B-115-1-1 for yield improvement and cultivation stabilization, including disease resistance. YR24235-10-1-3, a high yielding and compact plant type, was selected and named Milyang278 after yield test at NICS (RDA, Miryang) in 2010. It was subjected to regional yield test at six sites in the middle and southern plain areas of South Korea. Saemimyeon heading occurs on August 12 and is a mid-late maturing cultivar, with resistance to leaf blast, rice stripe virus, and bacterial blight (K1-K3a), but it is susceptible to major diseases and insect pest infestation. Saemimyeon showed a high amylose content of 26.7%, with a relatively low KOH digestion value of 3.5, which are key factors in rice noodles and pasta processing. In the local adaptability tests, the yield of Saemimyeon was 7.08 MT/ha-an increase of approximately 106% compared to that of Dasan. Thus, Saemimyeon is suitable for cultivation in the southern and middle plain areas of South Korea.
