  • The goals of environmental monitoring are to locate and quantify the significant contamination, estimate the fate and transport, estimate the potential exposure and risks to humans and the environment, and track the performance of various remedial technologies. In this study, ceramic gas sensor system is proposed to enhance the effectiveness of soil vapor extraction (SVE) process by monitoring the effluent gas. SVE is a technique that is widely used to remediate unsaturated soils contaminated with volatile organic contaminants. The sensor response for benzene, toluene, and xylene, the representative effluent gas compositions of SVE process, was evaluated using the proposed sensor system. As a result, it was verified that the response of sensor was increased or decreased very sensitively according to the change of the effluent gas concentration. Besides, the sensor could detect the difference over a wide range of concentration and it was more sensitive in order of xylene, toluene, and benzene. It is expected that this VOC analysis method results in field monitoring costs saying and appropriate immediate action for process control. More detailed experiments are being conducted in our research group.

  • Low explosion limits of flammable liquid mixtures can be calculated with the appropriate use of the fundamental laws of Raoult, Dalton, Le Chatelier and activity coefficient models. In this paper, Raoult's law, van Laar equation and Wilson equation are shown to be applicable for the prediction of the lower explosion limits for ethylacetate+ethanol and ethanol+toluene systems. The calculated values based on Raoult's law were found to be better than those based on van Laar and Wilson equations.

  • $TiO_2$ thin films were prepared on C fibers, and photocatalytic activity of these films for removing gas-phase toluene was studied. $TiO_2$ films were deposited on C fiber with 0.5 A-per-cycle growth rate by Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD) using TTIP (titanium tetra-isopropoxide) and $H_2O$ as precursors. The catalysts were characterized by Brunauer-Emmett-Teller (BET) for surface area and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) for morphology, respectively. Moreover, the samples were further characterized by X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS). As a function of $TiO_2$ thickness, no significant change in the photocatalytic activity could be identified. Interestingly, the bare-carbon fiber showed an even higher photocatalytic activity than the $TiO_2$ thin films for removing toluene. Origin of the high photocatalytic activity of the bare C fiber is discussed.

  • Behaviors of $TiO_2$-based photocatalysts with different surface structures on the removal of gas-phase toluene with and without UV irradiation are reported. P-25(Degussa) $TiO_2$ powder dispersed in distilled water by sonication was deposited on the transparent glasses and then dried. Some of the samples were further annealed in oven for 1 hr. These samples obtained before and after annealing were characterized by Brunauer- Emmett-Teller (BET), Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR) spectrometry, respectively. Based on BET and TEM data, no significant structural change upon annealing could be identified. However, the sample without annealing showed a significantly higher ability for removing toluene both in the presence and absence of the UV light. XPS and FT-IR results clearly revealed that the population of the OH groups on the surface of $TiO_2$ was higher for the sample without annealing, indicating that the OH groups can enhance the adsorption capacity and photocatalytic activity of $TiO_2$ for the removal of the gas-phase toluene.

  • The characteristics of adsorption and desorption of benzene and toluene were investigated at a fixed bed packed with the activated carbon and activated carbon fiber. Through breakthrough experiments under various feed concentration conditions, it was found that the slope of mass transfer zone and the tailing in the breakthrough curves were different from the feed conditions due to different heats of adsorption. In hot nitrogen desorption, the regeneration time and mass transfer zone of the toluene desorption curve were longer than those of the benzene desorption curve because of the difference in adsorption affinity. With an increase in the regeneration temperature, the height of roll-up and the sharpness of desorption curves increased but the regeneration times decreased. The adsorption capacities of the activated carbon and activated carbon fiber after three-time thermal regenerations decreased about 25% and 37% for benzene and 18% and 25% for toluene, respectively. To investigate the effect of the regeneration temperature on the energetic efficiency, the characteristic desorption temperatures of toluene and benzene were investigated by calculating purge gas consumption and temperature.

  • The adsorption of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) was carried out using an activated carbon fiber (ACF) filter in an automobile. The adsorption capacities of formaldehyde, toluene, and benzene on an ACF filter were far better than those of a polypropylene (PP) mat filter and combined (PP+activated carbon) mat filter by batch adsorption in a gas bag. In a continuous flow of air containing toluene vapor through an ACF packed bed, the breakpoint time was very long, the length of the unused bed was short, and sharp "S" -type breakthrough curve was plotted soon after breakpoint, showing a narrow mass transfer zone of toluene on the ACF. The adsorption amount of toluene on the ACF filter was proportional to the specific surface area of the ACF; however, the development of mesopores 2-5 nm in size on the ACF was very effective with regard to the adsorption of toluene. The ACF air clarifier filter is strongly recommended to remove VOCs in newly produced automobiles.

  • Biological exposure indices (BEI) of toluene, perchloroethylene (PCE) and methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) for Korean workers were studied respectively. Environmental exposures in workplace to organic solvent were measured by personal sampling. Blood toluene, blood perchloroethylene, urinary trichloroacetic acid and urinary MEK were determined by headspace gas chromatography. Urinary hippuric acid were determined by HPLC and corrected by creatinine. BEIs for Korean workers were calculated as the levels of determinants which are correspond to permissible exposure limits in Korea. Blood toluene level of 2.2mg/l and urinary hippuric acid level of 1.7g/g creatinine are correspond to an exposure of 100 ppm toluene. Blood PCE concentration of 1.6mg/l and urinary trichloroacetic acid concentration of 2.9mg/l are correspond to an exposure of 50ppm PCE. Urinary MEK concentration of 1.0mg/l is correspond to an exposure of 200ppm of MEK. BEIs for Korean workers determined in this study are very different to ACGIH's BEI as urinary determinants are much lower and blood determinants are much higher than ACGIH's BEI.

  • This research was performed for developing of biological treatment process of odor gas such as MEK, $H_{2}S$, and toluene, which is generated from the food waste recycling process. To establish the operational conditions of odor gas removal by small-scale biofiltration equipment, it was continuously operated by using toluene as a treating odor object. When the odor treating microorganisms were adhered to fibril form biofilter, high removal efficiency over 93% was obtained by biofilm formation. At 400 ppm of inlet odor gas concentration and 10 sec of retention time, the removal efficiency was 76% and 93% in 1st stage reactor and 2nd stage reactor, respectively. However, the removal efficiency remained over 97% at the operational conditions above 15 sec of retention time.

  • An automated on-line portable preconcentration-short column gas chromatograph was developed, which used preconcentrator using adsorption tube with Tenax-GR and Curie-point heating. The developed system operated with 3 steps of processing, preconcentration, thermal desorption, and analysis and cleaning, and could continued operating within 1~2 min cycle. The recoveries of preconcentrator for toluene was ranged between $94.7{\pm}6.6%$ and $103.8{\pm}3.1%$ with less than 7% of RSD. For benzene, toluene and xylene(BTX) standard gas test, IDL was 41, 49, $472ng/m^3$ benzene, toluene and o-xylene, respectively. The BTX mixture was analyzed within 30 sec with baseline separation by the system equipped with 4 m long capillary column. The deficiency of separation power caused by short column was solved by the control of sample injection volume and inlet/outlet pressure ratio. The automated portable preconcentration-short column gas chromatograph system was found to be useful for the continuous air monitoring of BTX at ppb levels in ambient air.

  • The effect of major operating parameters in spray drying sorber(=SDS) for automatic control for the simultaneous removal of acidic and organic gaseous pollutants from solid waste incinerator was performed. The field experiment was carried out in pilot scale test for the quantification of major operating parameters of hydrophilic and the hydrophobic pollutants. The removal efficiencies of $SO_2$and HCI in the 5wt% slurry condition were being increased with the increase of the stoichiometric ration which is the molecular ratio of lime to the pollutant concentration, and with the decrease of inflow flue gas temperature in the pilot SDS reactor. The removal efficiency along the height of spray drying sorber was closely related to the temperature profile, and more than 90% of total removal efficiency was achieved in an absorption region. For the removal of acidic gas the optimum operating condition considering the economics and a stable operation is the 5wt% of slurry concentration, 1.2 of stoichiometric ratio and 25$0^{\circ}C$ of inflow flue gas temperature. For the organic gases of benzene and toluene the removal efficiencies were 20-60% which is much lower than that of acidic gas. The best removal efficiency was obtained at 1.5 of stoichiometric ratio and 25$0^{\circ}C$ of inflow flue gas temperature. The organic\`s removal efficiency along the height of spray drying sorber was quite different from that of acidic gas, that is, more than 60% of the total removal efficiency for benzene and 90% of the total removal for toluene were achieved in the dried adsorption region, which was formed at the lower or exit part of the reactor.
