Four dogs were presented with the history of progressive abdominal distension and regurgitation. Survey abdominal radiographs revealed gastric dilatation-volvulus (GDV) with a distended, gas-filled stomach and double bubbles. The mean time from onset of clinical signs to presentation to a clinic was 3.25 hours. In three dogs, orogastric tubes were inserted and their stomachs were decompressed. However, we failed to insert the tube in the remaining one dog. Among these four dogs, gastrotomy was performed in two dogs to remove the gastric contents and to decompress the stomach additionally during surgery. The dogs with GDV were treated with belt-loop gastropexy (n=3) or circumcostal gastropexy (n=1) to prevent recurrence. Necrosis of gastric or splenic tissues was not observed during surgical intervention. All four dogs recovered uneventfully, and no recurrence was found in long term follow-up during $1{\sim}3$ years.
A 3-year-old castrated male Siberian husky was presented for evaluation after being hit by a car. On physical examination, the dog showed open-mouth, displacement of mandible and hypersalivation with blood ting. The base of tongue was transected almost 80% on the bias from right dorsal side to the left ventral side. Radiography demonstrated separation of mandible symphysis, and fracture of right condyle and vertical ramus. After debridement of the necrotic tissue, tongue apposition with simple interrupted suture was performed. Mandibular symphysis, condyle and mandibular vertical ramus fractures were fixed using pin, cerclage wire, T-plate, and K-wires. The mouth was irrigated daily using chlorhexidine after surgery. The sutures that were loose here or untied at tongue were re-sutured under sedation. The transected tongue was healed and recovered its normal movement after 6 weeks.
We developed multimedia esophageal catheters for use with birds to measure and record ECG and angular velocity while anesthesized, at rest, and in flight. These catheters enable estimates of blood pressure based on readings given by an angular velocity sensor and by RR intervals of ECG affected by EMG. In our experiments, the catheters had the following characteristics: 1. Esophageal catheters offer a topological advantage with 8-dB SNR improvement due to elimination of electromyography (EMG). 2. We observed a very strong correlation between blood pressure and the angular velocity of esophageal catheter axial rotation. 3. The impulse conduction pathway (Purkinje fibers) of the cardiac ventricle has a direction opposite to that of the mammalian pathway. 4. Sympathetic nerves predominate in flight, and RR interval variations are strongly suppressed. The electrophysiological data obtained by this study provided especially the state of the avian autonomic nervous system activity, so we can suspect individual's health condition. If the change of the RR interval was small, we can perform an isolation or screening from the group that prevent the pandemics of avian influenza. This catheter shall be useful to analysis an avian autonomic system, to perform a screening, and to make a positive policy against the massive infected avian influenza.

In human fetuses, the left hepatic artery (LHA) issues the marginal artery that runs along the umbilical vein and, sometimes, reaches the umbilicus. The further observation demonstrated that, in 5 of 12 Japanese midterm fetuses (crown-rump length mm: 46, 50, 54, 59, 102), the marginal artery issued not only a thin umbilical branch but also a liver parenchymal branch that took a posterosuperior recurrent course in a peritoneal fold and supplied the anterior surface of the liver left lobe (segment III). However, in 22 Spanish fetuses of which gestational ages corresponded to the Japanese ones, we did not find the parenchymal branch. Therefore, between human populations, there seemed to be a considerable difference in the incidence as to whether or not the marginal artery issues the liver parenchymal branch. The parenchymal branch might be degenerated at the later stages due to friction between the liver free surface and growing diaphragm.
The archaeological remnants of coastal ports and shipwrecks serve as invaluable heritage sites that provide profound insights into historical maritime activities conducted by humans. Cross-regional voyages occurred as early as the beginning of the first millennium, aided by the increasing knowledge of the monsoons. Along with expanding intra- and inter-sailing routes, the improved seaworthiness of vessels facilitated the movement of people and seaborne commodities. The names of the Indic, Kunlun, and Persian ships appear in various historical accounts written in the latter half of the first millennium, and the structural details and characteristics can be physically examined by looking at shipwrecks. Southeast and East Asian shipwrecks from the eighth to the fourteenth century provide a perspective on the dynamism of types of seagoing ships involved in long-distance trade. By examining the remnants of cargo being transported by these ships, we begin to understand how the system of cross-regional shipment of heavy and bulky items, metal objects, fragrant woods, glass, and ceramics sustained and impacted the religions, societies, culture, and regional economies. Furthermore, it helps define the Maritime Silk Route heritage to be managed and protected. As such, this paper gives the archaeological evidence of port ruins and wrecks and also introduces, as an example, a case from Central Vietnam.
We performed a genome-wide linkage and quantitative trait locus (QTL) analysis to confirm the existence of QTL affecting Rous Sarcoma Virus (RSV) induced tumor regression, and to estimate their effects on phenotypic variance in an F2 resource population. The F2 population comprised 158 chickens obtained by crossing tumor regressive White Leghorn (WL) and tumor progressive Rhode Island Red (RIR) lines was measured for tumor formation after RSV inoculation. Forty-three tumor progressive and 28 tumor regressive chickens were then used for genome-wide linkage and QTL analysis using a total of 186 microsatellite markers. Microsatellite markers were mapped on 20 autosomal chromosomes. A significant QTL was detected with marker LEI0258 located within the MHC B region on chromosome 16. This QTL had the highest F ratio (9.8) and accounted for 20.1% of the phenotypic variation. Suggestive QTL were also detected on chromosomes 4, 7 and 10. The QTL on chromosome 4 were detected at the 1% chromosome-wide level explaining 17.5% of the phenotypic variation, and the QTLs on chromosome 7 and 10 were detected at the 5% chromosome-wide level and explained 11.1% and 10.5% of the phenotypic variation, respectively. These results indicate that the QTLs in the non-MHC regions play a significant role in RSV-induced tumor regression. The present study constitutes one of the first preliminary reports in domestic chickens for QTLs affecting RSV-induced tumor regression outside the MHC region.

Surface engineering plays a significant role in fabricating highly functionalized materials applicable to industrial and biomedical fields. Surface wrinkles and folds formed by ion beam or plasma treatment are buckling-induced patterns and controlled formation of those patterns has recently gained considerable attention as a way of creating well-defined surface topographies for a wide range of applications. Surface wrinkles and folds can be observed when a stiff thin layer attached to a compliant substrate undergoes compression and plasma treatment is one of the techniques that can form stiff thin layers on compliant polymeric substrates, such as poly (dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS). Here, we report two effective methods using plasma modification techniques for controlling the formation of surface wrinkles and folds on flat or patterned PDMS substrates. First, we show a method of creating wrinkled diamond-like carbon (DLC) film on grooved PDMS substrates. Grooved PDMS substrates fabricated by a molding method using a grooved master prepared by photolithography and a dry etching process were treated with argon plasma and subsequently coated with DLC film, which resulted in the formation of wrinkled DLC film aligning perpendicular to the steps of the pre-patterned ridges. The wavelength and the amplitude of the wrinkled DLC film exhibited variation in the submicron- to micron-scale range according to the duration of argon plasma pre-treatment. Second, we present a method for controlled formation of folds on flat PDMS substrates treated with oxygen plasma under large compressive strains. Flat PDMS substrates were strained uniaxially and then treated with oxygen plasma, resulting in the formation of surface wrinkles at smaller strain levels, which evolved into surface folds at larger strain levels. Our results demonstrate that we can control the formation and evolution of surface folds simply by controlling the pre-strain applied to the substrates and/or the duration of oxygen plasma treatment.
We assessed effects of ovine luteinizing hormone (oLH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (oFSH) on the granulose and theca layers from the four largest follicles, $F_1-F_4$ of hens which had been hypophysectomized 12 h before expected ovulation. Ovine LH (0.4 mg), oFSH (0.4 mg) or oLH in combination with oFSH (0.4 mg each) was injected intravenously 6 h after hypophysectomy. Progesterone, testosterone and $estradiol-17{\beta}$ levels of the granulose and theca layers which were removed 6 h after hormone injection, were measured by radioimmunoassay. Progesterone contents of $F_1-F_3$ granulosa layer at 12 h after hypophysectomy were much lower than those of control hens. This reduced progesterone level was restored partially by the injection of oLH alone for $F_1$, while no follicles responded to oFSH treatment. In contrast, the injection of oLH in combination with oFSH resulted in high progesterone content of the granulose layer from all four follicles. Progesterone content of the theca layer was negligible in all treatments. Simultaneous injection of oLH and oFSH also elevated $estradiol-17{\beta}$ level accumulating in the theca layer from all follicles, of which much higher concentrations of $estradiol-17{\beta}$ were observed when comparison were made to each of their corresponding controls. No appreciable change in testosterone contents of two layers was observed in the present experiments. These results suggest that oFSH augments function of oLH to stimulate the production of progesterone in the granulose layer and $estradiol-17{\beta}$ in the theca layer.
In the present work, novel orange peel was extracted with 100%EtOH (ethanol) and fractionated into four fractions namely F1, F2, F3, F4 which were eluted from paper chromatographs using 100%EtOH, 80%EtOH, 50%EtOH and pure water respectively. The crude extract and its four fractions were evaluated for their total polyphenol content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC) and radical scavenging activity using DPPH (1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) assay. Their cytotoxic activity using WST assay and DNA damage by agarose gel electrophoresis were also evaluated in a human leukemia HL-60 cell line. The findings revealed that F4 had the highest TPC followed by crude extract, F2, F3 and F1. However, the crude extract had the highest TFC followed by F4, F3, F2, and F1. Depending on the values of $EC_{50}$ and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity, F4 possessed the strongest antioxidant activity while F1 and F2 displayed weak antioxidant activity. Further, incubation HL-60 cells with extract/fractions for 24h caused an inhibition of cell viability in a concentration-dependent manner. F3 and F4 exhibited a high antiproliferative activity with a narrow range of $IC_{50}$ values ($45.9-48.9{\mu}g/ml$). Crude extract exhibited the weakest antiproliferative activity with an $IC_{50}$ value of $314.89{\mu}g/ml$. Analysis of DNA fragmentation displayed DNA degradation in the form of a smear-type pattern upon agarose gel after incubation of HL-60 cells with F3 and F4 for 6 h. Overall, F3 and F4 appear to be good sources of phytochemicals with antioxidant and potential anticancer activities.
The hydrolysis of proteins constitutes an invaluable tool, granting access to a variety of peptide fragments with potentially interesting biological properties. Therefore, a hemoglobin (Hb) hydrolysate of Crocodylus siamensis was generated by digestion under acidic conditions. The antibacterial and antioxidant activities of the Hb hydrolysate were assessed in comparison with intact Hb. A disc diffusion assay revealed that the Hb hydrolysate exhibited antibacterial activity against eight strains of gram-positive bacteria and showed a higher efficacy than intact Hb. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of intact Hb and its hydrolysate was evaluated using ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging assays. The Hb hydrolysate exhibited free radical scavenging rates of 6-32%, whereas intact Hb showed a slightly higher activity. In addition, non-toxicity to human erythrocytes was observed after treatment with quantities of Hb hydrolysate up to $10{\mu}g$. Moreover, active fragmented Hb (P3) was obtained after purifying the Hb hydrolysate by reversed-phase HPLC. Scanning electron microscopy demonstrated the induction of bacterial cell membrane abnormalities after exposure to P3. Antibacterial and antioxidant activities play crucial roles for supporting the wound healing activity. Consequently, an in vivo mice excisional skin wound healing assay was carried out to investigate the effects of intact Hb treatment on wound healing in more detail. The results clearly demonstrate that intact Hb is capable of promoting 75% wound closure within 6 days. These findings imply that intact Hb of C. siamensis and its acid hydrolysate may serve as valuable precursors for food supplementary products benefitting human health.
