Purpose: Toe ulcers have been implicated as a causative factor in diabetic foot amputation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the outcomes of percutaneous needle flexor tenotomies of diabetic claw toes with ulcers or pending ulcers. Materials and Methods: The authors undertook a retrospective chart review between January 2014 and June 2016 to identify those patients who underwent a percutaneous needle flexor tenotomy for diabetic claw toe deformities. We evaluated 54 toes in 42 patients. Twenty-four patients were female and the mean age at the time of operation was 57 years. The mean follow-up time was 11 months. Thirty-four patients (46 toes) had tip toe ulcers or pending ulcers and 8 patients (8 toes) had dorsal pending ulcers. All patients had palpable pulses and good capillary refill. Results: Forty-three of 46 tip toe ulcers (93.5%) healed without significant complications and 8 dorsal ulcers showed no specific changes within 5 weeks. There were no recurrent ulcers at final follow-up. Four patients developed transfer lesion of the adjacent toe and needed subsequent tenotomy. Conclusion: Percutaneous needle tenotomy in an outpatient clinic was an effective and safe method for treating toe ulcers in neuropathic patients to offload the tip of the toe so that ulcer healing could occur.
This study investigated preschoolers' behavior regulation and social adjustment by age and gender and examined relationships between behavior regulation and social adjustment. Behavior regulation was assessed by the Head-to-Toes Task (Cameron et al., 2008; McClelland et al., 2007); social adjustment was evaluated by teachers with the Preschool Adjustment Questionnaire (Jewsuwan et al., 1993). Subjects were 263 children aged 3-6 years. Data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, two-way ANOVA, and partial correlation analysis. Findings showed (1) incremental differences in behavior regulation each year between 3- and 4-year-olds and between 4- and 5-year- olds. (2) Girls exhibited higher levels of behavior regulation and social adjustment than boys. (3) Behavior regulation and social adjustment correlated positively with each other.

Old post burn contractures on feet still remain challenging problem for reconstructive surgeon. A 43-year-old male visited Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital with the complain of foot deformity and difficulties in shoe fitting. His right 4th and 5th toes were inverted at dorsal foot. We released the contracture of 4, 5th metatarsophalangeal joint and lengthened extensor tendon by Z-plasty, and covered the resultant defect with the anterolateral thigh flap. The flap was successful and the deformity was corrected. As there have been few reports on reconstruction of foot dorsum, especially on post burn extension contractures in the toes, we report a rare case of contracture release and coverage by free flap.
One of the most important functions of a biped robot is to walk naturally like human. For the human being, toe is very important joint in order to walk naturally. Thus, for a biped robot, the existence of toe joint much affects gait pattern generation and contributes to natural walking, which is similar to the human gait or faster walking like running. Since a conventional biped robot has the feet which consist of soles without toes, it seems difficult to walk naturally. For realizing the gait to be similar to human one, toes are necessary to the biped robot. In this paper, the effect of the toe joint for gait pattern generation is studied. In order to find the effect of toe joint, a biped r...

In terms of the anatomy and mechanics of the human foot, a flexible robot foot with toes and heel joints is designed for a bipedal walking robot. We suggest three design considerations in determining foot design parameters which are critical for walking stability. Those include the position of the frontal toe, the stiffness of toes and heels, and the position of the ankle joint. Compared with the conventional foot with flat sale, the proposed foot is advantageous for human-like walking due to the inherent structural flexibility and the reasonable parameter values. Simulation results are provided to determine the design parameters and also show that the proposed foot enables smaller energy consumption.

This study was attempted to clarify the characteristics of elderly women's foot shape by examining the various measurements of women over 60 years old as compared with those of women in twenties considered as reference group. The subjects were 321 elderly women and 181 young women. Their right feet were measured directly and indirectly by using scanner and digital camera. The anthropometric measurements were composed of 62 items. They were measured during the months of July and August in 2001. As a result of comparing actual measurements of foot between the two groups, it was found that the elderly women tended to have shorter and lower foot than those among the young women. Among the elderly women, in addition, it was revealed that many deformities related to toes or legs led to the toes concentrated to the central axis of feet resulting in relatively steeper lateral angle of toe, and the heels and legs slanting forwards. As a result of comparing index values of foot between the groups, the elderly women's foot had the relatively wide width and low height in comparison with the length, showing more elliptical flattening than those of the young women. And, the width of the inside was wider than that of the outside, and the toe width was relatively short in comparison with the foot width resulting in severe deformities on the toes or the central axis of foot. Therefore, it was found that there were several deformities including flat foot or deformed toes among elderly women. It is expected that the characteristics of elderly women's foot shown in the results mentioned above will be used as the basic data in designing the footwear for elderly women.
The purpose of this study were to analyze the anthropometric data of feet of Korean women with aging, to categorize the women's foot shapes, and to compare the shoe size according to the foot shapes in order to provide the basic information for more comfortable shoes. Subjects of this study were 181 women over age 20. They were measured with the direct measurement method and the indirect measurement method. 26 items were measured from the right foot and 6 items were taken on foot outline. Factor analysis, cluster analysis, analysis of variance, post-hoc test, and cross tabs were peformed for statistical analysis of the data by SPSS program. There were significant differences in height items, breadth items, girth items, and angle items by subjects' age. The older subjects' feet were wide and thick with big deformity on toes. The arch height of the older ones was low. This implicates that the degree of deformity on toes, the foot ratio, the foot girth, the foot breath and the arch height as well as the foot length are needed to be considered in developing comfortable shoes. Nine foot construction factors were extracted by the factor analysis of anthropometric measurements; foot size factor, heel and instep factor, malleolus lateralis factor, malleolus medialis factor, foot shape factor, shape of toes factor, heel height factor, big toe height factor, and internal factor. On the basis of the cluster analysis, three different foot shapes were categorized. Type 1 was large and wide foot with little deformity on little toe. Type 2 was medium foot with deformation of big toe, and with the lowest arch height. Type 3 was small and narrow foot with the highest arch height. Distribution of shoe size according to the foot shape was analyzed. The ball of foot breath was of wide distribution than the ball of foot girth. This implicates that girth items and breath items of the foot should be enclosed for the same foot length in the shoe sizing system.
Purpose: The objective of this study was to examine the clinical results and effectiveness of resection arthroplasty for correction of lesser toe deformity. Materials and Methods: From January 2000 to November 2012, 92 cases of resection arthroplasty for lesser toe deformity were reviewed. Hammer toe was the most common type of deformity, accounting for 44 toes (33 patients). Hallux valgus was the most common comorbid illness. Second toe was the most commonly affected toe and proximal interphalangeal joint was the most common location of resection arthroplasty (69 toes, 75.0%). We also analyzed the alignment of phalanges using the last follow-up weight bearing radiographic image. The analysis included clinical evaluation with American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) score as well as subjective satisfaction. Results: Flexor tenotomy (19 cases) was the most common combined surgery. Floating toe (4 cases) was the most common complication. The last follow-up alignment of phalanges was better than good in 71 toes (77.2%) in anteroposterior view and in 69 toes (75.0%) in lateral view. Sixty one cases (85.9%) resulted in better satisfaction than 'good' and the final average AOFAS score was 87.4. Conclusion: Resection arthroplasty is a valuable surgical option for treatment of lesser toe deformity, with high patient satisfaction, easy surgical technique and remarkable correction of deformity.

The 4-point bending tests have been performed In order to estimate the effect of TIG-dressing on fatigue strength and fatigue characteristics quantitatively for non load-carrying fillet welded joints subjected to pure bending. As a result of fatigue tests, fatigue strengths of as-welded specimens have satisfied the grade of fatigue strength prescribed in specifications of korea, AASHTO and JSSC. Fatigue strength at 2 million cycles of TIG-dressing specimens have increased compared with as-welded specimens. As the result of beachmark tests, fatigue cracks occurred at several points, where the radius of curvature and flank angle in the weld bead toes were low, and grew as semi-elliptical cracks, then approached to fracture. As a result of finite element analysis, stress concentration factor in weld bead toes has closely related to the flank angle and radius of curvature, and between these, the radius of curvature has more largely affected in stress concentration factor than flank angle. As a result of fracture mechanics approaches, the crack correction factor of test specimens has largely affected on stress gradient correction factor in case a/t is below 0.4. From the relations between stress intensity factor range estimated from FEM analysis and fatigue crack growth rate, fatigue life has been correctly calculated.

In order to let the humanoid robot walk on the uneven terrains, the robot's foot should have the similar structure and function as human's. The intelligent foot should be made up of toes and heel. When it walks on the uneven terrains, the foot's sole senses the force and adjusts foot's position before robot losing his balance. In this paper, the force sensors of robot's intelligent foot for having the similar structure and function like human are developed. The heel 3-axis force/moment sensor and toe force sensors for humanoid robot's intelligent foot is developed, and the characteristic tests of them are carried out. As a result of characteristic test, the interference error of the heel 3-axis force/moment sensor is less than 2.2%. It is thought that the developed force sensors could be used to measure the reaction forces which is applied the toes and the heel of a humanoid robot.
