  • Background: A new admission procedure was introduced to Korea when Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) program was first established in 2011. In the new procedure, applicants are reviewed based on quantitative qualifications, which include Pharmacy Education Eligibility Test (PEET) scores, Test of English for International Communication (TOEIC) scores, and grade point average (GPA), as well as qualitative qualifications such as essay writing, extracurricular activities including volunteer experiences. Purpose: This study aimed to find relationships between entrance qualifications and academic performance of pharmacy students. Method: Entrance qualifications and academic performance of 164 first-year students were analyzed from 2011 to 2013 at Catholic University of Daegu. Other characteristics such as age and gender were also considered in the study. Results: Only GPA and TOEIC scores showed positive Pearson correlation with academic performance, while PEET scores did not. Conclusion: GPA and TOEIC scores could potentially have predictive validity for academic performance in pharmacy school. PEET scores, however, should simply be considered as pre-entrance qualifications, without predictive validity for academic performance.

  • This study examined how well Korean undergraduate students perceived linked or clear English speech and attempted to find areas of difficulty in their English listening caused by phonological variations. Thirty nine undergraduate students participated in listening sessions. They were divided into high and low groups by their TOEIC listening scores. Samples of linked speech included such phonological processes as linking, palatalization, flapping, and deletion. Results showed that the students had more problem perceiving linked speech than perceiving clear speech. Secondly, both the higher and the lower groups scored low on the linked speech. The lower group had more score difference between linked and clear speech. Thirdly, the students' scores increased from the speech with flapping, through deletion, palatalization, to linking. Finally, there was a strong positive correlation between their TOEIC listening scores and the perception scores. Further studies would be desirable on the level of improvement of TOEIC scores by training the students' listening ability using the linked speech.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore factors that directly affect the employment of college graduates. To this end, employment data of graduates of private four-year university in Daegu metropolitan area and Gyeongsangbuk-do province were collected from 2019 to 2021, filtered data using a RapidMiner, and analyzed by applying a decision tree model. As a result of the study, long-term internship for more than 12 weeks, TOEIC score of 787.5 or higher was advantageous for employment, and if there was no TOEIC score, the graduation average score was 3.67 or higher, so the possibility of employment was high. Even if the TOEIC score was low, it was advantageous for employment if participating in the contest and continuous professor counseling, and even if the average graduation score was low, the possibility of employment was high if actively participating in the comparison program. This study can present a job education guide based on actual data to university management and use it to establish policies to support employment of college students.

  • This study investigated the relationship between ego-resilience, Nunchi, self-leadership, and communication competency of Health Majors Students in Studying for TOEIC(HMSST) and analyzed the convergent influence on communication competency. For collection data, this study distributed self-administered questionnaires from November 1 to November 30, 2018 and the questionnaires were distributed to randomly selected 280 health majors students in TOEIC class from colleges located in J area. The survey showed that the communication competency was positively correlated with ego-resilience, Nunchi and self-leadership. The covariance structure analysis showed that the higher ego-resilience, the higher Nunchi and the higher self-leadership tend to increase communication competency. The results of the study indicate that the efforts to increase ego-resilience, Nunchi and self-leadership will improve communication competency of HMSST. These results are expected to be utilized in educational support and mediation to enhance the communication competency among HMSST. In the following study, the research on the additional factors which may influence on communication competency will be needed.

  • The purposes of the study are to introduce and apply an activity that can help improve student-initiated learning on the TOEIC Speaking Test (TOEICST) performance and to see students' attitude toward the activity. Twenty-eight university students in Chungcheong province engaged in learning based on this activity. In the present study, the activity proposed by McCormick and Vercellotti (2013) and Stillwell, Curabba, Alexander, Kidd, Kim, Stone, & Wyle (2010) was modified and adapted[14][19]. The outline of the Task Recording Activity (TRA) consisted of three steps: preparation step, Task Recording Activity step, and evaluation step. As data collection of the study, a survey and students' journal were utilized and qualitatively analyzed. The results showed that student-initiated learning activity could be applied positively not only in communicative lessons, but in TOEICST specific lessons as well. Additionally, participants showed positive attitudes toward self-transcription and self-correction. Some implications of the study are that the TRA can be applied to generate autonomous learners studying for the TOEIC Speaking Test, that the guideline for different proficiency can be developed to help them improve their self-reflection, and that students need to have an active attitude to lead their own learning.

  • This study investigates convergent influence on Self Factors(SF), Stress Factors(STF), Resilience & Control Factors(RCF), Test Anxiety(TA), Learning Flow(LF) and academic burnout among Health College Students in TOEIC class(HCST). The survey was administered to 291 HCST from 1 college located in J area during the period from April 3, 2017 to April 14, 2017. The structured self-administered questionaries were used. With the analysis of covariance structure, we could confirm relationship among the six factors such as SF, STF, RCF, TA, LF and academic burnout. The results of the study indicate that the efforts, to manage these factors, are required to decrease the academic burnout of HCST. Squared multiple correlations, which explain the academic burnout related with the stress from economic pressure and job seeking, test anxiety, learning flow and self factors, were 98.8%. The results are expected to be useful for the development of TOEIC learning curriculum and course to decrease the academic burnout of HCST. In the following study, the analysis about additional factors of influence on academic burnout will be needed.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate whether or not the use of the Korean alphabet increased the accuracy of English sentences Korean university students produced in dictation. The students were divided into three categories, beginning, intermediate, and advanced, based on the listening comprehension scores of a practice TOEIC test. The total population of 120 students were divided into two groups, control and experiment. In the first testing, the experiment group transcribed the English utterances on a practice TOEIC tape into phonological writing in Korean and then later changed the Korean writing into English words and sentences. In the second testing, the control group became the experiment group and used the Korean alphabet in transcribing the English sounds. Statistically significant differences were found in the improvement of accuracy in dictation when the Korean alphabet was used, especially for the beginning and intermediate students. By using the Korean alphabet as the phonological representation of the sounds, the students in the experiment group produced more accurate English words than the control group who went directly from the English utterances to writing in English. Statistically significant results were not produced for the advanced students. The significance of the present study relates to the need to add to the paucity of available data on the use of the Korean alphabet in teaching listening comprehension.

  • The scores of TOEFL, TOEIC and TEPS have been increasingly used for many purposes in Korea In particular, these test scores are being used as a measure of the test-takers' overall communicative competence. Nonetheless, few studies have been conducted that investigate the validity of the test scores used for this purpose. As a preliminary step to explore the validity of the test scores, we conducted a small scale study by comparing 30 university students' scores in TOEFL, TOElC and TEPS with their class performances in English conversation and composition courses. The correlations between the test scores and the grade point averages of the courses show that the test scores are much harder to use as a valid measure of test-takers' overall communicative competence than usually thought to be and that the score in TOEFL is, nonetheless, a more reliable measure than the ones in the other tests. Although tins study has a few limitations such as the small number of participants, the homogeneity of the sample as a group, etc, it provides some insight into the use of the three tests for measurement of overall communicative proficiency and suggests need for conducting further validation studies in these areas.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate dichotic listening, that is, whether the left and right ears have different functionalities in actual listening. Unlike previous studies, which used short words or a list of two or three numbers, these researchers investigated more comprehensive listening ability using the Toeic listening test. Sixty-three university students participated in this study. The subjects took three tests in total: one using only the right ear, another using the left ear, and the third using both. T-analysis of SPSS on the data revealed that there is a significant difference between the test results with only the right or left ear and the ones with both ears. So we cannot find right-ear priority in this study. We can see that in comprehensive listening, right hemisphere plays an important role as well as left hemisphere. When grouped according to language ability, test result of low group is the same as the total test result. However, in high group there is no significant difference between the test results with left ear and the results with both ears in high group. In mid group there is no significant difference between the test results with right ear and the results with both ears. The different functionalities of left and right ears and suggestions for future research are presented.

  • This study investigated the effects of dictation practice, in terms of listening proficiency and the use of listening strategy. The research was implemented for 15 weeks with 89 freshmen and sophomores at a Korean university. The subjects were divided into an experimental group and a control group. All conditions were the same in both groups, except that the experimental group had dictation practice on a regular basis in their listening classes through one semester. For the purpose of the study, two research questions were set; 1) Does dictation practice improve listening proficiency? 2) What are the differences in the use of listening strategies between the two groups? Does dictation practice make the participants use different listening strategies? A sample TOEIC listening test was conducted as a pre-test and post-test. A questionnaire was used to find out the differences in the use of listening strategies between the two groups. The results of this study reveal that there was no statistically difference in improvement between the two groups; however, the experimental group scored much higher on the post-test than the pre-test compared with the control group. In regard to listening strategies, among 6 listening strategies, the use of metacognitive listening strategies had a significant difference between the two groups. On the basis of the results, the study suggested some guidelines for dictation practice in EFL listening classes and called for more studies on its effects.
