  • The prediction performance of B-RISK was evaluated for the fire behaviors of combustibles in a compartment using Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). First of all, to predict the heat release rate (HRR) for two combustible sets, the HRR for one combustible set and the design fire curve were used as input values for B-RISK. Comparing results of B-RISK calculations with experimental data for two combustible sets, it was found that B-RISK results predicted insufficiently for fire growth rate of experimental data but there was good agreement for maximum HRR and total HRR with the experimental data. And the B-RISK results were used for input values of FDS to evaluate the fire behaviors of B-RISK results. Comparing results of FDS calculations with experimental data, the simulation results showed that the temperature and concentrations of O2, CO2 in the fire growth phase were different from the experimental data. However, when using the B-RISK result for percentile 70%, the simulation results sufficiently predicted the overall fire behaviors.

  • The single-crystal structure of fully dehydrated partially $Li^+$-exchanged zeolite Y, ${\mid}Li_{50}Na_{25}{\mid}[Si_{117}Al_{75}O_{384}]$-FAU, was determined by single-crystal synchrotron X-ray diffraction techniques in the cubic space group $Fd\bar{3}m$ at 100(1) K. Ion exchange was accomplished by flowing stream of 0.1 M aqueous $LiNO_3$ for 2 days at 293 K, followed by vacuum dehydration at 623 K and $1{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr for 2 days. The structure was refined using all intensities to the final error indices (using only the 801 reflections with ($F_o$ > $4{\sigma}(F_o)$) $R_1/R_2=0.043/0.140$. The 50 $Li^+$ ions per unit cell are found at three different crystallographic sites. The 19 $Li^+$ ions occupy at site I' in the sodalite cavity: the $Li^+$ ions are recessed 0.30 ${\AA}$ into the sodalite cavity from their 3-oxygens plane (Li-O = 1.926(5) ${\AA}$ and $O-Li-O=117.7(3)^{\circ}$). The 20 $Li^+$ ions are found at site II in the supercage, being recessed 0.23 ${\AA}$ into the supercage (Li-O = 2.038(5) ${\AA}$ and $O-Li-O=118.7(3)^{\circ}$). Site III' positions are occupied by 11 $Li^+$ ions: these $Li^+$ ions bind strongly to one oxygen atom (Li-O = 2.00(8) ${\AA}$). About 25 $Na^+$ ions per unit cell are found at four different crystallographic sites: 4 $Na^+$ ions are at site I, 5 at site I', 12 at site II, and the remaining 4 at site III'.

  • The present study has been conducted to predict the mass burning flux of methanol pool fire using liquid vaporization model in FDS and examine the effect of thermal properties of liquid fuel such as radiative fraction and mean absorption coefficient. A series of calculation for the pool diameter of 5 cm to 200 cm were performed and the size of computational domain was determined by the scale of the pool diameter. The reference grid size was determined by the grid sensitivity analysis and the computational grids consisted of approximately 750,000 cells. For the methanol pool fire, the mass burning flux predicted by liquid vaporization model of FDS followed the trend of transient characteristics as a function of pool diameter and showed good agreement within measurement uncertainty range of previous studies. The mass burning flux increased with increasing the radiative fraction and the mean absorption coefficient greatly affected on relatively small pool diameter.

  • Large Eddy Simulation (LES) was peformed for the backdraft occurred in a compartment filled with high-temperature methane fuel using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS) of version 6. The prediction performance of FDS, adopted the Eddy Dissipation Concept (EDC) combustion model with five different chemical reaction mechanisms, was evaluated. The temporal distributions of temperature, fuel mass fraction, velocity and pressure were discussed with numerical results and the pressure variation in time was compared with that of previous experiment. The FDS adopted the EDC model showed the possibility of LES for the backdraft phenomena. However, the prediction performance of the LES with EDC model strongly depended on the chemical reaction mechanism considered. It is necessary that the suitability of the chemical reaction mechanism should be validated in advance for LES with the FDS v6 to be applied to the simulation of backdraft.

  • Dementia once occurred is known to be mostly irreversible but can be treated only if it is detected early; especially vascular Dementia. Thus, in this paper we have developed Dementia diagnosis and care application through inter-working between biometric sensors and smart phone. With developing serious game for the demented elderly, we proposed ons-stop solution for Dementia; smart-phone application with diagnosis, prevention and mitigation of Dementia. Since the proposed game for mitigating Dementia requires sense of space and balance using both arms instead of operating simple arrow button, a treatment effect for Dementia will be doubled. If we tried to forestall, ease and cure Dementia with the proposed application. the social losses from Dementia would be minimized as a result.

  • The prediction performance of design fire curves was evaluated using a Fire dynamics simulator (FDS) for a solid fuel fire in a building space by comparing the results with experimental data. EDC 2-step mixing controlled combustion model was used in the FDS simulations and the previously suggested 2-stage design fire (TDF), Quadratic and Exponential design fire curves were used as the FDS inputs. The simulation results showed that smoke propagation in the building space was significantly affected by the design fire curves. The predictions of simulations using design fire curves for the experimental temperatures in the building space were reasonable, but the TDF was found to be the most acceptable for predicting temperature. The predictions with each design fire curve of species concentrations showed insufficient agreement with the experiments. This suggests that the combustion model used in this study was not optimized for the simulation of a solid fuel fire, and additional studies will be needed to examine the combustion model on the FDS prediction of solid fires.

  • This study investigated numerically the influences of fire curtain and natural smoke vent area on smoke movement in the stage fire of a theater using FDS (Fire Dynamics Simulator). The dimension of the theater stage was 31 m in width, 34 m in depth, and 32 m in height. The area ratios between the natural smoke vent and stage were approximately 10%, 8%, 5%, and 1%. The gap distance between the fire curtain and proscenium wall was 0.5 m. The fire curtain and natural smoke vent area were observed to affect significantly the behavior of smoke movement to the auditorium and the mass flow rates of inflow and outflow through the natural smoke vent and proscenium opening. In addition, under the same natural smoke vent area, the pressure in the stage with a fire curtain was lower than that without a fire curtain.

  • Fire damage time in high-rise buildings and wildland fire increasing every year. The use of high-pressure fire pumps is required to effectively extinguish fires. Reflecting the curvature effect of the fire hose occurring at the actual fire fighting site, this study provides a database of pressure drop, discharge velocity and maximum discharge height through C FD numerical analysis and it can provide using standards for fire extinguishing. Two Reynolds numbers of 200000 and 400000 were numerically analyzed at 0° -180° bending with water of 25℃ as a working fluid in hoses with a diameter of 65mm, a length of 15m, and a radius of curvature of 130mm. Realizable k-ε turbulence model was used and standard wall function was used. The pressure drop increases as the bending angle increases, and the maximum value at 90° and then decreases. The increasing rate is greater than the decrease. The velocity of the secondary flow also decreases after having the maximum value at 90°. The decreasing rate is greater than the increase. The turbulent kinetic energy increases to 120° and decreases with the maximum value. Pressure drop, velocity of the secondary flow, and turbulence kinetic energy are measured larger in the second bending region than in the first bending region.

  • Kinetic studies using stirred-flow methods were conducted with the Luisiana soil at three pH levels(pH 5, 6.5, and 8) and three temperature levels(10, 25, and $40^{\circ}C$) to explore effects on the rate of silica retention and release and to find out reaction mechanisms. In this study the maximum silica retention could not be obtained for long enough experimental time. The silica sorption isorption was C type fitted well to Freundlich equation. The pH of the soil suspension increased by the silica release process at low pH treatments(pH 5 and 6.5), while decreased at high pH treatment(pH 8). From the above findings It can be deduced that the mechanism of silica retention is a multilayer forming process to change the ligand form depending on pH condition. In the proposed mechanism the sorbed silica provide new binding sites for additional sorption of silica, while the activation energy for the formation of subsequent layers increases correspondingly. The silica retention and release process were well described by first-order and parabolic diffusion equation. However, clear interpretation for silica sorption mechanism using these equations could not be made. The validity of the fraction term (Fa and Fd) included in first-order and parabolic diffusion equation requires further examinations because the temperature effect on apparent rate constant shows no constant trends among temperature treatments, while there was a good trend in Elovich and modified Freundlich equation where the fraction term was not included.
