  • The possibility of manufacturing titanium hollow cylinder tank for ramjet engine was demonstrated with superplastic forming of subscale article. An innovative manufacturing method to produce complex configuration from titanium multi-sheets by low hydrostatic pressure was presented. Finite element analysis on superplastic blow forming process has been carried out in order to improve the forming process when manufacturing subscale hollow cylinder structure using Ti-6Al-4V multi-sheets. The simulation focused on the reduction of forming time and obtaining finally required shape throughout investigating the deformation mode of sheet according to the forming conditions and die geometry. From pre-sized titanium sheets, near net shape of hollow cylinder tank is obtained by superplastic blow forming conducted using gas pressure of 15bar at 1148K. The result shows that the manufacturing method with superplastic forming of multi-sheets of titanium alloy has been successful for near net shape forming of subscale hollow cylinder tank of ramjet engine.

  • Titanium micro-mesh implants are widely used in orbital wall reconstructions because they have several advantageous characteristics. However, the rough and irregular marginal spurs of the cut edges of the titanium mesh sheet impede the efficacious and minimally traumatic insertion of the implant, because these spurs may catch or hook the orbital soft tissue, skin, or conjunctiva during the insertion procedure. In order to prevent this problem, we developed an easy method of inserting a titanium micro-mesh, in which it is wrapped with the aseptic transparent plastic film that is used to pack surgical instruments or is attached to one side of the inner suture package. Fifty-four patients underwent orbital wall reconstruction using a transconjunctival or transcutaneous approach. The wrapped implant was easily inserted without catching or injuring the orbital soft tissue, skin, or conjunctiva. In most cases, the implant was inserted in one attempt. Postoperative computed tomographic scans showed excellent placement of the titanium micro-mesh and adequate anatomic reconstruction of the orbital walls. This wrapping insertion method may be useful for making the insertion of titanium micro-mesh implants in the reconstruction of orbital wall fractures easier and less traumatic.

  • This study was performed bead welding of pure titanium by using fiber laser. Since titanium is very sensitive to oxidation and nitriding during welding, it is important to compose the shielding equipment compared with different material. Thus side and coaxial shield nozzle, rail and chamber type shielding equipment are widely used to protect effectively the weld during welding. Experiments were performed by changing nozzle angle and distance using side and coaxial shield nozzle. The bead colors of gold, brown, blue, purple and yellowish white were obtained by changing variables of shield nozzle, and then its weldability was investigated. As experiment result, sound and not brominated beads were formed when side nozzle angle and distance were respectively $45^{\circ}$ and 10 mm.

  • In the automotive industry hydroforming of sheet metal pairs have received special attention because materials for various sheet metal components of vehicles have changed into the high strength steel, aluminum, and titanium blank having low formability. Uniform deformation over the whole region is a main advantage in the sheet hydroforming process. Because upper and lower parts could be produced simultaneously with one tool, hydroforming of sheet metal pairs is competitive in reducing the lead-time and development cost. In this paper, the multi-stage hydroforming process of sheet pair is proposed in order to increase the formability of a structural part like the oil pan shape. The upper die for forming oil pan shape is divided into two parts which can move separately. By the finite element simulation, the design parameters such as geometry of the tool and detailed specification of hydraulic pump were calculated and verified. For the strict comparison of the proposed process, the blank holding force is kept to a constant value during deformation by hydraulic valve. The deformed shape and strain distribution of the manufactured parts with the proposed process are compared with the results of simulation. In the multi-stage hydroforming process, maximum thickness strain was improved by more than 30 percent.

17[Y.S. Kim, J.H. In, Korean Acadmia-Ind. Coop. Soc.,(be in print), 2016] 의 연구에서 제안한 가공경화식으로 잘 핏팅됨을 알 수 있었다.

  • Background The endoscopic transnasal approach is widely used for reconstructing the medial orbital wall by filling it with a silicone sheet or Merocel, but this technique has the disadvantage of retaining the packing for a long time. To overcome this drawback, a method of positioning an absorbable plate in the orbit has been introduced, but there is a risk of defect recurrence after the plate is absorbed. Here, the authors report the results of a novel surgical technique of placing a nonabsorbable titanium mesh with porous polyethylene into the orbit through the endoscopic transnasal approach. Methods Fourteen patients underwent surgery using the endoscopic transnasal approach. Preoperative computed tomography (CT) was used to calculate the size of the bone defect due to the fracture, and the titanium mesh was designed to be shorter than the anteroposterior length of the defect and longer than its height. The titanium mesh was inserted into the orbit under an endoscopic view. The authors then confirmed that the titanium mesh supported the orbital contents by pressing the eyeball and finished the operation. Immediately after surgery, CT results were evaluated. Results Postoperative CT scans confirmed that the titanium mesh was well-inserted and in the correct position. All patients were discharged without any complications. Conclusions We obtained satisfactory results by inserting a titanium mesh with porous polyethylene into the orbit via the transnasal approach endoscopically.

  • Main function of the Press forming Machine is the forming for plates. The head of the Press forming machine consist of several parts. It was named Press forming-contraction and Press forming_expansion according to formability of plates. Aluminium and Titanum plates are forming by using the Press forming machine. In this study, we analyzed sheet metal forming including plastic deformation and the contact pressure in the bearing. Finite element analysis results of Press forming-contraction and Press forming_expansion show the similar results of the actual specimen plates and the bearing contact pressures show the acceptable level of stress in both aluminum and titanium specimens.
