  • Conventional interproximal stripping using abrasive strips is normally limited to the anterior teeth. The strips must be forced between the contact points of the teeth creating patient discomfort and the risk of cutting gingival tissue. Air-rotor stripping(ARS) with Essix anterior anchor enables the clinician to remove a precise amount of interproximal enamel to create space, primarily in the buccal quadrants, for aligning or retracting teeth. In selected cases, ARS can resolve significant differences in ratios of tooth site to arch length, and the technique can become an alternative to extraction or expansion. ARS can create substantially more space than that is usually obtained by conventional interproximal stripping, and it can be done at any time during treatment without discomfort to the patient and without adversely affecting the function of the dentition, interocclusal relations, or tooth form.

  • Benzylisoquinoline alkaloids are a diverse group of natural products that include many pharmacologically active compounds produced in a limited number of plant families. Despite their complexity, intensive biochemical research has extended our knowledge of the chemistry and enzymology of many important benzylisoquinoline alkaloid pathways, such as those leading to the analgesic drugs morphine and codeine, and the antibiotics sanguinarine and berberine. The use of cultured plant cells as an experimental system has facilitated the identification and characterization of more than 30 benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthetic enzymes, and the molecular cloning of the genes that encode at least 8 of these enzymes. The recent expansion of biochemical and molecular technologies has creat-ed unique opportunities to dissect the mechanisms involved in the regulation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis in plants. Research has suggested that product accumulation is controlled by the developmental and inducible regulation of several benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthetic genes, and by the subcellular compartmentation of biosynthetic enzymes and the intracellular localization and trafficking of pathway intermediates. In this paper, we review our current understanding of the biochemistry, cell biology, and molecular regulation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid biosynthesis in plants. We also summarize our own research activities, especially those related to the establishment of protocols for the genetic transformation of benzylisoquinoline alkaloid-producing species, and the development of metabolic engineering strategies in these plants.

  • The internal temperature of an operating room had to keep within $20^{\circ}C$. However, the doctor who is wearing operating gown and mask caused to rise temperature because of the thermal occurrence of dental LED light source. At first, the surgery environment is getting worse. And then last, it would increase bleeding rate by the expansion of patient's exposured blood vessel. A surgical operator can distribute the patient's tissue through such surgery environment, exactly. It can do accurate surgery. So, it gave to effect that surgical operator's eye condition is getting better and it could keep a mutual assistance system. For this research, we develop the LED dental light source module of high color rendition. It performed simulation for replacing established the method of Halogen lamp and Plazma lamp of light source. We analyzed intensity of illumination and the change of viability by changing the height of light source module.

  • Objective: Adipose tissue plays a key role in the development of obesity and diabetes. We previously reported that lignosulfonic acid suppresses the rise in blood glucose levels through the inhibition of ${\alpha}$-glucosidase activity and intestinal glucose absorption. The purpose of this study is to examine further biological activities of lignosulfonic acid. Methods: In this study, we examined the effect of lignosulfonic acid on differentiation of 3T3-L1 cells. Results: While lignosulfonic acid inhibited proliferation (mitotic clonal expansion) after induction of differentiation, lignosulfonic acid significantly increased the size of accumulated lipid droplets in the cells. Semi-quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis showed that lignosulfonic acid increased the expression of the adipogenic transcription factor, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma ($PPAR{\gamma}$), leading to increased glucose transporter 4 (Glut-4) expression and 2-deoxyglucose uptake in differentiated 3T3-L1 cells. Additionally, feeding lignosulfonic acid to diabetic KK-Ay mice suppressed increase of blood glucose level. Conclusion: Lignosulfonic acid may be useful as a functional anti-diabetic component of food.

  • The progression of spinal tuberculosis is usually slow and insidious, and its main symptom, backache, is nonspecific. Considerable delay in diagnosis may occur before an infectious process is considered. Even when a diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis is considered, it may be difficult to confirm. Radiological findings indicative of tuberculosis are involvement of the vertebral bodies on either side of the disc, subligamentous spread, abscess formation and collection and expansion of granulation tissue adjacent to the vertebral body, relative sparing of the disc space and calcification within a paravertebral abscess. We report two patients with spinal tuberculosis who had nonspecific backache and received a delayed diagnosis for several months or years.

  • Cementoblastoma is a benign ectomesenchymal odontogenic neoplasm that forms a mass of cementum or cementum-like tissue continuous with the tooth root. Cementoblastoma represents 1% to 6.2% of all odontogenic tumors, and occurs more than 75% arise in the mandible, with most cases arising in the molar and premolar regions. About 75% arises before the age of 30. Radiographically, it appears as a radiopaque mass with a thin radiolucent rim attached to the roots of a tooth. The recurrence rate is 37% in the current study and cortical expansion and perforation of the cortex are common findings in lesions that subsequently recurred. It is apparent that recurrence rate depends largely on the completeness of removal than any other factor. Here we present a 20 year old, female case of an unusual multiple recurrent cementoblastoma around a previous lesion which had been surgically excised 2 years ago.

  • The use of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) in cell-based therapy has attracted extensive interest in the field of regenerative medicine, and it shows applications to numerous incurable diseases. hMSCs show several superior properties for therapeutic use compared to other types of stem cells. Different cell types are discussed in terms of their advantages and disadvantages, with focus on the characteristics of hMSCs. hMSCs can proliferate readily and produce differentiated cells that can substitute for the targeted affected tissue. To maximize the therapeutic effects of hMSCs, a substantial number of these cells are essential, requiring extensive ex vivo cell expansion. However, hMSCs have a limited lifespan in an in vitro culture condition. The senescence of hMSCs is a double-edged sword from the viewpoint of clinical applications. Although their limited cell proliferation potency protects them from malignant transformation after transplantation, senescence can alter various cell functions including proliferation, differentiation, and migration, that are essential for their therapeutic efficacy. Numerous trials to overcome the limited lifespan of mesenchymal stem cells are discussed.

  • Fibrous dysplasia(FD) of the bone is a slowly progressive, benign disease of unknown cause where normal architectures are replaced with fibrous and osteoid tissue. FD of the maxilla usually manifests as a bony enlargement with painless swelling and bone deformity, contouring to facial asymmetry. The lesion may involve the nasal fossae, orbits, or alveolus bone, causing diverse functional disturbance. Treatment options range from shaving to total maxillectomy and reconstruction depending on the presenting symptoms. Shaving, partial maxillectomy and maxillary sinus formation was performed in 5 patients with fibrous dysplasia in the past 2 years. Follow up period ranged from 1 month to 11 months. Aesthetic appearance, CT findings, and relief from symptoms were compared. In all patients, facial asymmetry was restored to symmetry and nasal obstructive symptoms were improved. With this procedure, expansion of the lesion will be controlled until puberty, preventing the development of new functional disturbances. After puberty, no further treatment can be anticipated due to the growth arrest inherent to the disease.

  • Post-traumatic enophthalmos is a relatively common problem following orbitozygomatic fractures. Bony-volume expansion and soft tissue atrophy are considered the main etiological causes of this condition. Enophthalmos is corrected mostly through reducing the enlarged orbit volume. Autogenous graft and various alloplastic materials are used for this purpose. Porous polyethylene is highly biocompatible, durable, and remarkably stable. Also, the titanium plate embedded in a porous polyethylene sheet provides radiographic visibility and increased sheet strength and contour retention. We present experiences of titanium reinforced porous polyethylene for correction of the traumatic enophthalmos with literature review.

  • Few cases of florid osseous dysplasia has been described as a condition that characteristically affects the jaws. It usually manifests as multiple radiopaque masses distributed throughout the jaws. Confusion exists about the relationship of florid osseous dysplasia, gigantiform cementoma, chronic sclersing osteomyelitis, sclerosing osteitis or multiple enostosis. Authors experienced a case of florid osseous dysplasia of the jaws in 52-year-old female on the basis of clinical, radiographic and histopathologic findings. The characteristic features are as follows : 1. In clinical examination, there was no clinical sign and symptoms except extracted area. And there was no facial asymmetry. 2. Radiograms show round or lobular dense radiopaque masses surrounded by radiolucent bands in lower molar teeth area bilaterally. And slight increased radiopacities in maxillary molar teeth area bilaterally. There was no expansion or thinning of buccal and lingual cortical bones. There is no displacement or resorption of involved teeth. In right side of mandible, mandibular canal is displaced inferiorly due to mass. 3. Photomicrograms show densely mineralized sclerotic acellular masses with empty lacunae. Pattern is suggestive of cementum, although it could be considered sclerotic bone. In the periphery, lesion consisting of moderately cellular fibrous tissue in which globular calcified products are deposited.
