  • A method for induction of multiple shoots using cotyledonary nodes and shoot tips of Macrotyloma uniflorum (Lam.) Verdc. was described. The experiment was conducted in which shoot induction was noticed on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium supplemented with different concentrations and combinations of four cytokinins (KIN, 2iP, Ads, BAP). These multiple shoots were later developed into normal shoots. The highest rate of shoot proliferation came from MS medium added with BAP 1.5 mg/L. The multiple shoot buds were subcultured into MS medium with BAP (0.5-1.5 mg/L) along with Ads (1.0 mg/L) and GA$_3$ (0.5 mg/L), which gave rise to the highest frequency of shoot proliferation and elongation. The shoots were rooted on MS medium supplemented with 1.75 mg/L IBA.

  • Soft tissue expansion is widely used technique in oral & maxillofacial reconstruction and provide new method of reconstruction in posttraumatic alopecia, post burn, wide scar, congenital deformity, benign tumor, tattoo, etc. Expanded tissue flaps have the advantage of increased vascularity, proximity to the defect, and similarity of color and texture. They also preclude the need to advance flaps from distant sites. Tissue expansion can be used to form a well vascularized cavity to accomodate and nourish bone grafts. The following report describes the uses of tissue expanders by allowing bone grafting to correct both soft and bony defects of mandibular region

  • The nose, a striking features of the human face, is regarded by many clinicians as the keystone of facial esthetics. Clinically, as the treatment of a dentofacial deformity, the soft tissue changes that occurred normally with movement of the skeletal bases. Changes of the soft tissue in the maxillary orthognathic surgery are widening of alar base, elevated nasal tip and flattening of upper lip. In addition, soft tissue change is difficult to predict, it has considerable variability in the response of soft tissue. We reviewed patients who received Le Fort I advancement osteotomy in our department and analysed preoperative and postoperative alar base width, nasal height in clinical measurement and cephalometry and patient's satisfaction of postoperative nasal appearance.

  • A pressure sore wound is often extensive or complicated by local infection involving adjacent soft tissue and bone. In this case, a regional flap after simple debridement is not adequate. Here, we present a case of an extensive pressure sore in the sacral area with deep tissue infection. A 43-year-old female patient with a complicated sore with deep tissue infection had a presacral abscess, an iliopsoas abscess, and an epidural abscess in the lumbar spine. After a multidisciplinary approach performed in stages, the infection had subsided and removal of the devitalized tissue was possible. The large soft tissue defect with significant depth was reconstructed with a free latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous flap, which was expected to act as a local barrier from vertical infection and provide tensionless skin coverage upon hip flexion. The extensive sacral sore was treated effectively without complication, and the deep tissue infection completely resolved. There was no evidence of donor site morbidity, and wheelchair ambulation was possible by a month after surgery.

  • Open calcaneal fracture with more than lateral half of bone loss and soft tissue defect occurred in 17 year-old male patient due to motor vehicle accident. Soft tissue defect included heel pad, peroneal tendon. Bone loss involved mainly most part of inferior tuberosity but not subtalar joint. Open dressing and debridement were done daily in operating room and antibiotics administration was started. After granulation tissue formed, femoral head allograft was performed and fixed with 6.0 mm screws to replace bone defect. Soft tissue defect was covered with latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous free flap. No sign of infection nor major osteolysis was observed in 15 months follow up period. Soft tissue defect was covered with latissimus dorsi musculocutaneous free flap.

  • A mucogingival grafting procedure has been developed to cover denuded root surface. The subepithelial connective tissue graft technique is very predictable and allows for a good esthetic results and minimum patient discomfort on the palate. However, in areas where there is a lack of vestibular depth and keratinized attached tissue, the presence of frena or heavy muscle attachment, covering the connective tissue graft with a mucosal flap is very difficult. The purpose of this study is to evaluate an alternative technique of root coverage using the free connective tissue graft. The results were as follows: 1. Probing depths didn't seem to vary significantly from the preoperative to postoperative period. 2. The amount of keratinized tissue showed an increase of $5.9{\pm}0.97mm$ from the preoperative level. 3. Total clinical exposed root coverage increase 72.2% compare with preoperative level. 4. The shrinkage from gingival margin is $4.2{\pm}1.15mm$ and the mean shrinkage rate is 40.1%. 5. The depth of the vestibule increased with the average distance from cementoenamel junction to mucogingival junction being $7.4{\pm}1.65mm$.

  • In vitro grown microtubers of potato (cv Jaju) were used for introduction of herbicide resistance gene using bombardment with DNA-coated particles. The apical shoot-tip area of newly sprouted microtubers were intensively bombarded. After bombardment, microtubers were germinated and transplanted in a greenhouse. Northern blot analysis indicated that bar gene was expressed in two plantlets. After 5 weeks of growing, commercial herbicide Basta was sprayed to screen the resistant plants. All untransformed potato plants died after 7 days while two transgenic plants survived.

  • Soft tissue sarcomas are malignant tumors that arise in the extraskeletal connective tissues of the body. And the clinical behavior of soft tissue sarcomas is characterized by a tendency to extensively invade surrounding soft tissues as well as early metastatic dissemination. Difficulties were encounted when soft tissue sarcomas invade the major vessels. There are a few reprots about the reconstruction of the major vessels after resection of soft tissue sarcomas. We have treated 3 cases of the soft tissue sarcomas involving the major artery. After marginal excision of the tumor mass, the involved major artery was reconstructed with Gortex artificial vessel graft and we could salvage the patient's extremity.
