Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate whether labial tooth inclination and alveolar bone loss affect the moment per unit of force ($M_t/F$) in controlled tipping and consequent stresses on the periodontal ligament (PDL). Methods: Three-dimensional models (n = 20) of maxillary central incisors were created with different labial inclinations ($5^{\circ}$, $10^{\circ}$, $15^{\circ}$, and $20^{\circ}$) and different amounts of alveolar bone loss (0, 2, 4, and 6 mm). The $M_t/F$ necessary for controlled tipping ($M_t/F_{cont}$) and the principal stresses on the PDL were calculated for each model separately in a finite element analysis. Results: As labial inclination increased, $M_t/F_{cont}$ and the length of the moment arm decreased. In contrast, increased alveolar bone loss caused increases in $M_t/F_{cont}$ and the length of the moment arm. When $M_t/F$ was near $M_t/F_{cont}$, increases in Mt/F caused compressive stresses to move from a predominantly labial apical region to a palatal apical position, and tensile stresses in the labial area moved from a cervical position to a mid-root position. Although controlled tipping was applied to the incisors, increases in alveolar bone loss and labial tooth inclination caused increases in maximum compressive and tensile stresses at the root apices. Conclusions: Increases in alveolar bone loss and labial tooth inclination caused increases in stresses that might cause root resorption at the root apex, despite the application of controlled tipping to the incisors.

Improvement of old-fashioned rain gauge systems for automatic, timely, continuous, and accurate precipitation observation is highly essential for weather/climate prediction and natural hazards early warning, since the occurrence frequency and intensity of heavy and extreme precipitation events (especially floods) are recently getting more increase and severe worldwide due to climate change. Although rain gauge accuracy of 0.1 mm is recommended by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), the traditional rain gauges in both weighting and tipping bucket types are often unable to meet that demand due to several existing technical limitations together with higher production and maintenance costs. Therefore, we aim to introduce a newly developed and cost-effective hybrid rain gauge system at 0.1 mm accuracy that combines advantages of weighting and tipping bucket types for continuous, automatic, and accurate precipitation observation, where the errors from long-term load cells and external environmental sources (e.g., winds) can be removed via an automatic drainage system and artificial intelligence-based data quality control procedure. Our rain gauge system consists of an instrument unit for measuring precipitation, a communication unit for transmitting and receiving measured precipitation signals, and a database unit for storing, processing, and analyzing precipitation data. This newly developed rain gauge was designed according to the weather instrument criteria, where precipitation amounts filled into the tipping bucket are measured considering the receiver's diameter, the maximum measurement of precipitation, drainage time, and the conductivity marking. Moreover, it is also designed to transmit the measured precipitation data stored in the PCB through RS232, RS485, and TCP/IP, together with connecting to the data logger to enable data collection and analysis based on user needs. Preliminary results from a comparison with an existing 1.0-mm tipping bucket rain gauge indicated that our developed rain gauge has an excellent performance in continuous precipitation observation with higher measurement accuracy, more correct precipitation days observed (120 days), and a lower error of roughly 27 mm occurred during the measurement period.

Because the rain gauges of tipping bucket type can easily use the digital signal, the rain gauges are widely used for the meteorological observation. In general, the resolution of rain gauges of tipping bucket type can be categorized by the 0.1mm, 0.5mm, and 1.0mm classes. But, the error of the tipping bucket rain gauges is made by the intensity of rainfalls and is expected to make the standard calibration method for error measurement. Thus, we developed the hardware of standard calibration facility for rain gauges by weighting measurement method and proposed the standard procedure by rainfall intensity in this study Also, we calculated the uncertainty for the rainfall intensity and obtained useful result through the proposed calibration method.
The aim of this study were to measure and compare the stress level on three type brackets and each other material (stainless steel, ceramic) with tipping and torquing forces by using the finite element analysis and to design biomechanically favorable brackets. For this study, three kinds of brackets were selected(A:Transcend-RMO, B:Signature-Unitek, C:PAW: plain archwire appliance-applied for a patent in Yonsei Udiversity). The slot size of bracket was 0.022inch and the size of archwire was 0.0175x0.025inch and taper shaped archwire was used in PAW. Loading force in tipping was 4.27N and torquing force was 32.858N applied by archwire torsion with 19.7degree and 11.3 degree in C type bracket. The conclusions were that (1) The finite element method proved to be a useful tool in the stress analysis of orthodontic bracket subjected to various forces. (2) With tipping, the stresses were concentrated at the gingival wall of the wire slot where it meets the mesial bracket surface and the incisal wall of the wire slot where it meets the distal bracket surface and with torquing, the stresses were concentrated at the junction of the gingival or incisal wall and base of the slot. (3) The maximum stress value was higher in torquing force than tipping force and therefore it is desirable to design on the basis of torquing force. (4) It was considered that the change in material might be affect on the diminish of stress value in the place of stess concentration. (5) The maximum stress value was highest on PAW bracket when the tipping and torquing force was applied and therefore it would be desirable to use mechanically favorable material on PAW bracket.

The cigarette ventilation affects not only the amount of tar and nicotine delivery by a cigarette, but also the composition of the smoke. Therefore, it is important to stabilize of variability in cigarette ventilation that would be affected by changes in cigarette components. This work was conducted to determine the major factors that influence the cigarette ventilation and also to provide fundamental informations for improving the uniformity of cigarette performances. To evaluate the effect of cigarette ventilation as a dependant variable, the three independent factors were the air permeability of plugwrap, tipping paper and the filter pressure drop. We determined the effect of paper permeability on ventilation variability and the optimum condition in combinations of independent factors. The mean of cigarette ventilation was increased as plugwrap permeability increases, particularly at 26,000 CU. However, it was exhibited that standard deviation and coefficient of variation of the cigarette ventilation were decreased with increasing plugwrap permeability. At the 600 CU and 1,200 CU of tipping paper permeability, process capability index (Cp) of the cigarette ventilation increased as plugwrap permeability increases. Following the optimum condition of cigarette ventilation induced by fitted regression equation, one was to optimize 50% ventilation level is by combination with plugwrap permeability of 16,000 CU, tipping paper permeability of 810 CU, filter pressure drop of 319 mm$H_2O$, respectively.
This study was performed, by Finite Element Method, to evaluate the stress distribution on the periodontal tissue according to activation of the various closing loops and to predict the pattern of movement of maxillary incisors. At the same time, bull loop, key-hole loop, T-loop, combination loop and asymmetrical T-loop which were used for retraction of maxillary incisors was analysed by Finite Element Method. The following results were obtained 1. Horizontal force was the greatest in bull loop, the followed by key-hole loop, combination loop, T-loop and initial tooth movement exhibited uncontrolled tipping. 2. Horizontal force in asymmetrical T-loop compared to other closing loops was remarkably decreased, and the intrusive force on the incisors occurred. 3. As torque was increased, the moment was increased as a linear increment. 4. As moment was increased, initial movement of tooth changed to root movement from uncontrolled tipping.
Objective: The purpose of this study was to clarify the effects of continuous force application for extrusive tipping movement and occlusal interference on periapical root resorption in the rat mandibular first molar. Methods: We constructed an appliance comprising a titanium screw implant with a cobalt-chromium post as the anchorage unit and a nickel-titanium closed coil spring (50 cN) as the active unit. Force was applied on the mandibular left first molar of rats for 8 (n = 10) and 15 days (n = 10; experimental groups), with the tooth in occlusion. Five rats were included as a non-treated control group to examine the body effect of the appliance. Active root resorption lacunae, identified using tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase, were evaluated in terms of the length, depth, and area. Results: The rat mandibular first molars were mesially tipped and extruded in the occlusal direction. This mesio-occlusal tipping movement and occlusion resulted in the formation of a compression zone and active root resorption lacunae in the distoapical third of the distal roots. However, there was no significant difference in the amount of root resorption between the two experimental groups. The control group did not exhibit any active root resorption lacunae. Conclusions: Periapical root resorption was induced by continuous extrusive tipping force and occlusal interference in rat mandibular molars. These data suggest that we orthodontists had better take care not to induce occlusal interference during our orthodontic treatment.
Considering the high prevalence, transverse control in adult patients presenting relatively narrow maxillary width is a challenging issue. This study compared the pattern of arch expansion induced by either miniscrew-assisted rapid palatal expander (MARPE) or continuous archwire engaged on self-ligating brackets. Age-matched adults groups(N=15 each) were treated with respective appliance. In both groups, all intercanine, interpremolar, and intermolar widths increased, and significantly greater change was noted in the intermolar region. Buccal tipping was minimal in both groups. Subsequent arch length increase, lingual tipping of incisors and distal tipping of molars were also found in both groups. According to the results, it can be concluded that the MARPE induced generally more arch expansion, particularly in the intermolar width, indicating that the adults showing buccal crossbite of the molars may have to undergo expansion via MARPE prior to arch alignment using continuous archwire.

Today most companies are designing their automobile shapes by using 3 dimensional CAD software, CATIA. And they used to design 2 dimensional press dies to do some elastic work on their products, but they are currently trying to make use of dimensional software, Pro-Engineer. In this case, they have to change the 3 dimensional product design data to the proper format data for the following process. This paper will show the data loss and the deformation during data transfer between CATIA and Pro-Engineer, and then suggest a solution for these problems. Product's surface will be automatically placed by automatic press tipping angle setting in CATIA to prevent the product from being stuck in the press die. The 2 dimensional section view which is based on the tipping angle setting is created by Z-map. And, to remove the data loss and the data deformation in pro-Engineer, the product surface are delivered to the next process after it is changed to the 2 dimensional Z-map curves in CATIA. finally, this paper suggests an algorithm to develop the automatic design program for the press layout which regenerates product shape surface from the previous process.
