  • A Study on the dynamic characteristics of a rotor driven by a tipjet system in hovering condition was carried out. The sectional modeling was performed for the tipjet blade in which the flow path was inserted, and the dynamic characteristics analysis was conducted by modeling the components of the proposed rotor system. The analysis was conducted with respect to the rotational speed and the collective pitch. As a result of the analysis, it was checked that the proposed tipjet rotor did not have aeroelastic instability within the designed operating range. The tipjet test equipment was constructed in order to verify the analysis approach. It was confirmed that the proposed rotor was driven normally by tipjet. The non-rotating eigenmode measurement test and the rotation test were performed, and the validity was proved by comparing the test results and the analysis results.

  • In this paper, the result of the conceptual study of a tipjet driven propulsion system is presented. The concept of a tipjet driven propulsion system is to employ tipjet as power source to drive a rotor Because the vehicle is supposed to takeoff and land vertically, a rotor system, which has tipjet nozzles, is adopted to fly like a helicopter. Exhaust gas, which is generated by an engine, Passes through an internal duct system and divided into four blade ducts. The design code is consists of two parts, engine model and internal duct model. Inside a rotating duct, compressible flow is affected by two additional force terms, centrifugal force and coriolis force and they govern the performance in rotary mode, The intention of this paper is to address the issues associated with sizing and optimizing configurations of a tipjet driven propulsion system especially in rotary wing mode.

  • The Canard rotor/wing (CRW) aircraft concepts offer great potential for application by allowing the use of a common propulsion system for high-speed cruise and low-speed powered lift. Using the rotor for lift in both flight modes increases its utility. In the hovering mode, the exhausted gas from an gas turbine engine is accelerated through the duct system and it provides the tipjet power for rotor system enough to lift the aircraft. In the cruise mode, the rotor is fixed and the exhausted gas is extracted through the main nozzle, such that the aircraft is able to flight with high speed. The duct system was designed using 1-D fanno line flow theory and empirical data. However, the empirical data of the pressure loss coefficient for various bending and dividing ducts were not enough to design our duct system adaptively. Therefore, using 3-D CFD analysis we obtained the pressure loss coefficient for our duct models and chose the appropriate bending or diving duct type. In this paper, we used the CFD-ACE+ software package for the CFD analysis and the modeling of duct system. Through the 3-D CFD analysis, we investigated also the pressure loss and the velocity distributions of the designed whole duct system as well as the blade duct. Comparing the 3-D CFD result with 1-D analysis result, we lessened the uncertainty of the designed duct system and speculated the problem that was not concerned in design state.
