In order to destroy the hard target, it is essential to develop a penetration warhead with high penetration performance. To design a penetration warhead, this paper discusses the effect of nose shape factors such that nose shape, nose length, nose tip diameter, on the penetration performance of the penetrator. AUTODYN-2D has been used to conduct the computational analysis. The experimental result of Forrestal, and a simulation result have been compared to verify the reliability of computational analysis. Computational results show that the nose length have more influence on the penetration performance than the nose shape. Furthermore, simulation results show that the penetration performance can be improved by increasing the nose tip diameter to a specific value, when the nose length of the penetrator is uniform.
Changes in substructure conditions, such as ballast fouling and subgrade settlement may cause the railway quality deterioration, including the differential geometry of the rails. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a hybrid cone penetrometer (HCP) to characterize the railway substructure. The HCP consists of an outer rod and an inner mini cone, which can dynamically and statically penetrate the ballast and the subgrade, respectively. An accelerometer and four strain gauges are installed at the head of the outer rod and four strain gauges are attached at the tip of the inner mini cone. In the ballast, the outer rod provides a dynamic cone penetration index (DCPI) and the corrected DCPI (CDCPI) with the energy transferred into the rod head. Then, the inner mini cone is pushed to estimate the strength of the subgrade from the cone tip resistance. Laboratory application tests are performed on the specimen, which is prepared with gravel and sandy soil. In addition, the HCP is applied in the field and compared with the standard dynamic cone penetration test. The results from the laboratory and the field tests show that the cone tip resistance is inversely proportional to the CDCPI. Furthermore, in the subgrade, the HCP produces a high-resolution profile of the cone tip resistance and a profile of the CDCPI in the ballast. This study suggests that the dynamic and static penetration tests using the HCP may be useful for characterizing the railway substructure.
The purpose of this study is the experimental and numerical investigation on the DME spray characteristics in the combustion chamber according to the injection timing in a common-rail injection system. The visualization system consisted of the high speed camera with metal halide lamp was used for analyzing the spray characteristics such as spray development processes and the spray tip penetration in the free and in-cylinder spray under various ambient pressure. In order to observe the spray characteristics as a function of injection timing, the piston head shape of re-entrant type was created and the fuel injected into the chamber according to various distance between nozzle tip and piston wall in consideration of injection timing. Also, the spray and evaporation characteristics in the cylinder was calculated by using KlVA-3V code for simulating spray development process and spray tip penetration under real engine conditions. It was revealed that the high ambient pressure of 3 MPa was led to delay the spray development and evaporation of DME spray. In addition, injected sprays after BTDC 20 degrees entered the bowl region and the spray at the BTDC 30 degrees was divided into two regions. In the calculated results, the liquefied spray tip penetration and fuel evaporation were shorter and more increased as the injection timing was retarded, respectively.

Electrical resistivity can be used for porosity estimation. In order to improve previously developed ERCP(Electrical Resistivity Cone Probe), 4ERP(4 Electrical Resistivity Probe), which has Wenner array at the tip of probes, has been developed. In properties of current flow Wenner array measures electrical properties of undisturbed area during penetration and relatively correct measurements are guaranteed without polarization. Furthermore, Wenner array equation can estimate electrical resistivity without extra calibration. 4ERP is developed into 2 types, penetration and fixation. Penetration type has wedge-shaped tip. Considering disturbance minimization, fixed type has plane tip. Fixed type 4ERP in consolidation cell measure electrical resistivity increment along porosity decrease, and penetration type 4ERP measured resistivity profile along the depth in chamber. Applying Archie's law, porosity profile was estimated with electrical resistivity. The tests result suggests that 4ERP can be new site investigation equipment with little disturbance.
Dimethyl Ether (DME) is an excellent alternative fuel that provides lower particulate matter (PM) than diesel fuel under the same engine operating conditions. Spray characteristical of DME in common rail injection system were investigated within a constant volume chamber by using the particle motion analysis system. The injector used in this study has a single hole with the different orifice diameter of 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 mm. The injection pressure was fixed at 35MPa and the ambient pressure was varied from 0.6 to 1.5 MPa. Spray characteristics such as spray angle, spray tip penetration and SMD (Sauter mean diameter) were measured. Spray angle was measured at 30d$_{0}$, downstream of the nozzle tip. The measured spray angie increased with increase in the ambient pressure. Increase of the ambient pressure results in a decrease of spray penetration. The experimental result, of spray penetration were compared with the predicted one by theoretical and empirical models. Increase in the ambient pressure and nozzle diameter results in an increase of SMD at a distance 30, 45 and 60d$_{0}$, downstream of the nozzle, respectively.ely.
Bearing capacity of open-ended piles depends largely on inner frictional resistance, which is influenced by the degree of soil plugging. While a fully-plugged open-ended pile produces a bearing capacity similar to a closed-ended pile, fully coring (or unplugged) pile produces a much smaller bearing capacity. In general, open-ended piles are driven under partially-plugged mode. The formation of soil plug may depend on many factors, including wall thickness at the pile tip (or inner pile diameter), sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip and relative density. In this paper, we studied the effects of wall thickness at the pile base and sleeve height of the thickened wall at the pile tip on bearing capacity using laboratory model tests. The tests were conducted on a medium dense sandy ground. The model piles with different tip thicknesses and sleeve heights of thickened wall at the pile tip were tested. The results were also discussed using the incremental filling ratio and plug length ratio, which are generally used to describe the degree of soil plugging. The results showed that the bearing capacity increases with tip thickness. The bearing capacity of piles of smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$; D is pile outer diameter) was found to be dependent on the sleeve length, while it is independent on the sleeve length of greater than a 1D length. We also found that the soil plug height is dependent on wall thickness at the pile base. The results on the incremental filling ratio revealed that the thinner walled piles produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths. The results also revealed that the soil plug height is dependent on sleeve length of up to 2D length and independent beyond a 2D length. The piles of a smaller sleeve length (e.g., ${\leq}1D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at shallow penetration depths while the piles of a larger sleeve length (e.g., ${\geq}2D$) produce higher degree of soil plugging at greater penetration depths.

The test fit has commonly used for the evaluation of the railbed condition, and indirect methods by using the compressional wave are also studied. the direct evaluation method by penetration test has not been studied. For the measurement of in-situ cone tip resistance of the railbed with minimizing the disturbance of the upper railbed. the cone penetrometer with the helical type outer rod(CPH) was developed. The outer rod, which has helical screw, is penetrated through the gravel layer and provides the reaction force for cone penetration testing. the cone tip resistances are measured by the mini cone penetrometer, where diameter is 15mm. For the developing the mini cone, strain gauge installation, circuit configuration, penetration rates and calibration process are considered. For the easy penetration of the screw rod in the field, the reaction force stepping plate and guide column are arranged. The screw rod are penetrated through the gravel layer. And the mini cone was pushed into the subgrade railbed at the penetration rate of 1mm/sec. The penetration test shows that the cone tip resistance increases along the depth. In addition, the subgrade condition is evaluated. This study demonstrates that the CPH may be effectively used for the evaluation of subgrade method any damage of the gravel layer.

Numerical simulations of n-heptane spray characteristics in a constant volume combustion chamber under diesel engine like conditions with increasing ambient gas density ($14.8-142kg/m^3$) and ambient temperature (800-1000 K) respectively were performed to understand the non-vaporizing and vaporizing spray behavior. The effect of fuel temperature (ranging 273-313 K) on spray characteristics was also simulated. In this simulation, spray modeling was implemented into ANSYS FORTE where the initial spray conditions at the nozzle exit and droplet breakups were determined through nozzle flow model and Kelvin-Helmholtz/Rayleigh-Taylor (KH-RT) model. Simulation results were compared with experimentally obtained spray tip penetration result to examine the accuracy. In case of non-vaporizing condition, simulation results show that with an increment of the magnitude of ambient gas density and pressure, the vapor penetration length, liquid penetration length and droplet mass decreases. On the other hand vapor penetration, liquid penetration and droplet mass increases with the increase of ambient temperature at the vaporizing condition. In case of lower injection pressure, vapor tip penetration and droplet mass are increased with a reduction in fuel temperature under the low ambient temperature and pressure.

The increased speed of a train causes increased loads that act on the track substructures. To ensure the safety of the track substructures, proper maintenance and repair are necessary based on an accurate characterization of strength and stiffness. The objective of this study is to develop and apply a cone penetrometer incorporated with the dynamic cone penetration method (CPD) for investigating track substructures. The CPD consists of an outer rod for dynamic penetration in the ballast layer and an inner rod with load cells for static penetration in the subgrade. Additionally, an energy-monitoring module composed of strain gauges and an accelerometer is connected to the head of the outer rod to measure the dynamic responses during the dynamic penetration. Moreover, eight strain gauges are installed in the load cells for static penetration to measure the cone tip resistance and the friction resistance during static penetration. To investigate the applicability of the developed CPD, laboratory and field tests are performed. The results of the CPD tests, i.e., profiles of the corrected dynamic cone penetration index (CDI), profiles of the cone tip and friction resistances, and the friction ratio are obtained at high resolution. Moreover, the maximum shear modulus of the subgrade is estimated using the relationships between the static penetration resistances and the maximum shear modulus obtained from the laboratory tests. This study suggests that the CPD test may be a useful method for the characterization of track substructures.

The purpose of this paper is to analyze the effects of ethanol blending ratio and fuel temperature in diesel-ethanol blended fuel on the spray-atomization characteristics in a high pressure common-rail injection system. In this work, a diesel fuel and three blended fuels were used as test fuels. Blended fuels were made by blending ethanol with a purity 99.9% to diesel fuel, from 0% to 30%. In order to keep diesel-ethanol blending stability, 5% of biodiesel fuel as volumetric ratio was added into test fuels. The fuel temperature was controled in steps with 40K, from 290K to 370K. Macroscopic spray characteristics were investigated by analyzing the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle through spray images obtained from visualization system. In addition, in order to study microscopic spray characteristics of ethanol blended fuels, the droplet diameter, was analyzed using the droplet measuring system. It is revealed that the spray tip penetration is similar regardless of ethanol blending ratio. As ethanol blending ratio is increased, the spray cone angle becomes wider. It is shown that the spray cone angle is affected by low viscosity and density of ethanol. As the fuel temperature increases, the spray tip penetration and spray cone angle become shorter and narrower respectively. The SMD of ethanol blending fuels is smaller than that of diesel fuel because of low viscosity and surface tension of ethanol.
