Vibration analysis of deep curved FG nano-beam has been carried out based on modified couple stress theory. Material properties of curved Timoshenko beam are assumed to be functionally graded in radial direction. Governing equations of motion and related boundary conditions have been obtained via Hamilton's principle. In a parametric study, influence of length scale parameter, aspect ratio, gradient index, opening angle, mode number and interactive influences of these parameters on natural frequency of the beam, have been investigated. It was found that, considering geometrical deepness term leads to an increase in sensitivity of natural frequency about variation of aforementioned parameters.

A study of the natural vibraion of Timoshenko beam with a laminar tear is presented. An analytic model, based on the transverse and longitudinal vibration of beams is employed to determine the natural frequencies. A specific example are given to show the effects of rotary inertia, and shear deformation on the natural frequencies of the beam with a laminar tear. the variations of matural frequencies of beam with the changes of size and location of laminar tear are plotted for several thickness ratio.

This paper describes the estimation method of hull girder response of ships due to springing. To this aim, nonlinear springing effect on the hull girder is evaluated including vertical, horizontal, and torsional deformation of the hull. The Timoshenko beam model is used to calculate the stress distribution on the hull girder. The quadratic strip method is employed to calculate the hydrodynamic forces and moments on the hull. In order to remove the irregular frequencies, 'rigid lid'is adopted on the hull free surface level and hydrodynamic coefficients are interpolated for asymptotic values. The results of example calculation show a reasonable agreement with previous results for both symmetric and anti-symmetric responses.
This article focuses on the study of the buckling behavior of two-dimensional functionally graded (2D-FG) nanosize tubes, including porosity, based on the first shear deformation and higher-order theory of the tube. The nano-scale tube is simulated using the nonlocal gradient strain theory, and the general equations and boundary conditions are derived using Hamilton's principle for the Zhang-Fu's tube model (as a higher-order theory) and Timoshenko beam theory. Finally, the derived equations are solved using a numerical method for both simply-supported and clamped boundary conditions. A parametric study is performed to investigate the effects of different parameters, such as axial and radial FG power indices, porosity parameter, and nonlocal gradient strain parameters, on the buckling behavior of the bi-dimensional functionally graded porous tube. Keywords: Nonlocal strain gradient theory; buckling; Zhang-Fu's tube model; Timoshenko theory; Two-dimensional functionally graded materials; Nanotubes; Higher-order theory.

This paper proposes a spectral element which can represent dynamic responses in high frequency domain such as Lamb waves on a thin plate. A two layer beam model under 2-D plane strain condition is introduced to simulate high-frequency dynamic responses induced by piezoelectric layer (PZT layer) bonded on a base plate. In the two layer beam model, a PZT layer is assumed to be rigidly bonded on a base beam. Mindlin-Herrmann and Timoshenko beam theories are employed to represent the first symmetric and anti-symmetric Lamb wave modes on a base plate, respectively. The Bernoulli beam theory and 1-D linear piezoelectricity are used to model the electro-mechanical behavior of a PZT layer. The equations of motions of a two layer beam model are derived through Hamilton's principle. The necessary boundary conditions associated with electro mechanical properties of a PZT layer are formulated in the context of dual functions of a PZT layer as an actuator and a sensor. General spectral shape functions of response field and the associated boundary conditions are formulated through equations of motions converted into frequency domain. A detailed spectrum element formulation for composing the dynamic stiffness matrix of a two layer beam model is presented as well. The validity of the proposed spectral element is demonstrated through comparison results with the conventional 2-D FEM and the previously developed spectral elements.
Recently, promising structural technologies like multi-function, ultra-load bearing capacity and tailored structures have been put up for discussions. Finite Element (FE) modelling is probably the best-known option capable of treating these superior properties and multi-domain behavior structures. However, advanced materials such as Functionally Graded Material (FGM) and nanocomposites suffer from problems resulting from variable material properties, reinforcement aggregation and mesh generation. Motivated by these factors, this research proposes a unified shape function for FGM, nanocomposites, graded nanocomposites, in addition to traditional isotropic and orthotropic structural materials. It depends not only on element length but also on the beam's material properties and geometric characteristics. The systematic mathematical theory and FE formulations are based on the Timoshenko beam theory for beam structure. Furthermore, the introduced element achieves C1 degree of continuity. The model is proved to be convergent and free-off shear locking. Moreover, numerical results for static and free vibration analysis support the model accuracy and capabilities by validation with different references. The proposed technique overcomes the issue of continuous properties modelling of these promising materials without discarding older ones. Therefore, introduced benchmark improvements on the FE old concept could be extended to help the development of new software features to confront the rapid progress of structural materials.
In the present study, thermo-electro-mechanical vibration characteristics of functionally graded piezoelectric (FGP) Timoshenko nanobeams subjected to in-plane thermal loads and applied electric voltage are carried out by presenting a Navier type solution for the first time. Three kinds of thermal loading, namely, uniform, linear and non-linear temperature rises through the thickness direction are considered. Thermo-electro-mechanical properties of FGP nanobeam are supposed to vary smoothly and continuously throughout the thickness based on power-law model. Eringen's nonlocal elasticity theory is exploited to describe the size dependency of nanobeam. Using Hamilton's principle, the nonlocal equations of motion together with corresponding boundary conditions based on Timoshenko beam theory are obtained for the free vibration analysis of graded piezoelectric nanobeams including size effect and they are solved applying analytical solution. According to the numerical results, it is revealed that the proposed modeling can provide accurate frequency results of the FGP nanobeams as compared to some cases in the literature. In following a parametric study is accompanied to examine the effects of several parameters such as various temperature distributions, external electric voltage, power-law index, nonlocal parameter and mode number on the natural frequencies of the size-dependent FGP nanobeams in detail. It is found that the small scale effect and thermo-electrical loading have a significant effect on natural frequencies of FGP nanobeams.
This paper discusses a refined model for investigating the micro-mechanical behavior of beam-like structures, which are composed of various elastic moduli and complex geometries varying through the cross-section directions and are also periodically-repeated and heterogeneous along the axial direction. Following the previous work (Lee and Yu, 2011), the original three-dimensional static problem is first formulated in a unified and compact form using the concept of decomposition of the rotation tensor. Taking advantage of the smallness of the cross-sectional dimension-to-length parameter and the micro-to-macro heterogeneity, while also performing homogenization along the dimensional reduction simultaneously, the variational asymptotic method is rigorously used to construct a total energy function, which is asymptotically correct up to the second order. Furthermore, through the transformation procedure based on the pure kinematic relations and the linearized equilibrium equations, a generalized Timoshenko model is systematically established. For the purpose of dealing with realistic and complex geometries and constituent materials at the microscopic level, this present approach is incorporated into a commercial analysis package. A few examples available in literature are used to demonstrate the consistency and efficiency of this proposed model, especially for the structures, in which the effects of transverse shear deformations are significant.

This paper presents spectral element formulation which approximates Lamb wave propagation by PZT transducers bonded on a thin plate. A two layer beam model under 2-D plane strain condition is introduced to simulate high-frequency dynamic responses induced by a piezoelectric (PZT) layer rigidly bonded on a base plate. Mindlin-Herrmann and Timoshenko beam theories are employed to represent the first symmetric and anti-symmetric Lamb wave modes on a base plate, respectively. The Euler-Bernoulli beam theory and 1-D linear piezoelectricity are used to model the electro-mechanical behavior of a PZT layer. The equations of motions of a two layer beam model are derived through Hamilton's principle. The necessary boundary conditions associated with the electro-mechanical properties of a PZT layer are formulated in the context of dual functions of a PZT layer as an actuator and a sensor. This paper focuses on large deflection static behavior of edge cracked simple supported beams subjected to a non-follower transversal point load at the midpoint of the beam by using the total Lagrangian Timoshenko beam element approximation. The cross section of the beam is circular. The cracked beam is modeled as an assembly of two sub-beams connected through a massless elastic rotational spring. It is known that large deflection problems are geometrically nonlinear problems. The considered highly nonlinear problem is solved considering full geometric non-linearity by using incremental displacement-based finite element method in conjunction with Newton-Raphson iteration method. There is no restriction on the magnitudes of deflections and rotations in contradistinction to von-Karman strain displacement relations of the beam. The beams considered in numerical examples are made of Aluminum. In the study, the effects of the location of crack and the depth of the crack on the non-linear static response of the beam are investigated in detail. The relationships between deflections, end rotational angles, end constraint forces, deflection configuration, Cauchy stresses of the edge-cracked beams and load rising are illustrated in detail in nonlinear case. Also, the difference between the geometrically linear and nonlinear analysis of edge-cracked beam is investigated in detail.
