  • The low-cycle fatigue crack growth behavior of SUS 304 Stainless steel was investigated at 650.deg. C by the nonlinear fracture mechanics. Crack Propagation can be separated in to cycle-dependent and time-dependent, the former is correlated with .DELTA. $J_{f}$ , J-intergral range and the latter is correlated with J', modified J integral. Transition from cycle-dependent to time-dependent crack growth was successfully predicted using the .betha. hypothesis, which was proposed by the authors on the basis of an analysis on the interaction of elastic and creep strain. To investigate the reliability of .betha.-hypothesis, experimenting by the change of stress-level, stress rate and frequency, following conclusions were obtained. (1) High temperature fatigue crack propagation was separated into cycle-dependent and time-dependent. (2) Transition of crack propagation was predicted by .DELTA. $J_{c}$/.DELTA.$_{f}$ or .betha. (3) Lower limit in cycle-dependent crack propagation was obtained..

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify time-dependent prognostic factors and demonstrate the time-dependent effects of important prognostic factors in patients with advanced gastric cancer (AGC). Materials and Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 3,653 patients with AGC who underwent curative standard gastrectomy between 1991 and 2005 at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital. Multivariate survival analysis with Cox proportional hazards regression was used in the analysis. A non-proportionality test based on the Schoenfeld residuals (also known as partial residuals) was performed, and scaled Schoenfeld residuals were plotted over time for each covariate. Results: The multivariate analysis revealed that sex, depth of invasion, metastatic lymph node (LN) ratio, tumor size, and chemotherapy were time-dependent covariates violating the proportional hazards assumption. The prognostic effects (i.e., log of hazard ratio [LHR]) of the time-dependent covariates changed over time during follow-up, and the effects generally diminished with low slope (e.g., depth of invasion and tumor size), with gentle slope (e.g., metastatic LN ratio), or with steep slope (e.g., chemotherapy). Meanwhile, the LHR functions of some covariates (e.g., sex) crossed the zero reference line from positive (i.e., bad prognosis) to negative (i.e., good prognosis). Conclusions: The time-dependent effects of the prognostic factors of AGC are clearly demonstrated in this study. We can suggest that time-dependent effects are not an uncommon phenomenon among prognostic factors of AGC.

  • In this paper, it is aimed to determine the structural behavior of suspension bridges considering construction stages and different soil conditions. Bosporus Suspension Bridge connecting the Europe and Asia in Istanbul is selected as an example. Finite element model of the bridge is constituted using SAP2000 program considering existing drawings. Geometric nonlinearities are taken into consideration in the analysis using P-Delta large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength of steel and concrete and geometric variations is included in the analysis. Time dependent material properties are considered as compressive strength, aging, shrinkage and creep for concrete, and relaxation for steel. To emphases the soil condition effect on the structural behavior of suspension bridges, each of hard, medium and soft soils are considered in the analysis. The structural behavior of the bridge at different construction stages and different soil conditions has been examined. Two different finite element analyses with and without construction stages are carried out and results are compared with each other. At the end of the analyses, variation of the displacement and internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge deck and towers are given in detail. Also, displacement and stresses for bridge foundation are given with detail. It can be seen from the analyses that there are some differences between both analyses (with and without construction stages) and the results obtained from the construction stages are bigger. It can be stated that the analysis without construction stages cannot give the reliable solutions. In addition, soil condition have effect on the structural behavior of the bridge. So, it is thought that construction stage analysis using time dependent material properties, geometric nonlinearity and soil conditions effects should be considered in order to obtain more realistic structural behavior of suspension bridges.

  • This paper presents the effects of the construction stages using time dependent material properties on the structural behaviour of concrete arch dams. For this purpose, a double curvature Type-5 arch dam suggested in "Arch Dams" symposium in England in 1968 is selected as a numerical example. Finite element models of Type-5 arch dam are modelled using SAP2000 program. Geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the construction stage analysis using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. In addition, the time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Elasticity modulus, creep and shrinkage are computed for different stages of the construction process. In the construction stage analyses, a total of 64 construction stages are included. Each stage has generally $6000m^3$ concrete volume. Total duration is taken into account as 1280 days. Maximum total step and maximum iteration for each step are selected as 200 and 50, respectively. The structural behaviour of the arch dam at different construction stages has been examined. Two different finite element analyses cases are performed. In the first case, construction stages using time dependent material properties are considered. In the second case, only linear static analysis (not considered construction stages) is taken into account. Variation of the displacements and stresses are obtained from the both analyses. It is highlighted that construction stage analysis using time dependent material strength variations and geometric variations has an important effect on the structural behaviour of arch dams. The maximum longitudinal, transverse and vertical displacements obtained from construction stages and static analyses are 1.35 mm and 0 mm; -8.44 and 6.68 mm; -4.00 and -9.90 mm, respectively. In addition, vertical displacements increase from the base to crest of the dam for both analyses. The maximum S11, S22 and S33 stresses are obtained as 1.60MPa and 2.84MPa; 1.39MPa and 2.43MPa; 0.60MPa and 0.50MPa, respectively. The differences between maximum longitudinal, transverse, and vertical stresses obtained from construction stage and static analyses are 78%, 75%, and %17, respectively. On the other hand, there is averagely 12% difference between minimum stresses for all three directions.

  • This study was performed to examine the effect of time dependent properties on RC columns in subway structures subjected to high filled soil layer. By using Program TCC which is a modified version of CPF for the present purpose, a typical column in subway structure was analyzed. Four different model equations for predicted time dependent concrete properties(ACI, CEB-FIP, Bazant & Panula and Korea Bridge Specification) was employed, and the results were compared. It was found that a relevant creep coefficient is recommended to be 1.0 for designing columns in subway structure, and the sol filling work would be performed at least 3 months later after the concrete casting in order to ensure durability by reducing the negative effect of concrete time dependent properties.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to devise an accurate machine learning model for predicting silica concentrations following the addition of impurities, through time series analysis of mining data. Methods: The mining data were preprocessed and subjected to time series analysis using the machine learning model. Through correlation analysis, valid variables were selected and meaningless variables were excluded. To reflect changes over time, dependent variables at baseline were treated as independent variables at later time points. The relationship between independent variables and the dependent variable after n point was subjected to Pearson correlation analysis. Results: The correlation (R2) was strongest after 3 hours, which was adopted as a dependent variable. According to root mean square error (RMSE) data, the proposed method was superior to the other machine learning methods. The XGboost algorithm showed the best predictive performance. Conclusion: This study is important given the current lack of machine learning studies pertaining to the domestic mining industry. In addition, using time series analysis in mining data will show further improvement. Before establishing a predictive model for the proposed method, predictions should be made using data with time series characteristics. After doing this work, it should also improve prediction accuracy in other domains.

  • In this paper, nonlinear static analysis of three-dimensional cable stayed bridges is performed for the time dependent materials properties such as creep, shrinkage and aging of concrete and relaxation of cable. Manavgat Cable-Stayed Bridge is selected as an application. The bridge located in Antalya, Turkey, was constructed with balanced cantilever construction method. Total length of the bridge is 202 m. The bridge consists of one $\ddot{e}$ shape steel tower. The tower is at the middle of the bridge span. The construction stages and 3D finite element model of bridge are modeled with SAP2000. Large displacement occurs in these types of bridges so geometric nonlinearity is taken into consideration in the analysis by using P-Delta plus large displacement criterion. The time dependent material strength and geometric variations are included in the analysis. Two different finite element analyses carried out which are evaluated with and without construction stages and results are compared with each other. As a result of these analyses, variation of internal forces such as bending moment, axial forces and shear forces for bridge tower and displacement and bending moment for bridge deck are given with detailed. It is seen that construction stage analysis has a remarkable effect on the structural behavior of the bridge.

  • Generally, among many kinds of shading devices such as venetian blind, sunscreen, louver and curtain, venetian blind is using widely because the mechanism is so simple and easy to use solar insolation by controlling the slat angle. Analysis of time dependent heat transfer through the window with venetian blind is very important in order to use it effectivly. Therefore, in this study, theoretical thermal analysis method was developed to analyze time dependent heat transfer through a double pane window with and without venetian blind, and was made one module of TRNSYS(A Transient Simulation Program)program. By this way, it was analyzed that how much the variation of slat angle, slat colour and slat absorptivity of venetian blind would be affected on the heating and cooling load of building, and also which colour and angle of slat was optimal for the heating and cooling load of building.

  • Speaker adaptation in eigenvoice space is a popular method for rapid speaker adaptation. To improve the performance of the method, the number of speaker dependent models should be increased and eigenvoices should be re-estimated. However, principal component analysis takes much time to find eigenvoices, especially in a continuous speech recognition system. This paper describes a method to reduce computation time to estimate eigenvoices only for supplementary speaker dependent models and to merge them with the used eigenvoices. Experiment results show that the computation time is reduced by 73.7% while the performance is almost the same in case that the number of speaker dependent models is the same as used ones.

  • It has been known that the application of an airflow window system reduces the energy consumption compared with conventional double pane window in a building. But how to analyze thermal load in a building with an airflow window system has not been well known. so two kinds of method (Mode 1 and Mode 2) to analyze time dependent thermal load of the building with an airflow window system are presented in this study. The results of load analysis about the model building(total area : $4521m^2$, 3 floors) by Mode 2 show that the maximum cooling and heating load in a building with an airflow window system are decreased about 12-17% and about 19.5% than with double pane glass window, and yearly energy consumption with an airflow window system is saved about about 20% than with double pane glass window.
