  • This paper presents a three-dimensional finite element method based structural analysis model for structural analysis of reinforced concrete high-rise buildings during construction. The model considered the time-dependency of the structural configuration and material properties as well as the effect of the construction rate and shoring stiffness. Uniaxial compression tests of young concrete within 28 days of age were conducted to establish the time-dependent compressive stress-strain relationship of concrete, which was then used as input parameters to the structural analysis model. In-situ tests of a RC high-rise building were conducted, the results of which were used for model verification. Good agreement between the test results and model predictions was achieved. At the end, a parametric study was conducted using the verified model. The results indicated that the floor position and construction rate had significant effect on the shore load, whereas the influence of the shore removal timing and shore stiffness have much smaller. It was also found that the floors are more prone to cracking during construction than is ultimate bending failure.

  • We propose an enhanced Green's function approach to predict thermal stresses by considering temperature-dependent material properties. We introduce three correction factors for the maximum stress, the time taken to reach maximum stress, and the time required to attain steady state based on the Green's function results for each temperature. The proposed approach considers temperature-dependent material properties using correction factors, which are defined as polynomial expressions with respect to temperatures based on Green's functions, that we obtain from finite-element (FE) analyses at each temperature. We verify the proposed approach by performing detailed FE analyses on thermal transients. The Green's functions predicted by the proposed approach are in good agreement with those obtained from FE analyses for all temperatures. Moreover, the thermal stresses predicted using the proposed approach are also in good agreement with the FE results, and the proposed approach provides better predictions than the conventional Green's function approach using constant, time-independent material properties.

  • This paper aims to present an alternative analytical method for transient vibration analysis of doubly-curved laminated shells subjected to dynamic loads. In the method proposed, the governing differential equations of laminated shell are derived using the dynamic version of the principle of virtual displacements. The governing equations of first order shear deformation laminated shell are obtained by Navier solution procedure. Time-dependent equations are transformed to the Laplace domain and then Laplace parameter dependent equations are solved numerically. The results obtained in the Laplace domain are transformed to the time domain with the help of modified Durbin's numerical inverse Laplace transform method. Verification of the presented method is carried out by comparing the results with those obtained by Newmark method and ANSYS finite element software. Also effects of number of laminates, different material properties and shell geometries are discussed. The numerical results have proved that the presented procedure is a highly accurate and efficient solution method.

  • SMAC method, one of the computational fluid dynamics techniques, is modified from the original MAC method for the time-dependent variation of flow analysis. The Navier-Stokes equations for incompressible time-dependent viscous flow are applied, and also marker particles that present the visualization of flow analysis are used. In this study SMAC technique is used to analyze the flow behavior in the water-filling of virtual channel. Then by changes of diameter of two ingates, the change of velocity and discharge when two ingates are filled the water to virtual channel are simulated. As a result, water-filling flow pattern in the virtual channel is simulated very well. Therefore, this numerical simulation will also be applied for the design of structures as open flume and porous breakwater.

  • Recently, a large number of box girder bridges with cantilevered decks have been constructed. Especially, segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges are widely used as economic and aesthetic solutions for long span bridges. Segmental erection is a particularly attractive construction alternative in cases where continuously supported formwork is impractical or uneconomical. In segmentally erected bridges, the structural systems are changed as the construction stages are progressive and redistribution of member forces occurs due to time dependent effects of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel. Then, in segmentally erected bridges, analysis are required at each construction states. In this study, nonlinear analysis progam of the segmentally erected prestressed concrete box girder bridges is developed in taking into account nonlinearity of material and geometry, time dependent effect of concrete and relaxation of prestressing steel.

  • The time-dependent analysis of prestressed concrete bridges built adopting the incremental launching technique is presented. After summarizing the well known results derived from the elastic analysis, the problem is approached in the visco-elastic domain taking into account the effects consequent to the complex load history affecting the structure. In particular, the effects produced by prestressing applied both in the launching phase and after it and by application of imposed displacements and of delayed restraints during the launching phases are carefully investigated through a refined analytical procedure. The reliability of the proposed algorithm is tested by means of comparisons with reference cases for which exact solutions are known. A case study of general interest is then discussed in detail. This case study demonstrates that a purely elastic approach represents a too crude approximation, which is unable to describe the specific character of the problem.

  • Simple methods are developed to predict temperatures of a satellite box during launch stage. The box is mounted on outer surface of satellite and directly exposed to space thermal environment for the time period from fairing jettison to separation. These simple methods are to solve a 1st order ordinary differential equation (ODE) which is simplified from the governing equation after applying several assumptions. The existence of analytical solution for the 1st order ODE is determined depending on treatment of time-dependent molecular heating term. Even for the case that the analytical solution is not available due to the time dependent term, the 1st order ODE can be solved by relatively simple numerical techniques. The temperature difference between two different approaches (analytical and numerical solutions) is relatively small (Jess than $1^{\circ}C$ along the time line) when they are applied to STSAT-I launch scenario. The present methods can be generally used as tools to quickly check whether a satellite box is safe against space environment during the launch stage for the case that the detailed thermal analysis is not available.

  • This paper presents a frequency-dependent cell impedance analysis chip for use in cancer and normal cell discrimination. The previous cell impedance analysis chips for flowing cells cannot allow enough time for cell-to-electrode contact to monitor frequency-dependent impedance response. Another type of the previous cell impedance analysis chips for the cells clamped by membranes need complex sample control for making stable cell-to-electrode contact. We present a new impedance analysis chip using the microchamber array, on which a PDMS cover is placed to make stable cell-to-electrode contact for the individual cell trapped in each microchamber; thus achieving frequency-dependent single-cell impedance analysis without complex sample control. Compared to the normal cells, the magnitude of NHBE cells is $60.07{\sim}97.41k{\Omega}$ higher than A549 cells in the frequency range of 95.6 kHz~2MHz and the phase of NHBE is $3.96^{\circ}{\sim}20.8^{\circ}$ higher than A549 cells in the frequency range of 4.37 kHz~2MHz, respectively. It is demonstrated experimentally that the impedance analysis chip performs frequency-dependent cell impedance analysis by making stable cell-to-electrode contact with simple sample control; thereby applicable to the normal cell and cancer cell discrimination.

  • A workflow is a flow of work supported by computers. An instance of a workflow is called case. Companies need to constantly refine their current workflows in order to meet various requirements. The change of current workflows is called dynamic change of the workflow. Since Ellis et al. proposed three change types, Flush, Abort, and Synthetic Cut-Over in 1995, various change types have been proposed. A promising change type is Migrate proposed by Sadiq et al., because Migrate changes workflow definitions immediately and makes the redo of cases minimum. However, the formal modeling and time-dependent analysis of Migrate has not been done. This paper proposes a method of computing change time of Migrate dynamic changes for time-dependent analysis. Change time is a measure for evaluating dynamic changes. We first show a Petri-nets-based model of Migrate dynamic changes. Then we present a method of computing change time based on the net model. Finally, we apply the method to 270 examples, and show experimental results, and comparison with Ellis et al..'s three change types.

  • The total embankment settlement consists of three stages: the initial settlement, the primary consolidation settlement, and the secondary consolidation settlement. The total embankment settlement is largely controlled by the primary consolidation settlement, which is usually computed with numerical models that implement Biot's theory of consolidation. The key parameter that affects the primary consolidation time is the coefficient of permeability. Due to the complex stress and strain states in the foundation soil under the embankment, to be able to predict the consolidation time more precisely, aside from porosity-dependency, the strain-dependency of the coefficient of permeability should be also taken into account in numerical analyses. In this paper, we propose a two-dimensional plane strain numerical model of embankment primary consolidation, which implements Biot's theory of consolidation with both porosity-dependent and strain-dependent coefficient of permeability. We perform several numerical simulations. First, we demonstrate the influence of the strain-dependent coefficient of permeability on the computed results. Next, we validate our numerical model by comparing computed results against in-situ measurements for two road embankments: one near the city of Saga, and the other near the city of Boston. Finally, we give our concluding remarks.
