During the last thirty years many structural control concepts have been proposed for the reduction of the structural response caused by earthquake excitations. Their research and implementation in practice have shown that seismic control of structures has a lot of potential but also many limitations. In this paper the importance of two practical issues, time delay and saturation effect, on the performance of controlled structures, is discussed. Their influence, both separately and in interaction, on the response of structures controlled by a modified pole placement algorithm is investigated. Characteristic buildings controlled by this algorithm and subjected to dynamic loads, such as harmonic signals and actual seismic events, are analyzed for a range of levels of time delay and saturation capacity of the control devices. The response reduction surfaces for the combined influence of time delay and force saturation of the controlled buildings are obtained. Conclusions regarding the choice of the control system and the desired properties of the control devices are drawn.

In the teleoperation system, force and velocity signals are communicated between a master and a slave robot. The addition of force feedback to a teleoperation system benefits the operator by providing more information to perform given tasks especially for tasks requiring contact with environment. When the master and slave arms are located in different places, time delay is unavoidable and it is well known that the system can become unstable when even a small time delay exists in the communication channel. The control scheme proposed in this paper is based on the estimator with virtual master model. Delayed signal from the master robot can be replaced by the estimated signal with the virtual master model. This control scheme makes the teleoperation system stable for the given time delay while the conventional scheme is not. This new control scheme is verified through numerical simulations and an experiments using the dual axis testbed of the teleoperation system.

One of the important problems which should be solved in the telecontroller control is the time delay problem. In this paper, we propose a method of solving a random time delay problem using QoS(quality of service), and we show not only how to solve an unpredictable time delay problem but also how to compute a maximum time delay that could satisfy a basic assumption of many telecontroller methods. Using our proposed method, it is find that we can offer more stable time delay in telecontroller than using TCP and UDP.

A new discrete-time fuzzy output feedback control method for nonlinear systems with unknown time-delay is proposed. Ma et al. proposed an analysis and design method of fuzzy controller and observer and Cao et al. extend this result to be applicable fir the nonlinear systems with known time-delay. For the case of unknown time-delay, we derive the sufficient condition f3r the asymptotic stability of the equilibrium Point by applying Lyapunov-Krasovskii theorem and convert this condition into the LMI problem.

In this paper, we consider the design problem of delay-dependent robust $H{\infty}$ controller of discrete-time descriptor systems with parameter uncertainties and interval time-varying delays in state and control input by delay-dependent LMI (linear matrix inequality) technique. A new delay-dependent bounded real lemma for discrete-time descriptor systems with time-varying delays is derived. The condition for the existence of robust $H{\infty}$ controller and the robust $H{\infty}$ state feedback control law are proposed by LMI approach. A numerical example is demonstrated to show the validity of the design method.
A digital controller for nonlinear time-delay system is proposed in this paper. A nonlinear time-delay system is discretized by using Taylor's discretization method. And the discretized system can be converted to a general nonlinear system. For this reason, general nonlinear controller synthesis can be applied to the discretized time-delay system. We adopted MAC controller synthesis for this study. Computer simulations are conducted to verify the performance of the proposed method. The results of simulation show good performance of the proposed controller synthesis and the proposed method is useful to control nonlinear time-delay system easily.
This paper is devoted to the passivity based control in bilateral teleoperation for varying time delay. Toimprove the stability and task performance, master and slave in bilateral teleoperation must be coupled via the network through which the force and velocity are communicated. However, time delay existing in the transmission channel is a long standing impediment to bilateral control and can destabilize the system, even if the system is stable without time delay, In this paper, we investigate how the varying time delay affects the advanced teleoperation stability and results in an out-of-control status. A new approach based on passivity control has been bilaterally designed for both the master and slave sites and the simulation result will verify that our approach is better and effective for passive bilateral teleoperation.

A certain degree of energy saving can be possible by controlling the delay time of occupancy sensor. In this paper a control circuit is designed for automatic control of delay time setting appropriate to different situations using a digital counter, two latches and an adder. The delay time is controlled by adjusting the time constant of RC circuit through on-off control of switching devices according to adder output, which determines the base current level of switching devices. And from PSpice simulation it is verified to function properly.

Uncertain time delay happens when the process reads the sensor data and sends the control input to the plant located at a remote site in distributed control system. As in the case of data network using TCP/IP, VDN that integrates both device network and data network has uncertain tim e delay. Uncertain time delay can cause degradation in stability of distributed control system based on VDN. This paper investigates the transmission characteristic of VDN and suggests a control scheme based on the Smith's predictor to minimize the effect of uncertain time delay. The validity of the proposed control scheme is demonstrated with tracking position control of experiments.

In this paper, we present a new control and monitoring technique for a power system using CAN(Controller Area Network). Feedback control systems having co'ntrol loops closed through a network(i.e. Ethernet, ControlNet, CAN) are called NCSs(Networked Control Systems). The major problem of NCSs is the variation of stability property according to time delay including network-induced delay and computation delay in nodes. We present a new stability analysis method of NCSs with time delay exploiting a state-space model of LTI(Linear Time Invariant) interconnected systems. The proposed method can determine a proper sampling period of NCSs that preserves stability performance even in NCSs with a dynamic controller. We design CAN nodes which can transmit control and monitoring data through CAN bus and apply these to NCSs for a power system. The results of the experiment validate effectiveness of our control and monitoring technique for a power system.
