  • Fragility analysis is an effective tool that is frequently used for seismic risk assessment of bridges. There are three different approaches to derive a fragility curve: experimental, empirical and analytical. Both experimental and empirical methods to derive fragility curve are based on past earthquake reports and expert opinions which are not suitable for all bridges. Therefore, analytical fragility analysis becomes important. Nonlinear time history analysis is commonly used which is the most reliable method for determining probabilistic demand models. In this study, to determine the probabilistic demand models of bridges, time history analyses were performed considering both material and geometrical nonlinearities. Serviceability limit states for three different service velocities were considered as a performance goal. Also, support displacements, component yielding and collapse limits were taken into account. Both serviceability and component fragility were derived by using maximum likely hood methods. Finally, the seismic performance and critical members of the bridge were probabilistically determined and clearly presented.

  • Determination of ductility demand and prediction of nonlinear seismic responses of a structure under the earthquake ground motions have become a very important subject for evaluation of seismic performance in the performance based seismic design. In this study, the system ductility demand and nonlinear seismic responses of the steel moment framed structures by the nonlinear time history analysis are estimated and compared with those obtained from the capacity spectrum method suggested in ATC-40 and proposed method that is an improvement on the capacity spectrum method using the equivalent responses derived directly from a multi degree of freedom system. the adequacy and validity of the proposed method is verified by comparing the results evaluated by the method proposed in this study and the results obtained from method suggested in ATC-40 to the nonlinear seismic responses of the example structures from the nonlinear time history analysis.

  • This study examines the construction method of lime tomb of royal tombs in the Choseon Dynasty based on reference. This was primarily published as "The Five Manners and Courtesy of the Annals of Sejong" as examples, which were followed by the influence of Koryo's culture in the beginning foundation of Choseon, were organized in the time of Sejong; and later, in the time of Sungjong, "The National Five Manners and Courtes y" was published. Such old reference explains the stone materials and construction method of the royal tomb's pit yet there were not many studies regarding the pit of royal tomb in the Choseon Dynasty. And there exists no historical research or reference study in regard to the pit of royal tomb which is formed as a lime tomb. This is believed to be impossible to excavate the royal tomb since ancestral ritual formalities are still given by the descendants and because of our country's culture of giving ancestral ritual formalities which value formalities and filial duty. However, the current excavation of Guhui Tomb, which was the early burial site, was important since it gives an opportunity to look at the shape and structure of lime tombs in the Choseon Dynasty. Thus, this study, based on the excavation of Guhui Tomb, will look into the construction method of the pit of lime tomb and will examine the structure, shape, construction method, etc. of the lime tomb which was formed after the time of Sejo in a way with reference history. This is an important data to learn the construction method of limb tomb of royal tombs in the Choseon Dynasty and is believed to have a very important value as historical materials as to understanding the structure of the pit of royal tombs in the Choseon Dynasty which yet has not been excavated.

  • The Sa-am acupuncture is the acupuncture method created during Chosun Dynasty. It is a unique acupuncture method that was created solely in Korea. Its theories are based on the 69th article of "Classic of Difficult Issues", or Nanjing (難經), which says "tonify its mother when deficiency occurs, and purgate its son when excess occurs" (虛則補其母, 實則瀉其子); the concept of "controlling the viscera which restrains the target" "抑其官" was added to this theory to form the principle of Sa-am acupuncture. It is significant that it turns to the basic principles of the Five Viscera and Six Bowels rather than the 體針 or 阿是針 of the existing acupuncure. Sa-am acupuncture was established in the middle of Chosun Dynasty and was popularized to the practitioners of Korean Medicine through transcripts and printed books. The medical books of at the time of Japanese imperialism that introduced Sa-am acupuncture are "經絡學總論", "舍岩鍼灸訣", "經濟要訣", "靑囊訣", "察病要訣", "濟世寶鑑", "經驗寢具編", and "舍岩 靑囊訣". The magazine that mentions the Sa-am acupuncture is "韓方醫藥". The books on Traditional Medicine that is related to Sa-am acupuncture were of great help in reconstruction of Sa-am acupuncture after the liberation of Korea and explaining the principle of Sa-am acupunture in various angles.

  • The blowdown history of the TMI-2 accident up to the isolation of the relief valve associated with a small break LOCA is reviewed briefly. An analysis is made to determine what instruments should be added in the core in order to prevent core damage in the case of the TMI-2 accident. With the added instruments a procedure is presented on how to predict the uncovered level of the core and how to calculate operator time margin. Sample calculations are done for the TMI-2 accident to determine the uncovered level and operator time margin. Finally, the map to show the uncovered level of the core and operator time margin is drawn with measurable parameters by the above methods.

  • An accurate calculation of the stochastic wind field is the foundation for analyzing wind-induced structure response and reliability. In this research, the spatial correlation of structural wind field was considered based on the time domain method. A method for calculating the stochastic wind field based on cross stochastic Fourier spectrum was proposed. A flowchart of the proposed methodology is also presented in this study to represent the algorithm and workflow. Along with the analysis of regional wind speed distribution, the wind speed time history sample was calculated, and the efficiency can therefore be verified. Results show that the proposed method and programs could provide an efficient simulation for the wind-induced structure response analysis, and help determine the related parameters easily.

  • In this study, a fatigue damage estimation for an ice-going vessel navigating through broken ice fields was carried out. A numerical model to simulate the interaction between ice and structure developed using the finite element method was introduced. Time series of stresses calculated by the proposed model and the corresponding fatigue analysis results are presented. The numerical model enables the long time analysis through an efficient interaction model, the application of the periodic media analysis and the convolution integral, and it allows the stress time history to be extracted directly using the finite element method. To describe the probability distribution of stress amplitudes, the 2-parameter Weibull model was applied to the calculated stress time history, and the fatigue damage was calculated using the Palmgren-Miner rule. Finally, the fatigue damage considering the ice conditions of the Baltic Sea was calculated using the proposed method and LR method, and the results were compared to each other.

  • Tanks are used to store a wide variety of liquids such as oil, gasoline and water. It is reported that, a large number of tanks have been damaged during severe earthquakes. Therefore, understanding their behavior under earthquake is an important subject for structural engineers. In this paper, a comprehensive study is presented on dynamic response of tanks. A parametric study has been completed on the rectangular storage tanks with aid of finite element method (FEM). Various parameters are investigated, such as; liquid height, density and earthquake with different peak ground acceleration (PGA). When investigating these parameters, modal and time history method is used. Six different earthquake records are used for time history analysis. The analysis results show that when the PGA increases by 10.7 times, the maximum displacements, stress, sloshing and base shear increase by 11.4, 22.6, 5.46 and 17.8 times, respectively and when the liquid height increases by two times, the absolute maximum values of stress, displacements, base shear and sloshing increase 1.65, 2.04, 2.05 and 1.34. Furthermore, values of sloshing increase with decrease in density.
