  • Clocks for time synchronization using radio signals such as global navigation satellite system (GNSS) may lose reference signals by intentional or unintentional jamming. This is called as holdover. When holdover occurs, a clock goes into free run in which synchronization performance is degraded considerably. In order to maintain the required precise time synchronization during holdover, accurate estimation on main parameters such as frequency offset and frequency drift is needed. It is necessary to implement an optimum filter through various simulation tests by creating clock noise in accordance with given specifications in order to estimate the main parameters accurately. In this paper, a method that creates clock noise in accordance with given specifications is described.

  • It is well known that an OFDM receiver is vulnerable to synchronization errors. Despite fine estimations used in the initial acquisition, there are still residual synchronization errors. Though these errors are very small, they severely degrade the bit error rate (BER) performance. In this paper, we propose a residual error elimination scheme for the digital OFDM baseband receiver aiming to improve the overall BER performance. Three improvements on existing schemes are made: a pilot-aided recursive algorithm for joint estimation of the residual carrier frequency and sampling time offsets; a delay-based timing error correction technique, which smoothly adjusts the incoming data stream without resampling disturbance; and a decision-directed channel gain update algorithm based on recursive least-squares criterion, which offers faster convergence and smaller error than the least-mean-squares algorithms. Simulation results show that the proposed scheme works well in the multipath channel, and its performance is close to that of an OFDM system with perfect synchronization parameters.

  • In general, in order to reduce an initial cell searching time, W-CDMA systems adopt a three-step cell search scheme: slot synchronization, frame synchronization, and primary scrambling code identification. We consider the second step (frame synchronization), in which a coherent detection using P-SCH (primary synchronization channel) is possible. In this paper, we propose a new coherent detection scheme, where a first order recursive filter is used to enhance channel estimation performance. Computer simulation results indicate that the detection performance of the proposed scheme can be robust over large range of frequency offset.

  • Grid synchronization is one of the key techniques for the grid-connected power converters used in distributed power generation systems. In order to achieve fast and accurate grid synchronization, a new phase locked loop (PLL) is proposed on the basis of the complex filter matrixes (CFM) orthogonal signal generator (OSG) crossing-decoupling method. By combining first-order complex filters with relation matrixes of positive and negative sequence voltage components, the OSG is designed to extract specific frequency orthogonal signals. Then, the OSG mathematical model is built in the frequency-domain and time-domain to analyze the spectral characteristics. Moreover, a crossing-decoupling method is suggested to decouple the fundamental voltage. From the eigenvalue analysis point of view, the stability and dynamic performance of the new PLL method is evaluated. Meanwhile, the digital implementation method is also provided. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified by experiments under unbalanced and distorted grid voltage conditions.

  • In this paper, we propose a new frame structure and frame synchronization algorithm for OFDM burst mode transmission. On the contrary to conventional OFDM symbol based methods, the proposed preamble for symbol frame synchronization is designed independently in time domain in arbitrary length and is placed at the beginning of the frame. The proposed frame synchronization algorithm by using the preamble is working independent of frequency offset and robust to serious channel environment.

  • A DMT transceiver recovers the sampling time from reserved sub-carriers, the pilots. Since the pilots are available after the FFT, the symbol synchronization must be done before sample synchronization. In DMT VDSL system, symbol synchronization is handled separately from sample synchronization, although the two processes are intimately related. The DMT symbol itself contains sufficient information, the cyclic extension, for symbol synchronization. Using only the sign bit of received signal, the Maximum Likelihood Estimation solution is derived. The Tx windowing in the transmitter of DMT VDSL system results in the blurring of MLE peaks. We propose the weighted summing MLE method using the sign bit which produces the clearly sharp top of MLE peaks. The stability of symbol synchronization is improved significantly by averaging over a few symbols. This paper presents the study of the original MLE and the weighted summing MLE using sign bit. A clock difference between transmitter and receiver destroys the oahogonality of the carriers. Therefore, a receiver using asynchronous sampling must perform timing correction in the discrete-time domain. We introduce an efficient digital sample synchronization method which is based on temporal and frequency domain digital signal processing.

  • In recent years, a lot of industrial equipments have serial communication channel such as FieldBus (CAN, Profibus, etc.) or Ethernet that provides real time communication between industrial equipments. Theses applications include gantry crane, robot, chip mounter, etc.. In this paper, we discuss the synchronization technique for networked multi-motor systems where controllers (commercial servo amps) are distributed and interconnected by CAN (Controller Area Networks). We first describe the equivalent model for the individual servo-amp and motor using the frequency response. We design the $H{\infty}$ controller for motion synchronization. Finally, the synchronization technique using the equivalent model and the $H{\infty}$ controller is verified by the simulation and the experiment.

  • In this paper we introduce the correlation-aided distributed sample acquisition (CDSA) scheme for fast cell search in IMT-2000 W-CDMA cellular system. The proposed scheme incorporates the state symbol correlation process into the comparison-correction based synchronization process of the original DSA scheme to enable fast acquisition even under very poor channel environment. for its realization, each mobile station (MS) has to store in its memory a set of state sample sequences. which are determined by the long-period scrambling sequences used in the system and the sampling interval of the state samples. CDSA based cell search is carried out in two stages : First, the MS first acquires the slot timing by using the primary synch code (PSC) and then identifies the igniter code which conveys the state samples of the current cell . Secondly. the MS identifies the scrambling code and frame timing by taking the comparison-correction based synchronization approach and, if the identification is not done satisfactorily within preset time. it initiates the state symbol correlation process which correlates the received symbol sequence with the pre-stored state sample sequences for a successful identification. As the state symbol SNR is relatively high. the state symbol correlation process enables reliable synchronization even in very low chip-SNR environment. Simulation results show that the proposed CDSA scheme outperforms the 3GPP 3-step approach, requiring the signal power of about 7 dB less for achieving the same acquisition time performance in low-SNR environments. Furthermore, it turns out very robust in the typical synchronization environment where large frequency offset exists.

  • ATSC DTV system uses FPLL block for acquiring the frequency synchronization. Because the FPLL uses only the pilot signal, the frequency convergence range becomes narrower and it takes a more time to acquire the frequency synchronization as the pilot is distorted. And the spectrum shape around the pilot makes an asymmetric convergence range between the positive frequency offset and the negative frequency offset. This paper proposes the algorithm that requires the Installation of the fitters at the both edges of a VSB spectrum and uses the signal power that passes these filters. The proposed algorithm complements the problems of the asymmetric convergence range and overcomes the performance degradation due to the distortion of a pilot level.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) frame synchronization scheme for LED-ID(Identification) systems. A frame synchronization is an essential procedure for normal operations of OFDM systems. Bernoulli-Gaussian noise is considered in LED-ID systems' environments. In order to enhance the OFDM frame synchronization performance, we add a ROGS(Repeated Orthogonal Gold Sequence) to OFDM signals in the time domain. The power level of a ROGS does not affect a normal operation of the LED-ID systems. Frame synchronization can be achieved successfully over LED-ID channels interfered by impulsive noise owing to good auto and cross-correlation properties of the ROGS.
