  • A stargazer fish, Uranoscopus tosae of family Uranoscopidae was collected for the first time in Kunsan, Korea. The U. tosae was similar to U. oligolepis in exomorphological features but had sharply distinguishable from U. oligolepis in the several characteristics, U. tosae had the embedded cycloid scales on the nape between both lateral lines. 4 preopercular spines, anterior tubular and posterior slit of nostril pores, and narrower and longer respiratory valve than orbit. No other patterns were presented on the surface of head and body.

  • The Wavelet Transform providing both of the frequency and time information of an image is proved to be very much effective for the compression of images, and recently lot of studies on coding algorithms for images decomposed by the wavelet transform together with the multiresolution theory are going on. This paper proposes a Quadtree decompositon method of image compression applied to the images decomposed by wavelet transform by using the correlations between pixels .Since the coefficients obtained by the wavelet transform have high correlations between scales, the Quadtree method can reduce the data quantity effectively The experimental image with 256${\times}$256 size was used to compare the Performances of the existing and the proposed compression methods.

  • Classification of Electroencephalogram(EEG) makes one of key roles in the field of clinical diagnosis, such as detection for epilepsy. Spectrum analysis using the fourier transform(FT) uses the same window to signals, so classification rate decreases for nonstationary signals such as EEG's. In this paper, wavelet power spectrum method using wavelet transform which is excellent in detection of transient components of time-varying signals is applied to the classification of three types of Event Related Potential(EP) and compared with the result by fourier transform. In the experiments, two types of photic stimulation, which are caused by eye opening/closing and artificial light, are used to collect the data to be classified. After choosing a specific range of scales, scale-averaged wavelet spectrums extracted from the wavelet power spectrum is used to find features by Back-Propagation(13P) algorithm. As a result, wavelet analysis shows superiority to fourier transform for nonstationary EEG signal classification.

  • Pixel classification is one of basic image processing issues. The general characteristics of the pixels belonging to various classes are discussed and the radical principles of pixel classification are given. At the same time. a pixel classification scheme based on image direction measure is proposed. As a typical application instance of pixel classification, an adaptive multi-level median filter is presented. An image can be classified into two types of areas by using the direction information measure, that is. smooth area and edge area. Single direction multi-level median filter is used in smooth area. and multi-direction multi-level median filter is taken in the other type of area. What's more. an adaptive mechanism is proposed to adjust the type of the filters and the size of filter window. As a result. we get a better trade-off between preserving details and noise filtering.

  • This paper introduces optical methods for in-situ measurement of surface temperature and pressure transient in thermal processes having nanosecond time scales. In the temperature measurement, a p -Si thin film whose refractive index is calibrated as a function of temperature is embedded beneath the sample surface and the photothermal reflectance is monitored for estimating the surface temperature. The pressure transients are measured using the photoacoustic optical deflection method. The experimental technique is used to analyze the nanosecond laser induced vaporization process that is central to numerous engineering and bio-medical applications. Based on the experimental results, discussions are made on the experimental technique and the physical mechanisms of laser-driven explosive vaporization phenomena.

  • Haptic rendering is a process that provides force feedback during interactions between a user and an object. This paper presents a haptic rendering technique for a telemanipulation system of deformable objects using image processing and physically based modeling techniques. The interaction forces between an instrument driven by a haptic device and a deformable object are inferred in real time based on a continuum mechanics model of the object, which consists of a boundary element model and ${\alpha}$ priori knowledge of the object's mechanical properties. Macro- and micro-scale experimental systems, equipped with a telemanipulation system and a commercial haptic display, were developed and tested using silicone (macro-scale) and zebrafish embryos (micro-scale). The experimental results showed the effectiveness of the algorithm in different scales: two experimental systems applied the same algorithm provided haptic feedback regardless of the system scale.

  • A series of numerical experiments are performed to examine the generation of inter-annual variations by an inertial current in an idealized semi-enclosed basin with dimension comparable to that of the East Sea. Model results indicate that the inter-annual variations dominate the kinetic energy spectrum with a peak around the time scales of 2-3 years. These variations are mostly due to the westward propagating meanders and large eddies induced by the instability of current, indicating their dependency on the eddy-resolving capacity of the model. They are generated in the interior of the basin but their energy is largely confined near the western boundary such that the east-west dimension of the basin cannot be considered as a critical factor as long as the basin covers enough western boundary region. Overall, this study suggests that the inter-annual variation observed in the East Sea is due to the meandering and large eddies induced by the instability of the current.

  • We have introduced a new version of the 3-D lid-driven cavity problem that leads to more complicated fluid parcel trajectories and thus, enhanced mixing, but at the same time weakens corner singularities. We employed an advanced form of LES to solve this problem and presented preliminary results that show very complicated streamline structures on both large and small scales, despite a relatively low Reynolds number. Finally, we demonstrated moderate speedups via parallelization. Ongoing tests are expected to resolve the questions raised regarding possible sources of the rather poor parallel performance compared with that seen in earlier studies with the same code. Because it is expected that findings may be significant for parallel performance in general, we plan to emphasize this aspect in the oral presentation the Parrel (CFD 2006 Conference.

  • The lower-stratospheric polar temperature in winter and spring for both hemispheres is investigated based on the NCEP/NCAR 50-year reanalysis data with respect to the strength of the stratospheric eddy heat flux. Both the polar temperature and the eddy heat flux show significant variation on the decadal and year-to-year time scales except during the Southern Hemisphere winter. The year-to-year variation in the polar temperature is mainly determined by the eddy heat flux convergence. The eddy heat flux convergence is compared with the diabatic heating rate obtained from a two-dimensional model. Radiative heating caused by absorption of solar radiation is comparable to the heating caused by the eddy heat flux convergence in the Southern Hemisphere. The effect of ozone depletion on diabatic heating has been found to be secondary in the Northern Hemisphere, even in March 1997 when the record depletion of ozone took place.

  • In an effort to identify quantitatively historical drought conditions, and to evaluate their temporal and spatial variability , two commonly used drougth indices, the standardized precipitation index, SPI by Mckee and the Palmer drought severity index. PDSI were calculated from 54 meteorological stations, SPI was evaluated for different time scales, 3 to 48 months. As the compjtational spans for SPI increase from 3 to 48 months the frequency and intensity of drought decrease, but the duration of drought increase. When monthly and ten-day PDSIs were compared, the frequency and duratin of drought were almost equal and the intensity of drought differ slightly. The three month SPI has the advatage to detect the drought resulting from short-term shortage of rainfall, while PDSI had the advantage to detect the state of drought resulting from cumulated shortage of rainfall. The period-frequency spectrum analyses at Kangnung statino showed that the maximum value of relative frequency was 24.4% when the period was 5.2months, and the 6month SPI has most similar trends to PDSI.
