  • The objective of this research was to find a useful genetic information for yield characteristics of tillering maize hybrids. Fls were planted under three plant densities at the experimental field of Agricultural College of Chungnam National University. The fresh yield of P1213749//FR805/IK3, FR805/IK3//Waesungri and IK/LE/FR805/IK3 was 7,862kg/10a, 8,290kg/10a and 7,746kg/10a, respectively. The fresh yield of tillering maize hybrids was higher than that of P3394 hybrids. The dry matter yield of P3394 hybrid was 1,430kg/10a with low plant density(4,800p1an1s) and that of PI213749//FR805/IK3 was 1,834kg/10a, the dry weight of FR805/IK3//Waesungri was 1,836kg/10a and that of IK/LE/FR805/IK3 was 1,810kg/10a. Grain yields per 10a of IK/LE//FR805/IK3(783kg) was the highest in 4,800plants/10a, and that of check hybrid was higher than the tillering maize hybrids in 3,600plants/10a, but grain yield per 10a of IK/LE/FR805/IK3 was 752kg, and that of P1213749/Dangjin//IK/LE(699kg) was higher than P3394 hybrid(680kg) with 2,400plants/10a.

  • The maizes used in the study were three inbreds and a hybrid which were developed by Choe et al. Chungnam National University, All the maizes used were found to tillered in Korea. But under certain environmental conditions. the tillering maizes were either less tillered or not tillered, The objective of the study was then to clarify the effects of temperature on the tillering habits of maize. For the study, maize was grown in temperature controlled growth cabinets under four different temperature regimes (15,20,25 and 3$0^{\circ}C$) for 30 days. Each maize plant was grown in a pot(20cm diameter). The initiation of tillers were accelerated at low temperature. Especially the number of tillers per plant was highest under 2$0^{\circ}C$ regime regardless of the inbreds or hybrid. The tillering habits of maize were rather decelerated by high temperature, although high temperature promoted the plant growth.

  • This study was carried out to understand the relationship between sources and sinks in tillering maize hybrid. A non-tillering hybrid was included as check hybrid, The following treatments were imposed on the two hybrids at tasseling stages: 1) no leaves removed, 2) all leaves removed, 3) leaves above 1st ear node removed, 4) leaves below 1st ear node removed and 5) only 1st ear removed. The experiment was arranged in a split plot with hybrids as main plots and treatments as sub plots. Results obtained were summarized as follows: Plant heights in control were significantly higher in both hybrids than other treatments, No significant differences of plant height were observed among treatments of leaf removal in both hybrids. No significant differences of kernel weights of plant were found between locations of leaf removal, But seed weight of tillering hybrids was about 10 to 15% heavier than that of non-tillering hybrid. Stem weight showed the same tendency as the kernel weights. Leaf removal above the ear node lowered kernel weight significantly up to 60% compared with no leaf removal. The leaf removal below the ear node lowered the kernel weight about 40%. The effects of leaf removal on kernel weight was more serious in the non-tillering hybrid than in the tillering hybrid. Contribution of each part to the total dry matter varied with position of leaf removal. When no leaves were removed, contribution of each part to the total dry matter was great in the order of kernel weight, leaf weight and culm weight. When leaves above the ear node were removed, the contribution of each part to the total dry matter was in the order of culm weight, leaf weight and kernel weight. When leaves below the ear node were removed, the contribution of kernel weight was greater than the contribution of leaf and culm weights.

  • An experiment was conducted to study the dffects of fertilizers on maize tillering. Hybrids used were non-tillering hybrid, Nangano No.1, one of the leading hybrids in Japan and tillering hybrids, IK$_1$ /IRI develored at the Dept. of Agronomy, College of Agriculture, Chungnam National Univ., Taejon, Korea. The experiment was conducted at Dottori Prefecture in Japan. Four fertilizer levels, i. e., standard level, half amount of standard level, standard level plus composts and standard level plus two times of composts currently recommended for farmers were used. Higher fertilizer levels were effective for increasing plant weight of both hybrids. All fresh weight as well dry weight of the whole plants and plant parts of IK$_1$/IRI were higher than those of Nangano No. 1, regardless of fertilizers applied mainly due to the tiller development. The number of tillers per plant of IK$_1$/IRI was increased as the level of fertilizer was increased. Especially in sandy soil, composts seemed to be very effective in increasing tiller number per plant of IK$_1$/IRI.

  • A Korean local maize line, MET, which has multi-ears and tillers has been proved as a potential source for silage production. However, no fundamental genetic nature for the line has been investigated. Therefore, this study was done to find genetic information on the multi-earing and -tillering habits of MET line. MET line and a hybrid. (Mo 17 ${\times}$ B68), with monoculm and single ear per plant were used for production of F$_1$(F$\_$1-12/ and F$\_$1-21/), F$\_$2-12/, F$\_$2-21/, BC$\_$1-12/ and BC$\_$1-21/ generations. From the comparison of reciprocal crosses, it was found that the tillering and earing habits of the MET line are controlled by cytoplasmic factors. The tiller and ear numbers, and barren ears were all characters associated with the MET cytoplasm. The cytoplasmic effect of MET on tiller and ear numb en was not evident in F$_1$ generation, probably because of suppressing effect of heterosis on appearance of tillers or ears. Genetic parameters for the gene action for both tiller and ear number also indicated a lack of mono- or digenic-chromosomal gene effects. The heritability (broad) was very low for both characters. Therefore, it is strongly concluded that the tillering and earing characters of MET line are due to cytoplasmic reasons.

  • Silage yield and nutritional values of a locally collected Korean corn line with high tillering and earing characteristics were investigated at plant densities from 2778 to 8333 plants/ l0a. This line and a non-tillering and nonprolific corn as a check were grown at four plant densities and at three planting dates. The Korean local line abbreviated as MET had the highest dry matter per l0a. The highest dry matter of the MET line compared with the check hybrid was due to the highest dry leaf weight of the MET line. The highest dry leaf weight of the MET line was due to the increased number of tillers of the MET line. Other plant parts such as ear weight, kernel weight and cob weight of the MET line were lower than those of the check hybrid. The dry husk weight per l0a of the MET line was higher than that of the check hybrid, probably due to the increased number of ears in the MET line. The total embryo production per 10 a of the MET line was significantly higher than that of the check hybrid. The increased portion of embryo of the MET line is probably responsible for the higher TON values of the MET line. No interaction between variety x planting dates or planting density was found, indicating that the MET line and check hybrid were both the same in effects of planting dates and densities. Both line and hybrid showed the highest dry matter production when the planting density was high and planting dates was early. When silage was made from either MET line or check hybrid the nutritional values in terms of crude protein, crude fat, fiber, and ash contents of the MET line were similar to those of the check hybrid. But the TON of the MET line was higher than that of the check hybrid, while the OCP of the MET line lower than that of the check hybrid. Amino acid contents of the MET line were also comparable to those of the check hybrid, while lysine content of the MET line was 10% higher than that of the check hybrid.

  • The objective of the study was to clarify the pattern of fertilizer absorption by tillering hybrid, IK$_1$/IRI. Nangano No.1 hybrid was included as non-tillering check hybrid. Hybrids were grown in pots and the plants were periodically analyzed for their chemical components like nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium. The results obtained indicate that the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium absorbed by IK$_1$/IRI was slightly lower than that absorbed by Nangano No.1, except nitrogen in the maturity of IK$_1$ /IRI. However, no major differences were observed for the calcium and magnesium content between two hybrids. In most cases amount of nitrogen and calcium in the plant of two hybrids seemed to decrease as the plants mature, while amount of those chemicals in the ears increased. Nitrogen efficiency for IK$_1$ /IRI seemed a little lower than that for Nangano No.1.

  • Leaf characteristics of main stem and tiller of IK type maize (IK/ /IRI/B68) were compared with those of Jinjoo Ok hybrid which are not usually tillered. A total of nine leaves from flag leaf to the third or the fourth leaf below ear-bearing node were sampled from each stem or tiller. There was no significant difference in mean leaf length between IK/ /IRI/B68 and Jinjoo Ok. But the mean leaf width of IK/ /IRI/ B68 was about 2 cm narrower than that of Jinjoo Ok. The mean leaf area of the IK/ /IRI/B68 was also smaller than that of Jinjoo Ok due to the narrower leaf width. There were not significant differences in mean leaf characteristics between main stem and tillers of IK/IRI/B68. The longest leaf was the leaf below the ear-bearing node and the widest leaf was the leaf just above the ear-bearing node. Mean length. width and area of leaf on main stem and tillers were similar. Coefficients of variation calculated for individual leaf indicated that the leaves near the ear-bearing node were more uniform than others. The leaf area measured was significantly greater than that estimated by formular, length x width x 0.75. New constant to estimate leaf area of tillering maize was derived as 0.8.
