  • An experience based training system concerning various fire situations which may result many casualties has been required to make rapid decision and improve the responsiveness. Recently, the necessity of virtual reality (VR) based training system which can replace a dangerous full-scale fire training and be easily adopted to the training or evaluation process is increasing. This study constructed tile virtual environment according to pre-defined scenarios, utilized the FDS(Fire Dynamics Simulator), three dimensional computational fire analysis program, to derive numerically simulated data on the propagation of fire. Finally, by visualizing the realistic fire and smoke behavior through virtual reality technique and implementing real-time interaction, we developed a VR-based fire training simulator. Also, in order to ensure the sense for tile real of a virtual world and reaI-time performance at the same time, we proposed appropriate data processing and space search algorithms, demonstrate d the value of proposed method through experiments.

  • A great amount of fly ash, which is a waste from a thermal power plant, has not been appropriately recycled until now. Landfill of flay ash causes environmental pollution and enormous economic costs. In this study, manufacturing of architectural ceramic tile was investigated replacing fly ash with clay raw material. The properties of porcelain tile was analyzed after manufacturing porcelain tile with mineral based glaze and fast firing process. In particular, the effect of the fly ash addition on the properties of ceramic tile was investigated by increasing the amount of limestone addition. Porcelain tile with fly ash showed excellent bending strength, water absorption, warping and abrasion resistance. However, a significant decrease in durability was observed through the autoclave test. Addition of limestone increased the water absorption, twisting and hydration expansion of the ceramic tile, but it was confirmed that the durability of the ceramic tile with fly ash was greatly improved. In conclusion, recycled architectural ceramic tiles, which can meet domestic construction standards, could be manufactured with the addition of fly ash and limestone.

  • Various spatial data are utilized, through geographic information system, for the process to make a decision related to space. Generally, spatial data is large in quantity and it costs high and takes quite a long time for producing and maintaining it. An existing spatial data management system, tile-based one, for digital map manages spatial data being separated by a uniform data unit called tile. These systems can be implemented easily but have many problems such as they can directly store and manage feature included in tile. Therefore, in this paper, we suggest a feature-based spatial data management system for digital map. The proposed system is able to store and manage spatial data in the unit of feature directly. Hence this system is able to immediately update any change in the data and to supply users with the updated data without any delay. The proposed system can not only support a function of data input, management, supplying and update but also support unity origin coordinate conversion, UFID creation, feature unifying, feature dividing and metadata input which is not supported by the existing tile-based system. The proposed system can easily manage spatial data and can increase efficiency in processing and application.

  • With the advent of submarine detection technology using low-frequency active sonar there is a call for a new submarine stealth device that can replace the existing passive anechoic tiles. Proposed in this study is a low-frequency echo reduction technique based on active impedance matching, which employs a tile projector designed to cover a wide area such as the surface of a ship. To judge the feasibility of the active impedance matching technique finite-element simulations of low-frequency echo reduction are performed. Based on the analysis, a tile projector is designed, fabricated, and tested in an acoustic tank for its low-frequency echo reduction performance.

  • A numerical simulation has been performed for the penetration of a long-rod penetrator into a metal block (ceramic-tile-inserted 4340-steel plate). The impact velocity is 1.5km/s at a normal incidence angle. The first two validations are conducted for a semi-infinite block measuring the depth of penetration (DOP). The material model of ceramic is the JH-2 (Johnson-Holmquist) model. The predicted DOP values are in close agreement with the experimental data. Then, the primary simulation is performed by varying the position of the confined ceramic tile for three types of thickness of ceramic tile. The residual velocity, residual mass and residual kinetic energy of the long-rod are obtained from the simulation. Based on these predicted values, the trend of the ballistic performance of the protective structure is estimated. In addition, the mass efficiency is calculated in order to determine the performance of the ceramic-tile-inserted metal block. Finally, the optimum protective structure is identified.

  • Recently, there is an emerging need for parallel UHD video processing, and the usage of computing systems that have an asymmetric processor such as ARM big.LITTLE is actively increasing. Thus, a new parallel UHD video processing method that is optimized for the asymmetric multicore systems is needed. This paper proposes a novel HEVC tile partitioning method for parallel processing by analyzing the computational power of asymmetric multicores. The proposed method analyzes (1) the computing power of asymmetric multicores and (2) the regression model of computational complexity per video resolution. Finally, the model (3) determines the optimal HEVC tile resolution for each core and partitions/allocates the tiles to suitable cores. The proposed method minimizes the gap in the decoding time between the fastest CPU core and the slowest CPU core. Experimental results with the 4K UHD official test sequences show average 20% improvement in the decoding speedup on the ARM asymmetric multicore system.

  • In recent years, the use of high-resolution tiled display system which does not have restrictions on the size of the screen and implements various layout of tile is increasing in order to evaluate the digital mock-up in physical scale or explore large engineering data set in detail. In this study, we developed multi-channel distributed visualization system which provides a virtual reality-based visual contents using 3D open-source graphics engine. Efficient data structures and exchange methods were proposed as a scene synchronization technology in PC cluster environments. DLP-Cube based tiled visualization system which provides $5{\times}2$ layout of display wall was developed and we validated our approach using this system. In addition, we introduced integrated control program that administrates PC cluster environment in remote and controls the layout of display channels.

  • To build a spatial database from digital maps, it is necessary to rebuild a seamless-map with discrete tile-based digital maps. The sequential merge methods have the disadvantage of degenerating concurrency. In this paper, we consider the implementation of the system based on modified 2PC protocol to retain the concurrent merge. As the engineers share the merge through the system, they can concurrently proceed to merge by negotiation.

  • Plant-based cultural assets using straw and grass as household goods of our people's have been used as indispensable tools for practical living for a very long time. However, only a limited number of artifacts were unearthed so far due to tile fragility of the material. For this reason, research on plant-based cultural properties had close to no progress, and the appropriateness of the PEG method, high-grade alcohol method, alcohol--ether-resin method, and Paraloid B-72 used in preserving plant-based cultural properties has not been sufficiently investigated. Therefore, this study examined the weight change rate by applying the methods of Primal MC-76 and vacuum freeze-drying used mostly as a earth-layer hardening material among PEG and acrylic resin, which are applied widely for preservation of waterlogged archaeological wood, as a means to preserve plant-based cultural properties along with the examination of the subject material, and an experiment was also performed on moisture absorption. The findings as a result were, first, the plant-based material being studied was found to be Typha (Typha orientalis Presl). Secondly, the weight change experiment applying $PEG\#400$ and $PEG\#4000$ confirmed a steady increase of weight if PEG -2Step is used for treatment. Third, in preserving all subject materials with soil, treatment with $PEG\#4000$, Primal MC-76, and vacuum freeze-drying showed that tile vacuum freeze-drying method resulted in the largest or $20\%$ reduction in weight, while Primal MC-76 resulted in $18\%$ and $PEG\#4000$ in $8\%$ of weight reduction. It was concluded that, considering the stability of soil measurement, this came to be because resin permeation was carried out along with tile drying process. Fourth, the weight changes were found to be around $10\%$ in various humidity conditions after the preservation treatment. The greatest weight change rate was seen in the case of $PEG\#4000$, particularly having chemicals gush out in a high humidity (RH $84\%$ or higher) environment. In the case of Primal MC-76 and vacuum freeze-drying methods, $6\~8\%$ weight changes were detected, and the lowest weight change was found in the case of the vacuum freeze-drying method. Fifth, as for color changes after treatment, blackening occurred most strongly with $PEG\#4000$, while Primal MC-76 and vacuum freeze-drying manifested colors closest to dry straw or grass. However, the texture of straw was not very evident in the case of Primal MC-76, due to a glossy surface, but vacuum freeze-drying was found to offer tile best result in terms of texture. Putting together the results of the above experiments, vacuum freeze-drying presented after being treated with PEG2-Step the most stabilized changes in weight, while it offered the smallest change in color as well.
