  • It is well known that the properties of concrete such as the compressive strength, water permeability, water tightness and durability are affected by micro-structure in hardened cement paste. Especially, for durability of concrete, watertightness of cementitious materials is the most critical property among various properties. Recently, many types of material such as organic and/or inorganic materials are used for watertightness of concrete. In this study, we examined the effect of fluorine-based emulsion on watertightness property. And we also discussed the change of microstructure and formation of hydrates in hardened cement paste by the addition of fluorine-based emulsion. Cement paste with fluorine-based emulsion showed improvement of watertightness by the surface activation of cement paste and by formation of $CaF_2$ fine crystals in cement pore structure.

  • The objective of this study was to determine the perception of monosodium glutamate (MSG) contents in eating out menu and MSG symptom complex. Respondents in the Seoul area were surveyed from Feb. 10 to 20, 2014. The results are summarized as follows. The 51.3% of respondents were male and 48.7% of them were female. As for age, 73.5% of respondents were 20~24 years old. Favorite menu of respondents' eating out were Korean food (57.8%), Western food (17.6%), Fast food (9.5%), Japanese food (6.2%), Chinese food (5.2%). Male respondents favored Korean food (62.4%), Fast food (10.2%) and Western food (9.6%), but female respondents favored Korean food (53.0%), Western food (26.2%) and Fast food (8.7%). The 48.7% of respondents considered Chinese food containing high amount of MSG. A few respondents (18.6%) recognized to usage amount of MSG as consideration factor to select eating out menu. However, most respondents (55.2%) perceived harmful to take excessive amount of MSG contained food. The 37.9% of respondents had experience of MSG symptom complex after eating out. Respondents' self recognized MSG symptom complex were thirstiness (84.5%), drowsiness (55.7%), weakness (34.5%), nausea (30.2%), tightness (20.7%) and headache (14.7%). The 19.9% of respondents like MSG contained food. The reason for disliking MSG contained food were 'bad for health' (66.3%) and 'MSG symptom' (33.2%). The reason for liking MSG contained food were 'good taste (83.6%) and 'habitual eating' (14.8%). The result of this study showed that some sensitive people have unpleasant reaction after eating out. Therefore, it is suggested that natural flavor enhancer may develop to replace the use of MSG.

  • Effects of normal (non-waxy) and waxy millet flours on properties of sponge cake were examined. Total dietary fiber contents of normal and waxy millets were 5.04 and 5.12%, respectively, while that of soft wheat flour was 2.23%. Alkaline water retention capacity value generally increased with addition of normal and waxy millet flours, whereas peak, minimum, and final viscosities decreased. Mixing time and mixing height decreased with addition of millet flour. Lightness of cake crust increased with addition of normal millet flour, whereas it decreased with addition of waxy millet flour, tightness of cake crumb decreased as the amount of normal and waxy millet flours increased. Increasing proportions of normal and waxy millet flours resulted in significantly decreased loaf volume. Replacement of 10% wheat flour by both normal and waxy millet flours did not significantly affect characteristics of sponge cake, but addition of more than 20% millet flour resulted in significant differences in quality characteristics.

  • The purpose of this study is to estimate the packing friction of power-operated valve in nuclear power plants. The roll of packing in valve is preventing leakage through stem. Packing friction is highly depend on gland nut tightness which means higher reliability in sealing is lower operability. For the estimation of friction, we used statistical analysis and experimental analysis. In experimental approach, we have performed packing fY test and applied it to valve field test. In statistical approach, we have used 10 years DB of safety-related valve in nuclear power plant and analyzed packing friction based on confidence interval of sample. The comparison of two results shows that statistical analysis for packing friction are more accurate than fY analysis even though both approach have error compared to measured value but we confirmed that statistical approach is proper way to estimate packing friction.

  • purpose of this study was to conduct status survey on existing shelter facilities for residents and use it as basic material to plan and design improved shelter facilities in the future. As the result, first, although existing shelter facilities are judged to have been designed in consideration only of the protection from high explosive shells, actual protection capability is significantly low against high explosive shells when exit direction and protection capabilities of main entrances were investigated. Second, all the 7 facilities did not have air purifier with filters installed for the air that flows into the inside from outside and since the height of air exhausts and intake pipes in the outside are also close to the earth, there are possibilities that heavy contaminated air can flow into the inside. Third, although some facilities have anti-explosion doors installed, it is impossible to use them as chemical, biological and radiological (CBR) shelter because of improper installation of openings and anti-explosion valves as well as poor plumbing that cannot ensure air-tightness and poor finish of piping penetration.

  • For the proper design and management of underground storage cavern, groundwater flow around cavern should be analyzed. Since this flow is influenced by spatial nonuniformity of hudraulic conductivity, the two-dimensional finite element flow model incorporating stochastic concepts was developed to analyze influences due to this nonuniformity. Monte Carlo technique was applied to obtain an approximate solution for two-dimensional, steady flow in a stochastically defined nonuniform medisu. For this purpose, the values of hydraulic conductivity were generated for each element with known mean and standard deviations. The uncertainty in model prediction depends on both the nonuniformity in hydraulic conductivity and the natures of the flow system such as water curtain and boundary condition. Therefore the uncertainties in predicted hydraulic head and gradient are the greatest where the mean hydraulic gradients are relatively large and far from the boundaries. Especially, we relate these uncertainties with well known gas tightness condition.

  • Objectives: 1) To determine mercury levels in urine samples from garbage workers in Southern Thailand, and 2) to describe the association between work characteristics, work positions, behavioral factors, and acute symptoms; and levels of mercury in urine samples. Methods: A case-control study was conducted by interviewing 60 workers in 5 hazardous-waste-management factories, and 60 matched non-exposed persons living in the same area of Southern Thailand. Urine samples were collected to determine mercury levels by cold-vapor atomic absorption spectrometer mercury analyzer. Results: The hazardous-waste workers' urinary mercury levels (10.07 ${\mu}g/g$ creatinine) were significantly higher than the control group (1.33 ${\mu}g/g$ creatinine) (p < 0.001). Work position, duration of work, personal protective equipment (PPE), and personal hygiene, were significantly associated with urinary mercury level (p < 0.001). The workers developed acute symptoms - of head-aches, nausea, chest tightness, fatigue, and loss of consciousness at least once a week - and those who developed symptoms had significantly higher urinary mercury levels than those who did not, at p < 0.05. A multiple regression model was constructed. Significant predictors of urinary mercury levels included hours worked per day, days worked per week, duration of work (years), work position, use of PPE (mask, trousers, and gloves), and personal hygiene behavior (ate snacks or drank water at work, washed hands before lunch, and washed hands after work). Conclusion: Changing garbage workers' hygiene habits can reduce urinary mercury levels. Personal hygiene is important, and should be stressed in education programs. Employers should institute engineering controls to reduce urinary mercury levels among garbage workers.

  • In the perspective of saving energy in buildings, high performance of insulation and air tightness for improving the heating and the cooling efficiency has brought the positive effect in an economical view. However, these building energy saving technologies cause the lack of ventilation, which is the direct cause of increasing the indoor contaminants, and it is also very harmful to residents because they spend over 90% of their time in the indoor area. Therefore, the ventilation is important to keep indoor environment clean and it can also save energy consumption. In this study, a HEPA type breathing wall is designed as a passive ventilation system to collect airborne particles and to supply fresh outdoor air. To make fine porous structures, polymer nano fibers which were made by electro spinning method are used as a precursor. The nano fibers are coated with SiO2 nano particles and finally the HEPA type breathing wall is made by sintering in the electric furnace at $300\sim500^{\circ}C$. The pressure drops of nano ceramic structure are 8.2, 25.5 and 44.9 mmAq at the face velocity of 2.0, 5.9 and 8.8 cm/s, respectively. Also the water vapor permeability is $3.6g/m^2{\cdot}h{\cdot}mmHg$. In this research, the porous nano ceramic structures are obtained and the possibility for the usage of a material for HEPA type breathing wall can be obtained.

  • In modern buildings, the air-tightness and insulation for energy saving resulted in degradation of Indoor Air Quality(IAQ). It has brought out new diseases such as New Building Syndrome(NBS) and Sick Building Syndrome(SBS) to the tenants of such buildings. As a result, researches on the Dynamic Breathing Building(DBB) are being undertaken to minimize energy loss as well as to improve IAQ. DBB is a state-of-the-art technology to build channels inside the wall so that air migrates between indoor and outdoor, which improves insulation performance and IAQ. This study attempts to evaluate the improvement of DBB employed in real buildings. As analyzing tools, IAQ improvement and particle degradation while were evaluated while the required indoor ventilation rate was satisfied. DBB were installed in the twin test cells at Korea Institute of Energy Research(KIER). From the test, IAQ was compared with outdoor air base on the concentration of particle matter(PM10). As a results, the concentration of particle dust (PM10) within the breathing walls was reduced by 80% at 0.7 ACH, 67% at 2 ACH, 63% at 3 ACH respectively. As ACH is higher, Dnamic Isulation(DI) and normal wall permit more PM10 particles being infiltrated.

  • Solvolysis of $p-CH_3, p-H, p-Cl and p-NO_2$-benzenesulfonyl chlorides have heen studied in MeOH-MeCN mixtures. A nonlinear Hammett plot with a ratio order of p-NO_2 > p-CH_3 > p-H > p-Cl was obtained; the reaction was thought to proceed by an S_N1-S_N2 borderline mechanism. In all cases the reactivity was a maximum at 90∼95%(v) methanol, whereas methanol monomer selectivity defined as fi = \frac{k1}{ki}i (k1; observed pseudo-first order rate constant: ki; hypothetical rate constant for MeOH solution having the same polymer structure as in the pure MeOH) was a maximum at 80% methanol with a decreasing order of fi as p-NO_2 > p-Cl > p-H > p-CH_3.$ This was interpreted as the decrease in tightness of transition state; the larger the fi, the tighter is the MeOH attached to the substrate, and hence the more susceptible the substrate becomes to the approaching monomer methanol.
