  • The simulation results using i- V relationship of non-Darcy flow through tide embankment by Li et al.(1998) agree well to the observed data. The use of i- V relationship is applicable to the engineering practice and the correct input of porosity is necessary. The non-Darcy flow based on the pipe flow and Taylor's definition for mean hydraulics radius in rockfill material is applicable to the block and caisson materials. The correct calculation of flow through tide embankment enables the accurate calculation of velocity at final closing gap and the prediction of inner water level after tide embankment construction as well.

  • Seasonal characteristics of water quality and effect of the freshwater discharge during open the tide embankment in Haechang Bay were evaluated. In the freshwater, where interior of the tide embankment, COD and Chl-a exceeded about 4mg/L and $10mg/m^3$, respectively, independent of season, while in the seawater they showed high values in April and July in contrast to the other period due to input of freshwater and increase of phytoplankton, respectively. The content of seawater inorganic nitrogen maintained a relatively high level at inner part of the bay, whereas high values of inorganic phosphorus content was distributed at all over the bay. The limiting factor for algal growth was nitrogen with respect to the N/P ratio. The compass of influence by the freshwater discharge in April was quite different with water pollutants. As a result of the salinity variation with time, the freshwater extended strongly to offshore from the surface layer without mixing with depth when open the tide embankment, and reached within about one hour at a station which is 3.5km from the tide embankment. To effective water quality management of Haechang Bay, discharge rate and pollutant loads should be controlled.

  • This research is about the optical characteristic of red tide which is collected from Nam-Hae for basic research of red tide remote sensing technique development. 21 kinds of red tide organisms are cultivated to investigate optical characteristic of them on the level of laboratory, and chlorophyll specific absorption coefficient($a^*$) and backscattering coefficient($b_b^*$) are estimated by using spectrophotometer. Absorption spectrums according to species are appeared diversely from 0.005 to 0.06 (mg/ $m^2$), and the shapes of spectrums are also different. The range of $b_b^*$ are appeared $10^{-2}{\sim}10^{-4}$ mg/ $m^2$, which have around 100 times differences between species, and the shape of spectrum also have significant difference between species. These results are able to use as an input data of inverse model from ocean color.

  • The ichthyofauna and passing efficiency of fishways were surveyed in Geumgang estuary from May to October in 2009. The fishes collected were classified into 24 species, 23 genera belonging to 8 families. These 24 species consist of 17 freshwater fish species, 3 migration fish species and 4 peripheral freshwater fish species. Seasonal function of fishways showed the migration from May to June and returning to the reservoir of fishes be washed out to sea when sluice gate open by rainfall in July and August. Most of the fishes catched in fishways moved from middle tide to high tide except for July. Fishes ascended fishways between the middle ebb tide and the ebb tide only July, because small freshwater swim against the fishway for leaching the reservoir through the newly formed flow when the water level at the fishway kept dropping. Small fishes that body length less than 200 mm mainly used gabion type fishways and fishes over 200 mm utilized a cascade type fishways. Based on the total individuals collected, the efficiency of the fishway was 1 % for the anadromous fish and over 80 % for freshwater fish. Therefore, it is concluded that ecological function of the fishway in the Geumgang estuary dike be very important not only for fish migration but also freshwater fishes's returning.

  • The rover positioning is performed by estimating the baseline vector components in doubledifference positioning mode. This means that relative displacement due to the tide effects can be neglected when the distance between the reference and rover station is relatively short. However, the tide effects should be carefully modeled and removed as the baseline length gets longer. In this study, the relative displacement over the Korean Peninsula due to tide effects are examined through the numerical analysis. The results show that the tide modeling is required for the precise GPS positioning at cm-level accuracy.

  • In the southeast sea of Korea, the cold water is concentrated in every summer, showing in abnormal oceanic conditions. Cold water occurred in the southeast sea is dominantly influenced by wind, which occurs when the south wind is continuously blowing for 3 to 7 days more. In this study, water temperature, wind speed and direction data of KMA, KHOA and KHNP, Chlorophyll-a of COMS/GOCI, GHRSST Level 4 SST of NASA, and red tide alert data of the National Institute of Fisheries Science were used to analyze the correlation between occurrence and change of the cold water and the red tide of Cochlodinium polykrikoides. The upwelling cold water mass showed a characteristic of moving northward along the current and occurrence a high concentration of chlorophyll along the water mass. Also, when the warm current were strong, the characteristic of red tide showed a northward moving.

  • The water quality of the laver bed at Yongwon Ri, Changwon Gun was investigated during the spring and neap tide in March 1970. The effect of tide on the contents of various chemical constituents was irregular and the variation ranges of the contents were narrow. The pH value during flood and ebb tide was a constant of 8.2. The chlorosity range varied from 19.15 to 19.33g/l, the difference of 0.18g/l being comparatively small for coastal waters. The nutrient salts contents varied irregulary with the change in tide, but nitrite and soluble iron were not detected. In local distribution, chlorosity and silicate- silicon contents were found to be more at Sts. 1, 2 and 3 in the eastern area than at Sts. 4, 5 and 6 in the western area, wheras nitrate and ammonia contents were found to be more at Sts. 4, 5 and 6. The nitrate content was especially high, being twice as much as that at Sts. 1, 2 and 3 in the eastern area. In the spring tide, chlorosity was found, on the average, to be as much as 0.06g/l higher than in the neap tide, but the contents of nutrient salts were higher in the neap tide, especially the nitrate content was twice as much. When compared with other selected local laver beds, i.e., the tidal flats of the Nackdong and Somjin rivers, and of Wan Do Gun, the chlorosity level was highest but the nutrient salts contents level was, in general, slightly lower and the variation ranges narrow in the laver bed at Yongwon ri. The nitrate content, in particular was one tenth smaller than the others.

  • In order to understand the fluctuation characteristics of water temperature in August, water temperature, tide level, air temperature and wind data were analyzed using a power spectrum and coherence analysis for a region off the southern coast of Korea. Spectrum analysis showed that the water temperature and tide level in Wando, Goheung, Yeosu, Tongyeong and Masan have peaks over a semi-diurnal period. Coherence showed that water temperature was affected by tide in Wando, Goheung, Yeosu and Tongyeong where tidal range is relatively high. In Masan and Busan, where tidal range is relatively low, however, the tide did not affect water temperature significantly. In particular, wind was the most important factor in relation to water temperature in Masan. Time lags were calculated from phase. In Wando, water temperature decreased 1.5 hrs after a flood tide began. Water temperature decreased 0.3 hrs after a flood tide began in Goheung and Tongyeong. In Masan, water temperature increased 3 hrs after a south wind began. Water temperature in Yeosu was affected by tide, but air temperature, tide and wind in Busan affected water temperature very little.

  • Seapage condition by sea water may appears on sea dike due to the gap of tidal, which generated by the sealevel repeatedly moves up and down result of the change of tidal level. In this study, apparatus was developed to apply similitude after setting the critical section. It was found that the soil loss was dramatically increased by increasing hydraulic gradient step by step. Also, to understand the change of seadike which considered the changes of the change of tidal level and inside sealevel, it was executed the experiments which divided the sea level condition of inside by continually changes the sealevel difference which is outside of the high tide and ebb tide.

  • Satellite radar interferometry data shows a strong coherent signal on oyster sea farms where artificial structures installed on the bottom. We obtained 21 highly coherent interferograms from eleven JERS-1 SAR data sets despite of large orbital baseline (~2 km) or large temporal baseline (~l year). The phases observed in sea farms are probably induced by double bouncing on sea surface, and consequently reveal a tide height variation. To restore the absolute sea level changes we counted the number of wrapping by exploiting the intensity of backscattering. Backscattering intensity is closely correlated with the change in water surface height, while interferometry gives the detailed variation within the limit of 2$\pi$ (or 15.3 cm). Comparing the radar measurements with the tide gauge records yielded a correlation coefficient of 0.96 and an ms error of 6.0 cm. The results demostrate that radar interferometry is promising to measure sea level.
