The study investigates mental models of scientifically gifted, middle school students when it comes to tides. This was done by analyzing facet of conceptual types for two contexts. We carried out two performance tasks of tide with different context. A large number of students showed different conceptual types by context. As a result of analyzing facet of conceptual types by context, there was a slight difference in content-specific facet, but a remarkable one in strategic facet. We classified four mental models about tide by configuring facets of conceptual types: (1) Tide model (2) Force model (3) Phase model (4) Hybrid model. The Tide model is scientifically accepted model, but Force model and Phase model are incorrect models, and Hybrid model is mixed model. In cases of Force model and Phase model, conceptual types concur with each other, but these types of students comprehend tides as a result of joined forces of Moon & Sun and phase change of Moon, respectively. Arranging low mental models in proportional order, Tide model (45.0%), Hybrid model (30.0%), Force model (12.5%), and Phase model (7.5%).

In order to understand the tide and current around the sea route of Jinhae and Masan passages, tide measurement and 2D numerical model experiments of tidal current and residual flow were carried out. Tide is composed of 84% of semi-diurnal tide, 11% of diurnal tide and 4% of shallow water tide, respectively. Phase lags of the major components for the tide around the study area have little differences. The flows are reversing on the whole, but have rotational form around Jamdo Island, south of Masan passage in spring tide and Ungdo Island, north of Masan passage in middle and neap tide. Current flows the speed of 50 cm/s in the sea areas near small islands, 5 cm/s in Jinhae harbor, Hangam bay and near Jinhae industrial complex and 20-30 cm/s in Jinhae passage, Budo channel and Masan passage. Tide-induced topographical eddies are formed near small islands, but few eddies exist and the flow rate of less than 5 cm/s tidal residual current formed in Jinhae and Masan passages. The flows in Jinhae and Masan passage give a good condition for a passage into Jinhae and Masan harbor.
Red tide(harmful algae) in the Korean Coastal Waters has a given a great damage to the fishery every year. However, the aim of our study understands the influence of meteorological factors (air and water temperature, precipitation, sunshine, solar radiation, winds) relating to the mechanism of red tide occurrence and monitors red tide by satellite remote sensing, and analyzes the potential area for red tide occurrence by GIS. The meteorological factors have directly influenced on red tide formation. Thus, We want to predict and apply to red tide formation from statistical analyses on the relationships between red tide formation and meteorological factors. In future, it should be realized the near real time monitoring for red tide by the development of remote sensing technique and the construction of integrated model by the red tide information management system (the data base of red tide - meteorological informations). Finally our purpose is support to the prediction information for the possible red tide occurrence by coastal meteorological information and contribute to reduce the red tide disaster by the prediction technique for red tide.

In order to predict coastal environmental changes caused by coastal development and effectively manage marine environment, the exact information about water level changes and hydrodynamic circulation is essential. However, most of the environmental impact assessment has been using only limited tidal constituents in the numerical tide model to predict the real tide and tidal currents caused by the synthesis of many other tidal constituents, which causes an error in the environmental impact assessment. In this study, a method, which uses the limited tidal constituents at the offshore open boundaries and the observed tide at the inner or nearby point to predict the real tide in the model domain accurately, is suggested. Tidal and tidal currents predicted by the suggested method agreed well with the observations.
As the tideland reclamation is done on a large scale these days, construction work is active in the coastal areas. Facilities in the coastal areas must be built with the tide characteristics taken into consideration. Thus the tide characteristics affect the overall reclamation plan. The analysis of the tide data boils down to a harmonic analysis of the hourly changes of long-term tide data and extraction of unharmonic coefficients from the results. Since considerable amount of tide data of the West Coast are available, the existing data can be collected and can be used to obtain the temporal changes of the tide by being fitted into the tide prediction model. The goal of this thesis lies in assessing whether the mean sea level used in the field agrees with the analysis results from the long-term observation data obtained with their homogeneity guaranteed. To achieve this goal, the research was conducted as follows. First the present conditions of the observation stations, the land level standard, and the sea level standard were analyzed to set up a time series model formula for representing them. To secure the homogeneity of the time series, each component was separated. Lastly the mean sea level used in the field was assessed based on the results obtained form the analysis of the time series.

Environmental impact on a land reclamation project, Hwaong tidal barrier was studied using the dispersion and advection model to predict the influence of polluted water discharged from freshwater reservior. The simulation results show that the distribution of concentration by influence of polluted water discharged during a tidal cycle appeared to be extinguished at atmost all points after two tidal cycle. Peak concentration near the sluice gate is found out to be higher during the spring tide than neap tide. Equi-concentration contour line appeared to distributed a longer according to line of sea dike in spring tide than neap tide. The reasons is because influence by currents of northwest direction is a stronger, compared to spring tide and neap tide in the flood tide.

The TIDE, nonlinear finite element model for the simulation of tidal analysis in a shal- low ooastal area was tested for its applicability at the Saemankeum day. Calibration of the TIDE model has been carried out using the six observed field data collected at five locations within the region for tidal velocity. Verification tests have been done using the six observed field data and four data o- tained from the hydraulic model test for the tidal velocity and elevation. Since the simula- tion results for the tidal elevation at Kunsan outer port by the TIDE model are well agreed with the results from the tidal table for one month, it is proved that the TIDE model may be used effectively to predict the tidal movement in the Saemankeum bay for a longer period.
Tidal currents and tidal residual currents in Chinhae Bay are investigated by the field observations and hydraulic experiments during the spring tide and neap tide. The horizontal and vertical scales of the model are l/2,000 and 1/159, respectively. The hydraulic model results roughly coincide with the field data. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the central channel of Chinhae Bay are strong as about 90 and 30cm/s respectively, and strong tidal residual currents take place. Maximum tidal currents during the spring tide and neap tide in the western and northern part of the bay are weak as below 30 and 10cm/s respectively, and also tidal residual currents are weak. Tidal residual currents rotating clockwise occur in the central part of the bay. Northward tidal residual currents in the northern part of Kajo-do are predominant, whereas southward ones in the southern part of Kajo-do are remarkable. The surface currents in the bay depend strongly on the wind and river flow, and it seems to be remarkable during the neap tide.

In this study, the behavior of dredged soil was measured by repeated tide and analyzed the change of settlements and cone penetration resistance by centrifuge model about dredged soil of Kunsan-Janghang site that maximum tidal range is 7.4m. Consequently the settlements of dredged soil by repeated tide in the 2nd month was 0.489 m. After 12th month, the total settlements was 0.524 m in the model. It meaned the settlements of dredged soil by repeated tide in the 2th month was 80% of the settlements. Also, with the lapse of time, cone penetration resistance increased centrifuge model test for catching the strength change of dredged soil by repeated tide. After 10th month, there were not almost changes. cone penetration resistance in 10th month was measured more 3.5~5.6 times than that in its early stages. Also, with the lapse of time, cone penetration resistance increased almost linearly. And, when we surveyed the relation between cone penetration resistance and time, as depth increased, cone penetration resistance rose.
