Effect of the Freshwater Discharge on Seawater and Sediment Environment in a Coastal Area in Goheung County, South Korea

  • Seasonal characteristics of water and sediment qualities and potential effects of the freshwater discharge from a small tide embankment interior in a coastal area in Goheung county were investigated from May to September in 2012. Chemical oxygen demand values (COD) were mostly higher than 2 mg/L in summer ebb tide, which exceed the standard value of water quality criteria II of acceptable level for aquaculture activities. Nitrogen and phosphorus were found as the limiting nutrients for algae growth in summer and fall and in spring, respectively. Nitrogen was the limiting nutrient for diatom growth in the whole studied period. The sudden high values of COD, ammonia, dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorus (DIP) were found in water sample collected from station 5 which located in front of the tide embankment sluice gate during spring ebb tide. The freshwater discharge form the tide embankment interior maybe affected the survey areas during a short time interval. Mean values of eutrophication index of the surveyed coastal region in spring, summer and fall were all bigger than 1. Water quality was mostly considered at level II which acceptable for aquaculture activities. Sediment quality in this study was generally in the range of standard for fisheries environment.

  • Arrangement of the facilities for improving harbor functions depends on sea and land conditions such as the ship's arrival and departure conditions, waves and tide. And the plan and the size of the facilities depend much on harbor and marine environment condition such as cargo quantity, ship size, ship traffic and seawater circulation. Among these, waves have so much effect on a breakwater design that it is the most important to understand their characteristics and to apply them to breakwater design. Therefore, to analyze the effect of waves characteristics over a rubble mound breakwater, we have calculated wave pressure by using numerical analysis at each tide level and have analyzed the effect of wave pressure on structure stability by conducting the stability analysis with the wave pressure. As a result, it is found that during low and mean tide level time the biggest wave pressure is estimated near calm water level. But during high tide time, the biggest wave pressure is estimated in front of capping. And the stability analysis indicates also that a structure is most unstable when low tide time wave pressure is acting on. After reviewing the stability of a structure by applying vertical and horizon wave forces, it is concluded that safety factor is lower than ordinary time(max. about 15%), is also reviewed when designing a rubble mound breakwater.

크리징 모형을 이용한 서해 설계 기준 조위면의 추정에 관한 연구 (The Estimation of Design Tide Level over the West Coast of Korea Based on the Kriging Model)

  • 4개 주요 검조소의 기본수준점표 설정연혁을 개괄하였다. 이 검조소의 검조의 영점표고, 기본수준고, 그리고 주위기준점(Tidal Bench M막)의 자료를 수집검토하였다. 농어촌진흥공사, 수로국, 항만국 등이 조사한 지역평균 해면고(Local Mean Sea Level)를 비교하여 이들 4개 검조소지점(인천, 군산내.외항, 목포)의 평균해면고로 정의하였다. 기본수준면(DL), 평균해면(MSL), 대조평균만조면(HWOST) 등의 설계조위면을 추정하기 위하여 크리징모형을 소개하였다. 추정한 설계조위면이 표본값을 잘 표현하고 있음을 확인하였다. 이 과정에서 설계조위면의 공간경향이 평가되었으며 설계조위의 획률구조를 대표하는 반-자기분산식 ${\gamma}$(h) 이 얻어졌다. 이 결과에서 설계조위들이 자기상사 특성을 보였다. 즉, 기본수준면과 대조평균만조위의 반-자기분산값은 평균해면의 반-자기분산값의 0.005배였다.

한국 연안 최극 고조위의 매개변수 추정 및 분석 (Parameter Estimation and Analysis of Extreme Highest Tide Level in Marginal Seas around Korea)

  • 연안 및 항만구조물의 설계에서 최극 고조위는 매우 중요한 환경인자이다. 특히, 최극 고조위의 분포정보는 최근 부각되고 있는 신뢰성 설계에 필수적인 요소이다. 본 연구에서는 국립해양조사원에서 제시한 한국연안 주요 23개 검조소의 최극조위자료를 이용하여 극치분포 분석을 수행하였다. 특성분석에 사용된 극치분포함수는 Generalized Extreme Value, Gumbel 그리고 Weibull 분포이며, 각 분포함수의 매개변수는 모멘트법, 최우도법 그리고 확률가중모멘트법 등 3가지방법으로 추정하였다. 또한, 극치분포함수의 적합성은 95% 신뢰도 수준으로 $X^2$ 및 K-S 검정을 실시하였다. 그 결과, 23개 검조소의 최극 고조위는 Gumbel 분포형이 가장 적합한 모형으로 파악되었으며, 최적 추정된 매개변수 및 재현기간별 최극 고조위 정보를 제시하였다. 심 등(1992)이 제시한 인천, 제주, 여수, 부산, 묵호에 대한 극치해면값은 본 논문에서 산정한 결과에 비하여 작게 나타났다.

부산항 조석의 장기 월별 변동 특성 (Long-term Monthly Variations of Tide in Pusan Harbour)

  • The long-term monthly variations of tide with tidal harmonic analysis in Pusan Harbour are investigated. The present spring tidal range decreased 1.4 cm and the variation of phase lag increased than 1974. The high and low water level of yearly mean sea level is show during the February to March and August to September, respectively. It is important to note that the larger lunar elliptic N2 is large in comparison with lunisolar diurnal K1 and principal lunar diurnal O1. The ratios (Correction Factors) of monthly mean sea level and the main 4 tidal constituents are evaluated to correct the shortly (monthly) observed tide for the design of harbour facilities.

하구에서 Two-level 모델에 의한 해수유동 및 확산에 관한 수치실험 (Numerical Experiments on the Hydrodynamic and Diffusion in Estuary by using Two-level Model)

  • Two-level numerical models are formulated to predict the flow pattern, SS(suspended solids) distribution and the behavior of discharged fresh water in estuary, and are applied to the Suyoung River estuary in Pusan, Korea. To verify the application of the models, field observations of tidal current, salinity and 55 were performed during the period of spring tide. Computed upper level velocities by two-level model are in better agreement with observed values than single model. Apart from the magnitude of the velocities, the predicted flow fields at upper level are similar to those obtained at lower level. Upper level velocities in river channel during ebb spring tide are about 2 times stronger than those during flood spring tide due to the discharging flow rate from the Suyoung River. Two-level model results on the salinity and 55 distribution at upper level are compared with the observed ones at the surface. Computed salinity distributions are in good agreement with the observed values, but computed 55 distributions show $6{\~}10$ ppm higher values than the observed ones.

  • 최근water front나 자연형 하천의 개발이 많아지는 가운데 해안에 인접한 하천설계에 있어 일반적으로 기점 홍수위가 만조 시 수위보다 높게 계산되면 조석의 영향을 고려하지 않고 기점 홍수위만으로 수리해석을 하는 경우가 대부분이다. 그러나 본 연구는 기점 홍수위가 만조 시 수위 보다 높더라도 밀려오는 조류의 영향으로 하천 기점 홍수위의 변화를 야기시킬 수 있을 것이라 판단하여 부산의 지방하천인 온천천이 조석현상에 의해 어떤 흐름의 변화가 발생하는지를 Delft-3D를 이용하여 분석하였다. 수치해석 결과 하류 경계조건에 조석영향을 고려하였을 경우 하천의 일정범위까지 수위가 조석의 주기성을 나타내었고 하천 상류방향으로 수위 변동범위가 확대되었다.

시계열 분석 및 수치실험을 통한 완도의 하계 수온분포 (A Study on the Distribution of Summer Water Temperature in Wando Using Time-Series Analysis and Numerical Experiments)

  • 본 연구에서는 완도 해역에서 단기적인 수온의 변화에 영향을 주는 요인을 파악하기 위하여 시계열 분석을 실시하였다. Power spectrum 결과에서 기온은 약 24 hr에서 peak를 보였으나 수온과 조위는 약 12 hr 및 24 hr에서 peak가 나타났다. 수온과 조위의 상관성을 파악하기 위해 coherence 분석을 실시한 결과, 두 변수는 반일주기에서 0.92로 높은 상관성을 보였다. 또한 수온의 시 공간적인 분포를 파악하기 위하여 수치실험을 실시하였다. 대조기에는 최강 낙조와 최강 창조 시의 평균 수온차가 $0.3^{\circ}C$인 반면, 소조기에는 평균 수온차가 $0.13^{\circ}C$로 작았다. 대조기의 수온차가 큰 이유는 비교적 수온이 낮은 외해수가 강한 조류에 의해 창조 시 유입되고 낙조 시 빠져나가기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 전반적으로 수온은 외해보다 연안에서 높게 나타났다. 외해보다 연안은 수심이 얕기 때문에 일사량에 의해 수온이 빠르게 증가하기 때문인 것으로 사료된다.

다층 진단 모델에 의한 광양만의 잔차류 수치 실험 (Numerical simulation of residual currents by diagnostic multi-level model in Kwangyang Bay, Korea)

  • In order to estimate the quantitative roles of the tide induced residual currents, density currents and wind driven currents on the residual currents in Kwangynag Bay Korea, numerical experiments with a diagnostic multi-level model were carried out. Density currents were calculated from the temperature and salinity data observed in January, May, August and November 1998. Anti-clockwise circulations are formed at the western inner part of the bay, the location from the east of Myodo Is. to the south of POSCO Co. and the place between Yeosu peninsula and Namhae Is. from the calculation results of the tide induced residual currents. Velocities of the density currents are less than 3cm/s at the western inner part of the bay and about 5cm/s at the southern entrance of the bay. Density currents get strong in summer and weak in autumn. Wind driven currents at the surface layer flow in the directions of the given winds which are the daily mean winds when the temperature and salinity observations are carried out. In the middle and lower layers, however the wind driven currents flow in the opposite direction to the surface currents as supplementary currents. The surface wind driven currents are greater than the tide induced residual currents or the density currents. The calculated residual currents including the tide induced residual currents, density currents and wind driven currents agree with the results of the current observations approximately. In the Bay, the wind driven currents affect on the residual currents greatestly and tide induced residual currents and density currents do in the second place and the third place.

Local Movement of Shorebirds for Roosting between Ganghwa and Yeongjong Island in the West Coast of Korea

  • Movement of shorebirds for roosting was studied to find their response to insufficient roosting area on Ganghwa Island. It was taken from two kinds of aspects of population fluctuation and direct observation of movement from March to October in 2002. Based on the data from their weekly fluctuation and flight observation, shorebirds on Ganghwa Island moved to roosts located far away. Shorebirds feeding at southern Ganghwa Island moved to Yeongjong Island for roosting during the spring tide period. High tide count showed that the number of shorebirds on Yeongjong Island increased strikingly, while the number of birds on Ganghwa Island decreased. As the tide level increased, the number of shorebirds on Ganghwa Island decreased in the fall migrating season (r$_{s}$= -0.81, p<0.001), whereas that on Yeongjong Island was not correlated significantly. Direct observation showed that some of the birds on the upper tidal zone of Ganghwa Island moved directly to the northern mudflat of Yeongjong Island during the flowing tide or dropped by flat zone on Seondu-ri. Insufficient coastal wetlands on Ganghwa Island induced them to move away from the island for roosting place and to endure costly flight energy expenditure. The development of wetlands on the southern Yeongjong Island would make them have no place available to roosts. Therefore this study proposes that shorebird roosts on Ganghwa Island should be created to conserve their habitat.t.
