Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Due to the high tidal range of up to 9.7m on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned and constructed. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with a multi-arrangement is necessary in the ocean. The rotor, which initially converts the energy, is a very important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system, and its performance is determined by various design variables. The power generation is strongly dependent on the size of the rotor and the incoming flow velocity. However, the interactions between devices also contribute significantly to the total power capacity. Therefore, rotor performance considering the interaction problems needs to be investigated for generating maximum power in a specific field. This paper documents the characteristics of wake induced by horizontal axis tidal current power turbine.
Tidal power can use conventional technology to extract energy from the tides. It is usually best deployed in areas where there i s a high tical range which includes Western and Southern coastal areas in Korea. However, to extract tical energy, a barrage across an estuary or a bay is to be constructed that is now very hard due to severe environmental impact on local estuary. The recent technology of application of tidal stream provides a new window to extract power minimizing the adverse environmental impact Tidal stream technology which directly exploits these currents is relatively new but is presently generating considerable interest Turbine rotors can be used to extract energy from the flows. Prototype devices currently on test in the UK include the 300kW SeaFlow turbine. In this paper, the recent technology and research on ocean tical stream power are addressed

In Korea, Yellow sea which is located west side of korea has a between 2.8 to 8.0 m tidal range. So, Vessel Traffic Support System(VTSS) is designed to provide predicted water level, tidal elevation and tide induced current. VTSS has a 58 tidal constituents from 1 year tide observed data and 23 tidal current constituents from 1 month current data at Dang-Jin P.P harbor. Predicted data visualized with graphs, vectors and stick plot. The purpose of VTSS give to information to maritime pilot for help to make decision schedule.
It is well-known fact that tidal difference between the ebb and flow in Yellow Sea is about 9 m so that it has largest value in the world. This wide range of tide level enables Yellow Sea water to intrude into main stream of Han River. However, the study of the tidal reach of Han River has not been carried out thoroughly since North and South Koreas share this region so that topography data and physical measurement are lacking. In this study, to examine the reverse flow and dispersion behavior by tidal effect at the tidal reach of Han River, 2-D river analysis models were applied. RMA-2 was applied to calculate the horizontal velocities and water surface elevation. With the results of velocities and water depth, RAM4, which is 2-D advection-dispersion model based on FEM was simulated to analyze the horizontal transport behavior of BOD.
The Han River is the only waterway in Korea where estuary is not blocked by dykes so that tidal water is flowing in and out through the tidal reach. The extreme tidal range in the Yellow Sea causes an intense flood current, stretching over horizontal extents of tens of kilometers into the rivers. To elucidate the flow reversal by discharge conditions and transient tidal level in the Han river, numerical simulations were conducted under 7 boundary conditions for two days with 10 minute time step. As the flow conditions changed from low discharge and high tidal difference to high discharge and low tidal difference, the flow reversals became weaker and the velocity of forward flow direction became higher due to the increased flow momentums and decreased tidal differences. In the case of normal flow, the maximum reverse velocity was 0.4 m/s, which was equivalent to the maximum forward velocity. In addition, the pattern of the development and decay of forward and reverse flow was presented.
Tidal ranges of inner Saemangeum were largely reduced after the final dyke enclosure, resulting in the former tidal flats becoming either permanently exposed, still influenced by changing tide, or permanently submerged. The effect of reduced tidal range on survival and population stability of tidal flat macrofauna were investigated at three shifted habitats after the dyke completion. At the exposed area, several species survived for 80 days after the dyke enclosure. However, within 120 days, all macrofauna died off due to the elevated temperature during summer. At the intertidal area, some species were maintained until 170 days after the dyke enclosure with a large decrease of the faunal abundance. Species of the submerged area were seen to be more tolerant of the changed environments. The opportunistic species, such as Sinocorophium sinensis, Theora fragilis and Pseudopolydora Kempi, were massively introduced into the submerged area after the dyke enclosure, in which the benthic ecosystem was severely disturbed.
As one of the fundamental survey to evaluate purification capacity of pollutants at the tidal flat sediments, we studied vertical environmental characteristics in three tidal flat sediments, Chunjangdae, Eueunri and Gyewhado. These are dissmilar to external feature in each other. The results of this study may be summarized as followed; As the results of particle analysis, Eueunri tidal flat fediment located in Keum river estuary consists of 98.98% as silt & clay, Chunjangdae tidal flat sediment located in SeocheonGun consists of 97.99% as sand. And Gyewhado tidal flat sediment located in Saemankeum in Saemankeum area consists area consists of 32.81% as silt & clay and 67.19% as sand. The concentration of organic pollutants(I.L., COD, POC, PON) in Eueunri tidal flat sediment which highly content of silt & clay were 3~4 times higher than others. The concentration of organic pollutants at each layer were slightly increase goes with deepen layer. The linear correlation between I.L. and COD, POC, PON were obtained. Correlation coefficients were in range of 0.821~0.940. Also the correlation between pH and COD, POC, PON were high(>r=0.9). Filteration rate in Chunjangdae tidal flat sediment was 0.01584cm/s as mean value, but the other were almost nothing filtered off.
The prediction of changes in the tidal regime due to the construction of a barrier in the Keum River was performed via one-dimensional numerical model. It is shown that a barrier in Mangwolri will lead to a small increase in the $ tidal range. The validity of this prediction is examined using the hydrodynamic analogy with AC circuit theory. Some of preliminary results are presented and discussed.
The long-term monthly variations of tide with tidal harmonic analysis in Pusan Harbour are investigated. The present spring tidal range decreased 1.4 cm and the variation of phase lag increased than 1974. The high and low water level of yearly mean sea level is show during the February to March and August to September, respectively. It is important to note that the larger lunar elliptic N2 is large in comparison with lunisolar diurnal K1 and principal lunar diurnal O1. The ratios (Correction Factors) of monthly mean sea level and the main 4 tidal constituents are evaluated to correct the shortly (monthly) observed tide for the design of harbour facilities.
This study was conducted to evaluate characteristics of particle composition and organic matter distribution for tidal flat sediments in the Saemankeum area. The tidal flat sediments consist of predominantly sand and a little of silt, whereas the content of clay was very low. The analyzed values of particles of tidal flat sediments were in the range of $4.60\~10.90\;{\phi}$ for mean size and $-0.1\~1.75\;{\phi}$ for sorting and $-1.0\~0.92\;{\phi}$ for skewness and $0.27\~6.75\;{\phi}$ for kurtosis. The tidal flat sediments are interpreted as representing significant effect of the environmental change due to the construction of Saemankeum embankment. The ORP was in the range of -133$\~$200 (mean 73) mV. But 24 stations of the total stations showed reduction condition, The concentration of CODs was in the range of 17.54$\~$6,176.3 mg/kg. The ratio of C/S was 0.02$\~$0.45 (mean 0.24). And the Saemankeum tidal flat sediment was a little effected by input organic pollutants from upper site area. Conclusively, conservation of the Saemankeum tidal flat sediment was requested because it is for the growing fishery and low organic matter.
