Along with the growing interest in renewable energy development, Korea's west coast is one of the favorable regions for tidal power. Tidal power using tidal barrages that work like hydroelectric dams is a representative method of tidal power through long-term operation, but the promotion of tidal power projects is being delayed or stopped due to impacts on ecological changes, reproduction, water column processes and hydrology. In order to reduce the high construction cost and environmental cost problems caused by tidal power using tidal barrages, in this study, field experiments were conducted to develop and verify the performance of tidal power generation devices applicable to sea areas where dykes are already installed. As a result of conducting five cases of experiments using two water tanks, pipe lines, open channels, and water turbine and generator, the possibility of developing a power generation system capable of generating more than 10 kW output and more than 60% efficiency were confirmed. The results of this study can be used for small-scale tidal power by utilizing the existing dykes of the west coast.

We have developed electrical power train for 1MW tidal current plant which is composed of both 500kW tidal current plant with doubly-fed induction generator and 500kW tidal current plant with synchronous generator. To check performances of the protype, 2MW dynamometer is used to simulate a helical turbine, and then protype generator and converter are coupled with the dynamometer separately. From the suggested experimental results it is reconfirmed that two kinds of the power train to be installed at the Uldolmok located at southwestern shore in Korea are able to operate under all kinds of the condition about speed and power.

Recently, focus has been placed on ocean energy resources because environmental concerns regarding the exploitation of hydrocarbons are increasing. Tidal current power, one of the ocean energy resources, has great potential worldwide due to its high energy density. The flow velocity is the most crucial factor for the power estimation of TCP(Tidal Current Power) system since the kinetic energy of the flow is proportional to the cube of the flow speed. So sufficient inflow speed to generate electricity from the tidal current power is necessary. A duct system can accelerate the flow velocity, which could expand the applicable area of TCP systems to relatively lower velocity sites. The shapes of the inlet and outlet could affect the flow rate inside the duct. To investigate the performance of the duct, various ducts were preliminary designed considering the entire system that is single-point moored TCP system and a series of simulations were carried out using ANSYS-CFX v13.0 CFD software. This study introduces a ducted turbine system that can be moored to a seabed. A performance estimation and comparison of results with conventional tidal converters were summarized in this paper.

Nowadays renewable energy has undergone major development, however most renewable energy resources still have demerit which is under the influence of environmental factors that can not be set up the power plants or can not be generated the rated power. To wander from the point of environmental instability, the present paper looks at the tidal current energy which can supply regular electric power. It has an important merit which is more predictable than others, however the place which can be set up is limited and the turbine system must be optimized. The development of the optimized rotor blades design is urgent to obtain regular electric power using the tidal current energy. Therefore, the paper expands on this idea and presents a conceptual design of 100kW horizontal axis rotor blade for the tidal current turbine using blade element momentum (BEM) analysis. The compatibility of horizontal axis tidal turbine (HATT) is verified using a commercial computational fluid dynamics (CFD) code, ANSYS-CFX. This paper presents results of the numerical analysis, such as pressure, streak line and the performance curves with torque data for the inflow of the horizontal axis tidal current turbine (HATT).

The west and south coastal regions of Korea are known to be of strong tidal current speed. With the increasing demand for renewable energies, the resource assessment has been a crucial issue which should be conducted before any detail planning and development of the potential sites for tidal current farm. Although there are several results of resource assessment of tidal current energy in Korea, the resource assessment method is not officially announced. This undefined methodology makes the results unreliable and useless. Recently new renewable energy potential definition has been announced by KIER (Korea Institute of Energy Research). This categorizes energy potential as four steps; theoretical, geographical, technical and market potentials. This paper describes the resource assessment of tidal current power in Korea based on API (Averaged Power Intercepted). The results show that the Incheon-Gyeonggi and Jeollanam-do are very promising areas for tidal current power in Korea.

The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides result in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by using tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok between Chindo and Haenam. Extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes some observation results of field campaign, design of the supporting structure of a pilot plant of 1,000kW and a future tidal current power plant and so on.
The main structures that comprise a tidal power plant are turbine structure, sluice structure, tide embankment and gate. Since these structures are founded on seabed ground, an extensive geotechnical site investigation to evaluate the engineering properties of field soils must be conducted prior to design and construction. According to the results of geotechnical site investigation conducted at the planned site for construction of Incheon bay tidal power plant, soft ground generally lie 7 meters below the seabed surface level. This research suggests the reliable and economical design of foundations and ground improvements required for construction of main structures in Incheon bay tidal power plant, with considerations on field conditions.

In order to analyze the characteristics of tidal current power generation system, we measured the output power according to the stream velocity by a water tunnel system and a simulation in MATLAB/Simulink. The water tunnel system consisted of impeller tidal flow transducer and PMSG with rotor in the water. The simulation consisted of PMSG, the tidal current turbine, and back-to-back converter. Also, we simulated the characteristics of output power according to the change of blade length and angular velocity.

Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become the international issue. Not like other renewable energy sources, TCP is the high reliable and predictable and continuous energy source as the current pattern and speed can be predicted throughout the year. Having very strong tidal current speeds, there are many suitable site for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power) on the west and south coastal region in Korea. The maximum current speed in the south is recorded up to 6.5m/s. Due to the high tidal current speed on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with number of devices is required in the ocean. However, it is important to estimate the potential quantity of energy in the area. Also the realistic quantity that can be extracted is to be investigated. Based on the estimated energy production considering the number of devices and the interactional effects, system type, the water depth and etc., the cost of the development and the benefit from SMP can be estimated. The feasibility study for the 200MW tidal in Incheon, Korea has been performed recently. Based on the actual feasibility study, the procedure and the key points for the application of tidal current power farm are introduced in the paper.

This paper presents an optimal operating scheme by integrating Sihwa tidal power into NamSihwa systems. For optimal operation of NamSihwa systems, the sea levels of 1 minute interval using cubic interpolation based on the forecasted levels of high and low water are calculated. Especially, it is compared by three schemes to purchase total power from transmission system to purchase total power from tidal power system in time period that can generate tidal power and to purchase total power by comparing purchase costs from transmission system and tidal power system. The scheme may contribute to energy save in Korea that natural resources are lacking.
