Previous studies on the numerical simulation at the tidal reach of Han River tend to restrict downstream boundary as Jeon-ryu station due to difficulties in gaining cross section data and tidal elevation values at Yu-do. But, in this study, geometries beyond the confluence of Gok-reung stream and Im-jin River are constructed based on the numerical sea map; tidal elevation at the downstream boundary, Yu-do is estimated by harmonic analysis of In-cheon tide gage station so that hydrodynamic and diffusion behavior have been analyzed. The domain ranging from Shin-gok submerged weir to Yu-do is selected (which is 36.8 km in length). RMA-2 and RAM4 developed by Il Won Seo (2008) are applied to simulate flow and diffusion behavior, respectively. Numerical results of flow characteristic are compared with the measured data at Jeon-ryu station. Simulation is carried out from June 23 to 25 in 2006 on the ground that hydrologic data is satisfactory and tidal difference is huge during that period. The result shows that reverse flow occurs 5 times according to the tidal elevation at Yu-do and the maximum reverse flow is observed up to Jang-hang IC, which is 32.9 km in length. Also analysis is focused on the process of generation and disappearance of reverse flow, the distribution of water surface elevation and velocity along the maximum velocity line, and the transport of nonconservative pollutant. Pollutant injected from Gul-po stream spreads widely across the river; however, the size of BOD cloud entering from Gok-reung stream is relatively small because water depth at the mid and left side becomes deeper and maximum velocity occurs along the right bank so that transverse mixing is completed quickly. Finally, mixing characteristic of horizontal salinity distribution is obtained by estimating the salinity input with analytical solution of 1D advection-dispersion equation.
Recently, research using remote sensing has been active in various fields such as environment, science, and society. The results of research using remote sensing are not only numerical results, but also play an important role in solving and preventing social and scientific problems. The purpose of this thesis is to tell the correlation between the data provided and each data by using remote sensing technology for the tidal flat environment. The purpose of this study is to obtain high-resolution data using artificial satellites during remote sensing to find out information on tidal flat currents. Tidal flats created by erosion, sedimentation, low tide, and high tide contain information about the tidal flat slope and information about the ecosystem. Therefore, it can be considered as one of the very important studies to analyze the overall tidal flow channel. This paper creates a DEM (Digital Elevation Model) through TanDEM-X, and DEM is used as the most basic data to create a tidal channel. The research area is a tidal flat located in the middle of the west coast of Ganghwado tidal flat. By analyzing the tidal channel created, various information such as the slope direction of Ganghwado tidal flat and the shape of the tidal channel can be grasped. It is expected that the results of this study will increase the importance and necessity of using DEM data for tidal flat research in the future, and that high-quality results can be obtained.
Digital Elevation Model (DEM) of intertidal flat can be widely used not only for scientific fields, coastal management, fisheries, ocean safety, military, but also for understanding natural and artificial topographic changes of the tidal flat. In this study, we generated DEM of the Ganghwado southern intertidal flat, the largest tidal flat in the west coast of the Korean Peninsula, using waterline method and interferometric synthetic aperture radar (InSAR). Constructed DEM which applied waterline method to the Landsat-5 TM and Landsat-7 ETM+ images closely expresses overall topographic relief of tidal flat. We found that the accuracy was determined by the number of waterlines which reflect various tidal conditions. The application of InSAR to the ERS-1/2 and ENVISAT images showed that only ERS-1/2 tandem pairs successfully generated DEM in the part of northern Yeongjongdo, but construction of DEM in the other areas was difficult due to the low coherence caused by a lot of surface remnant waters. In the near future, Kompsat-2 will provide satellite images having multi-spectral and high spatial resolution within a relatively short period at different sea levels. Application of waterline method to these images will help us construct a high precision tidal flat DEM. Also, we should develop DEM generation method using single-pass microwave satellite images.

An ecological study was performed to investigate the community structure of the benthic macrofaunal assemblage on the Cheokjeon tidal flat, Incheon, Korea. Benthic samples were collected between Sept. 1990 and July1992 at three stations to compare environmental factors with the structure of benthic community among station sand seasons. Overall, macrofauna comprised a total of 111 species, and the mean density (708.1 md./$m^2$) and biomass (214.9gWWt/$m^2$). The number of species and individuals of polychaetes, molluscs and crustaceans made up more than 80% of the total number. On the other hand, in terms of biomass, bivalves and holothuroideans indicated that they were the dominant faunal groups. Hierarchical classification using the Bray-Curtis coefficient categorized samples into 3 station and 4 faunal groups. In terms of q-mode, there consisted of upper, middle and low tidal flat stations, respectively. And four faunistic groups were established as follows: 1) Heteromastus filifomis-Mactra veneriformis-Solen strictus-Ilyoplax finggi (wide-ranging elevation specialists), 2)Nephtys chemulpoensis-Macrophthalmus gaponicus (high elevation specialists), 3) Glycera subaenea-Decorifer matusimana-Tritodynamia (middle elevation specialists) and 4) Nephtys polybranchia-Borniopsis tsurumaru-Asthenognathus inaequipes-Protankyra bidentata (low elevation Specialists).
A tide-simulating apparatus was developed for culturing marine macroalgae. The objective of this study was to introduce a novel tide-simulating apparatus that can simulate a diurnal or semi-diurnal tidal cycle in the laboratory. In this apparatus, the seaweeds are move up and down and the water level remains the same during the simulated tidal cycle. The apparatus consists of 18 cylindrical culture tanks (3 blocks $\times$ 6 culture tanks) with 12 cm diameter and 24.5 cm long containing up to 2.5 L of seawater. There is a horizontal plate which covered all 18 culture tanks, and it is raised and lowered by a programmable motor that can regulate exposure time. In one application, seaweeds are attached to braided twine hung on Plexiglas air-tubing. The air-tubing is attached to a lid that is set on a horizontal plate. This apparatus is made of colorless Plexiglas to maximize light transmittance. This apparatus is easily disassembled and transportable to any indoor laboratory, wet laboratory, greenhouse, etc. This apparatus also offers considerable flexibility in terms of design. The size of culture tank can be redesigned by either increasing the height of cylinder or/and using a different diameter of cylindrical Plexiglas, therefore, larger/taller thalli can be cultivated. Growth rates of three eulittoral Porphyra species from different tidal elevations have been compared using this device.

On 31 March 2007, the abnormal wave occurred along western coast of Korean including Yeonggwang. In this paper, this event is studied using available field measurement data for the event analysis and numerical model for reproducing the unknown waves. We found several 1-min interval tidal elevation and mean sea level pressure (MSLP) data along the western coast of Korea and analyzed it using wavelet technique. We computed the arrival time and the propagation direction of abnormal wave using wavelet results and performed the numerical simulation using 2 dimensional shallow water wave model. The sea level under the forcing of air pressure jump was obviously amplified by the Proudman resonant effect. The computed sea levels compared with observations are underestimated, but the order of arrival time at the tidal station showed good agreement.

The importance of resonable treatment of tide characteristics has been shown by Kweon, et al. (2005, 2006) for the crest elevation estimation because of a big difference of tidal elevation along Korean coast. For the procedure of crest elevation design, the expected overtopping probability (EOP) was estimated by Kweon, et al. (2006). The comparisons on each sea showed that EOP was lower east, south and west sea in order. The results involved the assumption that the tide and design level wave height meet any time in a year. However, big waves mainly occur in summer or winter in Korean coast, the study focuses on the encounter probability of big waves and seasonal tide level. A theory of the encounter probability is not derived by the present study but it shows reasonable acceptability of the proposed scenario in which the expected overtopping probability could be an index for the crest elevation estimation in Korean coast. The calculation based on the scenario gives the possibility range for the crest elevation estimation which has no tendency of each sea along Korean peninsular. The range is within the expected overtopping probability of 1% in the whole coast of Korea.

Spatio-temporal distribution patterns of the major dominant species were assessed from bimonthly monitoring of macrotidal flat in Cheokjeon, Incheon, Korea between September 1990 and July 1992. Overall, macrofauna comprised a total of 111 species, 25,491 inds.136 ㎡. The result of Le Bris index, dominance ranking of the lead-ing species showed that the top 15 species accounting for 74.8% (19,072 inds.) of total density. In Cheokjeon tidal flat, some species were especially habitat-restricted such as genus Nephtys (Annelids; Polychaetes) and Mac-rophthalmus (Crustaceans; Decapods). Based on the density data, the five dominant species were the polychaetes Het-eromastus filiformis, the bivalves Mactra veneriformis and Solen strictus, the brachyurans Macrophthalmus japonicus, the holothuriodeans Protankyra bidentata. The results of one-way ANOVA, mean value of H. filiformis and M. ven-eriformis did not show significant changes with tidal elevation and sediment composition (p>0.05). But, other species (S. strictus, M. japonicus and P. bidentata) showed significant variations (p<0.001). In conclusion, these indicate significant spatial fluctuation with tidal elevation and sediment characteristics in some species.
Seawater circulations between a bay and the open sea play an important role to make the ecosystem healthy, providing nutrient and oxygen to the benthic environments and cleaning up pollutions. The health of the benthic environment in a bay is closely related to the flushing characteristics of seawater. In this study, to estimate the seawater distribution and circulation characteristics of benthic environment in the Geunso bay, we calculated the hydraulic turn-over time by a hydro-hypsographic analysis. Digital elevation model (DEM) which was generated using waterline method based upon remotely sensed data and water depth of the subtidal zone estimated by echo-sounding survey was applied to the hydro-hypsograhic analysis through a geographic information system (GIS) spatial analysis. The results showed that 95% of the total area of the bay was tidal flat and the hydraulic turn-over time was 1.03 tidal cycle, which indicated that the flushing characteristics of the Geunso bay was very good. Geunso bay was revealed to occupy relatively wide area of benthic environment and to have relatively big tidal range over other domestic and foreign coastal environment, therefore it could have a better seawater circulation characteristics. This result can be effectively applied as fundamental information to establish the system for a quantitative estimate of health of coastal environment in the west coast of Korea and manage the ecosystem in benthic environments.

Seasonal changes of topography, sediment grain size and accumulation rate in the Gomso-Bay tidal flat, west coast of Korea, have been studied in order to understand the seasonal accumulation pattern and preservation potential of the tidal-flat sediments. Seasonal levelings across the tidal flat show that the landward movement of both intertidal sand shoals and cheniers accelerates during the winter and typhoon periods, but it almost stops in summer when mud deposition is instead predominant at the middle and upper tidal flats. Seasonal variations of mean grain size were largest on the upper part of middle tidal flat where summer mud layers were eroded during the winter and typhoon periods. Measurements of accumulation depths from sea floor to basal plate reveal that accumulation rates were seasonally controlled according to the elevation of tidal-flat surface. The upper tidal flat where the accumulation rate of summer was generally higher than that of winter was characterized by a continuous deposition throughout the entire year, whereas in the middle tidal flat, sediment accumulations were concentrated in winter relative to summer and were intermittently eroded by typhoons. The lower tidal flat were deposited mostly in winter and eroded during summer typhoons. Can cores taken across the tidal flat reveal that sand-mud interlayers resulting from such seasonal changes of energy regime are preserved only in the upper part of the deposits and generally replaced by storm layers downcore. Based on above results, it is suggested that the storm deposits by winter storms and typhoons would consist of the major part of the Gomso-Bay sediments.
