CFD (computational fluid dynamics) analyses that considered the dynamic interaction effects between the flow and a turbine were performed to evaluate the power output characteristics of two representative vertical-axis tidal-current turbines: an H-type Darrieus turbine and Gorlov helical turbine (GHT). For this purpose, a commercial CFD code, Star-CCM+, was utilized, and the power output characteristic were investigated in relation to the scale ratio using the relation between the Reynolds number and the lift-to-drag ratio. It was found that the power coefficients were significantly reduced when the scaled model turbine was used, especially when the Reynolds number was lower than $10^5$. The power output characteristics of GHT in relation to the twisting angle were also investigated using a three-dimensional CFD analysis, and it was found that the power coefficient was maximized for the case of a Darrieus turbine, i.e., a twisting angle of $0^{\circ}$, and the torque pulsation ratio was minimized when the blade covered $360^{\circ}$ for the case of a turbine with a twisting angle of $120^{\circ}$.
This study was conducted to examine the effect of wind on the circulation of seawater in Gamak Bay, which contains numerous farms for fish and shellfish but suffers a significant loss by fisheries nearly annually from harmful algal blooms. In numerical experiments with a simplified bathymetry for Gamak Bay, the wind in summer appeared to more strongly influence the east-westward flow than the south-northward flow. In winter, this trend was nearly similar to the summer but seemed to have a greater effect on the flow at the north-west of the bay than the flow at the south mouth of the bay. On the other hand, in numerical experiments with a realistic bathymetry for Gamak Bay, the wind in summer appeared to more strongly influence the east-westward flow than the south-northward flow. Furthermore, the effect of the wind was stronger at the south mouth of the bay than at the north-west of the bay. In contrast, the wind in winter affected the east-westward flow more strongly and its effect appeared stronger at the north-west of the bay than at the south mouth of the bay. In addition, the effect of the wind tended to increase with distance from the east to the west. Therefore, the tidal currents in Gamak Bay proved to be strongly influenced by the wind, in particular east-westward. However, some measures are urgently required to improve the water quality of the bay, since the south-northward flow turned out to be obstructed by an east-westward shoal located in the middle of the bay.
In this paper three turbulence models including two-equation model by Blumberg and Mellor (1987), one-equation model with mixing length formula of Blackadar's (1962), and zero-equation model of Prandtl's (1925) were compared in homogeneous, unstratified channel flows. Steady flows which a steep-sided trapezoidal trench with uniform discharge, tidal flow and steady wind-driven flow in finite channels are considered in detail. Steady flows in a trench and tidal flows in a finite channel were reproduced fairly accurately and there was virtually no difference among results of three turbulence models. However, In case of steady wind-driven flow only two-equation model reproduced the important features of experimental data. the other two models underestimated the surface velocity. In tidal and wind-driven flows with negligibly small adjective and diffusive effects, the two-equation model gives rise to parabolic profile of eddy viscosity with maximum at the mid0depth, and the one and zero equation model based on Blackadar formula linear profile with maximum at the surface.

To know the penetration behavior of spilled oil into sandy beach sediment is very important, because the penetration depth of the stranded oil into the sediments is one of the most significant information to know effect of spilled oil on biological communities and to set up cleaning method. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of wave and/or tidal action on penetration of spilled oil into the sediments and to clarify main factor in oil penetration using sandy beach model. Specific conclusions derived from this study are as follows. Spilled fuel oil C penetrated into the sediments only by falling tidal fluctuation and not by wave action on sandy beach environment, and the first tide is most important for the penetration of stranded oil. Over 80% of bulk fraction in penetrated fuel oil C was concentrated to the top 2 cm sediment-layer. Moreover, the penetration of stranded oil into the sandy beach sediments was strongly correlated with the oil viscosity affected by temperature.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an assistant device for the promotion of bag-valve-mask ventilation based on a non-equivalent control group pre-test and post-test design. Methods: The experimental tool was a mask assistance device developed by the researchers. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 with the cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) evaluation program from August 18 to 30, 2016. The research tools included general, hand-related, and ventilation-related characteristics. Results: Before and after using the mask assistance device, the tidal volume increased by 64 mL (p<.001) from 461.76 mL to 525.86 mL. The tidal volume for control was 477.86 mL, and there was a statistical difference (p<.05). The ventilation frequency in device users was 10 times per minute for a total of 20 ventilations with before 10.65 after 10 times, and that of the control group was before 10.36 times after 10 times; there was no difference in both groups(p>.05). The accuracy of the assistance device was $81.72{\pm}30.86%$, which was a very high value. However, the accuracy of ventilation in the control group with no assistance device was $18.97{\pm}32.44%$, which was a very low accuracy rate. Conclusion: This study's results suggested utilizing the newly-developed mask assistance device in CPR, and showed increases in tidal volume and accuracy of ventilation using the bag-valve-mask ventilation equipment. The general and hand-related characteristics did not have any effect, so the use of the device proved to increase the efficacy in all users.
Understanding the penetration behavior of the spilled oil is very important to remove itself and to minimize its impact on intertidal biological communities by earlier treatment of the oil. The purpose of this study is to clarify the effects of wave and tidal actions on the penetration of spilled oil and to evaluate main factors of oil penetration using a sandy-beach model. Infiltration processes into the sediments showed significant difference between seawater and crude oil. Seawater was infiltrated by both wave action and tidal fluctuation into the sediments in sandy beach. However, spilled crude oil penetrated into the sediments only by falling tides and not by wave action, and the first tide is most important for the penetration of stranded oil. Over 70% of bulk fraction in penetrated crude oil was concentrated to the top 2 cm sediment-layer when spilled oil volume was 1 L/$\textrm{m}^2$. Moreover, the penetration of stranded oil into the sandy beach sediments was strongly correlated with the oil viscosity affected by temperature.

This paper studies the effects of global climate change on Gyeonggi Bay and appropriate adaptation strategies. Located along the west coast of Korea, Gyeonggi Bay is renowned as one of the five most important global tidal flats (wetlands). Due to climate change in Gyeonggi Bay, the water temperature is predicted to increase by 1.44 ℃ by the year 2100, the salinity to decrease by 1.1 PSU, the sea level to rise by 35.2 cm, and approximately 150.5 km2 of the coast to be submerged due to the rising sea levels. Adaptation strategies to combat negative impacts of climate change on the ecological environment of Gyeonggi Bay include 1) supporting the self-adaptation capability of Gyeonggi Bay's natural environment to be sustainable, and 2) protecting lowlands adjacent to tidal flats and low-lying areas of the coast against human involvement to reserve more space for upslope shifts of biota with rising sea levels.
Background : Many inflammatory mediators and collagenases are involved in the pathogenesis of acute lung injury (ALI) and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). The increase of matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9, gelatinase-B) produced mainly by inflammatory cells was reported in many ALI models and connective tissue cells. In this study, the expression of MMP-9 in ventilator-induced lung injury (VILI) model and the effects of matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor (MMPI) on VILI were investigated. Methods : Eighteen Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into three groups: low tidal Volume (LVT, 7mL/Kg tidal volume, 3 $cmH_2O$ PEEP, 40/min), high tidal volume (HVT, 30mL/Kg tidal volume, no PEEP, 40/min) and high tidal volume with MMPI (HVT+MMPI) groups. Mechanical ventilation was performed in room air for 2 hours. The 20 mg/Kg of CMT-3 (chemically modified tetracycline-3, 6-demethyl 6-deoxy 4-dedimethylamino tetracycline) was gavaged as MMPI from three days before mechanical ventilation. The degree of lung injury was measured with wet-to-dry weight ratio and acute lung injury score. Expression of MMP-9 was studied by immunohistochemical stain with a mouse monoclonal anti-rat MMP-9 $IgG_1$. Results : In the LVT, HVT and HVT+MMPI groups, the wet-to-dry weight ratio was $4.70{\pm}0.14$, $6.82{\pm}1.28$ and $4.92{\pm}0.98$, respectively. In the HVT group, the ratio was significantly higher than other groups (p<0.05). Acute lung injury score measured by five-point scale was $3.25{\pm}1.17$, $12.83{\pm}1.17$ and $4.67{\pm}0.52$, respectively. The HVT group was significantly damaged by VILI and MMPI protects injuries by mechanical ventilation (p<0.05). Expression of MMP-9 measured by four-point scale was $3.33{\pm}2.07$, $12.17{\pm}2.79$ and $3.60{\pm}1.95$, respectively, which were significantly higher in the HVT group (p<0.05). Conclusion : VILI increases significantly the expression of MMP-9 and MMPI prevents lung injury induced by mechanical ventilation through the inhibition of MMP-9.
This paper deals with the theory for rotational motion of a two-layer Earth model (an inelastic mantle and liquid core) including the dissipation in the mantle-core boundary(CMB) along with tidal effects produced by Moon and Sun. An analytical solution being derived using Hori's perturbation technique at a second order Hamiltonian. Numerical nutation series will be deduced from the theory.

There were many studies on the dependence of clearance rate on temperature and the body size of bivalves (Winter, 1973; Bayne et al., 1976; Yukihira et al., 1998), Most of these studies dealt with relatively large species, especially commercially important species. Studies with smaller but ecologically important species were relative rare(Werner and Hollibaugh, 1993). (omitted)
