  • It is well-known that the resources for tide and tidal current energy are abundant in Korea. The south coast in Korea is recognized as one of the most appropriate places in the world for developing tidal current energy. The target site for harnessing tidal current energy is the Uldolmok, where the strongest tidal current in Korea occurs. In order to commercialize and industrialize the tidal current power generation, the construction of pilot tidal current power plant of 1MW has been started in April 2006, and is expected to be completed by May 2007. Extensive works including field investigation, field experiment for evaluating the efficiency of helical turbine and numerical analysis have been performed. This paper present the several design parameters for constructing the Uldolmok pilot tidal current power plant.

  • In this paper, characteristics of a tidal current power generation system are analysis using power hardware-in-the-loop simulation (PHILS). A 10 kW motor generator set is connected to the real grid through a fabricated 10 kW back to back converter. A power control scheme is applied to the back to back converter. A 2 MW class tidal current turbine is modeled in real time digital simulator (RTDS). Generating voltage and current from the 10 kW PMSG is applied to a 2 MW class tidal current turbine in the RTDS using PHILS. The PHILS results depict the rotation speed, power coefficient, pitch angle, tip-speed ratio, and output power of tidal current turbine. The PHILS results in this paper can contribute to the increasing reliability and stability of the tidal current turbines connected to the grid using PHILS.

  • The Korean peninsula has a number of coastal sites where the rhythmic rising and lowering of water surface due to tides results in strong tidal current. The kinetic energy of these currents can be efficiently exploited by use of tidal current turbines. The pilot tidal current power plant is to be constructed at the Uldolmok narrow channel between J info and Haenam, Our ins next Year, and extensive coastal engineer ing research works have been carried out. This paper describes and analyzes some observation results of field test about the efficiency of Helical turbine for tidal current power plant. The efficiency of turbine, which is diameter 2.2m and height 2.5m, is evaluated meximum RPM, torque, and current velocity. The tested turbines had the maximum efficiencies of the bounds of 25 to 35% in the current velocity range between 1.4 and 2.6 m/s. This result shows that the pilot tidal current power plant needs three helical turbines with diameter 3.0m and height 3.6m to produce electric power 500kW.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become more important nationally. Due to the high tidal range of up to 9.7m on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned and constructed. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with a multi-arrangement is necessary in the ocean. The rotor, which initially converts the energy, is a very important component because it affects the efficiency of the entire system, and its performance is determined by various design variables. The power generation is strongly dependent on the size of the rotor and the incoming flow velocity. However, the interactions between devices also contribute significantly to the total power capacity. Therefore, rotor performance considering the interaction problems needs to be investigated for generating maximum power in a specific field. This paper documents the characteristics of wake induced by horizontal axis tidal current power turbine.

  • There are several advantages to make use of a bridge pier for the tidal power generation. Current velocity increases near the pier, therefore the tidal power generation becomes more efficient because the power is proportional to the cubic of the current velocity. The pier is convenient for access and maintenance of the hydraulic turbine and the power unit. The project is now underway at the Ikitsuki Bridge in Tatsuno-Seto Strait of Nasasaki Prefecture, where the tidal current was measured by the bottom mount ADCP for almost one year. Model experiments for a Darrieus water turbine with two and three straight blades were carried out in the circulating water channel, in which the power coefficients of the turbine were obtained as a function of blade section and the attaching angle of a blade to the rotor. Those experimental results are discussed to obtain an optimum Darrieus turbine for tidal power generation.

  • Recently, tidal current energy conversion is a promising way to harness the power of tides in order to meet the growing demands of energy utilization. A new concept of tidal current energy conversion device, named Vane Tidal Turbine (VTT), is introduced in this study. VTT has several special features that are potentially more advantageous than the conventional tidal turbines, such as propeller type tidal turbines. The purpose of this study on VTT is to analyze the possibility of extracting the hydrokinetic energy of tidal current and converting it into electricity, and evaluate the performance of turbines for various numbers of blades (six, eight and twelve) using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD). At various tip-speed ratios (TSR), the six-bladed turbine obtains the highest power and torque coefficients, power efficiency is up to 28% at TSR = 1.89. Otherwise, the twelve blade design captures the smallest portion of available tidal current energy at all TSRs. However, by adding more blades, torque extracted from the rotor shaft of twelve-bladed turbine is more uniform due to the less interrupted generation of force for a period of time (one revolution).

  • Recently, as a result of increasing concern about eco-friendly power, the demand for the power stations using environmentally friendly powers such as photovoltaic energy, wind force, tidal power, and tidal current has been increasing worldwide. Among these power stations tidal current power plant requires strong current generated by the topographic characteristics of the ocean floor. Uldolmok waterway producing very strong current is an ideal location for a tidal current power generation. However the occurrence of anthropogenic underwater noise generated by the tidal current power station may affect the marine environment. Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the noise radiated from the station and predict the range influenced by the radiated noise. In this paper, the measurements of radiated noise spectrum level by the tidal current power station are presented, and the source level per unit area is estimated. Finally, the propagation properties of the radiated noise in the Uldolmok waterway is evaluated from the model simulation using the parabolic equation method, RAM.

  • Tidal current power generation is a power generation method that produces energy using tidal currents generated by tidal phenomena. Tidal current power generation is a sustainable and regular energy production because tidal phenomenon occurs as long as the earth exists. Many countries are focusing on the development of tidal energy, but there are still concerns about the impact of tidal energy on the marine animals. In the present study, we reviewed on the various impacts of tidal power generation on marine animals and the future assignments.

  • Due to global warming, the need to secure an alternative resource has become the international issue. Not like other renewable energy sources, TCP is the high reliable and predictable and continuous energy source as the current pattern and speed can be predicted throughout the year. Having very strong tidal current speeds, there are many suitable site for the application of TCP (Tidal Current Power) on the west and south coastal region in Korea. The maximum current speed in the south is recorded up to 6.5m/s. Due to the high tidal current speed on the west coast of Korea, numerous tidal current projects are being planned. To extract a significant quantity of power, a tidal current farm with number of devices is required in the ocean. However, it is important to estimate the potential quantity of energy in the area. Also the realistic quantity that can be extracted is to be investigated. Based on the estimated energy production considering the number of devices and the interactional effects, system type, the water depth and etc., the cost of the development and the benefit from SMP can be estimated. The feasibility study for the 200MW tidal in Incheon, Korea has been performed recently. Based on the actual feasibility study, the procedure and the key points for the application of tidal current power farm are introduced in the paper.
