  • Particulate reinforced titanium composites were produced by PM rout. Differents volumetric percentages of TiN reinforcements were used, 5,10,15 vol%. Samples were uniaxial pressed and vacuum sintered at differents temperatures between $1200-1300^{\circ}C$. Density, porosity, shrinkage, mechanical properties and microstructure were studied. Elastic properties and strength resistance were analysed by flexural strength and tension tests, and after the test, fractured samples were analysed too, obtaining a correlation between the fracture, interparticulated or intraparticulated, and the reinforcement addition.. Hardness and microhardness test were applied too, in order to complete the study about mechanical properties. In order to study wear resistance pin-on-disc test were used. In addition, the temperature influence, the reactivity between matrix and reinforcement, and the microstructures developed were observed by optical and electron microscopy.

  • The fabrication of interconnect from titanium powders and $TiN_x$ powders is investigated. Corrosion-resistant titanium and $TiN_x$ are used as reinforcement in order to reveal high heat and corrosion resistance at the elevated temperature. We fabricated the plates for interconnect reinforced with $TiN_x$ by mixing titanium powders with 10 wt.% of nano-sized $TiN_x$. Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) was chosen for the sintering of these composites. The plate made of titanium powders and $TiN_x$ powders demonstrates higher corrosion resistance than that of the plate of titanium powders alone. The physical properties of specimens were analyzed by performing hardness test and biaxial strength test. The electrochemical properties, such as corrosion resistance and hydrogen permeability at high temperature, were also investigated. The microstructures of the specimens were investigated by FESEM and profiles of chemical compositions were analyzed by EDX.

  • In this study, the effect of the reinforcement on the wear behaviour and mechanical properties of hypereutectic Al-Si alloys was investigated. The Gas atomized hypereutectic Al-20Si alloy powders were mixed with 1, 3, and 5 wt.% AlN and TiC ceramic particles and consolidated by hotpress. The Al-20Si powder has both finely dispersed primary Si phases and eutectic structures. The Al-20Si-AlN, TiC composites showed that the reinforcements were distributed along the boundary of the Al-20Si alloy. The UTS increased with increasing the AlN, TiC contents. At a lower load, with an increasing weight fraction of reinforcements, the wear rate decreased in both composites and the wear mechanism was adhesive wear. At a higher load, the shape of the debris changes the mechanism of the AlN composites to abrasive-adhesion wear and this resulted in an increase of the wear rate.

  • TiC ceramic particulate-reinforced titanium matrix composites were fabricated and the resultant densification, microstructure, and static and dynamic mechanical properties were studied. Comparing Ti with TiH₂powders as host materials for TiC ceramic reinforcement by pressureless vacuum sintering, TiH₂-started composites showed better sinterability and resistance to both elastic and plastic deformation than Ti-started ones. When TiH₂and TiH₂-45 vol.%TiC samples were hot pressed, TiH₂matrices transformed to alpha prime Ti and alpha Ti phase, respectively. It is interpreted that the diffusion of an alpha stabilizer carbon from TiC into the matrix is one of the plausible reasons far such a microstructural difference. The 0.2% offset yield strengths of the hot pressed TiH₂and TiH₂-45 vol.%TiC samples were 1008 and 1446 MPa, respectively, in a static compressive mode (strain rate of 1×$10^{-3}$/s). Dynamic compressive strengths of the samples were 1600 and 2060 MPa, respectively, at a strain rate of 4×10³/s.

  • We synthesized potassium titanates having splinter and plate shape and evaluated frictional and wear properties of brake pad using them as reinforcements in friction materials. For splinter-shaped potassium titanates, potassium tetratitanate (K2O·4TiO2, PT4) with plate shape was prepared, then K ion of the titanate was leached by acid to make potassium hexatitanate (K2O·6TiO2, PT6), which was transformed to splinter-shaped PT6 by thermal treatment at 800℃. Plate-shaped potassium magnesium titanate (K0.8Mg0.4Ti1.6O4, PMT) was prepared by adding Mg in the potassium titanate using KCl as a flux. Using PT6 and PMT as reinforcements in friction materials of brake pad, we evaluated frictional and wear properties using 1/5-scale dynamometer. According to dynamometer test results, both reinforcements shows similar friction coefficient and fade & recovery behavior to conventional material and plate-shaped PMT exhibits higher wear resistance than splinter-shaped PT6.
