  • In the present study, the friction and wear properties of boundary lubricated textured surfaces were investigated. The capability of textured surfaces to feed lubricant into the interface of a sliding contact and to isolate wear partices was studied and related to the properties of the textured surfaces. Well-defined surface textures were produced by lithography and anisotropic etching of silicon wafers. Different widths and distributions of parallel groves were manufactured and subsequently the wafers were PVD coated with thin wear resistant TiN or DLC coatings, retaining the substrate texture. The surfaces were evaluated in reciprocating sliding against a ball bearing steel ball under starved or boundary lubricated conditions.

  • In this study, CrN, TiN and TiN + CrN coatings have treated onto the steel substrates by ion plating to improve their tribological behaviors. Some of the specimens were ion nitriding treated to study the effect of ion nitriding on wear behavior. The wear tests were performed with these specimens by ball-onplate type and disc-on-plate type wear tester. It was demonstrated that ion nitriding treatment improve wear resistance of the coatings. The results of high temperature wear tests indicated that the specimens coated with CrN were exhibited the better wear resistance properties than the specimens with TiN coatings

  • This research conducted milling tests to study effects of cutting environment conditions of ball end mills on the characteristics of hard milling process. KP4 steels and STD11 heat treated steels were used as the workpiece and WC-Co ball end mill tools with TiAlN coated were utilized in the cutting tests. Dry cutting without coolant and semi-dry cutting using botanical oil coolant were conducted and MQL(Minimum Quantity Lubricant) device was used to spray coolant. Cutting forces, tool wear and surface roughness were measured in the cutting tests. Results showed that dry cutting of KP4 and hardened STD11 specimens produced better surface quality and wear performance than MQL spray cutting did.

  • In this study, Material life cycle evaluation was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of TiN-ZrCo membrane manufacturting process. Gabi was used as software. The Eco-Indicator 99 methodology was used to evaluate the 11 impact categories and the 10 impact categories using the CML 2001 methodology. Precursor TiN was synthesized by sol-gel method and zirconium was coated by ball mill method. The metallurgical, physical and thermodynamic characteristics of the membranes were analyzed by using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM), Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDS), X-ray Diffraction (XRD), Thermo Gravimetry/Differential Thermal Analysis (TG/DTA), Brunauer, Emmett, Teller (BET) and Gas Chromatograph System (GP). As a result of the characterization and normalization, the environmental impacts of each category of impacts were GWP 100 years with the highest environmental impact of 99.9%.

  • The present paper is a contribution in characterising end milling process of AISI 52100 ball bearing steel through statistical analyses of variance (ANOVA). The latter has been performed to identify the effect of the cutting parameters on the machined surface roughness and the cutting tool life. Wear measurements have been carried on multilayer coated carbide inserts and the respective surface roughness has been recorded. Taguchi's technique has been adapted to conduct the design experiments in terms of orthogonal arrays according to the cutting parameters (cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut), the type of coating (TiN, TiCN, TiAlN) and lubricating condition. Regression analyses have conducted to the development of simplified empirical models that can be effectively used to predict surface roughness and tool wear in the present milling process.

  • During contact between surfaces, there is wear and the generation of wear. The particles contained in the lubricating oil carry detailed and important monitoring information about the condition of the machine. Therefore, this paper was undertaken for the Ferrography system of wear debris generated from a lubricated moving machine surface. The lubricating wear test was performed under different experimental conditions using the Falex wear test of the Pin and V-Block types by Ti(C,N) coated. It was shown from the test results that wear particle concentration(WPC), wear severity index(Is) and size distribution have come out all higher with increases in sliding friction time. With the Ferrogram thin leaf wear debris as well as ball and plate type wear particles were observed.

  • Fracture of brittle material due to dynamic load such a particle impact has been reported by many researchers as the fracture behavior by variation of stress for a short minute. Especially, the brittle material, such a ceramic, applied to the structural component of machine, is considered as the important project. In order to evaluate the improvement of impact resistance, the particle impact test for the $Al_2O_3-TiO_2$ coated glass is practiced. And then, the damage variation according to the impact energy of steel ball was evaluated. There was a large improvement by the ceramic coating on the surface of a glass substrate. The damage volume was especially imported to evaluate damage behavior in quantity. These data were plotted on logarithmic coordinate and experimental equations were induced by data analysis based on test results. And the variation of critical energy for crack initiation was analyzed with critical impact energy when each crack occurs.

  • In this study, Material life cycle evaluation was performed to analyze the environmental impact characteristics of TiN-Zr membrane manufacturing process. The software of MLCA was Gabi. Through this, environmental impact assessment was performed for each process. Transition metal nitrides have been researched extensively because of their properties. Among these, TiN has the most attention. TiN is a ceramic materials which possess the good combination of physical and chemical properties, such as high melting point, high hardness, and relatively low specific gravity, high wear resistance and high corrosion resistance. With these properties, TiN plays an important role in functional materials for application in separation hydrogen from fossil fuel. As a result of characterization and normalization, environmental impacts were 94% in MAETP (Marine Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% FAETP (Freshwater Aquatic Ecotoxicity), 2% HTP (Human Toxicity Potential). TiN fabrication process appears to have a direct or indirect impact on the human body. It is believed that the greatest impact that HTP can have on human is the carcinogenic properties. This shows that electricity use has a great influence on ecosystem impact. TiN-Zr was analyzed in Eco-Indicator '99 (EI99) and CML 2001 methodology.

  • The STD11 and KP4 are important steels and applied to the manufacturing of the die and mold. The purpose of this study is to investigate the machinability of tool steels of STD11(HRC60) and KP4(HRC32) when machining them by using ball end milling tools coated with TiAlN. Cutting forces by using a Kistler piezo-cell type tool dynamometer, surface roughness and tool wear by using tool microscope are used in the tests. The results from the cutting tests of KP4 specimens show that 85m/min. of cutting speed and 0.32mm/rev. of feed per revolution are optimum conditions for the higher productivity and 0.26mm/rev. with the same cutting speed are optimum conditions for better surface finishing. The results from machining STD11 workpiece at 30m/min. of cutting speed and 0.17m/rev. of feed per revolution show recommended for the higher productivity. The KP4 shows relatively smaller cutting forces than STD11 and STD11 shows the better surface finish than KP4.
