  • Effects of carbon and Ti on damping capacity are investigated in an Fe-17%Mn alloy. The suppressive force of carbon against ${\gamma}{\rightarrow}{\varepsilon}$ transformation increases linearly with an increase in its content, lowering Ms temperature and volume fraction of ${\varepsilon}$ martensite. Carbon deteriorates damping capacity by reducing the interfacial area of damping sources and mobility of the boundaries contributing to anelastic deformation. The reduction in damping capacity is accelerated when carbon-containing alloy is aged at higher temperatures above room temperature. The effect of Ti on damping capacity is found to be benificial in carbon-containing alloy, which is attributed to the depletion of carbon solute due to the formation of TiC.

  • Plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition of $TiO_{2$\pm}{\delta}$ has been carried out using TEMAT [tetrakis(ethylmethylamido) titanium] and $H_2$. Increasing the power from 300 W to 500 W produced the high density plasma, leading to the formation of TiO$_2$films with an increased ratio of Ti to O and a negligible amount of C and N. Applying the bias of 30W to the substrate in creased the growth rate of the film with a slightly increased content of Ti in the film. In addition, $H_2O$ was from either the residual gas in the gase pressure or $H_2(/He)$ gas and actively participated in the formation of $TiO_2$ films. Consequently, Ti ions created in the plasma could be a main contributor to $TiO_2$ formation with a slight amount of $H_2O(~10^{-4}Toor)$ in the ambient, which provided the dissociation of TEMAT.

  • By using an oxynitride glass as a sintering additive, the effects of BN content on microstructure and mechanical properties of the hot-pressed and subsequently annealed SiC-BN composites were investigated. The microstructures developed were analyzed by image analysis. The morphology of SiC grains was strongly dependent on BN content in the starting composition. The aspect ratio of SiC decreases with increasing BN content and the average diameter of SiC shows a maximum at 5 wt% BN and decreases with increasing BN content in the starting powder. The fracture toughness increased with increasing BN content while the strength decreased with increasing BN content. The strength and fracture toughness of SiC or SiC-TiC composites were strongly dependent on the morphology of SiC grains, but the strength and fracture toughness of SiC-BN composites were strongly dependent on BN content rather than morphology of SiC grains. These results suggest that fracture toughness of SiC ceramics can be tailored by manipulating BN content in the starting composition. Typical fracture toughness and strength of SiC-10 wt% BN composites were 8 MPa$.$m$\^$1/2/ and 445 MPa, respectively.

  • Microstructure, mechanical properties, and oxidation resistance of TiAIN thin films deposited on quenched and tempered STD61 tool steel by arc ion plating were studied using XRD, XPS and micro-balance. The TiAIN film was grown with the (200) orientation. The grain size of TiAIN thin film decreased with increasing Al contents, while chemical binding energy increased with Al contents. When hard coating films were oxidized at $850^{\circ}C$ in air, oxidation resistance of both TiN and TiCN films became relatively lower since the surface of films formed non-protective film such as $TiO_2$. However, oxidation resistance of TiAIN film was excellent because its surface formed protective layer such as $_A12$$O_3$ and $_Al2$$Ti_{7}$$O_{15}$, which suppressed oxygen intrusion.

  • In the coarse grain HAZ adjacent to the fusion line, most of the TiN particles in conventional Ti added steel are dissolved and austenite grain growth is easily occurred during welding process. To avoid this difficulty, thermal stability of TiN particle is improved by increasing the nitrogen content in steel. In this study, the effect of hlgh nitrogen TiN particle on preventing austenite grain growth in HAZ was investigated. Increased thermal stability of TiN particle is helpful for preventing the austenite grain growth by pinning effect. High nitrogen TiN particle in simulated HAZ were not dissolved even at high temperature such as 1400'E and prevented the austenite grain growth in simulated HAZ. Owing to small austenite grain size in HAZ the width of coarse grain HAZ in high nitrogen TiN steel was decreased to 1/10 of conventional TiN steel. Even high heat input welding, the microstructure of coarse grain HAZ consisted of fine polygonal ferrite and pearlite and toughness of coarse grain HAZ was significantly improved.

  • To understand the effect of Fe on the oxidation behavior of TiAl alloys, TiAl-(2, 4, 6at% )Fe were oxidized at 800 and 90$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation resistance of TiAl-Fe alloys increased with increasing an iron content. The scales formed consisted of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, an intermediate $A1_2$$O_3$ layer, and an inner mixed ($TiO_2$+$A1_2$$O_3$) layer, being similar to other common TiAl alloys. But, the scales formed on TiAl-Fe alloys were generally thin compared to those formed on pure TiAl, and contained dissolved iron. Below the oxide scale, an oxygen affected zone was formed. This beneficial effects of Fe on increasing the oxidation resistance and scale adherence of TiAl alloys were attributed to the refinement of oxide grains, increased scale adherence and the enhanced alumina-forming tendency.

  • Microwave dielectric properties of $(Pb_{0.2}Ca_{0.8})[(Ca_{1/3}Nb{2/3})_{1-x}Ti_x]O_3$ ceramics were investigated as a function of $Ti^{4+}$ content (0.05$\leq$x$\leq$0.35). A single perovskite phase was obtained from x=0.05 to x=0.15, and $TiO_2$ and $CaNb_2O^6$ were detected as a secondary phase beyond x=0.2. The structure was changed from orthorhombic at x=0.05 to cubic at x=0.35. Dielectric constant(K) was increased with increase of $Ti^{4+}$ content due to increase of rattling effect, and was inversely proportional to the cube of the average radius of B-site cation, however, Qf value was decreased, which was due to the decrease of grain size and the secondary phase. With the increase of $Ti^{4+}$ content, the temperature coefficient of resonant frequency(TCF) was controlled from -27.36 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ value to +18.4 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ value, which was caused by the influence of tolerance factor(t) and the bond valence of B-site. Typically, K of 51.67, Qf of 7268(GHz), TCF of 0 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ were obtained in the $(Pb_{0.2}Ca_{0.8})[(Ca_{1/3}Nb_{2/3})_{0.8}Ti_0.2]O_3$ sintered at 13$50^{\circ}C$ for 3h.

  • The growth of solid particles in TiC-XC-2vo1.% and TiC-XC-30vo1.% Ni alloys, (where X=Zr, W or Mo) was fitted to the equation of the form $d^3$-${do}^3$=Kt during the liquid phase sintering at 1,673K. Also, the grain growth behavior decreased markedly with the addition of ${MO}_2$C or WC and increased with the addition of zrC. The contiguity was greater in the alloys with a smaller growth rate constant and especially, decreased by increasing the Ni content in the TiC-${MO}_2$C-Ni alloy. In addition, the effect of the addition of carbide on the grain growth of 2 vo1.% Ni alloys was found to be similar to that of 30vo1.% Ni alloys. Consequently, the grain growth mechanism cannot be explained by the usual solution / reprecipitation process, but can be explained in terms of a new growth velocity equation, which includes the effects of contiguous carbide grain boundaries in restricting the overall grain growth, as well as the area of the solid / liquid interface in the alloy.

  • Nanotube morphology change of Ti-Ta-Zr alloy as Zr content increase has been researched using various experimental methods. Ti-Ta-Zr(3, 7 and 15 wt%) alloys were prepared by arc melting and nano-structure controlled for 24 hr at $1000^{\circ}C$ in argon atmosphere. Formation of oxide nanotubes are conducted by anodizing a Ti-Ta-Zr alloy in $H_3PO_4$ electrolytes with small amounts of fluoride ions at room temperature. Electrochemical experiments were carried out with conventional three-electrode configuration with a platinum counter electrode and a saturated calomel reference electrode. The samples were embedded with epoxy resin, leaving a square surface area of $10mm^2$ exposed to the anodizing electrolyte, 1.0M $H_3PO_4$ containing 0.8wt% NaF.

  • In this study, an attempt was made to fabricate TiAl as well as its in situ composite via combustion synthesis. The processing variable of the combustion synthesis which include aluminum content and the heating rate were found to affect the combustion temperature. The combustion temperature measured, however, was lower than the melting temperature of TiAl and the reaction product were found to include incomplet reaction products. Carbon was added in order to increase the combustion temperature as well as to form in situ reinforcements. The reaction products showed homogeneous microstructures with carbide phases formed within indicating that the addition of carbon increased the combustion temperature above the melting temperature of TiAl.
