EFFECTS OF SURFACE ROUGHNESS AND MULTILAYER COATING ON THE CORROSION RESISTANCE OF Ti-6Al-4V ALLOY

  • The dental implant materials required good mechanical properties, such as fatigue strength, combined with a high resistance to corrosion. For increasing fatigue resistance and delaying onset of stress corrosion cracking, shot peening has been used for > 50 years to extend service life of metal components. However, there is no information on the electrochemical behavior of shot peened and hydroxyapatite(HA) coated Ti-6Al-4V alloys. To increase fatigue strength, good corrosion resistance, and biocompatibility, the electrochemical characteristics of Ti/TiN/HA coated and shot peened Ti-6Al-4V alloys by electron beam physical vapor deposition(EB-PVD) have been researched by various electrochemical method in 0.9%NaCl. Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared under the condition of hydrogen and vacuum arc furnace. The produced materials were quenched at 1000$^{\circ}C$ under high purity dried Ar atmosphere and were hold at 500$^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs to achieve the fatigue strength(1140㎫) of materials. Ti-6Al-4V alloys were prepared under the condition of hydrogen and vacuum arc furnace. Shot peening(SP) and sand blasting treatment was carried out for 1, 5, and 10min. On the surface of Ti-6Al-4V alloys using the steel balls of 0.5mm and alumina sand of 40$\mu\textrm{m}$ size. Ti/TiN/HA multilayer coatings were carried out by using electron-beam deposition method(EB-PVD) as shown Fig. 1. Bulk Ti, powder TiN and hydroxyapatite were used as the source of the deposition materials. Electrons were accelerated by high voltage of 4.2kV with 80 - 120mA on the deposition materials at 350$^{\circ}C$ in 2.0 X 10-6 torr vacuum. Ti/TiN/HA multilayer coated surfaces and layers were investigated by SEM and XRD. A saturated calomel electrode as a reference electrode, and high density carbon electrode as a counter electrode, were set according to ASTM GS-87. The potentials were controlled at a scan rate of 100 mV/min. by a potentiostat (EG&G Co.273A) connected to a computer system. Electrochemical tests were used to investigate the electrochemical characteristics of Ti/TiN/HA coated and shot peened materials in 0.9% NaCl solution at 36.5$^{\circ}C$. After each electrochemical measurement, the corrosion surface of each sample was investigated by SEM.

  • Generally, space structures are subjected to severe situations, such as, sublimation, strong evaporation of lubricants, thermal stresses, high temperature gradients, irradiation, impacts by microscopic meteorites, and other factors. Recent]y, various kinds of coatings are applied to the parts under heavy contact stresses, in order to insure long wear-free lives and/or reduce friction coefficients. In space structures, molybdenum disulfide is using frequently. Moreover TiN, Al$_2$O$_3$, PTFE(Poly Tetra Fluor Ethylene) are introduced recently for space structure. In this part we are going to apply the partial model method, developed in reference[11] to analyze part with coated layer. In referencer[l1], we compute the reasonable size of partial model and aspect ratio. Using these data, we analyze the structures coated with TiN, Al$_2$O$_3$, PTFE under contact load, temperature and crack model . Beside, we consider the stress analysis under time dependent load and transient thermal effect.

표면처리에 따른 Hastelloy X 합금의 고온물성 (High temperature properties of surface-modified Hastelloy X alloy)

  • 고온 열수송용 재료로 이용되는 Hastelloy X의 표면처리에 따른 고온물성 개선에 대한 연구를 수행하였다. Hastelloy X 기판 상에 각각 PVD법인 Arc discharge 및 Sputtering을 이용하여 TiAlN 및 $Al_2O_3$ 박막을 표면 코팅(overlay coating) 하였고, 분위기 분말을 이용하여 Al을 금속표면을 통해 확산시키는 방법인 Pack cementation법을 이용한 Al 확산코팅(diffusion coating: aluminiding)법을 이용한 표면처리를 수행하였다. 이들 표면처리가 Ni-Cr계 합금의 고온열처리에서 생성되는 두꺼운 불균질 산화물($Cr_2O_3$)형성 억제에 미치는 효과와 조성 및 표면미세구조가 물성에 미치는 영향에 대해 알아보기 위해, 표면처리 된 Hastelloy X 샘플들을 공기 및 헬륨가스 분위기에서 $1000^{\circ}C$로 열처리 하였으며, 열처리된 전후 시편들에 대해 상형성, 미세구조 및 고온 물성 변화를 측정하였다. 이러한 실험결과를 통하여 표면코팅법에 의한 TiAlN 및 $Al_2O_3$ 박막에 비해 Al 확산코팅한 경우 두꺼운 불균질 산화물($Cr_2O_3$)형성이 억제되어 보다 균질한 미세구조와 높은 내마모성 등 높은 고온 안정성을 보여주는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

Adhesive Behaviors of the Aluminum Alloy-Based CrN and TiN Coating Films for Ocean Plant

  • In the present study, TiN and CrN films were coated by arc ion plating equipment onto aluminum alloy substrate, A2024. The film thickness was about 4.65 ${\mu}m$. TiN and CrN films were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and energy dispersive X-ray equipments. The Young's modulus and the micro-Vickers hardness of aluminum substrate were modified by the ceramic film coatings. The difference in Young's modulus between substrate and coating film would affect on the wear resistance. The critical load, Lc, was 75.8 N for TiN and 85.5 N for CrN. It indicated from the observation of optical micrographs for TiN and CrN films that lots of cracks widely propagated toward the both sides of scratch track in the early stage of MODE I. TiN film began to delaminate completely at MODE II stage. The substrate was finally glittered at MODE III stage. For CrN film, a few crack can be observed at MODE I stage. The delamination of film was not still occurred at MODE II and then was happened at MODE III. This agrees with critical load measurement which the adhesive strength was greater for CrN film than for TiN film. Consequently, it was difficult for CrN to delaminate because the adhesive strength was excellent against Al substrate. The wear process, which the film adheres and the ball transfers, could be enhanced because of the increase in loading. The wear weight of ball was less for CrN than for TiN. This means that the wear damage of ball was greater for TiN than for CrN film. It is also obvious that it was difficult to delaminate because the CrN coating film has high toughness. The coefficient of friction was less for CrN coating film than for TiN film.

ARC를 위한 PECVD $SiO_xN_y$ 공정에서 $N_2O$ 처리 및 cap 산화막의 영향 (The Effect of $N_2O$ treatment and Cap Oxide in the PECVD $SiO_xN_y$ Process for Anti-reflective Coating)

  • As gate dimensions continue to shrink below $0.2{\mu}m$, improving CD (Critical Dimension) control has become a major challenge during CMOS process development. Anti-Reflective Coatings are widely used to overcome high substrate reflectivity at Deep UV wavelengths by canceling out these reflections. In this study, we have investigated Batchtype system for PECVO SiOxNy as Anti-Reflective Coatings. The Singletype system was baseline and Batchtype system was new process. The test structure of Singletype is SiON $250{\AA}$ + Cap Oxide $50{\AA}$ and Batchtype is SiON $250{\AA}$ + Cap Oxide $50{\AA}$ or N2O plasma treatment. Inorganic chemical vapor deposition SiOxNy layer has been qualified for bottom ARC on Poly+WSix layer, But, this test was practiced on the actual device structure of TiN/Al-Cu/TiN/Ti stacks. A former day, in Batchtype chamber thin oxide thickness control was difficult. In this test, Batchtype system is consist of six deposition station, and demanded 6th station plasma treatment kits for N2O treatment or Cap Oxide after SiON $250{\AA}$. Good reflectivity can be obtained by Cap Oxide rather than N2O plasma treatment and both system of PECVD SiOxNy ARC have good electrical properties.

중간층 증착에 의한 CrAlN 코팅의 기계적 물성 및 내열성 향상에 관한 연구 (Enhanced Mechanical Properties and Thermal Stability of CrAlN Coatings by Interlayer Deposition)

  • 물리기상증착방법 (Physical vapor deposition)에 의하여 합성된 천이금속 질화물 박막은 경도, 내마모성 등 절삭공구의 성능을 향상시키며, Ti-Al-N, Ti-Zr-N, Zr-Al-N, Cr-Si-N 등의 3원계 경질 박막에 대한 연구가 지속적으로 이루어지고 있다. 이중에서도 CrAlN 코팅은 높은 경도, 낮은 표면 조도 등의 우수한 기계적 특성 이외에 고온에서 안정한 합금상 형성으로 인하여 우수한 내열성을 보유하여 공구 코팅으로의 적용 가능성이 크다. 그러나 최근 공구사용 환경의 가혹화로 인하여 코팅의 내마모성 및 내열성 등의 물성 향상을 통한 공구의 수명 향상이 필요시 되고 있으며, 코팅에 적합한 중간층을 합성함으로써 공구 코팅으로의 적용 가능성을 높이는 연구들이 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 CrAlN 코팅의 물성을 향상시키기 위해 CrAlN 코팅과 WC-Co 6wt.% 모재 사이에 CrN, CrZrN, CrN/CrZrSiN 등의 다양한 중간층을 합성하였으며, 중간층을 포함한 모든 코팅의 두께는 $3{\mu}m$ 로 제어하였다. 합성된 코팅의 미세조직, 경도 및 탄성계수, 내모성을 분석하기 위해 field emission scanning electron microscopy(FE-SEM), nano-indentation, ball-on-disk 마모시험기 및 ${\alpha}-step$을 사용하였다. 코팅의 내열성을 확인하기 위해 코팅을 furnace에 넣어 공기중에서 500, 600, 700, 800, 900, $1,000^{\circ}C$로 30분 동안 annealing 한 후에 nano-indentation을 사용하여 경도를 측정하였다. CrAlN 코팅을 나노 인덴테이션으로 분석한 결과, 모든 코팅의 경도(35.5-36.2 GPa)와 탄성계수(424.3-429.2 GPa)는 중간층의 종류에 상관없이 비슷한 값을 보인 것으로 확인됐다. 그러나, 코팅의 마찰계수는 중간층의 종류에 따라 다른 값을 보였으며, CrN/CrZrSiN 중간층을 증착한 CrAlN 코팅의 마찰계수는 0.34로 CrZrN 중간층을 증착한 CrAlN 코팅의 마찰계수(0.41)에 비해 낮은 값을 보였다. 또한, 코팅의 마모율 및 마모폭도 비슷한 경향을 보인 것으로 보아, CrN/CrZrSiN 중간층을 합성한 CrAlN 코팅의 내마모성이 상대적으로 우수한 것으로 판단된다. 이것은 중간층의 H/E ratio가 코팅의 내마모성에 미치는 영향에 의한 결과로 사료된다. H/E ratio는 파단시의 최대 탄성 변형율로써, 모재/중간층/코팅의 H/E ratio 구배에 따라 코팅 내의 응력의 완화 정도가 변하게 된다. WC 모재 (H/E=0.040)와 CrAlN 코팅(H/E=0.089) 사이에서 CrN, CrZrSiN 중간층의 H/E ratio 는 각각 0.076, 0.083 으로 모재/중간층/코팅의 H/E ratio 구배가 점차 증가함을 확인 할 수 있었고, 일정 응력이 지속적으로 가해지면서 진행되는 마모시험중에 CrN과 CrZrSiN 중간층이 WC와 CrAlN 코팅 사이에서 코팅 내부의 응력구배를 완화시키는 역할을 함으로써 CrAlN 코팅의 내마모성이 향상된 것으로 판단된다. 모든 코팅을 열처리 후 경도 분석결과, CrN/CrZrSiN 중간층을 증착한 CrAlN 코팅은 $1,000^{\circ}C$까지 약 28GPa의 높은 경도를 유지한 것으로 확인 되었고, 이는 CrZrSiN 중간층 내에 존재하는 $SiN_x$ 비정질상의 우수한 내산화성에 의한 결과로 판단된다.

Hard TiN Coating by Magnetron-ICP P $I^3$D

  • A 30-kV plasma immersion ion implantation setup (P $I^3$) has been equipped with a self-developed 6'-magnetron to perform hard coatings with enhanced adhesion by P $I^3$D(P $I^3$ assisted deposition) process. Using ICP source with immersed Ti antenna and reactive magnetron sputtering of Ti target in $N_2$/Ar ambient gas mixture, the TiN films were prepared on Si substrates at different pulse bias and ion-to-atom arrival ratio ( $J_{i}$ $J_{Me}$ ). Prior to TiN film formation the nitrogen implantation was performed followed by deposition of Ti buffer layer under A $r^{+}$ irradiation. Films grown at $J_{i}$ $J_{Me}$ =0.003 and $V_{pulse}$=-20kV showed columnar grain morphology and (200) preferred orientation while those prepared at $J_{i}$ $J_{Me}$ =0.08 and $V_{pulse}$=-5 kV had dense and eqiaxed structure with (111) and (220) main peaks. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed some amount of $Ti_{x}$ $N_{y}$ in the films. The maximum microhardness of $H_{v}$ =35 GN/ $M^2$ was at the pulse bias of -5 kV. The P $I^3$D technique was applied to enhance wear properties of commercial tools of HSS (SKH51) and WC-Co alloy (P30). The specimens were 25-kV PII nitrogen implanted to the dose 4.10$^{17}$ c $m^{-2}$ and then coated with 4-$\mu\textrm{m}$ TiN film on $Ti_{x}$ $N_{y}$ buffer layer. Wear resistance was compared by measuring weight loss under sliding test (6-mm $Al_2$ $O_3$ counter ball, 500-gf applied load). After 30000 cycles at 500 rpm the untreated P30 specimen lost 3.10$^{-4}$ g, and HSS specimens lost 9.10$^{-4}$ g after 40000 cycles while quite zero losses were demonstrated by TiN coated specimens.s.

코팅공구의 제조에서 공정인자가 증착특성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Process Parameters on Deposition Characteristics in Fabrication of Coated Tools)

  • Thermal CVD method is in general used for the fabrication of TiC/$Al_2O_3$-coated carbide tools. The growth of TiC layer and the coating morphology depended on the chemical composition of the hard metal substrate on which the tool properties were strongly influenced. TiC-coated layer was grown by the diffusion of carbon from the substrate, whereas the growth of $Al_2O_3$ layer was unrelated to the composition of substrate. In the nitride hard coatings of Zr, Nb and Mo metals deposited on high speed steel substrate by magnetron sputtering, the reactivity of the metal elements was decreased with increasing group number in one period of the periodic system. The hard material films exhibited the highest adhesion with the chemical composition of stoichiometry or substoichiometry. The critical load as a measure of adhesion was evaluated using scratch tester. The CVD tools indicated the values of 80 and 40N in the coated layers with proper bonding to the substrate and with $\eta$ phase of 1$\mu\textrm{m}$ in the interface respectively, but the nitride films prepared by sputtering of PVD showed only the values between 10 and 20N.

마모특성 및 유한요소해석을 이용한 프레스금형 손상 간접예측 (Indirect Prediction of Surface Damage for a Press Die with Wear Characteristics and Finite Element Stamping Analysis)

  • The damage level of the die surface was predicted by estimating the surface roughness with a finite element analysis and the wear characteristics. Wear and friction tests were conducted to compare the wear characteristics for three kinds of surface treatments - CrN, TiAlN and AlCrN coatings. A prediction model was derived from the surface roughness results with respect to contact pressure and sliding speed which were obtained from the wear test. Surface roughness values for the damage regions of the die surface were compared between the experiments and the prediction model, which shows fairly good agreement with each other.
