A Study on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of A Ti-24Al-11Nb Alloy (Ti-24Al-11Nb 합금의 피로균열성장거동에 관한 연구)

  • The mechanisms of fatigue crack growth (FCG) in a Ti$_3$Al-based (${\alpha}_2$) alloy, Ti-24Al-11Nb (a/o) with acicular microstructure were studied with particular attention focused on the fatigue crack path through the microstructure and on the effects of specimen orientation and crack closure. The results showed that the fatigue cracks of Ti-24Al-11Nb alloy grew much faster than conventional titanium alloys, with little difference in FCG rates for TL and TS orientations. The fatigue crack paths revealed crystallographic transgranular fracture with frequent serrations and branching. This is in agreement with the known effects of slip planarity and microstructure on the FCG behavior. The load-displacement hysteresis loops showed that the crack closure influenced the FCG behavior.

  • The effect of hardening methods and process parameters on surface hardening of a Ti-6Al-4V Alloy has been investigated in this study. To characterize the effectiveness of the respective surface hardening methods, samples of a Ti-6Al-4V alloy were self-quenched, laser-nitrided, laser-carburized, laser-carbonitrided at the same laser irradiation conditions. This experimental procedure was followed by comparing the microstructural evolutions and mechanical properties of the respective samples after the laser surface hardenings. The hardening characteristics of the respective laser surface hardenings were well defined in this study, and the hardness was significantly influenced by the reaction compounds and laser energy density.

  • Refining of powder particles and their dissolution into the Al matrix during mechanical alloying(MA) were investigated by using X-ray diffraction(XRD) transmission electron microscopy (TEM) functions of alloy composition, milling time and ball to powder ratio(BPR). It is found that Ti particles less than 20nm are observed in a dark field image of mechanically alloyed Al-10wt%Ti whose XHD pattern exhibits no Ti peak. The observed change of lattice constant of AI indicates that about 1 wt%Ti can he solved in Al after MA for a long time, independent of alloy composition, milling time and BPR, suggesting that most of Ti particles arc retained in the Al matrix. It is concluded that the disappearance of XRD peaks in mechanically alloyed Al-10wt%Ti is not simply attributable to the dissolution of Ti into Al, but associated mainly with extreme refining and/or heavy straining of Ti Particles.

  • Precipitation behavior has been studied in NiTi-based ordered alloy using transmission electron microscopy. The hardness after solution treatment is high in NiTi alloy suggesting the large contribution of solid solution strengthening in this alloy system. However, the amount of age hardening is not large as compared to the large microstructural variations during aging. At the beginning of aging, the $L2_1-type$ $Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates keep a lattice coherency with the NiTi matrix. By longer periods of aging $Ni_2AlTi$ precipitates lose their coherency and change their morphology to the globular ones surrounded by misfit dislocations. Misfit dislocations, which are observed on {100} planes of H-precipitates have the Burgers vector of a <100> with a pure edge type. The lattice misfits of $NiTi-Ni_2AlTi$ system is estimated from the spacings of misfit dislocations to be 1.3% at 1273 K. The lattice misfits decrease with increasing aging temperature in this system.

  • $Ti_{52}Al_{48}$ and $(Ti_{52}Al_{48})_{100-x}B_x(x=0.5, 2, 5)$ alloys have been Produced by mechanical milling in an attritor mill using prealloyed powders. Microstructure of binary $Ti_{52}Al_{48}$ powders consists of grains of hexagonal phase whose structure is very close to $Ti_2Al$. $(Ti_{52}Al_{48})_{95}B_5$ powders contains TiB2 in addition to matrix grains of hexagonal phase. The grain sizes in the as-milled powders of both alloys are nanocrystalline. The mechanically alloyed powders were consolidated by vacuum hot pressing (VHP) at 100$0^{\circ}C$ for 2 hours, resulting in a material which is fully dense. Microstructure of consolidated binary alloy consists of $\gamma$-TiAl phase with dispersions of $Ti_2AlN$ and $A1_2O_3$ phases located along the grain boundaries. Binary alloy shows a significant coarsening in grain and dispersoid sizes. On the other hand, microstructure of B containing alloy consists of $\gamma$-TiAl grains with fine dispersions of $TiB_2$ within the grains and shows the minimal coarsening during annealing. The vacuum hot pressed billets were subjected to various heat treatments, and the mechanical properties were measured by compression testing at room temperature. Mechanically alloyed materials show much better combinations of strength and fracture strain compared with the ingot-cast TiAl, indicating the effectiveness of mechanical alloying in improving the mechanical properties.

  • Titanium alloys and Titanium alloy-based particulate composites were synthesized using the blended elemental P/M route. First, processing conditions such as the fabrication of master alloy powder were investigated. Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Fe, Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo, IMI685, IMI829, Timetal 1100 and Timetal 62S, and Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo/ 10%TiB and Timetal 62S/10%TiB were then synthesized using the optimal processing conditions obtained. The microstructures and mechanical properties such as tensile strength and high cycle fatigue strength were evaluated.

A study on microstruture and corrosion resistance of Ti-Nb alloys by hot rolling (열간압연에 의한 Ti-Nb계 합금의 미세조직 및 내식성에 대한 연구)

  • Pure titanium and Ti6Al4V alloy have been mainly used as implant materials but the cytotoxicity of V, neurotoxicity of Al resulting in Alzheimer disease had been reported. This paper was described the influence of composition of Ti-Nb alloys with 3 wt%Nb, 20 wt%Nb on the microstructure and corrosion resistance. Specimens of Ti alloys were melted in vacuum arc furnace and homogenized at $1000^{\circ}C$ for 24hr. The alloys were rolled in $\beta$ and ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ regions. The corrosion resistance of Ti alloys were evaluated by potentiodymic polarization test in 0.9% NaCl and 5% HCl solutions. The results can be summarized as follows: 1. The microstructure was transformed from $\alpha$ phase to ${\alpha}+{\beta}$ phase by adding Nb 2. The hardness of Ti-20Nb alloy was greater than Cp- Ti, Ti-3Nb alloy. 3. The corrosion resistance of Ti-20Nb alloy was better than that of Cp-Ti, Ti-3Nb alloy in 0.9%NaCl and 5%HCl solutions.

  • CrN film coated by AIP method, improved the mechanical properties (Hardness, Roughness, wear and fatigue) of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The properties were studied using GXRD, XPS, Hardness, Roughness, wear and fatigue testers. CrN thin film thickness was about 7.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ and grew with (111) orientation. Hardness of CrN thin film was very high (Hv 1390) and roughness of the surface layer was greatly improved (Ra=0.063$\mu\textrm{m}$) compared with matrix alloy (Ra=0.321$\mu\textrm{m}$). Such changes of hardness and roughness could be contributed to improving the wear resistance and fatigue life. Striation like pattern with dimples and voids, a typical fatigue fracture mode, was observed throughout the specimen.

  • A method for estimating the shear spinnability is suggested, and it was applied to sheets of Ti-6Al-4V alloy for estimation of shear spinnability at hot working temperature. The effective working temperature was $850^{\circ}C$ or above. The hot spinning operation was carried out in two steps of shear spinning. The reduction of thickness at the first step was 50% and 45% at the second, and the overall reduction of thickness was 72.4%. The cone spinning process could produce a uniform wall thickness with only a few percent tolerance, proving itself appropriate for making cones of Ti-6Al-4V alloy with uniform wall thickness.

  • Various heat-treatments were conducted to Ti-48.1at%Al and Ti-48.3at%Al-1.2at%Mn alloys casted by plasma arc melting system. Mechanical properties, microstructure and high temperature oxidizing behaviors of as-casted and heat-treatment alloys were investigated. Ti-48.1Al and Ti-48.3Al-1.2Mn alloys were decreased in strength according to increased of heattreatment temperature. Oxidizing weight gain of Ti-48.1Al alloy which conducted at $1273^{\circ}K$ was linearly increased. In case of adding Mn to alloy, there was no rapid increase of oxidizing weight gain during early time.
